#Toyota has always remained a very competitive player in the shrinking minivan segment over the years. The current generation #Sienna has consistently been one of the go-to choices for American families for years. With the 2018 model now approaching 9 years old, Toyota made a few changes in 2017 designed to keep this van relevant. The biggest change being under the hood with nearly 300 HP under your right foot and a new 8-speed transmission putting power to either the front or all four wheels. Buyers actually looking for a minivan to haul around your families may still find a lot to like with the current Sienna, despite its age.

once you get over "the loss of the man card" or "small penis syndrome", it all comes back when you realize how fucking functional the thing is. That v6 hauls ass for being a giant bus. It's expensive for a van but then again, everything is. Totally worth it on the used market.

You not the only one. I’m 24, not married, don’t have kids yet and I do love this minivan. I rather get this over luxury car. Why? This van is super comfortable, smooth on road or highway, good MPG, massive cargo area that you can easily fit a big fridge and the acceleration is great for minivan.

Completely agree, back in my late teens when I was surfing a lot I drooled over some of the vans on shore near the lineup. For camping nothing beats the Chrysler/Dodge vans though with the stow and go seats that make a nice flat floor, too bad about the reliability though.

@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947
The Odyssey is still the best looking among minivans to me. It has that interesting styling (that yet works) which makes it's design stand out from the crowd. The Sienna is still handsome (heck it does look pretty good in the SE trim at least), but it just looks like a regular minivan. Not that it's ugly... but just nothing special. Toyota might amp up the swag with the next generation of its "swagger wagon" hopefully coming ASAP. When it comes to reliability however, Toyota still has you covered of course (as usual).

I know mini vans have a bad rep, but if you just blur out everyone's opinion it is a great vehicle even for a single person. I work night shifts at a hospital, with meetings during the day. I take naps in my car so I don't have to drive home twice. That cargo space in the back looks like first class nap time to me!

We bought our SE sienna before we found out we were having our first. We needed the practicality and was the only nice looking van out there. We have had our 2018 XLE Sienna for over a year now, and love it. We had to have it modified for a wheelchair user (my son) before delivery. That gave it the power kneel feature, which raises the whole van about 10" higher than normal. Now it looks like a massive SUV. It drives beautifully. It is so much more secure and solid than the 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan that we had for 16 years (also modified for wheelchair). You really feel that you are driving a SUV, and with the almost 300 hp, it has all the power you need. Toyota's safety features are a bonus, and should be mandatory on all vehicles.

Lol Sofyan I appreciate the effort on the intro, but there’s only so much you can do to make the cargo room and folded seats of a minivan sexy. Nice try though bro. When my mother in law came to visit she rented a Sienna Limited. I was actually blown away by the level of refinement, technology, and space. We used it to haul some 4’x8’ tables and it swallowed them just fine. The Sienna also doesn’t rattle as much as the Odyssey does. The Odyssey’s cargo area is annoyingly loud. Overall, the Sienna is old, but thanks to a new V6 and transmission and standard autonomous safety features, it’s not outdated. If I was shopping for a minivan, a loaded Limited with AWD would beat all the competition.

Back in the day when the world (and I) were young and dinosaurs roamed the highways, I owned a 1989 Mazda MPV minivan with AWD. It was a great van and its AWD once got me out of a ditch in deep snow on a logging road in the Cascade mountains. Might have saved my life, in fact. As I understand it, the Sienna is the only minivan to offer AWD and with a 300 hp engine it looks like a very good option, especially in harsh winter conditions and even in the messy winters we see in the Pacific Northwest. Would probably have avoided the wheel spin demonstrated in the review, in fact. Though I think the Odyssey is an overall superior choice, the AWD would be a major plus for me if I were in the market for a minivan.

Really surprised that Toyota hasn't upgraded the platform. Remembered that I rented a then brand new 2011LE v6 8 seater in late 2010 for a 2 week, 1500 mile family road trip from San Francisco, Anaheim, Grand Canyon and Vegas. Was quite impressed how it tackled the curves at Yosemite and curvier sections of Pacific Coast Highway 1. Nothing beats the convenience, load and people capacity and comfort of a minivan for a family road trip. Didn't like the really cheap looking interior though...seems like the later refresh didn't improve on it much.

Hoping for the next generation Sienna to come out soon. While this generation is still quite competitive (heck, the only AWD minivan?) and has aged well, I still think it's getting quite old.. ..I mean, Toyota gave us latest redesigns like the new Avalon that was almost perfect, the new RAV4 that was interesting, the new Camry that was impressive, and the new Corolla (both sedan and hatchback) that was surprising.. heck so far even the new Supra that seems badass... Toyota should bless the "swagger wagon" to amp up its swag within this segment. Responding to the insane SUV craze though: Even compared to the largest SUVs on sale, minivans are still more family-friendly than any SUV you can think of... :3

@cgrscott
@cgrscott 5 лет назад
I know I would enjoy the current Honda Odyssey over the current Sienna. But, something to consider, the Sienna has a timing chain while the Odyssey has a timing belt that has to be replaced every hundred K. The Honda Odyssey transmissions rarely lasts past 200k, while with the Sienna, you can possibly get 250 to 300k out of your original transmission. The lower trim levels of the Odyssey use the same 9 speed transmission that is in the Chrysler Pacifica which is more reliable than a genuine Honda Odyssey transmission. The upper trim level of he Honda Odyssey comes with a 10-speed genuine Honda transmission that drives better but may have the poor reliability that has plagued Honda Odyssey transmissions in he past. My heart wants the Odyssey but my desire for reliability with no timing belt replacements make me want the Sienna over the Odyssey, the Pacifica, and the Caravan.

Carlton C we don't get those here, but if Lexus made a minivan, it would be a Sienna AWD Limited in Pearl white. It's a near perfect vehicle for the family and does quite well in the snow.

@@Newzchspy never been into a Sienna before since we didn't get it in Asia, but I've been riding the 2017 Alphard for almost a year. I would say if Lexus make a luxury MPV, it would most probably a Toyota Alphard Executive Lounge V6 AWD in Pearl White. Might not have the length of the Sienna, but it's plenty spacious for 6.

Carlton C wish we got it here. Unfortunately, minivans here are on their way out and sales have been dropping the past 10 years. Anyone who has kids or a large family understands the utility. Neither Ford nor GM makes one. The Pacifica has done well. The Sienna is getting long in the tooth. The Odyssey makeover is two years old now and Kia has a decent unit. I just don't see much of a future for them with the popularity of the CUV segment ( think CRV, NX300 , RAV4 etc) . I am still waiting for the 2020 Gen IV Sienna that's been long promised (TGNA based). Long live Iacocco's "minivan."
@thecriticalthinkeroutsidet4947
Believe it or not though, Lexus actually planned rumours to bring a minivan in its lineup. (I'm sure about a month ago)

your review on the sienna is very bias,theres nothing wrong with the sienna except that it doesn't come supercharged or a turbo other then that its a great/awesome vehicle.

The Kia is actually more reliable than the Sienna, and ranks #1 in minivan reliability.

I just got a 12AWD. only 22mpg on the highway but for 20k and low miles it looks the same and new ones. almost. 266hp in the old. 6sp auto vs 8sp in the 17 and up. Direct injection usually has a cam driven fuel pump which may or may not be as reliable. Should be ok. Toyota. LOL. Redesigned the front end for 18 and added toyota safety sense standard. The AWD is really where its at. Can pull out in the rain and floor it. It just goes. Changing the trans fluid just turn the wheel. 2 10mm bolts move the flap. Drivers side. 26mm fill bolt. 6MM hex is the drain. Will the a laser thermo to get the proper level from the drain plug as it should be between 106 and 113 and just start to trickle out the drain at the bottom. My pan was 2 deg colder than the fluid which I drained out to checking the pan should be just fine for the level. You could also use a obd2 scan gauge for the trans temp. There is staw which is removable uses the same 6mm hex. inside the drain . Did a couple drain and fills on mine. The front Diff and transaxle share the same fluid. About .75qt and the rear diff is .48qt. Used 75-90w gl5. I recommend this over the honda for AWD. Honda getts 2mpg better but the transmissions usually dont last as long. I do favor the look of the honda but their quality of late has went downhill. I mean its a minivan so looks aint top priority. haha.

One thing I love about Toyota - they don't update parts (line the steering wheel and its switchgear) just to make it look more modern or sporty. If something works well, they just keep using it. This can make the car look a bit dated, but it has some major benefits. If a piece of equipment has proven itself to be functional and reliable, keeping it means it will contribute to the overall functionality and reliability of the car. Also, if you have ever driven a Toyota and get into a new one, you will be instantly familiar with the way things work - and if you are new to Toyota, you don't have to have an engineering degree to figure it out. Lastly, by using the same parts for years, Toyota can keep costs lower. Simplicity and a conservative approach to change, also helps Toyotas remain drive-able years after other cars have fallen apart.

Not bad for a family car, good engine too. But still I’d rather go for the top rage Highlander (or Kluger for Aus).

The next gen Sienna, which will be in the 2021MY will be wider, longer, better fuel ecomony. The next gen Sienna might get a hybrid version. The 2021 Toyota Sienna might get paddle shifters.

Why do so many cars these days have the Hideous door handles like the ones on this Siena? They are a blight and a carbuncle on the side of so many vehicles. The way to do it is the way the Range Rover Velar does it, or the Aston Martin DB9. Even my old 1988 Honda Accord that I had when I was a kid had beautifully flush door handles.

why i am I single person and considering buying a minivan? Dunno but I think I will like owning one. i feel like the Highland looks like a Minivan w/ the wrong doors attached, so I might as well just get a minivan and ahave all the room and comfy 3rd row seats that it has to offer before I get a Highlander
