I had no plans to review this car, but once I drove it a realised just how good it was and had toe share it with you. Not a car I would buy myself but you need a company car to do lots of miles in the look no further.
The BMW 320d X-Drive has enough performance to put a smile on your face, great fuel economy and a lovely ride and handling. Before you get too excited, it's not perfect but join me for a drive and I'll tell you more.

I'm going to say it again, but I loved my 2010 330d coupé. For the two of us, I couldn't fault it. Comfortable, economical and for me, the 3lt engine was a peach. Ooodles of torque to get past most traffic with ease and most importantly, safely. And if I ever went out and felt like a "good drive", then it obliged with realish :-))... As for the new 3 series, I think they're really great. And unlike a lot of people, I do like the 4 series big grill. It's really grown on me and harks back to the BMW's of the late 50's and early 60's. Nice one PP :-))...

My last car was a 320d m sport touring. It was the perfect do-it-all daily. I had it from 96k to 144k and it returned 52mpg on a run, and almost 40mpg around town. It was refined, fast enough for 90% of situations, comfy, good looking, good handling, and loads of room & load space. You can't fault them.

Hey Ped. I had exactly the same spec car earlier in the year thru work for a trip, with the exception of slightly bigger wheels, and I too was well impressed. Great ride, plenty of go, brilliant infotainment system and looked the part exterior wise. But the book price, for the car I had, was over 40k! 40k for a 320d! Which I just couldn’t get my head around. So yes I totally agree, if you got one as a company car you’d be seriously happy but as a personal purchase, they’re just over priced for what they are. Great review as ever though

I had one. I didn’t like the tachometer on the right. It had some electric gremlins. The sports seats were a bit hard but comfortable after 10k miles. After the first model issues it gave 30k of fault free miles. Smooth. Not powerful but not gutless either. It’s quite possibly all the car you need in real world situations. Economical. Not fast but sufficient. Smooth. Quiet cabin and feels refined. A bit disconnected at times due to the isolated cabin and lack of steering feel. The steering is precise otherwise. Love the torque. Relaxing car to drive if you’re not looking to rev out. I got one after my 335d (F30) caught fire from the EGR. That felt like world’s fastest diesel and I thought I’d never go 4 pot but it doesn’t feel like a downgrade. It’s hot hatch performance of the 90’s. What I liked most on the 320d was the trick suspension. The electronic dampers push down the car at the front. This reduces the sickly seesawing motion associated with acceleration. It makes the car feel planted for a non X drive variant. Anyhow, I think this is a fantastic balanced and detailed review so thanks.

Absolutely. I like the way my black e91 s series looks but the paint has been wrecked over the years and the marks show up so much. The car looks filthy in no time and not to mention it gets stinking hot on a summer's day. The paint gets so hot to the touch that on a scorcher touching the metal parts of the car risks actually burning your skin off and that's not an exaggeration. I watched an insect land on the car once and it sizzled instantly. I'll never buy another black car again (even though I think my car looks pretty menacing and awesome in black). I see videos from hot countries, like USA or UAE, where people spec cars in black from new and I just think they're utterly bonkers. To make the point; I used to have a neighbour with a white 118D. The car was parked in the sun and it was a 30 degree c day. I touched the roof of that car and it was cool to touch. I didn't even try to touch the the roof of my car, I could already feel the heat waves just by standing near it.

I can relate to all the comments as I have a 2019 330i M Sport which is a GREAT car. Great economy, performance, handling, comfort. Not too impressed with the OE Bridgestone Turanza tyres after only 12,000 kms . Buying Michelin PS4 S tyres to replace. Interesting in Australia, the 320d was a good seller in Australia but with no taxes relating to exhaust emissions and Dieselgate publicity, the model has been removed from the price lists as petrol models are very economical and good performers.

I've owned several cars and my 2020 M340 is by the far the best I've ever owned. AWD is great for Canadian winter as well as for beating M-purists off the line in their vastly more expensive , previous gen M3s and M4s. As much as one of those cars has been my ultimate goal, I realize I have all I need with this car.

I had a 320d business edition back around 2009 and it was a lovely car to be fair. Was really well spec’d and as I did a lot of miles back then, the 60mpg was great. These days I do much fewer miles and have the new M340i, which is just about my perfect all round car. Took it to Ikea at the weekend, packed loads in and averaged 42mpg (from a 374hp 6 pot!). Given the performance, the economy you can get from that car is some form of witchcraft.

I purchased a 320i touring xdrive in 2018 as one of the run out cars before the new model. Great car... but I do wish that I had waited for the latest model. The upside? It will give me a little time to wait and go for the 340 in 2 years, before they cease production! I’m desperate to have one decent 6 cylinder in my driving lifetime. I say decent because I don’t count my old TVR S2 that only ever seemed to fire on 4 or 5!! 😁 Now that was a summer of fun... 2003....all I remember was that I had a green arse... all that sitting on grass verges, waiting for the AA!! 😁

A Ferrari or Lamborghini from the 70's are both capable of more than double the speed limit. What difference does it make at this point whether a car is capable of 170mph or 220mph? You can't use either to their full potential. I often hear people say "400hp is the perfect amount to exploit on the road so you don't risk your licence"Say whaaaatttt?? If you exploit 400hp on the road you'll be doing an obscene speed. Even my car with 210hp is capable of getting me into trouble if I happened to get caught by plod.

My Mercedes A220d 2.2 AMG Line DCT has just gone back now as it had covered 100,000 miles in 4yrs. In that 4yrs my total Average fuel consumption was 65.8mpg. You really cannot beat that, its superb. My typical weekly average was 70.5mpg, covering 600 miles per week, ish. It was a personal lease rather than a company car, but i get all my fuel paid. But being a 2.2 you get more fuel allowance from a 2.2, so i ended up in -pocket every month which was nice. I really like the Mercedes 2.2 engine, coupled with the DCT and Launch Control it was good fun too !.

Hi Peter, found the video very interesting especially about performance, costs and driveability. We regularly drive to Cornwall from West Sussex to visit relatives. I think you know that road quite well but I have done it for over 50 years. We either take one of two cars. Let us call them car A and B. On the same journey Car A averages 55 m.p.g and B 25m.p.g. Yearly insurance(same spec for both) A= £407, B= £244. Annual road tax A= £475, B=£570. There is possibly just a few minutes( less than 10) time difference over the journey between the cars, with car B slightly quicker. Both cars are comfortable but car A is much quieter. So what is my conclusion. When I tell you what the cars are you can draw your own. A is BMW 5 touring 2 litre diesel same age as the one on the video and B a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

I used to be a real BMW fan boy - they are good cars. I had from new a E46 318i x 2, a 330i and a E92 353D - great cars. What killed it for me was when the big D got stolen through the OBD hack I reached out to BMW UK with the issue for a conversation on the problem. They responded with a brochure and a price list. Talk about mugging off your customer base! Been in Audi's since - not that I suspect they would have behaved any better mind you. You should probably think about car security as a topic for a video btw - look into the Autowatch Ghost if you ever do - must have bit of kit in a desirable car in my opinion.

Unfortunately as others have pointed out it's BIK makes it a non starter for a company car in the UK. I had to go for a 330e as it was the only car that made financial sense,the tax saving pays for my MX 5 lease, so basically drive a 330e msport and get a free MX5. I am looking at an Evoke hybrid for my next company car,300bhp and a tenth of the tax on the 320d. Diesel company cars are dead in the UK until they change the BIK rules again.

Hi Ped Well done a worthy alternative to the exotics once in a while.👍I know you are not a fan of the dreaded oil burners, but as you rightly point out the latest Euro 6 engines are cleaner than petrol. However all major manufacturers committed commercial suicide with the Emissions Scandal. However the future is not assured with the energy policy and electrification time table. My blood pressure is rising too fast, have to stop this rant and retire to the bar.🍷🍷

121g CO2 is one of the higher company car tax bands. The BIK is 27% this year plus 6%penalty for being a diesel. For a higher rate earner that's an annual tax bill of approx £5.2k for this car. Then if you need to pay personal usage contribution it becomes an expensive lease for what you get. Company car drivers should look at electric cars just now as the BIK is 0% this year and only 1% next year and 2% the year after. So if your company has tesla on their car scheme, you can have it at no cost this year and buttons the following years.

The interior of the 3 series is miles ahead of the A4 and C class in my opinion. Certainly agree with you on diesel engines - great for motorway cruising but they kill most of the excitement you get from a regular petrol so I think I’d take a 330i over this.

Noticed you didn’t review the coat hanger 🐵 Great video as always PP and unlike the other mob it’s reviews of normal cars as well as the lottery cars as opposed to the videos headlined “ when is my fourth Ferrari arriving ?” Or “should I buy the mclaren senna?” Like to see a Mercedes or Audi comparison against the BMW

What I don't understand is why anybody would choose this one or the 320i over the 330e. xDrive is coming to both the 330e sedan and the touring as well, so it's kind of a no-brainer really.

Early on you wanted to black out the surround of the grill that to me just makes it like any other BMW that bit of chrome just refines the look of the front end but it wont make the car do any better its a smart usable car that you`d be lucky to own or hire for a change. So thank you Pete another gem of a review roll on the next one please!!!

Man if you don’t usually drive diesel you got allot of money for ridiculous sports cars that just waist fuel like nobody’s business. And the G20 to go buy, even though this one is great, but you should try 330D or even 340D and then tell me it’s slow. While it isn’t as efficient as the 320D it’s still a lot better then any gasoline sports car you drive and at get go at least even faster. Once I am moving 260km/h if ever possible, I don’t care how fast it get’s there from 230km/h. But I do care the awesome 6 diesel cylinders and the lovely rich sound is propelling me there with ease and efficiency. That’s a perfect sports limousine to me!

My wife had a 420d x drive M Sport for 2 years and 81k miles. Worst BMW we have ever had! (And we have had quite a few!). I am not a fan of privacy glass, unfortunately when we just bought our new Range Rover we could not get it without😟

This is a classic example of someone reviewing a car in a sector of the marketplace they know nothing about. Sorry if you want a company car you avoid the xdrive due to the high monthly tax and and if you do opt for the diesel (now only getting 9p per mile as per government claim back) you go for the 320d. Alternatively you hit the 330e and avoid the 40k super tax and dodge a big chunk of the company car tax all together.

I dream of those stats as I trundle up to 60 in 10 seconds, good video but don't knock the performance. I've just gone for the kia proceed gt. Pro's only 21k, better looking, 7 Yr warranty and similar stats, cons interior and tech less premium.

Perfect company car is the Tesla Model 3 SR+. You just can't beat the BiK for pure EV. Even BMW G20 330e is better than a traditional 320d imo.

As usual, excellent content but I remained underwhelmed by the BMW especially at around £38k Anodyne and generic class design and not one which would inspire you, at 4am on a summer morning, to look out of the bedroom window and feel any love and pride of ownership or even a desire to go for a blast. The front grill is also just shy of the baboons bottom on some of their bigger cars and SUV’s. I just can’t help feeling that BMW have lost some of their design mojo. It must be the case when some of the Chris Bangle stuff is now looking edgy and cool. It was particularly striking to me as you have reviewed some absolutely cracking stuff since lockdown started to ease,

Black car colour,no thanks!As soon as it's washed it quickly looks dirty again.As for shape BMW 3 series is not that great a shape.Gesture control and lane warning departure a waste of time -technology for the sake of technology and not of any practical sense(like those Audi camera wing mirrors).BMW prices too high and as are servicing costs.

Hmm..BMW is a long way from the car I bought in 1985..not technically but in desirability does everything well but to me looks to dull uninteresting, lazy styling ......this is a good car but years out of date. I’m sorry not to look at it as you did but it reminds of work, aftershave, Meetings, targets, aggression, worry...I just could not buy one. I stopped at BMW Bristol a few weeks ago and there were maybe 40 of these preregistered and sat covered in dust on 69 plates and all black, white or silver. It truly is all the car you ever need but I would swap that ability for innovation, style, inspiration...this car has none of that...it is a nice Biro...you get one for selling widgets, nobody ever buys one because they like it...and for that reason, I’m out, 😨😨😱😱😱😱😀😀😀

wow... sorry but NOT good at all for a company car (BIK way too high), this would cost a basic rate tax payer £300 per month (with private fuel) so that's £600 a month for higher rate. a similarly priced 330e (hybrid) would cost £100 per month (with private fuel) for £200 for a higher rate tax band... No contest there from what i can see... from a personal purchase, yes great for fuel and economy though :)

I liked the . . . no, get rid of that grille and that damnable "accent lighting"! OMG! Horrid! Apart from that, it needs to be the touring version to pique my interest. And yes, no, I don't like those wheels either. So no, I wouldn't buy it either.

bmwman1981 fully aware of that, I own one. It’s all to do with the bhp output being circa 250. When you combine that with a emissions at 39g it’s the perfect company car for low BiK. Much like the 340i isn’t a 4.0 litre is it. If you didn’t know any of this, I suggest you change your username.

Paul Lovesey I owned a bmw 535 years ago when the model number meant something unlike now it’s just a trim version with a bit more power why don’t bmw just badge it as a bmw 320 hybrid then it would be much better and not defeat the object of buy a actual 330 .its like bmw offering a 316 with all the Mtec spec which would be absolutely pointless and it annoys the people who spend thousands more to buy the big engine m car

Amazing how manufacturers are trying to get rid of their stock of diesel engines, knowing their life expectancy is very limited...
@stubones
@stubones 4 года назад
Are they? There aren't hundreds of thousands or millions of diesel engines in different sizes, power outputs and specifications sitting in giant warehouses lol. The engines are built on demand based on the planned number of vehicles to be built "that week". Do you think manufacturers have billions sitting around to make engines on the off chance they'll end up in a car.

I have a 330e arriving the first week of September and as a company car the 330e gives great performance at the lowest company car tax. Diesel is 38% BIK the 330e is 10% rising to 12% in year 3 for a car that will do 0-60 in 5.9 secs!
