The Intercooler's Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel compare three Porsche 911s that look similar on paper, but feel very different to drive. Is the 911 GT3 Touring the best drivers' 911 you can buy? Or is the much cheaper, far less powerful 911 Carrera T actually the one to have?

I had a 991T and replaced it by a 991 GT3 Touring. Why ? Because the T gave me so much fun, not only in driving it but also in terms of Porsche community, that I thought it would be worth the investment to step up to a GT3T. I am very happy with the Touring and would not want to go back to a T, but if I needed to for whatever reason I would still be very happy with the T. Two notes : I daily drive the GT3 also in the city, not a problem of being to hard suspension, not at all. I learned that the manual gives more pleasure (my T was automatic). My plan is to keep the GT3 Touring forever and put 400.000 km on it in the next 20 year

The GT3 Touring in the UK is virtually unobtainable unless you are a very very “special” customer or prepared to pay way over the odds on the used car market.

yes that's a bad thing. Here in Belgium we can of course tap into the german, dutch and so on cars that come on the market. Nevertheless in the used market there are often only about 15 cars available in all of europe... @@hpman911

992 GTS lightweight package owner here. I haven’t driven the 992 T or GT3 so I do not know what I am missing but, what I love about my GTS is it really likes to be driven hard. It just never seems phased by anything I ask it do. I’ve spent time in 992 GTS on the track and the street and I find it extremely enjoyable in both situations. I enjoy a car that isn’t so glued down that I can’t get it a little loose at less than race car speeds. I’ve had cars that had such a high grip threshold that they weren’t really fun to drive on the street. I imagine I’d really enjoy the T for day to day. The GT3 on the track. I feel like the GTS is my Goldilocks car.

@a004
@a004 2 месяца назад
@@radans99 you do notice the increased road noise. It's not a big deal for me, especially when it allows you to hear the engine more. But could it be an issue on a long road trip? Maybe. I have still yet to test that out. But overall it's not a deal breaker or major issue for me. What is a major issue for me is the back up camera, it absolutely sucks. So make sure you spend the extra money on the birds eye view 360 cam. Also the stock sound system is a joke. I don't listen to music but if you do, you have to upgrade to the bose. The stock is unbearable. Other than these two issues, the car is amazing.

I’ve had a 2018 991 Carrera T manual with rear wheel steering for the past 5 months and it’s blown me away. For all the same reasons Dan cites for the 992. You just don’t need more on the road and because it’s 380bhp (whatever you do DON’T chip one - you’ll spoil it) you use all the revs and all the gears. SUCH a fun car. The GT3 Touring with its naturally aspirated prowess, the Carrera GTS balancing performance with daily usability, and the Carrera T offering a more raw and visceral experience. I wonder if the fact that the T is lighter and also has smaller brakes and more normal seats also contributed to it feeling a bit more compliant. Smaller brakes means less unsprung rotational mass which means better ride quality.

@@ss-mw9dj Well, fair question although I don't think it's really a matter of "better" but rather, what flavor suits your use case and desires. For me I have had G50 Carreras for decades and love the visceral experience yet is a very drivable car on the street - it's just fun. I wanted that in a modern Porsche and honestly the T is that and more. The thinner glass, reduced noise insulation, and lighter weight delivers that. Despite it having the "small engine" it's still faster than anyone can truly use on the street. (I live at the base of HWY1 in California). The T also has PASM with fully adjustable suspension and sits 10mm lower than the GTS. To my knowledge, sprung the same as the GTS. And yes... it's cheaper - to buy, to maintain (think brakes, etc), to register, etc. Again... ultimately it's a personal choice 👍
@nvanpraag
@nvanpraag 9 месяцев назад
@@ss-mw9dj Wow... why so unfriendly? I literally said it was a personal choice. I also said, "to my knowledge" when referring to the suspension. I did do a lot of homework over the last 30 years of owning Porsches and through the process of spec'ing, ordering, and acquiring my 2023 Carrera T. And BTW... The T suspension has a lot more in common with the GTS (minus the helper springs) than the S. See 3:20 in the Smoking Tire review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MxOty4uzGZQ.html. @@ss-mw9dj Like I said, it's personal choice. Porsche makes more variants of the Carrera than any other car model so customers can find their own flavor. The T is a hidden goodie. So is the GTS. Just enjoy it and stop worrying about what others may choose.

Fascinating ! If I could (in my dreams), I’d choose the three. The Carrera T because it’s the purest and probably the closest to the spirit of its ancestors ; the GTS which I drive regularly (in 4WD configuration), appreciate and enjoy very much ; the GT3 Touring for its elegant yet powerful looks and of course the fabulous 4.0 aspirated flat-6, while aware that the car is not a practical daily driver on poor roads. But now that the 911 S/T has been unveiled, I think that despite the inconveniences (and the price), this one would be my ultimate choice (in my dreams 😄).

Amazing video! It's so refreshing to watch a very well made car review in the old-school style again that I'm missing more and more as RU-vid videos keep changing and moving away from the traditional format. I kind of agree with this verdict, I think the Carrera T offers the "affordable thrills" (affordable by supercar standards) that the old, bare-bones RWD Carreras used to provide, which the GT3 Touring does not because it's got so expensive and hard to acquire for one thing, and it appears too aggressive for road use. However, I don't like that it's widebody now since Porsche just canned the narrow body 911s. I really think the T would've been even better if they had kept it a narrow body.

Did not do the GTS justice at all… for example, did not even mention the standard Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, the Turbo brakes, the quasi-bespoke dampers… Also, this is the most raving review of the T I have ever seen even though it’s basically a glorified base Carrera. Surprised you didn’t feel just how relatively slow it is after being in the GTS and GT3. My take: If you want more comfort and affordable, you get the T. By the way, it’s only 95 lbs lighter than GTS (basically can’t even feel it). For 9/10 people, if money or getting an allocation isn’t a factor, you wouldn’t get T over GTS. If you want the quickest (highest torque) and most engaging balance of race car and daily sports cars, you get the GTS. No brainer and why it’s the most in demand as the sweet spot in the lineup. If you want a naturally aspirated engine, highest HP, and a pure race car, you get the GT3.

I had a 991 Carrera S, which I loved, but it was almost too compliant. I was looking for something more raw as I already have a Lexus for my daily driver. I'd be perfectly fine with a rough-riding GT3T. In fact, the 991.2 GT3T is my semi-realistic dream car.

Great review. I have a 992S and much prefer it to the GT3 and GTS as the ride quality is better. For track use those are better, but IMHO as a daily a T or an S are better options.

Well said. Yes, the GT3 is a halo car as far as being a bullet-proof track weapon, and the Touring edition is great for those who don't want to advertise, but then it's not really a good touring car anyway.. I suppose the rarity is also what appeals to wealthy consumers, just as the new S/T is the stealth GT3 RS.. But as an actual car that most of us would enjoy driving? I might go for the GTS if I were looking for a turbo model, but I also like the Carrera S which has more than enough power and has the luxury/daily driver thing nailed. I just got a 718 Spyder, which, so far (it's not yet broken in) is just about perfect IMO. I wouldn't want a stiffer-riding car for just enjoying on the road, I found the GT3 too harsh on anything but great road surfaces. Those are nuances that aren't talked about much on youtube videos, where massive hp and ridiculous 1/4 mile times/drag races dominate.

I’m lucky enough to have had 9 911’s to date including a 991 T a couple of 4S in 997 and 991 specs, three GTS’s Including a 992 GTS Targa I’ve recently sold. I’ve also had a bogo 992 too so done the rounds. At moment I’m just about to buy in 992 guise either a 22 plate GT3 Touring, a new 992 T or a a five month old 4S with full sports pack and aero. This is best review I’ve seen but boy has it thrown me!!! Damn you guys.

Really good review and I’m not surprised with the verdict. I came from a Jaguar F Type R to a 991.2 Carrera and never felt like I was missing out on pace, power or fun (only noise!). Even then the basic 911 is a real peach. If I’m just a tiny bit critical of this review, there’s zero feedback about how the cars brake and how tractable they are out of corners. Nor how with that, they can carry momentum and difference between keeping the NA on the boil with its higher powerband versus the different challenge you face with the less responsive 3.0 TT. All in all, a really enjoyable review though.

Great video guys. What tires were on the GT3 you tested? A friends GT3 was delivered with Cup2's, and due the car being used mostly in cold wet Scotland, he changed them to PS4s. The ride and busyness became much better. I'm sure their could be an interesting article for you guys in a tire ride comparison test!

I think the big issues with the GT3 ride are tied to the use of track-oriented tires. PS4s are perfect tires for road driving, though when it's cold (10C or less) in Scotland, you may need to also think about winter tires.

From what I’ve read the GT3 Touring has an identical suspension set up to the regular GT3 so any difference in comfort is purely down to the choice of tyres.

4.0 NA Manual … I would choose it 100 times out of 100 opportunities. I had the 992 C2S (7 speed manual) prior to the GT3 Touring(6 speed manual) It’s a Sports Car - If you want comfort and compliance- drive a Range Rover or an Escalade. If it’s about price… I recommend something other than a Porsche 911. Just my $0.02

Good review, and very fair. The GTS on paper has less HP than the GT3, but real world the GTS on a dyno has more. Obviously delivery is different, mid v top. But for me the NA engine will always win. Mate an I just did the compare of these three, plus the S (8wks ago). I have the GT3, he ended up choosing the GTS at list and now allocated. That is the benefit of the 911 range, there is ONE to suit EVERYONE! I think Porsche does this so well!

143, 122 and 103k are academic. I’ve a T on order and it’s a bit of a struggle to keep a spec I want below 120k. Waahwaah… first World problem, but just making the point that there’s no such thing as a list price Porsche. Nice to see Frankel, interesting views on the 3 cars and whilst I’d absolutely love a Touring, I suspect that as a car, I’ll enjoy the T more often than I would an appreciating asset. I’m not that into a GTS tbh. Too much of everything for me.

Was a very good clear video comparing all the cars. They are all RWD. I would go for the 992 or upcoming 992.1 911 Turbo S £180.6K UK MSRP. Or one of the Panemara Turbo S (Coupé or Gran Turismo) with the Lamborghini Urus/ Bentley Bentayga; Audi RSQ8 VAG 4L V8 bi-turbo engine. Or the two body styles: Coupé or Gran Turismo with the Panemara Turbo S E-hybrid at 700 PS the most powerful model Porsche make. It’s the Bentley Flying Spur for less money: Top Turbo S e-hybrid £149K.

Hi folks, as I was curious about the weights mentioned in the video, I just looked it up on the Porsche web site. Here comes the result, all cars 2WD, manual, DIN: 992 GT3 Touring: 1.418 kg 992 T: 1.470 kg 992 GTS w. Lightweight p.: 1.485 kg As expected, not the T but the GT3 is the lightest, and the diff GTS to T just 15 kg. Someone feeling that 15kg while driving must be very sensible. I honestly believe, the guys are feeling the higher spring rates of GT3 and GTS way more than the weight. Either way, 3 cool cars.

It is a bit of a marketing gimmick. Porsche said the T is the lightest Carrera, which isn't wrong because GT3 is NOT a Carrera. There are three series within the 992: Carrera, Turbo and GT3. They are just trying to be creative to sell more cars. 😀 And I don't know how the S/T fits. Technically and mechanically it is closer to a GT product than the run of the mill Carrera. The S/T is the lightest 992 for sure.

Good review but when you talk about price you have to talk about depreciation. The best yet touring is the 991.2 GT3 touring not the 992 as the 991.2 GT3 touring is much more supple (in fact spring rates are about 50% less). My own reality check and what I have done since the 997 series is go for the RS for hardcore sports car and GTS for daily. In fact, probably the best all rounder is the 718 (982) 4L NA Cayman GTS - its really great at everything and still has a high revving NA engine. Never really warmed to the T and they tend to get flicked on fairly quickly (I have driven both 991 and 992 variants and would say good but not memorable).

I have a 991.2 manual gt3. The ride and suspension is outstanding even on rough roads. Haven’t driven the 992 gt3 for comparison- but from what I have heard including a performance driver instructor who has owned both the 991.2 is more street compliant- he also said his lap times (and this guy is good) are about the same in both cars - seems to me the 991.2 gt3 is the best of both worlds..?

992 GT3 is in another league from any of the other Carrera models. Double wishbone suspension is an absolute game changer, the naturally aspirated engine with individual throttle bodies that no turbocharged engine will ever be able to come close to, the absolute perfect 6-spd manual versus the (comparatively lackluster) 7-spd manual …..it may be hard as hell to get and come with an astronomically higher price but there is a very clear reason for that once you’ve driven them all
@papa_pt

it's too stiff for daily. Porsche effed up by not giving the Touring softer suspension (and I'd say rear seats) There's a reason the regular GT3 exists, may as well differentiate the two trims

@@papa_ptwhat many many 992 GT3 owners have discovered (myself included) is that a trip to Center Gravity to have the geometry tweaked transforms the car into a British B road blaster and for less than the cost of a single Cup2 tyre. An absolutely transformational process. I thought I’d mad a huge mistake swapping my 718 Spyder for the GT3 until CG “fixed” it. I agree with you in that it’s baffling that Porsche deliver the touring set up as it is.

Just ordered a GTS. I have a GT3 (One with the big wing) and the carbon race seats are a killer on a long journey and the roll-cage makes the back of the car unusable. But it is a race car you can drive to the track not a car you can use every day unlike GTS.
