Black panther, the "this is a solid movie but doesn't really deserve an Oscar, but we're kinda racist and want to put out some token like we're not so.....yeah" pick
gamephreak5 chill out white boy, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Although worst film? Really? Have you not seen Thor 1 and 2? Those are objectively the worst.
If Black Panther wins (which most likely will not) I cannot wait to hear his cry of agony. And his next video about reviewing the Oscars Show for the very first time like a movie.
0:45 - A Star Is Born 2:39 - Black K Klansman 3:15 - Black Panther 5:38 - Bohemian Rhapsody 7:54 - Green Book 9:18 - Roma 10:06 - The Favourite 10:54 - Vice You're welcome Adam! :D
Tbh I was fine with Green Book winning. I thought it was better than BlacKKKlansman, Black Panther, and Bohemian Rhapsody and I enjoyed it more than The Favorite
I watched the favorite and the green book in the same day. and while I thought the favorite had genuinely great writing acting sets and directing(minus the weird fisheye lens that totally broke my immersion) I just enjoyed the green book more. I thought it oozed the 60s era that they were going for and the two leads were absolutely amazing(I thought the majority of the cast was perfect for their roles) and while it was predictable I think I loved it for the exact reason that Adam mentioned about "people who enjoy feel good movies". like Adam said, movies are escapism and it was the most enjoyable and heartwarming film I watched all year, and having seen all the best picture nominees this year I think it totally deserved the win.
How can they nominate Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody but not First Reformed or Hereditary? It’s obvious they only nominated those movies to get people to watch their boring award show.
Horror movies get snubbed a lot in awards shows, especially if they involve children. I'll never understand how Coraline didn't win the Oscar, but it was also definitely a horror film.
A late response to an old comment, but... I have no idea. In order to win Best Picture, you have to win either Best Director or one of the two Screenplay Oscars. So that begs the question, why the heck were Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther specifically nominated for Best Picture when neither of them were nominated in those other categories? I like Black Panther, but why was it nominated for Best Picture in this case? First Reformed got an Original Screenplay nom, they definitely could have nominated that instead. Plus Cold War, since it got a Best Director nom. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Can You Ever Forgive Me were all nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay as well, so I'm confused as to why none of those were nominated either (although I would have to disagree with Can You Ever Forgive Me getting nominated for Best Picture). You could have made room for at least two of these, maybe even three of them, instead of nominating Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther. Vice and Green Book would still be nominated though, sadly, since both got undeserved Best Screenplay noms, and Vice got an undeserved Director nom too. That being said, Hereditary wasn't nominated for anything, so obviously it wasn't gonna be nominated for Best Picture. Toni Collette definitely should have been nominated for Best Actress though, that snub was a travesty. Though I'm not surprised, the Academy hates horror movies.
@AssasinArsenal47 honestly, i'm all against giving suicide squad any price at all but for example harley quinn's costume in suicide squad is fucking iconic
Suicide squad's make up is kinda justified simply by looking at killer croc, but Black Panther for best picture is totally a joke. BP's nomination for costume was justified though.
@@Jun-bm8ly Just no. goo.gl/images/z9nMNt ^THIS is star trek beyond make up. These are not cgi, these are actual make up. And much of the movie was not shrouded in darkness. There is no way Suicide Squad's win is justified for ONE, I repeat ONE character's above average make up and especially when the entirety of Suicide Squad was shrouded in darkness making seeing killer croc's make up a pain in the eyes
First Man. Hereditary. Blindspotting. If Beale Street Could Talk. Leave No Trace. First Reformed. You Were Never Really Here. These are just the films off the top of my head that are more deserving of a Best Picture nom.
@Russell Hunter You Were Never Really Here won best screenplay and actor at the Cannes film festival. Joaquin Phoenix sure deserves an Oscar but the Academy hates him for speaking out against them.
"Finally a movie for black people that's not about slavery or poverty!" ** movie has thick racial messages and themes of systemic racism and also shows literal black poverty ** "We finally did it!"
"movie has thick racial messages and themes of systemic racism and also shows literal black poverty" No. Black Panther is an insult to Blacks already from the name which defines them as beings closer to animals (and before you say anything, yes the Black Panther party is guilty of this as well no matter how left-wing it is). Wakanda is a place straight out of a racist European colonial guidebook and as if that wasn't enough it portrays the freaking CIA, the organisation responsible for some of the worst atrocities in post-colonial Africa as well as against US Blacks too, positively. Seriously, get your White liberal mentality out of here.
@@liamryan7239 Did you even read the rest of my comment? I love how you only focus on the simplest of things. You don't address how Black Panther is a movie that looks like the reenactment of an European colonial guidebook or that it defends the CIA's imperialism. "Or maybe it’s based on a comic book?" Yes, a disgustingly racist comic book. "Sorry I didn’t overly enjoy black panther either but I think your comment is a tad ridiculous" Better say why it is "a tad ridiculous". If it's only because it is entertainment, then let me remind you that this movie is being taken extremely seriously and promoted as intellectual debate and actual education, on top of making over 1 billion dollars which is extremely worrisome. "Also “Spider-Man” is a sexist title because it acts like men are closer to spiders See how stupid that is? " If you have no understanding of what I'm saying, you should not be mocking me in the first place since it really makes you look ignorant. You completely missed the point which is that the name "Black Panther" relates Africans to the colonial tradition of dehumanising them with wild jungle animals and the colour black. It's in the same category of blackface and "ooga booga" yelling natives. Meanwhile, merely using the term "man" and applying it to a fictional character has nothing sexist in it. Both are so incomparable that, again, the counter-example only makes you look ignorant to say the least.
Quq Balam If Black Panther is racist then how come in the movie (and comic book) most black characters are treated as very good characters so long as they aren’t the villain. Also if Wakanda isn’t a real place than why should we assume that worlds CIA is the same? Black Panther is a name now associated with a bad ass super hero who many now look up to buy you still find a way to be upset.
What I love is how media praises it so much, despite it being painfully mediocre, just because it has black people in it. They call Killmonger the best MCU villain, when his plan is to create a sort of commie society though distributing super advanced guns only to black people so they can sort of enslave the whites. Also the fact that the movie won an award and an oscar nomination for BEAT VISUAL EFFECTS is downright insulting. The vfx are consistently mediocre and the final battle legit looks like a cutscene from a ps2 game. The plot is predictable even by marvel standards and the acting which has been praised so much is just ok. Honestly it doenst even make my top 10 mcu movies list
@@iliaschaikalis8579 "They call Killmonger the best MCU villain, when his plan is to create a sort of commie society though distributing super advanced guns only to black people so they can sort of enslave the whites." The part of creating a Communist society through armed struggle isn't bad in and on in itself, and it's a good thing. In fact, that's the point of the film, to present African anti-colonialism which was always dominated by socialists especially of the Communist kind, as anti-White genocide by Blacks, when this is a hilariously stupid caricature that only justifies colonialism and imperialsim in Africa (and the rest of the world). The movie agrees with you in this regard, and that's part of the reason why it is so awful. Anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism is not the same as anti-White genocide, especially when the dominant African parties at least during the Cold War prior to the neoliberal reaction were predominantly Marxist, following a man who was German.
I'm glad other people are thinking this. How many of these formulaic kid's movies are they gonna make? Gotta love the MCU though. Thor, who couldn't act thirsty if he was in the desert for a week. A girl with a 9mm and a dude with a bow and arrow basically hold their own with a Hyper-Advanced Cyborg, a God (albeit one who can't act), a giant, and a super-soldier. That lame "adjustment period" in every film when the hero is clumsy with his or her powers to (supposedly) humorous effect. Uh oh, Dr. Strange's "hand magic" flickers like a light with a bad filament! ZING! Ironman doesn't calibrate his weapons and goes flying back and hits his head! ZING! Thor doesn't understand that breaking coffee cups is bad! ZING! etc. And Wakanda? The most technologically advanced society on Earth...still has ritual scarification, an absolute monarchy, ascension by combat, and bodyguards with spears. Gee, what a lovely society. What was Killmonger's line? Something like "Bury me in the Sea with my ancestors that jumped from ships because they knew death was better than slavery." Whatever the exact line was, I'm thinking "Wait, if they jumped from the slave ships, then they cannot be your ancestors. Not to mention, being Wakandan, a land that was supposedly never colonized meaning that Wakandan slaves would be even more unlikely. Anyway, just a handful of the thousands of absurdities in the many MCU films. I understand the vitriol that the DCU films, but the internet jumps up the ass of anyone who doesn't dare laugh at Starlord's "Dance off, me and you." line.
Hollyweird is threatened by Mr. Rogers because he didn't market dolls or neighborhood playsets, wasn't on a network or cable channel and didn't advance a political viewpoint.
I'm sorry but I disagree. I hate it when people say that. It's a Marvel movie that you can watch without any prior MCU knowledge and it has one of, if not, the best villain of the MCU.
The Dark Master The Dark Master I loved Black Panther because of the movie, I honestly could not care less about the “cultural significance” or whatever. I don’t know if I agree that it deserves a best picture nomination but I am happy that it did
jack watkins I understand opinions are opinions man but Killmongers plan wasn’t to enslave people, it was to send vibration weapons to oppressed people so they can rise up and kill those in power. I personally don’t think the backstory was rushed but that’s your opinion. But he does make a great point that affects T’Challa morally which is that Wakanda had ability to help people during war or slave trades and they did nothing. As for the MCU thing, they show how his dad died, they explain Klaues back story, and I guess the unrelating MCU references can be difficult to understand without any background knowledge but they’re so brief
@@royalblue5367 Dariusburst(AX EX CS) should be up there too. If anyone wanted to battle robotic fishes. But hey Mario 64 has better fish Al than COD:Ghosts.
It's still comparable to the ratings The Game Awards gets, event though that's free online. If you could stream the Oscars it would probably do a lot better.
@@jimbogreen7029 I feel like when it comes to the game awards most people watch it through unaffiliated streams like when a streamer you like streams it and gives commentary over it. At least that's how I always watched it.
I hope Black Panther wins costume design as I like to focus on positives for films I otherwise have no interest in. It’s a bizarre nomination but the costumes were eye catching.
Excuse me what the fuck? Black panther had like, five non-cgi stunts. MI literally took the bar for what impeccable stunt-work means and raised it to the fucking heliosphere. Black panther may have won another year, but compared to MI6, it did absolutely nothing. It was average for a blockbuster (at best) while mission impossible had some of the most impressive feats of stuntwork that cinema has ever seen.
How in the world did CHIPS get snubbed? Or even worse, Sleepless? These are two of the greatest films of all time and they don't get nominated? What a rip!
I thought "Sorry to Bother You" had kind of an uneven screenplay - the last half felt rushed, a couple plot lines were dropped (his girlfriend gets back together with him for no reason??), and the final reveal was super predictable imo, like the end of a mid-tier Twilight Zone episode That said, it's still 1000 times better and more interesting than Green Book, Vice, and Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd much rather see a ballsy, interesting, genuinely original film like Sorry to Bother You get nominated (even if it's flawed), than a biopic with the same story as 100s of other biopics.
The fact that Black Panther gets a Best Picture Nomination but The Dark Knight and Logan, far superior Superhero-Movies, never got one shows how completely out of touch The Academy is and why nobody take it seriously anymore.
The dark knight was literally one of the main reasons the Oscars expended the number of movies that can be nominated for BP, and it definitely would’ve been nominated if there were 10 places. Logan was good but not best picture worthy all.
Mario M when looking at it with proper context it really doesn’t. Logan came out in 2017, which had much better critically acclaimed movies that were loved by audiences, and it just didn’t make the cut. It’s not a good replacement for black panther because it didn’t come out this year, 2018, which had in my opinion a much more disappointing selection of best picture possibilities
Yoav Erez what I meant is that Logan is a movie with better quality and at least it could’ve been considered even though it wouldn’t have make it for BP while black panther on the other hand doesn’t even deserves to be an option for BP. No matter what movies it is competing against.
The Dark Knight was 10 years ago, when no one expected superhero films to be taken seriously (Except for Raimi's Spider-Man but that trilogy fucked up in the end), it was thanks to Nolan that people started seeing superhero films with higher standards, and last year's Logan helped getting superhero films more consideration in award ceremonies. Even do it was a mistake, Black Panther owes it's nominations to both films.
The villain is a purple space man. Were else did you see purple space men? No where, because everyone else is too much of a racist towards purple space men! ;- )
Having only recently seen both movies, Black Panther was definitely better. Infinity War was too much of a sequel to be judged on its own. Like, if you didn't watch all the MCU movies on the past year, good luck trying to understand every reference they make. At this point it's like watching four episodes of Game of Thrones or Walking Dead a year. Black Panther was a standalone movie with better music and was more focused.
Calling it right now, Black Panther loses Best Picture and the world loses their minds and calls out the Oscars. Or it actually wins and people will wake up and realize that it was a award given out on pity.
vinnythewebsurfer Don't get me wrong. Green Book is a fine film, but its nothing unique and it's just a film about two different men spend the conversation in road trip while talking about racism is very prejudice and it's more akin of ”Driving Miss Daisy.” It's more influence like ”Driving Miss Daisy” with a color person has to drive the car and the other one is very different and being too distinct from what they're colliding or evolving. It's been done so many times and who's going to remember about a stereotypical Italian driver who eats tons of pizza in a carbon pizza boxes and they misunderstood every single scene that we know that this dude did not obeys or what they're facing so many problems. Yay, I get the true story of they're telling, but it's nothing that too deep and it needs to have a better original. Roma is a perfect film that blends the society living in a 70’s Mexico town along with a hardworking housekeeper of seeing things like a protest, having a pregnancy until things turn out to be worst, living with a struggling family along a with a depressed housewife, and everything looks brand new with a good cinematography, good characters, new story, and emotional scenes that I felt with a maid who sacrifices her entire life. Too much to ask? No? Thinking that should've won better? Yay! I don't consider this cookie cutter cliche film because of its tiring.
One of the most forgettable best picture wins ever as well. I seriously forget every time that it won best picture whenever I rewatch Adum & Pals' commentary on the awards ceremony.
The scene in Bohemian Rhapsody was hilarious when Freddy admits to the audience that he's "bi". LOL You've been in a band called "Queen" and have dressed like a member of the Village People for years.
Coming back to this: Of course the uninteresting and boring Oscar Bait wins yet again At least the show was fun to watch and Spiderverse won best animated
For a directorial debut it was great, the performances were good and it had a realistic portrayal of 13-14 year olds. It was well shot and I thought the music was pretty decent, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. I'd probably give it a 7/10, but that's just my opinion lol
Eighth Grade was one of my favorite films of 2018. I was also surprised that it didn't get nominated for anything, especially for Best Director or Best Actress.
I’ve seen all but 2, A Star Is Born and BlacKkKlansman, and quite a few were definitely not Best-Picture-worthy. Also, Hereditary was snubbed as well as Toni Collette. I’m gonna burn Hollywood to the ground. EDIT: The day before the Oscars I watched both BlacKkKlansman and A Star Is Born and I thought both were quite good but I still think The Favourite and Roma were the best.
There some shots on the movie that could be clearly enchanced by the right use of color in Roma, espcially the forest fire and beach scene, i have a lot of other issues with the movie but if he likes it, whatever, its still a very low year for movies
Idk if YMS is Latino (since he is not from the US) but I as a Honduran can say that Roma isn't anything that obliterates modern cinema, not even latinamerican cinema (Argentinians do the best movies) but for this year and with the movies Roma is competing, it is just the best film, a square 8/10 the shots are awesome and the actors did great and that is all it needs to win against fucking black panthering
@@matiaslaguna9118 I don't think it needed color. Yeah, it would look better, but it would maybe be a distraction for the symbolism. I like that Cuaron took that risk and made it b&w at a time where people aren't used to or hate it
@@hr-g4640 its kinda sad because its still a good movie, it still fails in create a conflict or something that makes you care about the protagonist, i never felt any risks on the desicions that Cleo made, "oh youre pregnant?, dont worry we have your back" "oh youre a servant, almost a slave, nvm were gonna let you go to the movies, go out with dudes, go with us on trips, etc", "oh your master is mean with you??, ohhh but shes under a lot of stress so she its not a piece of shit, its just a human". I felt that Cuaron could made a lot more with the story and the character of Cleo (i also didint like Yalitza, i found her very dull), idk, in the technical aspect the movie is solid, but it fails to get me on the narrative of it
I really hope it wins Best Animated Feature. I liked Incredibles 2 fine and all, but Spider-Verse was far better and it pushed the animation medium to another level.
0:45 - A Star is Born 2:39 - BlacKkKlansman 3:14 - Black Panther 5:37 - Bohemian Rhapsody 7:53 - Green Book 9:17 - Roma 10:05 - The Favourite 10:53 - Vice
I really wanted the movie to be more focused on the band rather than mostly Freddy, but I probably would’ve enjoyed it if they didn’t butcher him as a person then proceed to give him the most cliche, cookie cutter redemption arc.
Hate to be that guy, but as for why Museo and Mandy didn't get nominated for anything, I'll try to explain. Museo, if nominated for anything, would've been nominated for Foreign Language Film. But unfortunately, it's a film from Mexico, the same country that submitted Roma this year. They can't submit 2 foreign language films for that category, and the Academy only really look for films in English typically, with exceptions such as Roma and Cold War. But you're probably right that since it was a RU-vid movie, it probably wasn't taken seriously for anything else. But people did say that about Netflix, and now they have one of the most nominated pictures this year with Roma. As for Mandy, it unfortunately wasn't qualified due to how it was released. The academy has a policy for eligible movies that it has to have at least 3 days in a theater with at least 3 showings per day. Unfortunately, Mandy only had 2 showings per day during it's 3-day theatrical release, thus making it ineligible. Hopefully I explained the reasons clearly, as reasonable or unreasonable as they may be.
It's crazy how the Oscars let genre films win last year (The Shape of Water, Get Out {actual good movies} ) and now they're back to the usual oscar bait.
A friend of mine got dragged to the theater for Bohemian Rhapsody. He fell asleep at the part when Freddie was giving Mary the ring, and woke up when he was telling the band he had AIDS. That’s all he got out of the movie.
I saw A Star is Born with my mom. She LOVED it. I kept checking my phone for the time, knowing that due to its runtime it should end at 5:45. 5:35 hit and the thing was nowhere near an end (not even really at the "falling action" part of the story). I ask myself, "how will it end on time, then?" I answered, "Oh, he dies, got it." Then he died. Yet somehow my mother, who saw this movie when it came out in the 70's, was shocked by its conclusion. Truly a masterpiece, 10/10.
The plot isn't anything special if you've watched the original A Star is Born, or any movie focused on the music industry, really. Felt nice to watch it though, since I used to be a Lady Gaga fan.
@@normalgirls1 Well, clearly my mother disagrees, as the plot really threw her for a loop. Jokes aside, I can see its value as a movie and how it can be a fun watch, but it's nowhere near the best movie of the year.
It easily could have taken the spots that Blackkklansman was nominated for if the Academy was looking for a "diverse" movie to push. Blindspotting was better in pretty much every way.
i wasnt crazy about blindspotting. some of the camerawork was flat. the tense scenes weren't shot particularly well and the the cop wasnt the only one that wasnt oodly calm during the finale. the writing was crazy good though. i just wish they had a better director.
I remember my sister asking me if there were a youtuber from the ones I follow who talked about A Star Is Born, because she hated that movie and couldn't believe the rest of the world loved it, so she wanted to hear someone who agreed with her, so I shared this with her as soon as I saw it.
*Tilda Swinton gives the best female supporting performance of 2018. The makeup/hair and song "Suspirium" should've been nominated in their respective categories.*
What annoys me the most is how they snubbed Suspirium for best original song, which was made as part of the main score of the film and actually plays during it, but instead they nominate the Black Panther song which only plays during the credits and was made to promote the film rather than for the film. This category becomes pointless when they nominate songs made for marketing and promotion which doesn't mean a shit in the actual movie, it's actually surprising that they didn't went as far as nominating Pitbull's Ocean to Ocean in this category seeing how little they seem to care about it.
This is the video I didn’t realize I needed. Agreed with most of your takes. I hope this becomes a trend and you make a nominations video every year until The Academy hopefully loses all cultural credibility... WHICH I HOPE IS SOON.
I really don't understand why Roma is getting so much praise... I honestly tried to enjoy the movie but after an hour i got so bored that i had to give up, maybe I'm too dumb to understand it but the lack of storyline just makes the movie unwatchable for me. Yes, it's a masterpiece of cinematography but I would call it art rather than a movie.
Hawke's performance was amazing, I don't understand why the academy overlooked it, specially because this year didn't had many strong male actor performances that compared to it. Such a shame.
“It is seriously embarrassing this film is being nominated for best editing” *goes on to win Best Film Editing* The academy is such a credible company right guys?
A movie about an isolationist, successful black nation whose leader learns the importance of helping other black people. So he helps african-americans who need his help far less than africans living in abject poverty in africa... Why couldn't they have made a Black Panther movie where they focused on all of Africa rather than just the fictional country and the us.
The Oscars should really go back to only 5 nominees. I get that it sells more, but when every movie has multiple nominations, it holds much less influence.
