Trucks are more popular than ever before, and with this new popularity, manufacturers are building off-road oriented versions of their highway haulers. Ford has their Raptor, RAM has the Rebel and 3/4-ton Power Wagon, Toyota has their TRD-Pro line and Nissan has the Pro-4X lines. While GM had their Z71 Off Road, it stood to reason that they would make a more trail-ready version, and that's what the Trail Boss is. With a factory 2-inch lift, Z71 Off-Road suspension package, 18-inch Good Year Wrangler DuraTrac Off-Road Tires and a 2-speed transfer case with auto-locking rear axle and skid plates, this truck is ready to hit the trails.

I bought a 2020 Custom Trail Boss 2 weeks ago and so far I love the thing.

I have been researching the hell out of both the Custom and LT Trail Boss. Watching videos, reading fan forums, etc. The biggest complaints are about the interior and the halogen headlights. There are only TWO things on the Custom interior I would complain about. The lack of a shutoff button for the auto start/stop and the blank spot for the productivity screen controls on the right side of the steering wheel. The blank spot looks awful. I won't complain about the lack of a sunglasses holder because I don't use them anyway, nor complain about the lack of a center console storage bin. There are two glove boxes. That would be adequate for me. As for the halogen headlights, I see nothing wrong with them. Easy to change to LED bulbs if you want. I'd keep it incandescent because it's cheaper to replace. Now, what GM has done is a smart thing for them. They are funneling you into the LT Trail Boss, which is almost $10k more in price. For that, you get a center storage bin, more USB ports, the auto stop/start shutoff button, steering wheel controls for the phone and productivity screen, a one inch larger infotainment screen and a 0.7 inch larger productivity screen, LED headlights and a slightly nicer looking interior. Plus more available add ons to tick the price up even more, aka heated seats, Bose audio, etc. The Custom Trail Boss is a hell of a bargain. For around $35k (give or take), you can get the 6.2 engine, ten speed transmission. That combo is closer to $50k on the LT version. People can rag on the Custom TB all they want, but it's truly a bargain. Hell, you don't even get LED's on the Ford XLT. I've studied those as well. You can't get a beefier naturally aspirated engine with Ford either. I don't know about Dodge. I'm long out of their FCA loop. The Custom TB might just be my next truck. And I'm a longtime Ford fan.

agreed but opt for the 6.2 with 10 speed tranny super smooth

Nice review, thanks. The standard engine is the 4.3 V6. Not sure why some hate on this truck. I have a 2.7 STX and this Chevy equivalent looks bad ass.

I am enjoying my 2024 version. It has a 332 axle and 10 speed transmission. So far on road I am getting 22-23 mpg and in city about 17 mpg. I love the bright tail pipes.

Thank you for this video. Looking to buy a new truck in the next couple months and this is at the top of the list. How does that factory dual exhaust sound? I've always put exhaust systems on my trucks but it would be nice to save some money if this has a good tone.

Bought a new Trail Boss today, mine has the 5.3, and it’s fairly quiet unless you get on it, for me I don’t mind, but if you really want a throaty V8 sound you may want to go aftermarket. I do like the tips though.

It's not bad, actually. I never did capture it, due to the fact that I was losing light quick, and it was a cold and rainy evening. It has a nice low grumble to it.

that 5.3v8 always change every gen like the older one i was getting 11.2 with my mixeddriving and now 15.2 chevy has been making there feul manament better like more sensetive or more often 4 cylinder mode but I still think that the 2.7 has the best mpg in it's class though.

LMAO, that truck says 50 grand on the outside but a straight up hooptie on the inside. That interior is so outdated looking, it's what's keeping me from getting one. The exterior on the other hand is beautiful.
@NeighborhoodCarReviews
@NeighborhoodCarReviews 5 лет назад
+True Boxing Kings Yeah. I have to agree. I think GM played it safe with these, and with Ford and Ram killing it, they really should have invested more in the interior, where the driver spends most of their time. The TrailBoss is cool. Outside. Inside, it looks like last generation.

Forget the custom trim level and go with the LT. I can’t believe all the missing features in the custom. I looked at both and ended up with the LT
@NeighborhoodCarReviews
@NeighborhoodCarReviews 5 лет назад
@@ericmalencore1921 I agree. I wanted to review an LT Trail Boss, but the dealer only had the Custom trim at that time. Still neat, but it is really devoid of a lot that people are accustomed to having on such a truck.
@wickedmainah950

@@ericmalencore1921 the lt is at least 10 grand more for a slightly bigger screen, power heated seats and led headlights. Not worth it to me.

I'm not sure which is my favorite trim option - the Custom Trail Boss or the High Country. Thoughts?
@godwhomismike
@godwhomismike 5 лет назад
Custom Trail Boss = Work Truck, which ticks exactly what you need and then adds in the off-road package without forcing the buyer to step up several trim levels just to get it. That would be my first pick, although my home renovations drained me and I am now leaning towards the Colorado.
@bevo1776
@bevo1776 5 лет назад
The Custom Trail Boss is a whole lot more affordable. The High Country is gonna set you back $55-$65K.

They are all doing it but what is the point of the gauge needles sweeping on startup? It’s annoying and of no legit reason in my opinion.
@BeAPartOfTheMagic

It is used to determine the position of the needles, essentially to calibrate and diagnose them to make sure they are in the position the software thinks they are.

It need a selectable rear locker not the g80 and then it would be so much better
@SubieandFriends
@SubieandFriends 5 лет назад
I understand why some people prefer a selectable electronic rear locker, but the G80 rear locker has a long history (has been an option on GM trucks since the 70's) AND has proven to be a great locker on Generation after Generation of GM trucks....the G80 has a known reputation to be very reliable and extremely capable in any off-road terrain....But what really sets it apart from other lockers/e-lockers.....the G80 is a fully mechanical rear locker, which results in a stronger, more reliable and robust unit with less parts and less maintenance requirements. Sure u don't have a button u can press to activate the locker whenever u want.... but once u get familiar with how the G80 operates you can easily sense how to activate it on demand by slightly pressing both gas and brake pedals at the same time, which normally locks the locker and gets u ready to overcome any off-road obsticle that requires a locked locker before u attempt to cross the off-road obsticle (mud pit/deep snow/muddy/snowy ditch/ice covered trails or any terrain that puts one rear tire in the air and one rear tire on the ground)......you can see how it works by viewing GM G80 demonstration videos, there's several videos on RU-vid and you can actually see how a 2wd truck with a G80 rear locker is better able cross a slippery ditch without much tire slip, compared to a 4wd truck with open differentials which wasn't capable of crossing the ditch....

That steering wheel is so plain and boring too bad they didn't make the same premium wheel for all trims... sigh*
@jpass12
@jpass12 5 лет назад
I really like the exterior and the options, 2" lift, wheels, tires etc., but Chevy could have done better with the interior. It screams cheap! Everything inside looks cheap. No audio controls buttons on the steering wheel? Really? I am still considering it because it has 20% off. You would be crazy to pay retail for this.
@jpass12
@jpass12 5 лет назад
@@cementshoexpress3693 I'm sure the '19 LT has the buttons behind the steering wheel but not sure about the bare bones Trail Boss. I saw one today driving next to me and the exterior it looks awesome.
@wickedmainah950
@wickedmainah950 5 лет назад
I do miss the steering wheel stereo controls in my custom, but for 33k it was a great deal, the cheapest lt on the lot was 44k. Made my choice easy. I don't regret getting the custom at all, fun to drive truck, handles way better than my 13 Sierra did and the 5.3 got plenty of nut to set you in the seat.
