Recently I took a 2018 Indian Chieftain Limited on a test ride and thought I would share my thoughts. This is my opinion on an Indian as a new motorcycle rider with around 5,000 miles of riding on my 2018 Harley-Davidson Heritage 114. After taking a Harley-Davidson Street Glide out for a test ride, I really wanted to compare it with the Indian Chieftain and do a Street Glide vs. Chieftain comparison.

You’re comparing the baseline Indian motor with the upgraded version of the Harley motor. Indian has a 116 that is much more torque-y and responsive.

I was comparing Indian Chieftain Dark Horse to the Street Glide Special which are directly competing "blacked out" bikes in their stock forms. The Chieftain Limited is the same power train that is in the Dark Horse.

Don't forget... 'ride modes' are on the new production. I don't know everything, but that is a known factor.

lol another faceless person who watches one video and just tosses something out there like “HD fanboy” to make themselves feel warm and fuzzy inside even though if they watched a couple more videos would learn rather quickly they couldn’t be more wrong. The beauty of these kinds of comments is how completely content people are being wrong. After many years of this, it’s quite comical. This HD fanboy is on record saying if I were in the market today, I would be buying an Indian Pursuit…… spoken like a true HD fanboy for sure.

Good review, it’s funny I made the same comparison with Johnny 5 and the layout of the fairing on indians message board. As for the torque comparison, I would try a 19 Chieftain, I hear the different ride modes really wake the bike up. Cool video man

Haha glad I’m not the only one seeing Johnny 5. I do hear the ride modes help a lot but I’ve also heard people say it really is only changing throttle sensitivity which isn’t really the same as getting torque at lower RPM. I definitely want to ride one to feel the difference tho.

Gears & Gadgets yeah that’s what it does I believe. From my understanding it doesn’t change the actual power output of the bike. I never rode one. I’m still very new to riding but I hope to eventually graduate to a bigger bike like the chieftain. I love the look of it, especially the matte finish. I have a bobber in matte black and my wife has a matte white scout.

ATL 2WHEELERS you might be right but for some reason Polaris doesn’t publicize the HP of the motor. I may be mistaken though, as I said earlier I’m relatively new to bikes. I’ve also heard from others that the different ride modes provide a distinct exhaust note. That’s really interesting to me. I can’t wait for the opportunity to ride one.

@@FNGMOTO you can always put it on a dyno. Most big bike manufacturers don't talk about it. They know most riders will upgrade intake and exhaust. Also, reviews are opinions. Like saying the Chieftain doesn't have enough torque is laughable! When you own a bike, opinions can change. If someone is talking about another bike brand more than the one they are test riding, they start to be biased and nit picky. I think if your title says you are test riding a certain bike, then your review should be about that bike only. in my opinion, as it stands right now, Indian has the better, all around, large sized V-Twins. You definitely get more for your money. That's my opinion though. 😉

No, I don’t know where your head is when you tell me you’re 6’1”. People come in different proportions: some have long torsos, others are leggy. (Ditto flat-footing the bike: your height doesn’t tell me how long or short your legs are. Inseam length would be useful information for that, but motovloggers are forever reporting their height.)

You actually know exactly where my head is when I tell you I am 6’1”. My head is always at the top of my body. Now that I got the wise ass part of my answer out of the way, my Inseam is 32 inches.

I never understood why Apple car play is even mentioned as an important issue. But I guess newer riders as yourself it could be a selling point. I would rather have air pressure info but even that's not a selling point. I guess I'm old but any music is ok but newbies must have their own tunes .

Edward Lorentz I think it’s just at the price point that these bikes are at, with having a screen like they do, they should be providing tire pressure, engine, temps, mpg, and whatever other info is available. My DynoJet PowerVision reads a TON of data that my 2018 Heritage is recording so if the data is available, show it to me. And as for CarPlay, it’s 2019 and onboard GPS days are dying out. Using CarPlay / android auto for GPS, music control, and alerts only makes sense. Again, the price points are what make me feel it’s really just something that should be there. Also would help get younger people interested in bigger motorcycles. Young peeps want tech.

The fancy Street Glide has a curved lip, the standard Street Glide doesn't, that may play into it, you can get a screen with a curved lip for the Chieftain too. For me the winner is the one with the most ride comfort, in my defense Indian wasn't out when I bought my Harley but I've ridden the new Harley and the new Indian and the Indian wins hands down.

The stock windshield is the bare minimum for buffeting, an upgrade is a must.

I’ve seen people who have had taller/shorter windshields. Not positive if it’s a factory option or aftermarket but I wanna say it’s a factory option.

It does but the Indian gear indicator works with the clutch pulled in, you can drop gears on a single clutch pull and see which gear your in the whole time. Harley gear indicator goes away when you pull the clutch in. I didn’t think I would care until I rode the Indian. It is a nice touch.

@@GearsGadgets I guess I dont see the need to know the gear with the clutch pulled in (since im used to it, having owned 2 - 14+ bikes). Yet i get why it might be handy at say a stop light, and you dont realize your in second, but I usually decel my way to a stop. On my 2013 Ultra I missed the gear indicator from the rushmore bikes, since it would only inform you of being in N or 6th gear lol

I have both Harley and Indian. I love the movable windshield, the gear selector, and the lockable bags on the Indian. By Indian rides so much better too. Love my Harley too. But the Indian wins overall.

I was trying to compare them stock to stock to stock 114 vs 111. If you start comparing options you start pushing these bikes up to 30K custom bikes which becomes a lot harder to compare apples to apples
