Not so much a great moment, but, for people who want to listen to this while watching the Sky Sports RU-vid video of Stokes and Leach's partnership, 0:00 on the Sky video is 2:10:25 on this
This is life. No matter what downfalls you may have seen, the heartbreaks, betrayals, failures & losses. You will eventually find your Ben Stokes. Keep your chin up.
I had the privilege (or good luck) to be at Headingley that day, so didn't hear the commentary live. Then I drove to Suffolk that evening listening to the recording via BBC Sounds all the way there. It made a long drive pass quickly, prolonging the ecstasy of the afternoon. Extraordinary.
How evocative, I can’t imagine what it would have been like to be in the crowd that day. Every time I’ve listened since, the ecstasy’s been the same...and so has the tension and anxiety over wondering ‘if’. Despite, somehow, knowing the result! I suspect we’ll all remember where we were during that innings.
It's brilliant to be able to hear Vaughan just totally defeated after the Broad wicket, talking about the three solitary times the 1st innings sub-70 score has won a game, and how the history of cricket totally defied an English win, but still being able to hear the faintest of hopes in his voice amongst the despair and for it to actually happen an hour later. Such an amazing cricket summer
For anyone who wants the TMS commentary with the sky sports visuals on RU-vid of Stokes and Leach's partnership, 0:00 on the Sky video is 2:10:25 on this video
The Aussie commentator is wrong. The hawk eye produced was wrong, it hit the pad twice. The second one depicts it being out. It was actually a very good decision
Am a Liverpool fan and i was at istanbul in 2005 to witness the grratest win from the depths of despair when all hope was gone and this was the cricket version of istanbul, stokes achieved the impossible on this day, it set a tone not just in sport but in life in general, meaning never to give up when life is beating you, positive thinking and stick at it and you will succeed, both istanbul and headingley proved that and it gave hope to all depressed people all over the world !
Listening back to this whole thing is amazing. The drama of the final passages of play is incredible: Aggers comes back on to commentary for his final stint, Stokes makes his hundred and then the madness begins. I've watched the footage with the Sky commentary many times as well but this TMS commentary is just incredible.
Thanks for uploading this. I'm driving my truck on my night shift listening to historic commentary on one of the greatest sporting events of all time, it's really making my night go so much better 😁. What an extraordinary player Ben Stokes is 🤯👏👏👏👏
I listened to TMS the whole weekend but when England lost their ninth wicket on the Sunday I went to the garden thinking it was all over. Couldn't resist putting TMS on. Then this happened. I love cricket.
Along with the World Cup final 2019 some of the best cricket and commentary ever, completely captivating, couldn't take my eyes off it as the tension slowly built as the finish got closer and closer.
Thank you so much for uploading. I will definitely listen to this at least once a month for the rest of my life! Happy memories of a special remarkable day.
One hour in twenty four, three times a week, I try to listen to this 2.00 until 3.10. The last wicket partnership. Preparing lunch, eating, then sitting with a cup of tea to the last few overs. The cricket brilliant, the commentary a masterpiece. So glad I found it after the podcast at the time was taken down five days after the final day. Doctors should prescribe this instead of anti depression tablets. 2019 one of the bet summers ever.
I was looking for this commentary earlier and was sooo chuffed to find it. This is the greatest test match of the modern era. Ben Stokes!! The world is upside down at the moment and listening to this is a real boost.
2 Months later I have lived on Australia v England Semi Final ....This!!!! World Cup Final 2019 was just a bit better than 2020. My ticket for England v Australia useless.
Aggers is a master of his craft - who heard his interview with Waleed (the boy who got shot several times and survived) - incredible journalism. Aggers is a national treasure!
It will be so good when we can get back to having crowds at sporting events again. The crowd that day were a huge part of the drama and excitement and probably helped Stokes and Leach get us over the line.
Thanks very much for uploading this very precious commentary. I was on a train in Switzerland at the time and kept losing reception due to the numerous tunnels.
Sounds familiar! I was walking in the lakes with sketchy reception. Just regained some signal before Stokes hit the winning runs. Great memories, will never forget it.
I was there! Amazing atmosphere just like the World Cup Final. Was staying at the same hotel as the Australian team as well (Marriott in Leeds city centre). Unbelievable weekend.
Great to hear this again. I was travelling from London to Cardiff by bus while it was going on, the trip was 4 hours and when the winning runs were scored I literally jumped for joy in the middle of Cardiff City centre!
Thank you so much for uploading this. It's the best moment of sporting excellence and pure joy I have ever experienced. Absolutely incredible innings. What a man Ben Stokes is. Phenomenal.
I still get goosebumps over Stokes innings, I was driving back home to fort william from stafford had to stop at loch lomond to listen to final couple of overs, got some really funny looks as i sat in car windows down yelling my head off.
2:59:57 Aggers: "It's been given not out...they are going to review it - but with absolutely no confidence what-so-ever that this is actually out...this says a lot about how the Aussies are feeling" Pigeon: "Would you review it?" Aggers: "Yes." 🤣🤣
Goosebumps everytime, dont care what nationality you are if this doesn't set the pulses racing then sport is not for you, one of the greatest ever days in the history of sport, probably when am old and grey and lying on my death bed with memory diminishing, this will be one of the things that I finally remember.
All this time later and I'm sitting in the sun, day after an operation and liste ing to the si gle greatest day in the history of test cricket. Still can't believe what happened!
Here in the USA and, for obvious reasons it’s pretty dire, but listening to the best day of cricket ever and it is such a morale booster! Thank you everyone!
Think Stokes is beginning to realise that this innings was far better than the WCF. Hey dood........258, WCF, 135*. Three of the greatest 20 innings in English Cricket history
i miss those days up in the mid-Himalayas with no live telecast on tv..i used to listen to radio commentary....radio makes cricket more exciting at least for me..now I can just watch it on my phone but it's not the same it used to be..and i dont know why at 6am 3 deg temp i feel like going out and play..
As Ben Stokes hits fours and sixes all around the ground, Sir Alastair Cook tries to keep a low profile because standing next to him, Glen McGrath is getting a tad upset!
3:25:07 is a bit of an interesting subplot because they had fallen out the previous night when Aggers let his mouth run away with him & pissed off Root at the end of play
I'm an aussie and Stokes was absolutely unbelievable but let me tell you Poms that every Australian was tempted to smash their TV when that LBW was given not out. The English commentators spent about 3 seconds talking about one of the worst umpiring decisions in the history of the game
I mean Tim Paine's review for 1 that pitched so far outside leg its untrue wasn't great, nor was Lyon's fumble for the run out. As for the commentators, there was something happening every ball at the time. And they were watching their boy bat the innings of his life
Edgbaston the more impressive victory imo simply due to both sides being far better in 3005.having said that. Thile performance from stokes (including his mammoth bowling spell) is simply the best feat I have ever seen on a cricket field
Well Denley and Roy aren’t in the test team anymore and Root is batting at number 4. We have 2 fast bowlers not fast-medium and Buttler looks to finally be a test match player. It certainly looks a bit more optimistic for the ashes down under this winter. Obviously we’ll have to see how we get on against India first.
Now the questions are being asked about Australian cricket and what’s going on behind the scenes after their defeat at home to India’s reserves. I have to admit that apart from Warner, Smith, Labushagne and maybe Green and Pucovski, their batting looks ordinary to say the least. I don’t mind that as an English cricket fan!! Seriously though it’s been like that for a while now and Australia don’t seem able to sort it out.
