2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring & Carrera T - (Two Takes)

In this video, Matt Farah and noted Porsche collector and enthusiast Spike Feresten hit the canyons in a pair of Porsche's newest enthusiast-focused models ending with the letter T: The Carrera T, and the GT3-T, both for Touring. The $175,000 (as tested) GT3-T is a very special car; absolutely belonging in the "buy and hold" department. But the Carrera T is no slouch either; its engineered lightness and choice combination of performance options mean this "entry level" model is truly oriented towards the kind of folks who want a GT3 but can't get one.
Check out Spike's Podcast, 'Spike's Car Radio' at Podcast One!
www.podcastone...
Porsche Cars, North America, provided the Carrera T, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review. Spike just showed up, and got nothing for it.

Now this is THE formula for the new matt videos: -two comparable cars -host + guest -seat swaps PS. I know that i just kinda described head2head, but that's where it's at...

It sounds like a good idea but some owners of cool cars are not good drivers. You don't want to sit with someone through the canyons if you don't know how well they can drive. One rookie mistake and you're off the side of a cliff.

KvnS S you're right about that, but I meant the guest to be someone from the business (another jornalist, car collector or racing driver)

Why all the hate on this guy. I don’t get it. He has 3 Porsche’s and his opinion is valid and he’s a solid driver.
@mdcohen
@mdcohen 6 лет назад
CCFerrariF1 it’s the fetishization of specs to the point that he considers some owners real enthusiasts and others not. It’s his hate towards others. He buys and sells a lot so he cares about the secondary market preferences-which is fine-but he takes it to such a point that he’s putting down other car guys.

I attended Porsche Driving School at Barber Motorsports Park this past weekend. We drove the 911 GTS, 911 Turbo S, Panamera Turbo, Cayman and Boxster S. The only car they did not have was the T. The GTS was the star on the track but the Turbo S was a blast during the launch control segments. We did not get to drive the GT3 but at the end of the day, pro drivers took us for hot laps. I really wanted a GT3, but after a "real" lap in a GT3, I decided I don't need that. It was a true holy sh!t experience. Also, don't knock the Cayenne. they have a great off road course and that vehicle could do things that were absolutely amazing.

Pretty funny all these people in the comments without a clue who Spike is and don't realize they're good buddies. You would think Matt letting him drive would have tipped them off. Spike has been on Matt's podcasts and Matt is almost a permanent fixture on Spikes podcast. This was an awesome episode.

Trey Quattro agree, who the hell cares. I don't even give a damn about celebs let alone some you tuber that has a channel, big freakin deal, his opinion happens to differ from mine and many other racers and porschephiles I know. Just cause you have a GT3 doesn't make your word the last word. I tend to like Matts way of car talk vs others. (Even as a car fanatic, I can admit that most dudes that talk cars just sound like total kooks and kind of creepy nerdy, which is why I resist from talking too much car talk around the ladies, especially Porsche talk). Matt and especially Chris Harris do a great job with it, most others don't. And holy hell, can someone please learn to drive?

The weight isn't that big of a deal. It's much more how light it FEELS than how light it IS. The LSD, PASM, sport suspension, and most importantly, rear steer (not available on Carrera) add an extra level of agility to the Carrera T you don't get with the base car. Sure, it's a nuanced difference, but a difference nonetheless.

For two guys who are supposed to know about cars, there are numerous mistakes and omissions in this review. A few examples top of my head: the RWS is not about creating a tighter turning radius.. its about how the rear of the car follows you into turns, especially right decreasing radius or hairpins. my mother would talk about maneuverability in a parking lot.. please, don’t do the same.. talk about dynamics. Also, when comparing to 911R.. you completely omit the major difference to the gt3.2. #1: 911R has a single-mass flywheel, which changes the perception of lightness in the engine, especially in how it revs. However, the gt3 has a non-pneumatic valvetrain, which allows for less oil usage and much much faster race to redline vs the old 911R 4.0. Additionally, you fail to mention the dual intake parameters which give the gt3.2 that midrange Torque which the R lacks. #3: your entire convo on ceramics is juvenile, lacking depth and accuracy. Pccb’s are not going to give you shorter stopping distances, what they offer is fade-free perfoamce vs steel performance in repeat applications. How much horsepower your car has has nothing to do with whether you should select that option, it’s if you’re doing repeat lapping in very hot temperatures that the ceramics may be of benefit… Only reason I’m taking time to write all this crap, is that it’s disappointing to have two presumed real gearheads, and one gt3 owner, be so shallow/surface in their assessment, and straight-up incorrect in multiple areas of this review. Young enthusiastic kids could have talked their way through this comparo, if you’re catering to a real gearhead community, put a little more effort, research into your product. Anyone can go out and drive two cars, but to offer true value to your viewers requires a bit more effort.

Great video Matt. Not sure if you have experienced The No lift shifts in the GT3 but it is epic. The new manual GT3 gearbox comes out of the box and even without pressing the sport bottom with power shifts feature allowing you to keep your foot buried into the gas pedal while shifting into the next gear, giving you perfect shift at 9000 rpm redline and similar to PDK shifts. Again great video. Mark

Agree. I track both my gt3 and 911. There is little advantage to the carbon brakes . You avoid some fade with the carbons if it is 110 degrees in Palm Springs after 30 laps. But carbons are otherwise just grabby. Like you said. And fabulously expensive to service. No way they are worth it. Even if you get half your money back when you sell. Which I won’t ever do. On the other hand, the front lift seems, at first, ridiculous . But I would have worn my front end off if I didn’t have it.

The main problem with ceramic brakes is not the upfront cost or the sqeauling, it’s having to replace TWO rotors at around $30K with labor when a stone chips one rotor, or the mechanic nicks it changing your wheels. I would never be able to relax having these brakes.

Amazing he said 356, it has always been 991. And the couple guys I know that have the R are NOT running out to buy a touring, they are keeping them, they also both have 918. Also it never got to 700-800k, it got to 400-500k at most. A buddy of mine that does have a touring on order (Miami blue) wanted an R but never got allocation due to not being a 918 owner. He also has a GT4, 997.2 GT3 full sharkwerks, a 991.1 Carrera S (along with some others like four lotus and a Mc, crazy that he couldn't talk his way into an R from the dealer).

I kinda agree with Matts statement...the base car is fundamentally the same. The T is for enthusiasts to feel special inside. Rolling into cars and coffee then winking at other old men sounds creepy though... A loaded AWD S or GTS with PDK gets my pick. Ultimately a turbo S if I could afford it. I like fast planted cars optimized for daily use. GT3 or T is the other side of that philosophy.

@MarMPB
@MarMPB 4 года назад
Anders Jensen That was the comment I was looking for! The GT3 T is obviously the better car, but you can match the HP and get much more TQ even with the Carrera T (small turbos) engine. Also, another advantage of the Carrera T buy is that you can get optional itens only available for the “S” model, like the torque vectoring. That’s why I bought one and because I can’t afford a GTS or a GT3 T or so many superior Porsche models. Ahah

@Beauchee Well spotted. Ouch ! When I bought my steed from a non Porsche specialist, they wouldn't touch cars that had hit the limiter more than twice (they were rightly wary of cars that had been tracked and driven by Orangutans on the rev limiter, causing potential engine damage). Their mechanical sensitivity always resonated with me. (P.S. I'm not suggesting anyone on the channel is orange or has long arms).

I have PCCB on my Cayman GTS. It's always worth it. The lack of brake dust alone is a blessing! With Turbos coming to the GT3 soon, I'm hoping that it'll still sound sharp inside. As Spike stated, "nothing I hate more than 18 way seats". It's a keen remark. And there is nothing more sillier than multiple power seats in a 2 seat or 2+2 sports car. Added weight, added electrics and wasted cost. A smooth, mechanical adjustable seats would be just fine. How far is the driver going inside the car? But, unfortunately vast majority of high end sport cars have them as standard equipment.

Regarding the ceramic brake noise on the GT3, I wonder if the passenger side rotors suffered from side-of-road debris contamination at some point in their service life. Pure speculation on my part. Always fun to hear some 911 goodness and "keep it basic" with a $175k car makes me chuckle.

I love the new Carrera T, but $7500 for ceramic brakes? Nope. You don't need 'special' brakes on this car unless you're tracking it.

"Need"? It's more of a " want" in this very case

Heavy usage track drivers prefer the steel brakes cos they are cheaper to replace seen on some of the Nurburgring porsches
@evanescent0311

“Special brakes” (PCCB) are awesome but when it comes time to replace them ... ouch. Which will likely be the 2nd owner’s responsibility. Just like me with my M6. After two track sessions I went from 60k mi life expectancy to only 14k mi. I just hadddd to take it on track to see what it could do though. Question is: replace with CCB next time or swap to steel? Hmmmm.

Great video guys. enjoy your podcasts as well. Trying to decide Base vs Carrera T. Do you think the Limited slip diff and shorter rearend make the T worthwhile? I just test drove a Base and have really got the bug for a 911. Thanks again for yall's content.

To me I think the T needs two things a TUNE for 50 extra ftlb of torque and leather door pulls instead of that cheap looking fabric door pulls. Also, the rear wheel steering is a way to set this as a real handling car at a price.
@johngalt5411
@johngalt5411 Год назад
The prices have jumped considerably since this video. With just $2K in options you're now looking at $128K and try getting into one at list if you can find one at all.

I normally like Spike, but in this video he's kinda annoying. I get the car is his baby, but does he really think Matt wants to damage his car?

Since they’re friends no, he doesn’t think that. It’s just natural in my eyes for anyone to be nervous about someone else racing their car on backroads. Add to that the different sensation of being a passenger in your own car. I’ve never seen spike before but he’s definitely talkative. Talkative people default to chatting when they’re nervous.

Tony's reef keeping I think it’s because of how annoying Matt was towards him (Spike) when Spike was driving the Carrera. I love Matt, but he is the absolute worst when it comes to being a passenger lol.

On the shirt, in europe that's a medium. Xxxl is for 500 pounder people.
@jgripen969

Yea and as always with the US; they think Europe is one country. I can assure you that a medium size French t-shirt is definitely not the same as a medium size t-shirt here in Sweden. It’s common knowledge here that different clothing brands will fit differently, regardless of the stated size on the apparel piece.

Matt, always enjoy your videos - but please put a polarizer filter on your camera. The reflection of the dashboard is bad. (Or put the cam outside)

I dont like Spikes comment on carbon brakes. Im sure they can be better but on the street they wont make a difference and on the track there is a reason people take them off, even if thats price.

To me these days, the biggest indicator of who's a special enthusiast is just about who drives a manual. Don't need a special edition for that...just who's actually interested in driving vs who's interested in MFR 0-60 claims.

I just don't get the T for "touring", and then you take away all the nice creature comforts and make it less luxurious? T should be going the other direction, with more weight and more luxury. Porsche should've called this a "Carrerra RS", not a T.
