This is my first motovlog and 500 mile review of my all new 2018 Triumph Street Triple RS! I got this bike 2 weeks ago and I have been too busy riding around and having fun to make a video. Rather than repeat the same first impressions you've heard before, this is an HONEST review after 500 miles of ownership. Comment below and let me know what else you would like to know!
This is my first new to me motorcycle after owning a number of used bikes since I started riding in 2012. My last motorcycle was a very well equipped Yamaha FZ-09. The Yamaha introduced me to the three cylinder engine which I have grown to love. The Yamaha had always left me wanting more and after seeing so many glowing reviews of the Triumph I knew I had to have it. The all new 765cc engine is an absolute gem and won me over.

I went from an 09' Daytona, which I did a lot of London commuting on, to the new 765RS, and I love it. Agree that it's really a Sport bike at heart but it's also SO easy to ride, feels familiar as soon as you sit on it. Chews up the daily commute just as easy as those twisties!

The slipper clutch on the 765RS makes it so easy to filter in traffic, I can imagine it's a massive improvement over the Dayton for you, cheers!

This is a great review, I like that you go into a lot of detail about the nuances of the bike and how it relates to real-world scenarios. Not that many reviews out there like it, probably due to the '500 mile review' format. Good work, keep it up!

That is the one version of the 675 that I was most interested in testing before I got this. One of my big requirements for the upgrade was traction control which the Rx didn't have. Lots to like on that model! I feel like that was the precursor to the RS version of the 765.

It's an amazing bike. Even with 15k miles on it I would have a hard time justifying upgrading. It does everything I need and sounds like a beast. I have the Coffmans exhaust and it's a bit loud. Sounds amazing in the canyons though.

I picked up my Street Triple R on August 16th, the only changes from stock so far are a quickshifter and tail tidy, I changed from a GSX-R750 as I'm getting too old for a hard core sports bike but even though I thought I'd miss the sporty side of the gixer I don't the Street Triple is every bit as good but with the bonus that it's much more comfortable.

Thanks The Driver's Perspective for the review. Just a brilliant one. I am commenting here because I saw that yonniboy1 has a Street Triple R and I am actually wanted both of your opinion or guidance in helping me chose between the two. To tell you frankly I am completely sold on the ST RS, this motorcycle is just the best in this category. However I feel that the RS is a bit overkill if you are not using that for Trackdays and I am most certain that I will not be going to the track. Does the features or additions that you are getting in the RS makes sense if you are only riding on the Road ? The supercorsa tyres, the ohlins rear monoshock, track rider mode, the Brembos M50 etc. "To me" (and I am no expert here) the R seems the more sensible option here and I can save the difference amount to get some accessories that would actually help. I would love to get both of your opinion as you guys are the expert here and have much more exp riding a Street triple :) Thank you in advance.

Nice that you've got a Miata & Triumph 765 RS! Fellow 765 RS owner here, picked mine up back in April. I would recommend the Arrow exhaust, had the dealer install it after the break-in and it comes with the Arrow map. It's only marginally louder than stock but it gave the bike a very organic and fruitier sound, plus the arrow map makes the power a little bit snappier, the icing on the cake I'd say!

i rock a 12 st3 675r, these bikes are what set the tone/pace for all other street fighters. the triumph street triple is an all around outstanding bike in al aspects of a motorcycle...power, agility, weight, functionality, hardware, electronics, suspebsions, brakes, etc. you will not find a bad/negative review on them from any year starting back in 2006, the are beautiful bikes

The RS is a true gem of a bike. I picked one of the first three RS's brought in by Rocket Motorcycles. I love taking mine up to Palomar. Hope to catch you up on the mountain sometime.

Exelent vid, had 4 street triples plus many litre bikes including the 2016 speed triple. Which i quickly traded in for the RS , no brainer, all the goodies plus quick shifter. This bike does everything , road race and track. And a good tourer. Happy riding people.

The SPEED now comes in RS trim, and it's a lot better by all the reviews than the prior version. Engine has gotten freed up a lot.

I'm torn between getting the new street triple R or a daytona 675r, the type of riding I do is mostly on the street and going to the mountains on weekends.. so the street triple seems like the more comfortable, logical choice for street riding. But the Daytona just looks so amazing haha

I also went from a drzsm to a fz09 and now have my RS. I feel you on the subject of the fz. It was a great bike with absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it just didn't pull my heartstrings. But the RS... abso-freaking-lutely got 3000 miles on mine already with a trackday, a road trip to the beach, and about 1500 miles of mountain twisties. Triumph did it right.

I still miss my DRZ400 SM so much, I should have listened to my wife and note sold it! I'd love to see Yamaha do something more with the FZ-09 but with the FZ-10 out I don't think that will happen. Can't wait to get the RS out to a track day, I'll be headed to one at the end of October once the heat dies in SoCal.

Great review. I am in the same situation. Selling my MT07 for a triple. When deciding on my next bike I knew I wanted something more comfortable than my supersport. I ended up on the MT07 and while comfortable with tons of torque the top end was disappointing.

Interesting review. Wishing my Sprint ST and Trophy SE had the Quick Shifter mechanism. Very pleased with both. The Trophy SE is my third Hinckley Triumph - fine motorcycles. They get alot of attention most everywhere I go - few seem to know they exist, sadly.

In all honesty, the quicker shifter is a cool gimmick but if you have proper technique it almost doesn't matter. Few percent less throttle with your hand, pressure on the shifter and bang. The only time I've been really impressed with it is when you are absolutely ragging the bike out asking for every last drop of power. Around town it's a little abrupt.

Just picked up a 2018 Street Triple R. Wanted the RS but the the R came up lightly used with about 2k in tasteful upgrades for under 8k. Had to jump. That’s said I too didn’t understand just what a sport bike it is. I rode it back from Portland to Seattle and man, I fell in love with that motor. I’m going to go get it set up next and I saved enough on it I’m fitting a quick shifter on it. Congrats, the MotoGP2 platform!! I love this bike.

These are great bikes that are ridiculously versatile. The R has a bit more torque which makes it more enjoyable on the street.

The Driver's Perspective Cheers and I certainly don’t need any more bike than the R I have certainly discovered. I do think that 6th gear could be a bit taller but I ain’t complaining. Overall it spanks every bike I’ve ever had in many categories. I love it, the motor and ergonomics are just perfect for my average size/weight/experience level. It’s no beginner bike that’s for damn sure.

Have you done any mods at all? Mine came with a couple and I must say the Remus Hypercone that came on mine is just a nice sweet spot for an exhaust. Just an FYI. Keep posting, I look forward to hearing more. I think we ride for the same reason. I too am not a street Rossi and just love the feel of a great bike. I think they nailed it.

Glad you mentioned the slipper clutch. I was getting all ready to ask why you appeared to be slipping the clutch on take off and now I know. Interesting as I've never ridden a bike with a slipper clutch before. Seriously considering going for the 'R' model - my favourite past bike was a 2010 Street Triple 'R' - but also considering the Speed 'R'.

Nice! Almost got this bike but ended up with the mt09 SP. The low end torque of the street triple just was a bit underwhelming. Slapped a more agressive handlebar on the mt09sp and seating position is a lot more sporty now😁

The MT-09 SP is an interesting bike and one I wish they sold in America. I made my own version of that with my FZ-09 (Ohlins shock and a fork kit) which transformed the handling. I do miss the motor in my old FZ-09, it was the center piece for that bike.

I found with clutch on the rs I'd to adjust the lever closer than I normally would as the clutch engaged way to far out in the levers range. Now that I've done that it's far more like what I'm used except with a way lighter pull because of the slip assist. Was like this on demo bike as well so I'm guessing it's just the way it's set as standard from the factory. Worth playing about with if you haven't already. Spot on review 👍👍, two thumbs up 😉

Just hit 600km on my own 18 RS, great review. Tip, press mode twice to keep the mode select up without vanishing in 2 seconds to get the mode you want when riding.

Congrats on the new bike. Great review! Sounds like a great bike with a lot of awesome features. Im currently on the market for a new bike and ride a upgraded fz09 for the last two years. However I think I'd have a hard time going down in cc's(850 to a 765) when it comes to a new bike. The first manufacturer to come out with a 1000cc triple, I'll be all over it. Til then I'll just wait.

Yes, Speed Triple is available here. Much bigger bike with a different purpose compared to the RS.

FZ-07 is a great bike! With a 125HP this one is definitely a touch too fast for those who are new to this sport.

Great vid. I'm considering the RS vs Fz9 plus all the suspension and brake mods as yours. Can you share ur assessment if the RS suspension is better than Fz09 with mods? And have you tried carrying a pillion with you on the RS yet? Is it good for 200 miles trip? Thanks.

1500 miles later...it is so hard to call. Both bikes are fantastic...if the FZ-09 had all the electronics the Triumph did I would have probably kept it. Overall the Triumph is a MUCH better bike on the ragged edge while the FZ-09 was better at 8/10ths. 200 mile trip? The Yamaha with a cheap $30 eBay windscreen is pretty hard to beat, but, if distance is the goal I'd look at a FJ-09 which has the electronics the Gen 1 FZ-09 didn't have.

Very nice video man! I've ridden quite a few superbikes including the Panigale 959, RSV4, Daytona to name a few. I've never been a fan of nakeds, but this was pure magic. The throttle felt on point and power delivery linear. I hit 181 kmph on my test run and I had to suddenly hit the breaks when I saw a speed radar, and I was shocked by the brakes! Fuckin' amazing bike! Congratulations on having her! :) I shall have mine in a few months I suppose.

You'll love it, make sure you ride it and then have your suspension guru set it up to taste. I ended up bring the forks up 5mm in the triple tree and it made a world of difference.

1 week to go before I'm back on a Street. Had a 675R before and a Daytona, so I'm hugely excited to get my new RS in a week's time. Quick Q though regarding the suspension... Have you tried backing it off a little for the street? I did that with my STR before and made the world of difference with bumpy roads.

I'm due for a new video on this bike, since then I've adjusted the suspension on it a few times and really got it dialed in for street use. The bike is even more plush now.

Hi TDP, Nice vlog, very informative. Would like to know whats the longest travel you did on this bike, and how would you rate the seating comfort as against a t100 or tiger 800. Is this a bike you would pick for long drives.. drives that are 300 miles one stretch. cheers

I've done a handful of 8 hour rides on it which usually end up as roughly 200-300 mile stints. No doubt the Tiger is going to be more comfortable with the wind protection on long freeway stretches but everywhere else the RS works just as well for me. So far I have not experienced any pain or discomfort on any of my rides of commutes. In fact, now that I think about it, the stock seat is also really comfortable. It has never been a source of discomfort either. The biggest thing to remember with bikes everyone is a little different on their preference on ergonomics. I HATE supersport bikes and liter bike ergonomics, it just doesn't work for me. On the other hand I know plenty of people who just love it and they'll ride it all day or even tour on them. The ergos of the RS also fit my body very well so I do not come off with aches and pains after a weekend ride.

I have the 18 street triple RS as well and just had the Triumph Arrow can installed. Exhaust is not much louder with a bit deeper with a growl. I like the sound considerably more. The biggest benefit is the new fuel map which not only enhances the exhaust but addresses many small items which needed it. For one the bike shifts much better, a lot of twitchiness has been removed and a dead spot at around 4500 rpms (especially in third and up) is gone. The biggest benefit is when I used to drive with a rider the bike was pretty weak. I now have a lot more low end torque and enjoy 2 up way more. On the whole this is the best bike I have ever had, loads of fun and with the new map it feels right.

That is really good to know! I am keeping my eyes open for a pre-loved Arrow system. I definitely have noticed the 4500rpm dead zone before but it doesn't bug me too much.

I feel that the British country roads are among the scariest raods in the world. With those hedges right next to the edge of the roads I would be terrified that a cow (particuarly if is a "Mad Cow"), a sheep, a goat, or possibly a fox or rabbit would jump out onto the road without warning causing one to lose control of a motorcylce and thereby wiping out and possibly being killed in the process. just saying Great video by the way ;-)

@@andylam4350 Couldn't be happier. The extra torque is more fun on the street and I just get along better with the MT-10. The RS is a weapon but just didn't quite work for me. I spent a lot of miles on an MT-10 before I bought one, a friend got one before I did. The 2021 MT-09 is probably an awesome bike, it seems like they fixed all of my original gripes with the bike.

Do you find that the slightly more forward position puts enough weight on your wrists to start to feel like you need to one hand ride to relieve the pressure? I've had a wrist injury that makes it painful to keep them bent as if I were on a super sport for more than 15 or 20.minites

It does put more weight on your wrists compared to an FZ-09 but not so much that I find it uncomfortable. I'd recommend test riding one to see how it works for you. If you support yourself with your core and legs you'll never notice it. I love mine!

Nice hearing your input having owned both two bikes I'm interested in. Seems like you do not regret giving up the FZ. Do you find that even though your FZ was upgraded, you still feel this is more well rounded solid bike out of the box and is worth it for the extra cash to just go for this one and not need to upgrade later on?

@@weemankyle Most Triumph dealers are really good about test rides and they usually have a handful of demo bikes on hand. You could definitely get bar risers or switch the bars if you didn't find it comfortable. I have almost no regrets about giving up the FZ, I only miss that sweet sweet motor cruising around town but I can overlook that. The RS is without a doubt significantly more refined in every way. Specs, reviews, and everything in between don't do it justice. It might be boring to some people because, quite frankly, it is damn near perfect out of the box. It is the ONLY bike I've ever owned and kept it bone stock down to the exhaust. For me, it's worth the completeness and not having to upgrade anything. It has saved me money in the long run too. The only thing I MIGHT, and a big might, is change the exhaust to the Arrow.

The QS in general commuting is rather abrupt. I always use the clutch on my RS around town. The QS is great when the revs increase.

The Striple RS is a great bike. And the FZ-09 is too much like a Supermoto. But if Yamaha puts the FZ-09 engine in a real sportbike Chassis (naked), the RS (and the R anyway) would have a real serious competitor, in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more, the FZ-09 engine is absolutely incredible and overwhelms the chassis it was put in. I do not think Yamaha knew how big of a hit that bike would be. The subsequent cost savings from a parts bin chassis and suspension really killed it from being a true Street Triple competitor.

I looked, and looked, and was ready to buy a FZ09 on price alone (it's main draw). I was lucky enough to have a STR fall into my lap at a price I couldn't refuse. It's a fantastic machine, way above the FZ09.

I’m planning to sell my Gs1200 Dec/17 for a RS, your thoughts please. Gs is comfortable but on higher speeds I do get a little vibration so it’s sweet spot is 180km/h. Compared to my Ducati Diavel which just sings at 200km/h. I believe e Triumph would be a smoother bike at the TOP end. Is e fuel tank keyless & strapping 50 litres of luggage not cumbersome. If the Triumph can do a 16 hour ride through multiple stops with the convenience of a lighter bike & smoother , trading my GS for the Triumph RS would make sense. I’m still trying to polish my skills on extreme corners & e fear of losing the Gs on those corners is real. A lighter bike might give me confidence. A GS is an expensive bike which I can’t afford a drop. The Triumph should be more hardier right? Please help me decide. The Gs cost me 47k to purchase second hand, less than a year old. I can sell it for slightly over 40k now after a year. A new Triumph will cost me 25k. I’m torn between keeping a supposedly iconic bike for a cheaper bike that I don’t have to baby as much. Any advice would be much appreciated?🙏🏼

The GS and the Triumph are very different bikes. Strapping luggage down is going to be the Triumphs weak point but you should be able to get most of the storage on the back with saddle bags and a top bag. I'd recommend looking at the Kreiga US-20 and US-30 bags with a pair of US-10 bags. It won't ever be as convenient as your GS, but it can get it done. Whether or not you'll be comfortable on the bike for 16 hours is a tough one to answer. I'd always prefer to be on the GS for something like that but again, I have found my Triumph to be very comfortable. I've done 8 hour days on it and I do not feel particularly beat up. The Triumph will handle very good and better than the GS, but the GS isn't a slouch! I think if you want a sportier ride the Triumph will server you well.

After having experience on the FZ-09 and moving to the 765RS, what is your body height and inseam? Do you find the 765 cramped a bit? How will your knees and hips feel after 100-200 miles? The Yamaha is a pretty open ergo package for taller sorts like myself (I've demo ridden it once). Considered the Z900? GSX-S750 or 1000? I mention these because they are within close budget. I've demo'ed the 1290 SDR and I can't imagine a better do-everything bike but I sure wish the cost was less. Torque of that thing.....shocking.

I am about 5"11" and ~31-32" inseam. I do not find the 765 cramped one bit but I would not want any more aggressive of a seating position. The bars feel like a bit of a reach at times but that was really only in the beginning when I was adjusting to the more sporty ergos compared to the FZ-09. Knees and hips feel absolutely great after riding 8 hours and covering 200+ miles. The FZ-09 wins on pure comfort day to day but if you ride in a sporting manner the 765 ergos just make more sense. If I had to make one complaint, the turning radius sucks on the 765. Thought about the GSX-S but never went to look at them, they look OK but I didn't feel the package was as complete as the 765 RS. I didn't want to have to mod it other than a fender eliminator. The three bikes in contention, but never ridden were; FZ-10, Tuono (waaay out of budget) or a use S1000r. The SDR sounds like an incredible bike, and like the Tuono for me was so far out of budget I did not want to tempt myself by riding one. I do plan on trying a Tuono at some point, but only when I can pull the trigger.

Yeah I'm 6-2 and 34 inseam, a decent piece bigger bodied. I've sat on the last-gen ST675R and found it pretty aggressive as you say, similar to a Duc Streetfighter 848 I tried once. I'm currently trying out the ADV world and have found several things to be disappointing to me (and a few things quite good), such as the heaviness of the bike, the terrible wind noise (have tried aftermarket windscreens already), and the lack of power to weight ratio (even though it's not a slouch, it's just off what I'm used to). The biggest thing has been the terrible wind noise/vibration/buffeting/hammering fatigue on even somewhat windy days coming off the front. I know why it does that, but there's little that can be done. It's a V-Strom 1000XT. The XSR900 has better components from factory than the MT/FZ brother, but it is a little messy in design: tank and frame gaps are pretty terrible (don't match or follow profile), tank scallops aren't even at the normal leg angles, electrical kept in large scabby blocks protruding from the frame behind the forks, headlight bucket is too small in diameter and too long, tank too small (same as MT/FZ), and tail light just doesn't belong. The idea is appealing but the execution was rushed and messy.

Have you thought about giving the FJ-09 a try? One of those with a few suspension tweaks would be quite fun especially if you are taller. They do not ride like a big touring bike. The XSR is a cool bike and indeed it got more premium parts but the design choices were funky.

Yes I have taken FJ-09 on demo. The fairings and windscreen were so badly designed, at a mere 40 mph on a still day, it sounds like hammers thumping all over one's helmet. I have considered it. Yet, waiting on the Tracer 900/GT models as they have been completely overhauled. Don't yet know the USA prices as Yamaha hasn't published them yet. The UK website says the GT model is around 470 pounds (getting more heavy than I like).

I'm going to tell you what my wife told me. If you can keep the SM, do it. That is the one bike I regret selling. With that said, the SM is a tough bike to own as your only bike if you are in a big city and need to be on the highway often. The Street Triple and the DRZ400SM are tied as my two favorite bikes.

Thanks. It’s a tough choice for sure. I would love to have both and can probably make it work, but a DRZ sale would really help make the Street a more reasonable purchase. I ride about 5 to 6k miles a season (no riding in NY winters), and my commute is mostly twisty backroads with 40 to 55mph speed limits. The DRZ has handled it really well, but it seems like too many miles for a single. It’s such a great little versatile bike, but I have always loved the striple and am ready for an upgrade. Just don’t want to look back and miss having the SM to play with.

@@motardmike6383 I totally get it. That's why I ultimately sold my DRZ, made the new bike a little more approachable. With that type of commute I wouldn't worry about the DRZ, I put over 20,000 miles on mine without any issues. It reliably burned 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles too. With that said, I totally get it. I sold mine because I was ready for a bigger bike again. Having the extra power makes some parts of the commute much easier and less engine vibrations was a huge bonus. For me the biggest gain was the electronic aids, especially ABS. They have saved my hide a number of times on the street.

Each bike offers a very different experience, the Speed Triple S is great but not my cup of tea. The Street Triple is lighter, more nimble and has a tractable powerband. In the US, the Speed Triple S starts at $13,5000 whereas the top spec Street Triple RS is $12,500.

I just got a 2013 triumph Street triple S, with only 1800 miles on her. It's only 05:30 and I've been up since 04 30, too excited to sleep I'm going to pick it up in just a little while. It's my first road bike I have been riding dirt most my life. I'm not sure what kind of changes if any I will make on my bike but a exhaust will probably be the first thing because my bike is completely stock. you'll more than likely find the mirrors that come stock on the RS to be subpar after say 40 mph. They just vibrate way too much and unfortunately i am not the only person to say this. To each his own, i suppose, but i ended up swappin those puppies out with CRG lanesplitters... cleans up the view a bit too. i couldnt imagine having those bunny ears the R and S come with lol...

Great review until you spoke about the clipper clutch 😅 the slipper clutch has absolutely nothing to do with pulling away. It’s there to reduce the effects of engine braking in deceleration, in other words stop the rear wheel locking up when you shut the throttle at high RPM. Maybe you meant it’s a super light clutch lever action and that takes some getting used to 👍🏻

So I am 21 now and i can get the A licence in EU. I want a bike that a can grow on like this has modes different power modes. Do you consider the lowest power mode starter friendly? Like when you accedently pull it it a little doesnt take of like a jet.

I am not familiar with the licensing structure in the EU, but assuming you've had experience on other bikes I don't think this would be too much. You need to respect it like any motorcycle and understand it can take you to out of control speeds VERY fast. In America it pains me to think someone could START with this having never ridden in their life.

I wouldn't consider the throttle to be abrupt on the 765 RS unless you were riding in Sport or Track mode. For fly by wire it is very smooth in my experience.

Wow! I've seen a few reports from the long term press bikes that they've burned up a few headlight bulbs. What is the build date on yours? Mine is 5/17 and hasn't burned a set yet.

The Driver's Perspective I will have to find the original bulbs. I put in the set of Silverstar bulbs just to see if the same thing will happen and again like before the right headlight went out. After burning for bulbs I have now had no problems for the last 700 miles. Other than the headlight problem with the bike has been absolutely incredible.

I have ridden the 675 and I was close to buying one before I got my FZ-09...until I rode it. I may have test rode a poor example, but the 08 STR I rode was uninspiring coming from my Supermoto. It did not have the low end grunt that I was expecting and the engine delivery felt too much like a 600cc supersport. The 765 is far better for my riding style and expectations. It is not quiet as punchy as the FZ-09's engine down low but I feel it strikes a nice balance of mid-range and top and rush.

Up until that moment I had no idea there was such thing as a 765. So I stand corrected! I have had my eye on a Speed triple for years but always wanted something a little lighter, more nimble. The 675 has the handling but i like low end torque. My riding style is I like to ride the front and keep up my momentum. Corner entry is the fun part for me ( I go through 2 fronts for every 1 rear). WIth good torque out and good approach speed you can go fast without sounding like you are going fast. Keeps you below the radar and still have a blast and still run with the big boys. That 765 is right in the sweet spot (although 865 would probably be even better) Love that triple sound.

I'm getting about 100-120 miles before the gas light comes on, less than 3 gallons to fill it up at this point. Tank is supposedly 4.6 gallons, I suspect range would be 150-200+ miles depending on riding habits. Pure freeway this thing sips on gas.

I'd take the Street Triple every single time over the R6 unless I was buying a track only race bike. The Triumph has more mid-range power and more comfortable ergonomics for every day use. The novelty of riding a race replica on the street wears off quick in my experience. Best thing to do is ride both and see what works best for you. Coming from the torquey FZ-07 I'd wager the R6 will be a bit disappointing for you.

How big are you? I demo'd the R6 and it's a extremely focused, extremely serious racetrack bike, needing lots of revs to move out and has extreme ergonomics. I'm 6-2 and after 20 minutes I was ready to get off. Felt like I was gripping the front axle and my butt felt higher than the windshield.
