Putting the new Hobie Passport and 2019 Outback through the bumps in wind in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Ironically we had a capsize from the Passport - in the Harbour (not in the open Strait) - as Jake was leaning out and around messing with his water bottle! Out in the 4-5ft wind swell it was fine. A little hard to keep in a straight line at times with a larger following sea on the return - but otherwise great!
The Outback handled it all much better - but it's bigger and the flip up rudder which we found does much better anyway!

Glad to know the passport 10.5 can handle chop, that was my biggest concern

I laugh the exact same way when chop is running over my yak, so much fun

Great video, congratulations. Being fishing kayaks, under these conditions it is impossible to practice fishing. All effort and attention are focused on navigation without capsizing. For these conditions, suitable kayaks are those with a good balance between primary and secondary stability such as Revolution 13 and 16 and Outback until 2018, the latter preferred by fishing tour operators around the world.

Passport is a great kayak. I've done a lot of inshore marsh fishing here in Texas on my 10.5, but I wouldn't dare go BTB on it

How do you find the new outbacks hull design in choppy conditions compared to the older model outbacks? To me it looks that the new outback takes on more water and nose dives alot in to swell, do you end up with much water in the hull after a session like this?

Those are 3 footers (at least) not bumps.. that lil kayak is proving to be a good investment

Yea... constant 3-4ft with occasional 5ft to keep us on our toes!

Have you taken the Passport out in similar conditions with the drive it's sold with? I'd imagine the v2 turbo fin MD 180 drive makes it quite a bit more useable, but that's a pretty expensive upgrade for most folks, at least compared to the price of the overall kayak itself.

Hi Eric, Yes... well sort of. The first time I took it out it was not quite as windy/rough - but still 15kt+ winds and good 3ft-ers and I had the standard fins. - It did just fine with the standard ST fins (which used to be an upgrade) That being said, you can upgrade to Turbo fins for a couple of hundred bucks for that drive - you don't need the MD180's. Remember, the MirageDrive has been around for 20 years - it's why we all love the Hobie's!

On a scale of 0 being don't buy and 10 being definitly buy/highly rwccomended, what would you rate the passport? I'm looking into getting one, and a PA is a bit out of my price range and I'm not keen on outbacks (seen a fair few people tip the over)
@WestCoastOutdoor
@WestCoastOutdoor 4 года назад
Hi Gaming and Outdoors! You've plenty flip the Outbacks? The Outback is the most stable Hobie after the PA's - so I'm surprised that you've heard/seen them flip? It's impossible to compare a Passport with a Pro Angler. The Passport is definitely worth the money - but it depends on how tall / big you are and what you're expecting from it. Get yourself to a demo day or a dealer that lets you demo one and see for yourself - ideally with a Passport, Compass and Outback and try them all. - or if you're on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada - call by anytime! :-)

@@WestCoastOutdoor in fairness The outbacks I've seen tip they people in them haven't been the smallest (looked to be pushing the weight limit) but just seeing them tip made me iffy. Thanks for the fast reply!

Which kayak was faster?

Hi Jarius - the Outback in a stroke for stroke - but of course heavier over time. (we used turbo fins in both for comparison and conditions)

The revo 13 seems less stable and I've been through more rougher conditions than this. This kayak will handle offshore just fine

I'm thinking about buying a passport 10.5 due to my budget, but do you think it'll handle fine in the bay ?
@WestCoastOutdoor
@WestCoastOutdoor 4 года назад
Hi Jacob, i don't know which Bay you're referring to, but probably yes. That being said the 12.0 Passport will give you more stability etc, with little difference in price if want the peace of mind. Here at West Coast Outdoor we have most models to try/demo at anytime! (we are one the water at a Marina)

Very helpful video--it's one of the only one where the Passport is taken offshore when there was wind and wave action. Do you think that the Passport will be large enough to fish from in the ocean? I'd be taking it out in So. Calif, but I'd go out and back in the morning when the wind and wave action is much lower. There have been lots of comments about the Passport where people say it'll only be good for children, the rental market, and friends in family to play with--the Passport is not suitable for fishing and certainly not offshore fishing in the Pacific Ocean. But nobody making these comments actually has taken the kayak out and tested it. So your video is the first one where the Passport is in the ocean in less than perfect conditions. All of the videos that review the Passport take place on glass smooth lakes or other body of water. I don't care about a glass smooth and windless lake. Also, how does the Passport compare with the Compass? I'm not going to be a serious fisherman and certainly not like the kayak pros that use boats like PA or Outback. My fishing will be completely casual--catch a few sand dabs for dinner, etc... The Passport has plenty of features for me. I'm trying to decide on whether I'm going to buy a Compass or Passport. I'm a newcomer to kayaking but my main use will be recreational with a little fishing thrown it. I just want a boat that will be safe offshore in So Calif in mild conditions.

Hi Lonebeagle - Thanks for watching/commenting. That's exactly why i did it (everyone else on glass lakes / ponds) The short answer is YES - very ocean fish-able - as long as you're not too big or tall. (We're both 5'9 - 10 and 160-170lbs. I included the bit about Jake turtle-ing it at the start but as mentioned in another comment reply - entirely his fault - in fact it felt so much like the Compass/Outback initially he forgot it is only 10.5ft with a different hull design. That being said, it is not as stable as the Compass - I would probably still get a Compass over the Passport if budget/space etc was not a major concern for pure fishing in the Pacific. But the Passport is a very capable boat. Try get to a demo day or a dealer with demos and check it out for yourself! (like us - but we're in BC, Canada - in a resort with fishing if you're up for a vacation!)

@@WestCoastOutdoor That's very good information about the Passport based on your actual experience. Just what I was looking for. It also answers my questions about the Compass/Passport comparison. I figured that the Compass would be a better boat for the serious offshore angler who used his kayak frequently in the open ocean and did not use it for recreation either on lakes or ocean. They're both about the same weight fitted according to Hobie. And I'm 185 pounds 5'8" so the Passport seems to have a capacity sufficient for me. If I was a big guy then it would be the Compass. Thanks very much for you quick reply. If I'm ever up in your part of the world, I'll stop by!
