@@thankyou9085 thank the EPA regulations for these little numbers. Ford isn't the only one as you all know. I'm in the market for a new truck and just found out Chevy put a 4 cylinder turbo on a half ton 🙄
Turbos have come a long way. They aren't the same as 20 years ago. Its all about design. You can have a very bad v8 and a very reliable 4 cylinder turbo.
waterzap99 I agree in other engines they are great. But in the ecoboost after 2016 they are not so good. Don’t get me wrong some might do well if not over loaded.
@@waterzap99 lol bull fucking shit. The technology has come a long way in terms of performance and efficiency. The basic fundamental principle of having a turbo is still going to require more service and care than a NA motor. It is always going to be relatively less reliable. That doesn't mean unreliable. Every mainstream engine these days should run pretty trouble free. That being said, ecoboost still should have a long life. You're obviously not a mechanic..
Ridiculous, crazy rumor and claim that Ford started suddenly building Ecoboost worse after 2016. The 3.5L was redesigned for 2107, but all redesigned elements improved reliability. The 2.7 had no design changes until 2018, so 2016 model year had no bearing on that particular engine.
I got the 5.0L V8 for simplicity and yes; it sounds really nice. I plan on keeping this for a very very long time. So, I figured that this the best engine package to get.
I've had it since 2016 (bought new, about 20 kms on it, Canadian). Currently has about 155,000 kms roughly 97k miles. Had noticed the knock around 50,000 kilometers. Has gotten worse in the sense that there is a now a new type of 'knock'
@@gous5649 Did you ever fix this? If you discovered the knock at 50,000kms, why didn't you bring it to the dealer? Wouldn't it have been under warranty at that time ...
The numbers on the 3.5 EcoBoost are impressive, but I'd be concerned about long term reliability if you were really doing some serious hauling or towing with it. The fuel economy ratings are virtually the same; in my mind, a naturally aspirated V8 just sounds more reliable. I don't know, maybe it's just in my head.
@@cheeznhard always keep up. Ben a ford fan sence I was 12. I am 50 now. 5.0 v8 will always beat the 3.5 and all EcoBoost engines. 5.0 is way more reliable. 😁😁😁👍

I have one, Put it in Sport Mode, it will throw you back in the seat and take off, you never mentioned the 4 modes, Sport, Tow/ Haul, Snow/ Mud, Normal, Sport mode is pretty damn fun for a truck, lit up the tires, love the truck so far, other than the headlights are not very bright, going for the PIAA upgrades,
Smh...and here I am rolling in a 2013 F150 5.0 4x4, leveled on 20 inch rims and 305/55s with a Super 44 exhaust. 76,000 miles and counting. No issues whatsoever. Bought the truck used with 35k miles. 😉
Ecoboost = the guy that workout with steroids. V8 = the guy who workout all naturel. Yes the guy on steroids is bigger and faster, but at the end he will fall first and much harder. I will never again own a turbocharged vehicle, when they go bad they dont comeback. Unless you have a ton of cash laying around.
2018 2.7 EB turbo owner here, been over a year and not one single problem, yet lol. Love the power and torque. Fuel mileage is awesome for a truck. Got it in shadow black, crew cab, 2wd, STX with the 3.73 Axle. Absolutely love my truck, best everyday driver. Takes the kids to school, me to work, pick them up, take them to wrestling practice and grocery shopping everyday. Racked up 20k miles and so far so good. We'll see if the engine blows up soon like everyone says it will. Lol.
I subscribe to that same philosophy however being a 3.5 EB owner, I know that 3.5 has enough power to push my 4x4 crew cab around w/o needing turbo around town and keep up with traffic, accelerate up hills etc. Consider Chrysler's 3.6 engine which would be similar to the Ford 3.5 get's good reviews -and it's in Ram Crew 4x4's. Remember that 24V VVT DOHC V6's are making more power than the smaller bore 8's of just 15 years ago. The Ford 3.5 is a 24v VVT DI/PI DOHC, would likely perform admirably w/o turbo, however has the turbo there when needed.
Same it is naturally aspirated and almost as much horsepower and torque as a V6 with twin turbos if you to tune the 5.0 up and put an intake or exhaust on the 5.0 they could have more horsepower and torque
The 2.7 is amazing. I have an 18 with it and the 2.55 rear end. I dont tow anything. I recently went on a 4.5k mile road trip, kids and camping gear onboard, and averaged 22mpg, hand calculated, and I have a lead foot. It powered up every mountain like it was cruising down a flat road. And it has the quickest stock 0 to 60.
Sounds amazing and ill bet it did well on those mountains. The low end torque of the ecoboost engine will make it awesome to drive up hills. I notice when going up hills the 5.0 v8 in my truck does well but you got to rev it to around 3000rpm. Not complaining though because the sound at 3000rpm+ is wonderful 😂
I owned a 3.5L for 2 years, 88,000miles. No issues at all, ran smooth, very fast stock in Sport Mode. If you’re looking for the natural deep growl stock then this is not for you. Be prepared to buy downpipes and a catback if you do want to go that route. I am currently driving a 5.0. Awesome truck, great sound, reliable sure! 86,000miles nothing but gold. but I do miss the torque of the 3.5. With the 5.0 the power is right there though, no clicking into Sport. I am going to be purchasing a new 3.5L though soon. Just loved that truck. If you take care of it, you’re good! The gas mileage on both suck for the most part, it’s a truck, not a sedan.
Loved my 5.0's that i have owned, until 2018 when they matted to 5.0 to the 10 speed and all of a sudden there were oil consumption issues. Ford wanted to replace everything from heads, motor , and the final fix was a "longer dipstick and almost 2 more quarts of oil. Not for me, unloaded it and got the 2019 Limited, with the raptor motor, while i still do not like the way it sounds i can out pull and out run any truck out there. wish they would fix the oil issue.
Most have reported a fix, the break in period is at around 5k miles, and once you have done all of the tsbs and drive it til 5k miles, it should fix the problem
There is a dealer in Ga. that includes a lifetime power train warranty on every trk. they sell. So if you really want the twin turbo its one less thing to worry about as the miles rack up.
Thats a total lie Some 3.5 ecoboost engines have cam phasers ticking and timing chain wear Most have reported a fix for the 5.0 oil consumption issue, the break in period is at around 5k miles, and once you have done all of the tsbs and drive it til 5k miles, it should fix the problem
I owned a 2004 Ford F150 and it was nothing but trouble. Spark plugs and cam phasers. Now the 5.0Ltr engine have some sort of an oil consumption issue and a 10 speed transmission that is garbage. Ford has to stop screwing around trying to improve their engines to suit the Tree Huggers and the politicians that want 100 MPG out of a pick up with a V8. There is no excuse for the garbage Ford is putting out with their drive trains and motors these days. They have been making V8s since 1932. Get your shit together and stop screwing the public with your new garbage!
Honestly, this video kinda pissed me off. I sell Fords. I was curious as to your insight. But honestly you did a mediocre walk around and didnt even address the topic. Which engine?
@@BenHardyCars You know that a V8 has more moving parts than a turbo V6, right? Also, why is the maintenance more on the EcoBoost? I love the 5.0. Quite possibly the greatest engine ever made, but the EcoBoost is right there.
Ehh I agree with the 5L prior to 2018.. oil consumption and other issues would push me towards an EB. I will say I had a 2011 5.0 and it was the best truck I’ve ever owed.
The 3.3 V6 is a very underrated engine. It is a nice choice if you are just using the truck as a personal vehicle as it's good on fuel and should be less expensive to maintain in comparison to the ecoboost engines.
Yea but why not spend 500 bucks and get the 2.7? I mean even if you finance the whole thing you’re talking about a difference of like 10 bucks a month? 2.7 is a rocket considering displacement. I’ve got a 2.7 now prob going back to a 5.0 when my lease is up.
@@snipert6841 The 2.7 Ecoboost is a sweet engine. Up here in Canada, where I am, most of the times the 2.7 comes in more expensive packages rather than a stand alone option. I guess that's why the 3.3 V6 is a decent choice, especially considering how expensive these trucks are.
V8 is more reliable, the turbo needs more maintenance and wears out the engine more. Ford needs to fix their doors they open all the way out and don’t stop mid way.
No replacement for displacement. 3.5 liters is comically small for a full sized truck. The only thing its good at is driving on the interstate with no load. Its not a pulling engine. Id rather drive the old 7.3 idi than than the 3.5L
@@flatrangeoperator6718 then you haven’t driven both the motors you’re talking about right here. I own both. The 3.5 eco outpulls my 7.3 power stroke all day long.

If you want fun, 3.5 is a hands down smile maker. If you want “old school” then 5.0. I personally wouldn’t really want the 5.0 after owning a 3.5EB for 15,000 miles. Yes, mine got bought back by Ford, and refunded, but I still like the 3.5 engine. It’s a beast. Actually driving it is worth 1000 words.

V8 has more torque at higher RPMs, basically opposite of turbo, which means the V8 can pass cars easier on the highway, but slower off the line than turbo.
Just got an eco boost and I can definitely say it passes cars faster than anything I’ve driven. I’ve had plenty of v8 high HP cars and this is faster. Also faster passing than my 2.7 eco boost Edge ST. Not sure how, but it is.
@bradj A truck needs good low end torque to haul and pull things, the five oh doesn’t make good torque till 4000 rpm. So that makes it difficult to pull a boat up a ramp or get a TT moving and get up to speed
I prefer my 5.0 for simplicity and reliability, but I will say my brothers 3.5 EB is more fun to drive. My truck is a work horse and Ill drive it till it dies. We’ll see how long it lasts. Oil change every 4 - 5 k miles. Also I’m getting 17mpg around town in my 5.0, and my brother is getting 15mpg around town with his EB. Both extended cabs 6.5 ft beds.
Only if they fix the oil consumption problems of the third gen. I'm likely to buy a used '16 or '17 until they do. No excuse for this. Turned a great motor into a liability. Fix it, Ford!

the new 5.0's are a piece of shit.. oil burning, rough shifting, vct rattling junk.. btw did you get the warped dash and the transmission clunk in that one?
Sport mode, 4A if equipped, and 3.73 rear axle will beat the ecoboosts.......something ford chooses not to equip most coyotes with due to fuel mileage crap cafe standards.
Ben, I ran into your video and I am glad I did. I am debating over the 2.7L vs. 5.0L and I wasn't sure about longer term cost and reliability between the two. However, you addressed that in your video and confirmed my thoughts. The 5.0L is a proven engine and in the long haul it will be more durable and less expensive to fix than those turbos. Thank you.
EcoBoost 2.7 for the win, if you want a v8 get it in a muscle car and enjoy it the way its intended. Nobody's paying attention to your truck because it has a 5.0 and "sounds good". Coyote in a mustang is great but in the truck the EcoBoost is logically the smart choice, and faster.
David Quisenberry you need to do your maintenance more frequent on a v6 twin turbo than a NA v8 if you want it to last . My ecoboost mustang oil came out like mud compared to my gt
I own one and very wobbly and dont like the ten speed transmission I love the motor though they need to go back to drawing board and look at how they can get a better ride the shocks and suspension very wobbly when I get up to 75 miles an hour the entire truck just shakes and it's very wobbly.
Always go with the v8 if you plan on keeping it. And if you do have to work on it you don’t have all that EB plumbing in your way. Yes, the EB does produce power, but it beats itself to death to do it; and the mpg drops below a v8 when using it like a truck. EB is like waiting for a grenade to go off. There’s no replacement for displacement, period.
@@blizzrd8153 These people don't get it.... Like them or not, Ford's proven you don't need a V8 anymore and dropping it with lower their CAFE number. I'm better 2021 F150, and Tundra don't have a V8 option and the others will soon follow or hybrid them.

@18wheels4life - That's exactly what I'm thinking. Get a V8 and once the warranty expires, add Go-Fast parts from FoMoCo. The problem with V6's is that the fuel mileage savings really isn't true, and there is virtually no after-market for added performance. Like you said, we know what's available for the Mustang.
That’s what I’m wondering about, I hear the 2018-2019 v8 are bad with oil but when I think of twin turbo in the long run that sounds like it could be costly.
@@trhenryvlogs9638 When the ecoboost first came out in 2011, I believe Ford offered an 8 year 160 000 km warranty on them. I think the warranty now extends to 200 000 km with newer versions. As the truck approaches that mileage, you will need to make a decision as to whether it' s worth it to replace the turbos. The interesting question I would like to have answered is whether the cost of replacing the turbos impacts trade in value on the truck. Dealers are already notorious for trying to offer as little as possible on trade ins.
Ben Hardy Ohh ok. My dealer had two and sold them and Ricart ford had 11 at one time and they’re gone too now I think.
