2018 Kawasaki Z900RS Review - This is a bike I'd ben itching to ride ever since I first set my eyes on it in the flesh at the NEC show last November. Not only is the Kawasaki Z900RS a beautiful looking retro styled machne but it also has one of those creamy 4 cylinder engines that I like from my personal bike collection! I was really looking forward to riding this classically styled Z1 aping machine, but did it live up to expectations?

The original is my favourite bike ever and the new version (with the candy paint scheme only) is easily my favourite today. The transformer look of most current bikes does nothing for me😎
@scotteger6271

I do like the candy paint scheme but there's just something about this black with subtle stripes that really appeals to me. This bike reminds me of the bikes they rode on the original Mad Max!
@Ritalie

When I saw this bike, it was a breath of fresh air. The modern "transformer look" motorcycles are about as beautiful as dog vomit. I feel like the motorcycle companies don't actually have any Humans working for them. Litearlly. I think aliens are designing these new POS SPACECRAFT looking motorcycles that have zero symmetry or beauty to them. My 2002 ZX-6R Ninja was the most beautiful sportbike ever produced, other than the Ducati 916 and 999, early R6 and R1 Yamaha's, and the early TL1000.
@entropede

I did a test ride with this bike yesterday and completely fell in love with it. The retro look is really deceptive: it rides and handles like a top modern streetfighter and eats up curves like nothing. I was especially impressed with the suspension and the front brakes, very confidence-inspiring. I agree with TMF about the mirrors, they offer the best view of any mirrors I've seen because they are slightly convex, meaning that you get a bit of a fish-eye view which is great. Only issue is that they are quite far out over the handlebars which makes splitting lanes a bit trickier, something to keep in mind.

36 here and i really dislike most modern bikes design wise, its like they cannot find a standpoint and just looks futuristic in a weird way, quickly loosing their "modern" look. This is a bike that looks like a bike and not some weird transformer jet ski, great classic looks, modern components, quality finish and it actually has pillion seat that can be used for a pillion.

The builders in Japan have perfected this beauty and I thank God some new riders will learn to enjoy sitting up like a king on their new retro. Look forward to the 2019 version. The single pipe is for engine tuning purposes, they're actually 2 pipes in there. Racers call it 4 into 2.

I’ve never really been much of a Kwaka fan, but that looks really nice. Neighbour across the road had an original Z1 back in the seventies and it was *the* super bike of the day. Strange how we now think of a 900cc bike as ‘small’ these days. Another great bike review TMF. 👍😎

Just looked at this again, some time after it was published. You mentioned the original four exhausts, but a popular mod of the day was to put a lighter four into one pipe one ASAP. I think it needs a tail tidy, and it's all sorted. Wonderful.

Thanks for the review, TMF. That is a simply fantastic looking bike and the ride quality seems just about perfect. I saw one at the dealer this week, and I was amazed at how small Kawasaki managed to make the inline 4. Seemed smaller than Triumphs modern triples, in fact. I want that bike, too. I found the black one to be nicer in the flesh than the candy one. And you're absolutely right. Kawasaki is going to sell a lot of these.

Hello MrF. I’m quite jealous seeing you on this. The original Z1 was gorgeous and so much better than anything Norton or Triumph (or BMW) were selling. Yep the Triumph comment made me giggle too , I just traded my 2015 T-Bird after numerous issues , (fork seals leaking at 1400km , TPS flat spot , tank stripe not central) . Yes they fixed the seals but the throttle was never perfect , and paint I'm still waiting to hear back , Never mind, I'll never by a Hinckley Triumph (or should I say Thailand) again and I'm loving my new Z900RS , it's a magic bike that's quick , stops , handles and looks cool 👍 I'll always have my T150v when I want the feel of pride to ride a real British Triumph , cheers

Pete Wielsma Tank stripe not central?!!!
@petewielsma423
@petewielsma423 6 лет назад
Matt cc Gday Matt , yes the stripe down the centre of my T-bird as was off centre 3mm to the right (gave appearance of 6mm in total )I always thought it looked odd but when I changed the seat it showed up very badly against the stitching on new seat . You could also see the stripe wasn't central to the tank mount when I had seat off (5 month old bike and dealer didn't want to know about it) Triumph now tell me it's not a warranty issue (took 7 weeks for that reply) very poor quality and after sales support from Triumph, they've lost a loyal fan who lived and breathed Triumph , even noticed the number plate light lense fell out after about a year . I'm just pleased all my memorabilia on my garage wall is the old Meridan logo as they were the real bikes built with pride . The new ones may as well be a Chinglonsing or something with a Triumph badge on it , sorry to be so negative against Triumph but that's the experience I've had with my 1st brand new bike I've owned , cheers

When I was a kid in the mid '80s, I used to glare at je '70s Kawasaki models and was drooling and wishing one day I'd own one. This to me is absolutely beautiful, I love every single thing about it. It's just that I'm 6'2" and I fear it would be little cramped for me. Even my Versys 650 is starting to bug me because of the leg room on long rides (bad knees thanks to years of basketball). Still, I would like to try this one, I absolutely love this! Nice review as always Mr. Flyer, cheers!

45yr old here, never took the opportunity to get a motorcycle even though I've ridden a lot of 50cc's back in my teens. My best friend just bought a Z900RS, we went to the shop together, and I just couldn't contain myself and ordered one for myself too. Kinda stilly, since I don't even have a license for it (planned to get one on may 27th). So beginning of june, a boyhood dream will come true and I'll have my proper motorcycle after a VERY long wait (kids, job, wife etc always had a reason to postpone). But not this time, in fact, when I sat on it in the shop, my wife almost "made" me buy it. "Come on hon, you've been dreaming about owning a bike for SO long now, just go with it". Gotta love her :) So now it's counting down for the days the driving lessons start (we are obliged to take between 9 and 12 hours of lessons before exams here in Belgium); and then hopefully pass without any issue so I can pick up my baby.

Kawasaki has just showed the new SE model for next year I think! Seamed to address the only minor problems with the old one, first Brembo brakes and and a fully adjustable Öhlins rear shock, also they have made adjustments to the front forks to go with the updated rear ones. The pictures show it with the usual gold colored Öhlins, wished they were in black though, maybe Kawasaki could do a blacked out RS as seams to be popular with other brands.

I'm looking to buy a new bike fo myself. I fell in love in those retro bikes, and I narrowed my choice to Z900RS and T120. If I'm looking rationally I get so much more from Z900RS. Better suspension, more power, dealrship is so much closer (and cheaper parts), alloy wheels, 2000€ cheaper (in my country), Japanasse reliability,... But... T120 is such a looker and bike with so much charm, I just love the whole style of it. Hard decisions. :D

From all the big 4 japanese brands, Kawasaki nailed in the design department , its a fantastic blend of modern and yet very retro of the 70’s, my only complaint is the damn seat height. 31 inch inseam i would be on the balls of my feet but with 200kg i would be more happy flat footed with some bend on my legs. I am hoping Honda will wake up and make there cb650f similar to this but i have my doubts, instead they made this rubbish look neo cafe race, even the name sounds horrid.

The Kawa is so light the seat height (for me at least) wasn't an issue....

You can get a low seat for it I think it lowers the seat height to 815mm www.kawasaki.co.uk/en/accessories/seats___backrests/Z900_RS/2018?UidCat=01FFWUYNBkU9Iw&UidSubCat=05FBWlhZXFhaWllYWFlQWVBQXFtaUVhdRg0GRT0j&CodeBaseInternal=0188MjpRWFgr&Uid_Model=0771WlxdWV9eXllZWApZXFEJWgpQWA5RW1xRWFFeWwtfXlo&Uid=08B3WglbC19ZWFlaDFhbXFAJXFAKCwpRC1lQDAsOXAxQWlw

I am 68 and have developed a physical condition that makes it impossible for me to ever ride again. I was in Pearl Harbor HI in 1973 and owned a BSA 650 Lightning that was "fast." A neighbor in Navy housing had the Z1 and let me ride it in the plan. I didn't even shift to 2nd gear but went faster than the Beezer in all 4 gears. Made the Honda 750s look like bricks.

Triumph do a better job of hiding the radiators on their twins, but that's easier with only 2 pipes coming out of the engine. Do you want 2, 3 or 4 cylinders? I plumped for 2 :)

My first bike was a 76 KZ 650 sr. Love that bike. Probably still running today. Then I bought a 90 750 Ninja. I have a 2001 Triumph Sprint ST now. But I really like that bike. Kawi really got it right with that one.

if theres one thing i absolutely HATE about this bike : DETUNED Z900 ENGINE. Seriously Kawasaki, stop making us choose between beauty and performance, just give us all the power.
@RebelRides
@RebelRides 6 лет назад
Although it's 'detuned' it is arguably better suited for roll-on overtaking power where you really need it due to it's more linear midrange. Though I suppose that depends on your riding style.
@MissMan666
@MissMan666 6 лет назад
I agree, they didnt have to touch the Z900 engine at all, waste of time and money, its was perfectly fine with plenty of low down grunt already. But its not that bad, this engine actually has a much wider torque band than Z900, more low down and mid range power. At least there is a few things that is actually an upgrade handling wise on the RS vs Z900, the RS has better brakes, better suspension with better adjustability and it has traction controll, the overall finish is also better than Z900.
@spoonman73

Totally agree. I have the Z1000sx and find myself wishing It was a supersport all the time. Though, I love everything else about it and don't plan on selling it. Personally, I wish all the naked bikes were just as fast as their superbike cousins.

There is hope, though. I believe Brocks performance has acquired a Z900RS for testing to improve the performance.

Should have bought a GSXS1000, it lays down 145rwhp stock. Starts making good power at 4k, has very strong mid and a serious top end that the Kwak nakeds can't match. Not quite as strong as a GSXR1000, but it is plenty of motor for a street bike. It also handles great, feels light, its very comfy and has Brembo front monoblock calipers. I love Kawi's ZX14R, but their naked bikes couldn't hold a candle to the GSX when i was shopping. Suzooks cheaper too :)

Love the video ending as well :-) My only gripe looking at your ride and Kawasaki are not alone in this as Triumph and Ducati do this as well is the nasty and cheap looking little tupperware sample pot on the handle bars. I don't get why we just accept this as OK spending serious Dosh on bikes! Having said that it wouldn't be a deal breaker though just an annoyance for me

I was lucky enough to own a 'Brand New' 1979 Kawasaki Z1000 MKII at the youthful age of 18 and my oh my what an amazing bike she was. All these years on and I now own a Versys 1000 Adventure Bike which also has a silky smooth powerplant combined with loads of rider comfort. I can't help but feel if like you TMF I had a spare 10k kicking around I'd have one of these bad boys in addition for those self indulgent rides that such bikes do so well. I do love the retro styling coupled with the modern engineering.... Great review BTW

Jan - a few months on and I find myself in the same position. What did you do in the end, and do you have a clear view of which you prefer between the Z900RS and the T120?
@pilotpilot81
@pilotpilot81 5 лет назад
I ended up getting the T120 black in matte grey (I pick it up on Tuesday 😍), I found the Vulcan S underpowered (and it gave me backpain), but the Z900RS looked the part! The Kawa is gorgeous, but I can’t live with the high-rev nervousness and the very on/off throttle. I prefer torque over power it turns out.
@karlosh2422
@karlosh2422 5 лет назад
@@pilotpilot81 bigger capacity (or supercharging) will always give more torque from low revs. The headline max power is always at the top of the rev range, so is often not a good indicator on how a bike gets to road legal speeds. Nice big flat torque bands from low down are much more useful. Of course if you want to be the next Rossi, Marquez or Hickman max power at lots of revs is important!

@RebelRides 6 лет назад
Having ridden a '74 Z1 I was surprised at the lack of power and rather vague cornering. Perhaps I shouldn't have been so shocked but I had just had a pep-talk about how it will rip my arms off and make me laugh like an idiot. I couldn't wait to return it! Lol. The original looks beautiful but I think rose-tinted glasses often play a big part in folks nostalgia. I could definitely go for a modern one though :)
@BikeMates

Dazzle Яebel Rides In its day the Z1 was considered very powerful but don't forget a 650 Triumph was considered powerful back then. As for the handling it was well known to be very poor ie great in a staight line but rubbish in the twisty roads.

Really like these. On a rare visit to my office....which is opposite Kawasaki uk in Bourne end, saw one parked outside and did have a walk around! Covered in road dirt, it still looked rather nice! The only criticism I’ve heard is from old school bikers who mention the lack of 4 exhausts. I’ll take it for what it is...and like it. A 4 cylinder retro is pretty nice in my view.....like the older 4 cylinder muscle bikes....but far lighter. Nice one TMF!
