2018 Yamaha Star Eluder Review

So what do you do if you want a Street Glide, without the Harley. Well, your search is over, Yamaha has come up with an answer. They took the Venture and turned it into a Bagger by sending it to Action Hero school, sprinkling in some black accents and Chuck Norris beard hairs, and the result is the 2018 Star Eluder. Prices start at $22,500, which is smack dab in Street Glide territory. Packing 126 pound-feet of torque from the beefy 113 cubic inch, 1854cc V Twin engine giving you traditional v twin grunt and, thanks to a reworked 6 speed transmission, velvety smooth power delivery. While it is certainly low-revving, and is a big boy at 875 lbs, it doesnt feel like a slouch at all. The Eluder is a bruiser, mean and lean, with dashing good looks and an exhaust note to match. With several creature comforts like a 7inch LCD info-tainment center, 19 gallons of storage, and a comfy seat, you'll be tearing down I-95 to Bike Week in style. The Eluder uses a key fob, and turning the bike is a challenge for riders who are new to key fobs, as you can see here.

I want this Bike. My Yamaha Warrior is a great city bike, and even short half day trips here and there, but it's a 5 Speed. This bike has everything that a Road Glide has, but for much less money. Stock base Road Glide, with a smaller engine, is more money, and for some reason LESS chrome is MORE MONEY. Want to change something on the HD to make it fit you better? Better shell out a few hundred bucks or more for small things, because if anybody but a HD certified tech touches it, there goes your warranty. I love the Road Glide, it is my dream bike. The idiots at HD are charging WAY too much money, for not nearly enough bike. I love all the HD fanboys out there, acting like spending more = better. My Warrior will walk the walk with any Harley, and it won't leave me stranded or destitute if something breaks.

Nice but I think they should add option for a taller windshield and make it electric of course

BTW I own an Eluder and that flashing light on the dash was annoying as hell. I even took it to the dealer to ask them what it was and they had to call Yamaha. It does in fact relate to the key fob and its distance from the receiver. I was advised that I needed to keep it in my pockets since the receiver is located underneath the seat.
@avatarquinn

Dude! You can see where the guy puts the keyfob at the beginning of the video! Right there in that cubby by the dash!
@pflanagan1
@pflanagan1 5 лет назад
Yep! Thats exactly where I put mine when I first started riding it. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what that light was but I knew I was about to go on a 4k mile trip so wanted to make sure nothing serious. At first, the dealer told me it was the "starter" battery used in the key fob. So I bought another battery and problem still persisted. Finally they had to call Yamaha to find out what it meant.

Just like a car the key fob has to be with you if you ever shut it off it will not start back up because the key fob is too far away. I keep mine in my pocket when I am on my Harley

Fob light key goes in right pocket or right storage not left side. The antenna is on the right side it's made that way so fob has to be close.

It pisses me off that Yamaha only made this for one year, then bailed on their large v twin bikes all together.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I own a 2007 Yamaha Royal Star tour deluxe and I would consider one of these as my RSTD has gotten up there in mileage.

As for the heat issue coming from the engine... I rode mine from Texas to Virginia and back. During the trip east, the heat coming off the left side below my left thigh ended up giving me second degree burns through my jeans and required a doctor to treat. Yamaha will not acknowledge there is a heat issue so I am stuck with a $26k bike that I cannot ride in the heat. Please use this as a PSA and warning.

Patrick, is there any fix for this problem? Any after-market heat shields or such? I just bought the Star Venture and am hoping to ride from TX to Massachusetts.
@pflanagan1
@pflanagan1 5 лет назад
@@drodrigues24x56rv1 Yamaha's answer was to add the wind deflectors but that only works when the bike is moving. Good news is that not everyone seems to have this drastic of an issue as me. So I'm the lucky one.

I was told that if you duct tape raw chickens to your inner thighs, by the end of the day you'll have a nice cooked dinner ready. Will barbeque sauce fit in that dash cubby?

This is a concern for me. I think I will hold off on buying one until Yamaha takes the appropriate actions to mitigate. There is no reason there should be any heat related issues for athe amount of cash that is being spent on these machines. Thanks for your input.

This bike is similar to the Harley Road Glide not Street Glide...
@avatarquinn
@avatarquinn 5 лет назад
The Yamaha rep there that day said it compares to both really the Street and Road Glides. I've ridden a Road Glide, and this isn't even close. It needs to be $5,000 cheaper, more comfortable, and lose the complicated starting key fob sequence. IMHO.

Can someone explain to me why this motorcycle listed at $24K back in 2018 and now 2 tears later and all Yamaha dealers still have them in stock and can't get rid of them at $15,000 ? What is the issue here ? Did Yamaha screw up on the pricing or was this all hype about the new Venture / Eluder models. What was Yamaha thinking when they ended production of the Roadstar/ Roadliner and Stratoliner lineup ?

Sadly, it looks like the lives of Eluder and SVTC have been cut short. Numerous actual Owners of the 2018 SVTC/Eluder models have been pressing Yamaha concerning the question of why no 2019 models are being offered (out of obvious concern). Yamaha has officially responded to those inquiries with letters stating that due to poor sales, no 2019's will be made and the future beyond 19 of the models will remain questionable based on whether or not the left over inventory of 2018's sell during the 2019 riding season. They have also been told that even if the model does go back to production it will be strickly done by a new "Yamaha Pre-Order System" and no bikes will be shipped to fill dealership floor space.

2020's are coming now and I spoke to a dealer a week ago. They said they will be bringing in about 5 Ventures next May here in Canada. So maybe Yamaha has addressed the concerns.

The key fob is a little weird at first as I have one on my Harley Electra Glide but you get used to it. I have heard about the heat problems and that scared me away from the transcontinental venture. The one you are riding sure looks nice

Dude Goldwings are amazing. They are super comfy, super smooth, and surprisingly agile for their size. With plenty of power and standard equipment, they make very good long distance cruisers. Have you test rode a new Harley? They really dont vibrate anymore.

@@avatarquinn I appreciate the reply. No I have not to be fair: my Electra glide was an 08. I suppose I should test drive a newer one before I make my decision. I do love the road glides. Any year you’d recommend? I can’t go brand new.

Road Glide /Street Glide not so sure about it.... I feel like both bikes are too small and cramped for me. The Eluder and Venture are just a few inches short of my Yamaha Raider which is a perfect fit for me. My Raider is an awesome bike. The Venture and Eluder share the same proven reliable 113 engine so I am sold on either provided I don't feel cramped on them.
@avatarquinn

The problem is the price. Riding the Harleys everything you touch feels well made and the bike just feels better going down the road. This bike didnt have that high end feel to justify the high end price.

The Harleys do seem to be stepping it up, in the comfort and power departments, everything seems to be cooler running than my Indian. Id love to go back to Yamaha but I don't know about the limited production, aftermarket parts and that engine heat... I wonder if they will surprise us in the next year or so..
