A talk given in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the opening of the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY. Dr. Matt Pritchard, Cornell University geologist, discusses the new publication, Gorges History: Landscapes and Geology of the Finger Lakes Region, by Dr. Arthur Bloom, and reviews some of the interesting glacier-related formations in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

I'd love to buy the book but can't find it! I subscribed a while ago. THANKS for such a great video! UPDATE: I did find it - on Amazon. I ordered it. I grew up in Cdga, and LOVE the gorges! I moved away for 40 years, and am back living in Rochester, and now want to understand the geologic history of these features!

Thanks for uploading this! It was a good overview of the region. I'm just an enthusiast, with much to be learned, so I hope to make it up to your museum sometime.

I happened to attend this presentation and I’m glad to see it’s online. It’s a good book that anyone interested in the region’s geology would enjoy. I remember when Art was working on his manuscript and I was so glad to see that his final work, his intended update on von Engeln’s 1961 book, was brought to print, even though Art did not survive to see it.

So in this presentation of the finger lakes ,dd anyone discuss how deep seneca lake is ?and if the submarine station is there for what reason ? Did they discuss how subs can get out to the ocean ? Did they say any of the lakes inter connect underneath ! Caverns that go from one lake to another ?

The finger lakes region, it's origin and nature has been like my Bible for gold prospecting in the finger lakes area. I've read it many times over. Glaciation is one of my most favored topics.

I have wondered how it would be to look for gold in the streams around finger lakes ? Tempest ranch camp !

Matt, nice presentation! I'm a geologist with a question, I was taught that many of the 2 or 3 fracture orientations were caused from basin loading/ unloading over time in conjunction with tectonics to the east? Can you comment

Question: if glaciers carved the former river beds to form the finger lakes, did they carve them out more than the surrounding bedrock? why? was the rock in the river beds more prone to erosion?

Was waiting for homeboy to mention Letchworth! Me and my buddies found this spot where the bedrock is naturally a square ish hole like a hot tub where you can sit and drink beer as the water flows over your balls. Gotta watch out for those leeches tho. But isn’t that life? 585, baby. Onwards

Research the Younger Dryas Impacts... Uniformitarianism is a poor assumption...

No one can prove that the supposed geologic column and its supposed ages are good models for reality. I would love to see these "scientists" just discuss what can actually be found within the local geology and be humble enough to admit that any references to the distant past are guesses based on an unproveable evolutionary worldview and on unproveable assumptions that deal with radiometric dating. Geologists already have a tough time trying to convince people that they are real scientists and not on the same level as psychologists.

I hope you really know that that's sour-grapes & bs. Doesn't align with creationist nonsense, so it triggered you? Bye, Felix.

@@jacquesblaque7728 First of all, I never mentioned "creationist" studies. However, what creationist research and evolutionist research both have in common is that they are not operational science. Both are studying supposed events in the past that are lacking evidence that is testable and repeatable. Uniformitarianism is a blind faith assumption that in no way can be proven. The sour grapes ad hominem is puzzling because nowhere did I express that soy boy sentiment. Perhaps you often experience that yourself and are projecting.

@@garyb6219 LOL. There are MANY things that can be proven in the Bible using criteria set forth for analyzing historical writings. Btw, PROVE there was a Socrates or a Krishna or a Buddha or a Muhammad. You can't and neither can anyone else but one can easily prove that Jesus existed and that the resurrection was a fact of history. You obviously never read the Bible or studied the archaeological findings, the corroborating ancient writings by others, and so forth. I used to be an atheist and it was FACTS that finally got me thinking that the Bible may be true and then more facts that convinced me. Then there is "the impossibility of the contrary". Btw, there are HUGE problems with radiometric dating and there are unproven assumptions involved. In fact, there are at least 17 presuppositions that must be held as true by anyone doing science but which can not be proven to be true by the scientific method. Even though I was a science major in college I am fond of saying: ONE CAN DO PHILOSOPHY WITHOUT SCIENCE BUT ONE CANNOT DO SCIENCE WITHOUT PHILOSOPHY Now go and figure out why...
