Bill Birns was my English teacher at Margaretville Central and I played soccer with his son. Great teacher, and decent goalie! Great to hear him lecture again.
The "German Catskills" as I know them are in Round Top NY near Cairo. My Grandparents spent weeks up at the "Ravine Farm House" near East Durham, which is now the "K&K Equestrian Center at Ravine Farm". They had plays and even a Masquerade Ball.. It was in the years around 1949.
