make sure to hit the bell notification to get notified of new videos. also, Guido really doesn't post very actively on this channel anymore. he is super busy with work and posting videos in German, therefore his english channel has been prioritized less. Regardless, it's always awesome to see a new vid pop up here
Agreed; wish there were more vids like his - objective, balanced and honest (and well edited). Unlike so much of the obsequious, sycophantic stuff out there which doesn't offer the slightest criticism of any cars they review (yes you, Shmee, Seen Through Glass, Mr JWW etc. etc. ... ).
Thank you guys! Im limited to do these videos during vacation, but given that my daily job is all around the same subject, I hope you check out AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS and my Instagram for the latest news :) Cheers, Guido
What an honest review. So many reviewers have sat on the fence when reviewing cars Because they work for a car selling web site and don't want to damage potential sales. Well done Guido.
Glad you’re here again, Guido! Thx for the great vid, good that you crack down on the engine. When it does not meet the standard that we are used to with Porsche, tell it like it is.
@@TheGetawayer Good to see you back Guido. Your review matches my sentiments. I test drove the 718 around town and highway but couldn't wait to return the keys as I found the driving experience underwhelming. Bought a low mileage 981 Cayman S PDK, remapped the ecu to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec. Hair-trigger throttle response, pulling strongly from 3000rpm to redline with that legendary flat 6 NA engine wail.... all with stock air filters and exhaust manifolds. I laugh during and after every drive, it's so enthralling, which is the reason I bought a Porsche sports car. The 718 is not one of Porsche's better efforts.
As so many have already said, Great to see you here again, Guido. I look forward to driving the new 4 cylinder turbo configuration. I have the Cayman 987.2 flat 6 with the PDK (previously had the Boxster manual) and I've had a blast with it since the day I bought it. I am especially surprised to hear that the PDK was searching around for the right gear on occasion. And who am I to believe if not The Getawayer, and I mean that in all sincerity. You're the Porsche guy I've listened to for a long time and I hope this is a sign of things to come. Welcome back! You were sorely missed.

Enjoyable and no bs review as always! I agree with your points. I had a 987.1 Cayman S and while not nearly as fast as the new ones, it was incredibly engaging and visceral to drive.
Agreed. Actual speed isn’t that important, especially on public roads. It is why “under-powered” cars are often more fun to drive - you can actually work the machine and more thoroughly exploit its potential.
How can we keep on comparing 6-flat to new 4-flat engines? Just look at the positive movement to a smaller footprint (yeah it hurts me too) but then for me personally the new 4-flat boxer is absolutely TOP level engineering and design from Porsche. Great performance and - surprisingly - great and adorable sound. Note: You are the first one that is negative about the PDK. Interesting aldo.

One of the best car reviewers on RU-vid! Congrats, sir! I would love to see you reviewing cars that are getting old, but are great to drive and maybe some of them will become clasics, like the Cayman 987.1/.2, 996, M3 E46.
Great review as always Guido. Agreed on all fronts. I drove a 718 Boxster S recently and I'm so glad that I have the 981 generation. The engine would be great in a hot hatch but not in such a sports car.
Good to see another review from you Guido. It ashamed, the Cayman now sounds like a Subaru. I love Porches, but wonder where they will end up in this new small displacement turbo era. The sound the GT3 makes is what a Porsche should sound, and rev like! See you next time.
Guido, welcome back my friend...you have been greatly missed. In view of Matt Farrah's departure from the car review scene, your timing is impeccable. Let's hope this is the start of a new beginning...

Just like everything in life, the sound is relative to what you have experienced before or comparing to. I test drove the base Cayman and thought the sound was great. At least not a deal breaker. Too many purists are hating on it for what it is not rather than praising it for what it is. For me it's still one of if not the best entry level sports car. And who can argue with a 4 second 0-100kph car? That would be fun with ear plugs in! If you are new to Porsche or sports cars, test drive it and decide for yourself. I know what a screeming 6 sounds like...amazing... But the new Cayman is still a fantastic car for what it is. Don't be put off by all the haters.
As you stated yourself: It depends on what you have experienced. And if you had driven a 981 GTS or GT4 you would not call me a hater. Not that I let anybody call me that anyway, unless you are new to my channel
Excellent and honest review! I love my manual 2007 Cayman S and wish they'd improve the engine, not make it worse. Such a shame since as you said the Cayman chassis is so good. Hope you get a chance to review the GT3 manual. Would love to hear your thoughts on that car.
Nice to have you back after almost a year, your also right about the 718. This is what happen to great cars when Green laws take over. Yea is still quick, but the experience sucks.
The Getawayer, welcome back !! 👍👍. Great video, assume along with the Porsche GT cars the Turbo S engine still delivers? Be good if you test drove the Turbo S.
Ive driven a few new Turbos in the past two years. Even did a comparion test with a 911 Turbo and Nissan GT-R track pack. You are right, the 3.8 is much more enjoyable. Lets see how the next 911 Turbo will be ;) Cheers, Guido
Hi Guido welcome back. Really enjoy your reviews just wish there were more of them. Can you please get your hands on a 991.2 manual gt3 and do a review of that. There are very few reviews of the manual out there as the PDK came out first and the manual got forgotten.
I reviewed the new GT3 with manual for AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS and added subtitles. Really like it. Also drove the Touring, but prefer a winged GT3. Cheers, Guido
What are your thoughts on a manual transmission 718? Does that help to give back some of the driver/car connection and maybe also add more ability to exploit the powerband and lift throttle hiss sounds from the turbo? I had a GT4 and liked the engine sound , but I now have a 991.2 GT3 with a center exhaust bypass and I am love with this engine and its sound.
I always prefer a manual and Im sure it would help the experience in the 718, but its still not my kind of engine. 991.2 GT3 is an epic car. I filmed one for AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS and its a subtitled video, be sure to check it out if you like ;) Cheers, Guido

You are the ultimate authority on P cars imho. I agree the GT cars are the only new P cars that get me excited to drive. The turbo charged engines are not fun unless you are going at highly illegal speeds where as the NA cars can be enjoyed through out the rev range due to the build up of torque and the satisfying musical pitch change of the exhaust..
Welcome back Guido. I do however totally disagree with your view on the 718. Its an epic car, better that the 981 (not sound I agree) but in every other way its better. I've never owned a naturally aspirated Porsche so this might be why but my new 718 Cayman GTS is brilliant, I like the sound but its not NA but I really don't care. Its so rewarding for me to drive. Everyone is entitled to their view and I respect your but I just don't agree. Keep up the great vids.
Thanks for the feedback! Its always interesting for me to get your guys opinion to see where Im standing. Have to say I liked the GTS 718 more too, but I think you should really try 981 to see where Im coming from. Would love to read another comment from you after that drive! Cheers, Guido
Radu Aleman Hi Radu, I am very pleased with the GT4. I don’t find that there is a lack of power.... If anything it is more usable than more powerful cars on the roads, I live in the U.K. Mine has the lightweight bucket seats which I find to be excellent., but I would suggest that you try them before buying. I don’t use the GT4 as a daily driver..... The 981 Spyder does looks superb..... Hope this is helpful information. Kind regards.
Radu Aleman Everything over 300hp has enough power- you cant drive sport cars on the limit on tracks as youre not a racing driver. Better to ride a slow car fast than a fast car slow
I was waiting for Guido's input on this particular case. The Cayman 2018 is being slammed everywhere else, mostly american magazines but we know they are prone to do this because of their muscle cars and everything. This is the approach I was looking for, the German sense of criticism, objective and direct. Thanks Guido, great videos. Keep them coming

Great to see you back , what new car do you recommend around the 12000 Euro mark ? I live in Austria and my punto is a complete rust bucket. I have until end of may to formulate a decision. Your input is much appreciated.
I drive many normal cars tested by our sister magazine AUTO TEST and personally I was most impressed by the latest KIA and Hyundai products, believe it or not. They drive well and offer alot of standard equipment and great value for money..I dont know what exactly you are looking for, used or new, daily or sporty, as far as small cars go the VW Up! and Polo are also very nice...Be abit more specifc and I will try to give you a better response:) Cheers, Guido
Excellent points in your review. I test drove the 718 S, although it's faster I did not get the same excitement compared to my 2015 981 Cayman S. It looks like the 718 GT4 will carry a detuned GT3 V6. This will certainly be good news however availability will be scarce because of high demand and prize. I certainly will not be able to afford it immediately. :)
Guido thank you for the best car reviews on the planet I bought a Porsche 911 991.1 N/A Manual and cannot be happier. I am really looking forward to your review of the 992? Are you doing one soon? I don't trust anyone else other than you when it comes to 911s
@@TheGetawayer hey Guido yeah I test drove the 992.1 Carrera s just before lockdown and I must admit I prefer my n/a 991.1 manual Carrera S I look forward to testing the new GT3 when it's out but it's hard for me to let go of my 991.1 I am thinking of improving shocks and exhaust to improve it slow slightly but I can't justify the new 992. Your thoughts? I agree with your assessment 100%
I was able to drive this exact same configuration on an autocross circuit at LimeRock race park in connecticut. I experienced the exact same issue with the pdk. It was especially bad when getting on the gas coming out of a hard corner. The combination or the turbo 4 spooling up + the transmission hunting caused a very jerky response. On the other hand, the 981 we drove at the same event was extremely linear and predictable
Here's a question for you, Guido: do you think a hybrid powertrain, specifically torque filling that turbo lag, would improve the car, or would the added weight and complexity ruin the knife's edge balance? I appreciate what electrification offers in terms of performance and efficiency, but the hit to driving dynamics from batteries is still a lot to take. Just kind of wondering how the Mission E technology might spread across the lineup.
Great to see you again Guido, I think RU-vid automatically 'unsubscribed' my account from your channel :/ I know you aren't liking these turbocharged engines in 718 Cayman/Boxster +911 carreras but I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on the Carrera T. Using the base Carrera's 370hp engine, its probably the closest 'naturally-aspirated feeling' engine in the carrera range. With less sound insulation, tighter gear ratios and shorter gear lever, i'm curious to know your overall impressions on the Carrera T (if you can find a generous owner/porsche dealer!). Thank you for putting the english subtitles for your 991.2 GT3 video on the AutoBild channel!
As an owner of a 987, the only thing that excites me about the new 718 is the design of the rear tail lights, and the PDK transmission. Period. I really wish with all my heart Porsche offers a 6 cylinder variant in the future for the Cayman.
I remapped the ecu of my 981 Cayman S to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec. Hair-trigger throttle response pulling like the clappers from 3000rpm to redline. With the legendary flat 6 NA engine note. Ultimate sports car driving experience for the money.
Excellent video. That engine note has no redeeming qualities, apart from sounding better than an EV, but you can't argue with the power and performance.
I'm subbing you Shiite dude from sprockets. Sorry for the bad joke. A perfect assessment of a car that was, and might be, the great Porsche as it should be. A complete all encompassing car that combines the best of gt driving with the "I've made a mess in my pants " sports car experience. They have taken away a considerable amount of sensuality away from the look as well. This seems to be endemic throughout the industry however...what say you to that? All badges are taking the beauty and edge off of their entry level offerings it seems. To what end? To make the more profitable upper echelon offerings seem more aesthetically pleasing? Leave some scraps for the entry level enthusiast who lives to drive!!!
I *bought a 718S* with all performance options. And *ended up changing to a 981* Cayman GTS. The 718 is faster pick up for sure, but it's just not inviting. It doesn't motivate me or provide me a reason to enjoy it. The sound in 981 GTS is phenomenal, as good as the GT3 (then again I'm comparing it to a 3.8 GT3, NOT the 4.0 GT3) . Super in your face, very nice and loud cabin noise (I feel louder than the GT4, maybe for easier air flow), and way better than digital and isolative cars like the R8 v10 plus (not the cabriolet, the cab sounds great). The 718 obviously sounds good for a 4 banger but still the pitch progression is very minimal in contrast (and only in contrast). It feels less intense despite going faster.
Great to see a new video from you Guido! I was really happy to hear your thoughts on these. I still haven't driven the 718 yet but from everything I've seen and read, it seems like most journalists agree with you. I'd rather have a used model with the 6 cylinder instead.
Haha I agree! I'd love to review the whole Porsche range. Unfortunately they still won't send me cars and most reviewers here in the U.S. have a hard time getting them too, only the huge outlets like Motor Trend can manage to get them. I guess Porsche figures they don't need a lot of reviews?
Totally agree with you Guido - but I think Porsche's engineers didn't understand that cylinder deactivation can get you to pass the emission tests and the end user can always legally defeat it......let's hope Porsche makes a new Carrera GT with a flat 4.56 liter 8 some day that is built on a stretched "983" - Andreas P are you listening ? Have it be priced the same as a GT3 and see what your enthusiasts will choose ?
Since I've owned a Boxster S 987.1 a few years ago, I cannot get out of my mind that n/a 6 cylinder engine and I'm always dreaming about returning to porsche again.
Guido- Sounds like the 981 is the last Cayman/Boxster that checks all the boxes from a driving experience standpoint. Is the 981 worth the financial premium over that 987.2?

As others have noted...Where have u been hiding? Anyway, I liked your accurate assessment of the 718. I think u hit it on the nose. I understand why Porsche had to stick in that 4. Nice as a daily driver but it kind of loses the driving thrill we Porsche enthusiasts live 4. I'll keep my 981 S any day.

I'm very surprised that you were able to fit in it! I tried the seating position in the current Boxster, and all i could see (with the seat in the lowest position it would go) was the windscreenframe. But I'm only 187cm. My Feeling is that in the old generation i could actually see out front. (tried the same with an Alfa 4C and the Alpine A110, and only in the Alpine could i see whats in front of the car.)
