In this video I show you how I installed a great 2 outlet USB power socket into my 2018 Kawasaki Z1000SX. The device also has a cool volt meter display in the centre of it too.
Its pretty easy to do and way cheaper then the factory option which is £84.95 in the UK - plus dealer time to fit!!
I bought a great USB socket from Amazon, the link is below, and with only basic tools I completed the job in about 30 minutes... even while filming it for this video!
its so easy, and immensely satisfying to do....
This is also the first video where I actually speak to the camera! I've used a neat clip on microphone that connects to my GoPro via an adapter, the sound was pretty good I think. I will get better at this sort of thing so go easy on me for my first time ;)
Anyway - I hope this is a useful video to someone out there, and if you have any questions, give me a shout :)

Thanks for the cracking video, I have just bought a new Ninja to replace my ‘17 model, which had a dealer fitted (hardly ever used) power socket. I bought the same green USB socket 5 mins after watching your video and will fit it when the bike comes.

Really enjoyed this video. You've given me the courage to wire my phone holder to the loom for the headlights on my ZZR1200! Just need to get some electrical connectors!

Awesome. Don’t forget to keep the inline fuse. Oh and make sure you buy a big box of connectors :) in a nice set :) Seriously, I’d probably run to the battery as I’m not sure the headlight circuit is ideal. Some folk also put an inline switch in to make sure the socket doesn’t drain the battery. I’m sure there’ll be a switched live circuit available somewhere on that bike as there’s loads of optional items that can be fitted. Well worth some research.

I'm glad you posted this video bc I'm tackling this small project tomorrow. And my USB connector is identical to yours (out of the box) and I'll be cutting off the fuses, adding the male and female ends and plug and play and installing the relay kit. I had a question leading up to this. I wasn't sure if I needed the fuses or not and I THOUGHT not, bc I wasn't going straight to the battery! Thanks for the help!

You are correct, I took a look today and there are no bullet connections. I couldn't even find a connection. I found a write up for a 2020 ninja and apparently the new waterproof plugs they use are wrapped in tape under a connector. I'm going to take another look tomorrow and if I find them, will make a video showing the way I connect it up. Thanks!

Great episode from your channel. I have seen similar from Johnathon Long over in the states but his installation was quite clinical but yours was much better. Have you done he heated grips yet, which power feed would they go to? Manufacturers say wire direct to battery, I'm expecting a dead battery in that case. Keep up the good work.
@chisnsid
@chisnsid 5 лет назад
thanks for such a nice comment - I really appreciate it. I have not fitted any heated grips and I don't think I will, but I understand there is power available in the loom already, I think it's behind the main fairing panel on the left hand side of the bike but would need to be checked. The bit that's useful about the existing factory wiring is that it is switched by the ignition, so you won't be Able to leave the grips on... I will take a look and see what I can find..

Hi just come across your video from the link you posted on the new ninja 1000sx, great video by the way👍 is the socket waterproof when it’s in use?
@chisnsid
@chisnsid 4 года назад
hi, thank for the feedback :) glad you like the video :) the rubber cover waterproof's the socket when not in use, when you have a cable plugged in you have to remove the cover so I'd say no it's not. But to be honest, getting water in it would be pretty unlucky... unless you are stationary in a down pour. regards ZedRunner

Great video! How did you fit the Quadlock to the sat nav mount?
@chisnsid
@chisnsid 4 года назад
Two strong cable ties. I used the handle bar mount version of the quad lock. It used to work perfectly. Just decided to upgrade the navigation to a ‘proper’ Garmin. Got fed up with the limited app capabilities. The quad lock itself worked perfectly.

@chisnsid
@chisnsid 4 месяца назад
Hi. Anything you can power from the available grunt from the usb outlet would be ok. If your satnav can run off usb the it should be fine :) I’d suggest checking the power requirements of the device in question.

Good video - really appreciated. One thing - had you used a STUBBY screwdriver to begin with, you wouldn't have had to remove any fairings, which means that you could get to your next cup of tea much faster. Liked and subbed. Kawasaki Kid

@@chisnsid The size Philips needed is a #1, and better than using a stubby straight screwdriver, a ratchet offset makes it really easy to access the screw w/o removing any fairing. LOVE my 2018 Ninja 400 KRT Edition ABS, BTW.

Hi. If you have the 2018 model like mine there are two connectors specifically for the usb accessory outlet. Those are where you connect the two wires to. You can only just see in the video (apologies but it’s hard to film it) but there are two connections I linked into.

I have the exact same USB kit, but apparently my 2018 Versys, which visibly has the exact same dash, requires an additional relay to be installed. Do you not need that on the Ninja?
@chisnsid
@chisnsid 3 года назад
Nope the ninja has switched live and a neutral wire already in the loom ready. The fusing and relay are already there. They might be part of a larger circuit but definitely there.

@@chisnsid I think they are color coded, and you used red ones. The colors indicate what gauge wire they can handle, so if the red worked, you want red ones.

Can I connect my satnav into the same connectors along with the USB port
@chisnsid
@chisnsid 4 года назад
hi, if you mean wiring both the power and usb into the same bullet connectors inside the bike, I'd prefer not to do that. I'm sure someone will say you can, but I don't see the point, keep each item individually fused and there's no worries. bear in mind the usb connectors are designed for that... id you add usb AND sat nav power requirements, what will happen to the fuse in the bike? I don't know the answer to that so I'd stick with the safer option and do one item as per design intent. cheers ZedRunner

Hi the wiring loom on the 2020 model may well be different. Has to be something to connect to as they still sell the usb outlet as an official accessory. I can have a rummage to see if I can find out any info.

Looks like kawasaki have changed the two bullet connections to a proprietary company plug. It’s there and the wire colours seem to correspond to the older bikes.
