That would be the renowned jazz composer, lyricist, and Basie co-collaborator Frank "Blues in Hoss' Flat" Foster. I have played a lot of his arrangements over the past fifty years, as has the rest of the world. His musical contributions are legendary. Likewise, his role as a husband and father obviously worthy of your tribute. God Bless you and your family. 👑

Mr. Chamorro: Greetings from America. I am a player and teacher in Long Beach, CA, USA. For many years, I was a disc jockey at radio station KLON (now KJAZZ in Long Beach) A long, long, long, LONG time from now, there is a very special place for you in heaven. Every time you step in front of these kids you make the world a better place. I have a vibraphone next to my computer. Thanks for letting me play with you today! One of my life goals is now to travel to Europe and hear you live. I saw another video where you do "Everything Happens to Me." Matt Dennis. And then the Jobim stuff. What class and elegance.

Thank you Vicente. Note the way that Alba's whole body reacts (and the rest of the band) when the tenor sax comes in behind her around 1:03. It's like they are all dancing! FYI: I played on the same stage with that same tenor player, Scott Hamilton when I was the same age as these kids. I played vibes in the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band. He was on the program. No, I didn't play with Scott Hamilton, but our band was directed by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis! Trombonist Andy Martin was in that band (we drove up together in my Buick). I remember Thad Jones saying to Andy, "Where did you learn to play so high?" When I watch this I feel like I am 18 again. I know exactly how these kids feel.

Yesterday, another commenter, wellandweasel, asked, "Do I hear a little bit of Ella Fitzgerald in Alba?" My answer would be, Yes, you probably do. The recording history of the song may explain why, though, admittedly, this is a guess on my part. The tune was written in 1955 by Frank Foster, one of the Basie band's tenor players, and it was originally an instrumental. (I used to hear Basie play it back in the fifties, at Birdland.) Then, some years later, Foster co-wrote, with Ella Fitzgerald, lyrics for the tune. This was done for an Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie record date that was issued as an LP called "Ella and Basie" in 1963. It was the first, but not the only, recording of the vocal version. Sarah Vaughn did it on an LP released the next year. My guess, based on a few bits that she sings that are almost identical to what Ella does, is that Alba listened to the Ella-Basie record, possibly in order to learn the song. However, if you listen to the Alba-SAJB version and the Ella-Basie version (it's on Spotify) back-to-back, you quickly discover that Alba is no mere copycat. Despite the slight similarities, she basically brings her own style and sense of swing to the proceedings -- and good for her. If you're a young jazz singer, there's no shame in learning from the best. But she's rapidly developing her own style, and she's the real deal. Speaking of similarities, pianist Jan Domenech's intro sets the band to swinging from note one, and that intro, along with his later solo, captures the spirit of Basie's spare, not-one-note-too-many piano style, again without being a copycat. The maestro would surely approve. Indeed, the whole band has got the Basie medium-tempo groove down to perfection, and when Scott comes in behind Alba, he kicks the groove even deeper. I've seen a lot of big bands over the years, but I've rarely seen one that looks as blissed out as this one -- just watch the heads bobbing in time with the beat and the smiles all around. There's a look that performers of all kinds -- jazz singers and instrumentalists. opera singers and classical musicians, even figure skaters, among others -- sometimes get when they know they've absolutely nailed it. That's what we're seeing here. There's an old saying about the Basie band, that "they can swing you into bad health." The SAJB can, too.

The SAJB is such a superb band, they can really swing hard. Close your eyes and you hear Count Basie. Carla's guitar adds something extra. The years pass and the original group of young musicians have left and spread their wings elsewhere but the SAJB keeps swinging away. Its Joan Chamorro's magic guidance at work.

Joao gave them EVERYTHING, I've never seen a group like he had established a few years ago, at that age, with even six and seven year olds, play like they played, not in America, (and I'm an educator as well, and a friend of Clarence Acox, who took the top National award for high school jazz band [Garfield High] every year it seemed) and Joan teaches them by ROTE (like a typical black gospel choir is taught in USA) - although I see them more with sheet music now, that was not always the case, and that would be, in my estimation, why they are so very good, he taught them how to HEAR first, not just read. I'm an American, and a fan of Scott Hamilton, he's tops, but don't, please, try to diminish what Joao has done, it is astounding. They would be tops without ANY outside help, though it's not a bad thing.

Joan,you must have one of the worlds best sound systems in your house,just put a sheet of music in front of each chair,lift your arms,count to 4,and you get the sound of a very polished ensemble with sweet vocals from Alba and a real life Scott Hamilton tenor solo.It can't get much better than that.
@zdogg8
@zdogg8 5 лет назад
Sound system has zero to do with it.....this is how a well coached, well directed band sounds, they don't need electronics, they listen to each other and get a natural balance. Acoustic properties of the room itself may play a role, those are either conducive or not.
@DWilliams-ce8nb
@DWilliams-ce8nb 5 лет назад
I would agree on the sound engineering. Everything Joan does is professional. This brilliant young band deserves the best, and they are certainly getting it with the sound people (and the very best sound people are not noticed - until they leave, and you bring in less than professional ones) ---- look closely at the front row - there is a mic for each and every sax - as well as every other instrument in the band. Then comes the mixing and balancing, etc This is complex stuff (if done right)
@zdogg8
@zdogg8 5 лет назад
@@DWilliams-ce8nb You're right, I was looking on a small screen, didn't detect the plethora of mics. But there is no "sound system" (like PA system) and I was thinking that was the suggestion, but he might, just as well, be referring to the recording mics......So, on the recording idea, I stand corrected, but not sure he couldn't get the same sound, or close, with a couple of mics in the front, stereo piano, and maybe one on the bass, couple of overheads on the drums, something like that. But either way, he gets the sound and they would not sound that different from the stage, they have that sound and sense of balance.
@DWilliams-ce8nb
@DWilliams-ce8nb 5 лет назад
@@zdogg8 I'm sure I thought the same thing before getting into the film and video production business. My first (and costly lesson) was thinking I, and a few helpers, could do the sound and lighting. I was soon scouring the city for the most experienced sound and lighting designers I could find. Huge difference in production values. And I gladly "paid the Piper". BTW, There are a few SAJB videos (very few) with amateurish sound. They do a horrible disservice to the brilliance of this group. OK. I'll get off my soap box. Won't happen again any time soon:) And cheers to all my fellow SAJB fans!
@zdogg8
@zdogg8 5 лет назад
@@DWilliams-ce8nb I have a recording studio and I do video as well. He gets a good sound, no doubt, so no argument there. It can be overkill is my point. Big bands never recorded that way, at least, back in da day. "Oh Happy Day," Edwin Hawkins Singers, big crossover gospel hit, was recorded in a church live to two track and it is stunning, along with the rest of the album, all recorded the same. So, it just depends, the "x" factor is the room, mostly. If you don't like the "room tone" you might have to mic up close to mitigate that. Depending on location, you're not always going to have the luxury of close mic'ing each instrument, of course. I think that is his apartment, so, he knows best, still I'd say, you probably could get a good sound with less. Taste wise, as well, a blended "in the same room" sound is often better, it certainly is with choir and also orchestra, though people often want the extra level of control of lots of discrete channels. YMMV.

Lyrics : Those silk shiny stockings That I wear when I'm with you I wear 'cause you told me That you dig that crazy hue Do we think of romance When we go to a dance Oh no, you take a glance At those shiny stockings Then came along some chick With great big stockings too When you changed your mind about me Why, I never knew I guess I'll have to find a new, a new kind A guy who digs my shiny stockings too Then came along some chick With great big stockings too When you changed your mind about me Why, I never knew I guess I'll have to find a new, a new kind A guy who digs my shiny stockings too A new guy who digs my shiny stockings too

I just recently discovered Joan Chamorro and Alba, and I immediately fell in love! This type of jazz music warms my soul. I guess this means I have to go back to Barcelona and hear you guys in person!

I will not admit to how many years I have been listening to and appreciating this song. I will though admit that I have never enjoyed it more.

I have damn near worn out the replay on this track. Alba was born for this song, and everyone just nailed it. I love watching the fun they're all having... Joan deserves endless credit for the incredible talent that has been developed in these great musicians.

Thanks to Joan Chamorro for dedicating himself to jazz music and promoting these young boys & girls beyond the scene, enabling them to express their amazing talent and gifts. The selected tunes and the recording are also just great. What else to say apart from "bravo" & best wishes to all!

Of all the songs written I think Shiny Stockings is the hardest not to tap your toes to. And the way the Young Band performs it there's absolutely no way to keep from tapping those toes.

Great tribute to the "Count", on a perfect rendition, with extraordinary talent gifted young musicians, and an "earth angel" on vocals.

This recording was what really got me into playing jazz. Scott’s solo was my first transcription, and this tune was the first one I took in all 12 keys. Amazing performance thank you!!!

Its a compliment. If you think about singers like Billy Holiday or Nina Simone, they're old souls - they've been around and experienced heartbreak and pain. Alba has a huge career ahead of her, she's marvellous, and still so young. No negativity meant at all by that comment.

There are so many great things in this recording (in alphabetic order): Alba, arrangement, band, composition, direction, Scott...Among the three best is Jan Domenech's piano solos. Count Basie would be proud!

@@anthonyfoster6419 If I am not mistaking you are the son of the great jazz musician & composer Frank Foster? I had the pleasure to listen him live several times in Pori Jazz Festival in Finland in 1980's and -90's. (I corrected my list of "great things" above)

How beautiful is it to hear Alba, then Scott, then the band rising to a wonderful tutti. Scott plays like a breeze through the wine - I listen and enjoy, eyes closed. After 3:40, I stir and have to look who's playing - Jan! with the coolest of solos, melodies trickling over the rim of the grand in all colours. Bravo!!

Good enough for Scot Hamilton, good enough for me. The look on the face of the young sax player in the foreground when Scot was soloing was beautiful. Summed it up. Am a devoted fan of these young players. Not forgetting the boss of course.
