Both the Subaru Forester and the Honda CR-V are competent family haulers with plenty of cargo space, high-tech safety features and available AWD for mild off-road driving. What makes them different, and which is the right one for you?
Why did we choose these two small SUVs? We recently did a three small SUV comparison, and the comments were all, "Hey, where's the Subaru Forester?" So we decided to take the winner of our compact SUV comparison and match it up against the Subaru.
There were no losers in this comparison, no obstacles that one crossover could handle while the other struggled. In the end, it came down more to the personality of each. We liked the Honda's responsive engine and well-tuned transmission. But the Subaru was a little less sterile and more adventure-ready with off-road features and a great infotainment system. Either way you go, you'll have lots of room and a safe machine to take you on your journey.
About the 2019 Honda CR-V
The 2019 CR-V checks virtually every box on car shoppers' lists in this increasingly popular vehicle segment. It makes family life easier with a cavernous cargo area, abundant backseat room, easily accessed car-seat anchors, and more clever storage solutions than an Ikea. It will also keep you safe. Crash test ratings are flawless, and accident avoidance technologies are standard on all but the base trim.
Behind the wheel, the Honda CR-V responds smartly to inputs and handles well, yet its comfortable ride and quiet cabin won't wake the kids. Under the hood, the turbocharged engine found in most trim levels provides best-in-class acceleration and fuel economy. Wrapping everything up is the CR-V's excellent reputation for resale value and reliability.
The 2019 Honda CR-V is offered in four trim levels with virtually no options. The base LX is decently equipped, but the EX comes with a substantial bump in desirability. It provides a better engine and an abundance of equipment, including more advanced driver safety aids. The EX-L really just adds leather and a few choice niceties, while the more luxury-oriented Touring piles on the features.
Infotainment features include a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Audio phone integration, satellite radio, an upgraded rearview camera, and second-row USB charging ports. Numerous advanced safety features are also standard on the EX, including automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
The top-of-the-line 2019 Honda CR-V Touring boasts LED headlights, dual chrome exhaust tips, roof rails, automatic wipers, hands-free functionality for the power liftgate, ambient interior lighting, the navigation system, and a subwoofer for the audio system.

2019 Subaru Forester Review
Thanks to its high stance, standard all-wheel drive and available turbocharged power, the Forester has long been a hit with buyers who live in snowy climes or drive off-the-beaten path. Now Subaru fans who enjoyed the previous model, as well as just about any other consumer shopping for a small crossover SUV, will find even more to love with the redesigned 2019 Subaru Forester.
The Forester has grown marginally since last year, giving its already inviting cabin an even greater sense of space. Subaru also reworked the dashboard, giving it a new touchscreen infotainment interface and, for the first time in a Forester, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Safety has long been a Subaru staple, and that association is further solidified for 2019. The EyeSight suite of driving aids - lane departure and forward collision warning - is standard on every trim. And features such as blind-spot monitoring and automatic reverse braking are available on most versions. The DriverFocus system debuts on the Touring trim; it incorporates a head-tracking feature and sounds an alert if it senses the driver isn't paying attention to the road. It also uses facial recognition software to store memory settings for up to five drivers.
The 2019 Subaru Forester Sport trim includes automatic high-beam control, LED foglights, keyless entry, an upgraded driver information display, an additional driving mode, an additional traction setting for the X-Mode system and the All-Weather package.
The top-trim 2019 Subaru Forester Touring model includes all of the previously mentioned optional features, along with the LED foglights, a heated steering wheel with wheel-mounted shift paddles, driver-seat memory settings, an eight-way power passenger seat, heated rear seats with remote-folding levers, and the DriverFocus system.

A 2017 Subaru Forester saved my wife's life. A full size SUV crossed over a median and hit her head on going 60+. The guy in the full size SUV died and my wife was able to walk away with a fractured sternum and some scratches. I went out and bought her a 2019 Forester before getting the insurance check because she wouldn't drive anything else,the rental car company didn't have a Subaru. Safety should be the number 1 factor you guys look at. Subaru saves lives. Because of that and that alone they will always have my business.

Owner of both here. CR-V for wife and Subaru Sport for me. Both are great SUV no doubt and both will make you happy. Just a couple of things I want to mention that the reviewer said nothing about and that is ride quality. Hands down and by a HUGE margin the Forester is the best and not only that, it beats all of my previous cars that I have owned in my life ( more than 10). The suspension is really a piece of art, you cannot make it more comfortable in any ways. The engine...ok, lots of complaints from many reviewers but at least for me I honestly love the power it delivers fo my personal use. Have taken many trips, many hills, and I like it a lot. It does not need 50 extra hp, that is not true unless you like a very spirited driving. The ONLY thing I do really hate about the Forester is that thing about the "start-stop" feature of the engine. There is not "off" button so every time you turn on the car I have to push a button to deactivate it. Ok, CR-V, it has a HUGE advantage in cargo, I mean the might seem on paper somewhat similar they are not. The CRV feels like it can carry 40% more cargo. The ride quality is definitely not as soft and beautiful as the Forester, it is somewhat "jittery" on bad roads. Yes, the engine is more powerful, it "feels" about 20% more powerful or so. I like the CVT much better of the Forester, but the CRV is not bad. So, what to buy ? Simple : Honda for long term reliability and cargo space. It is bland and boring and has a lack of sporty personality. Go with the Forester if you love ride quality, it is so so so good, feels like if you are driving a 90´s Licoln Town car without the yatch feeling. Also the Subaru has a nice personality, feels like you are not driving a masive produced car, more of a premium feel ( at least for me). Before I forget, if off-road is your thing don´t even try to compare, the Subaru wins hands down. I am happy with both, one has 8,000 miles and my Forester 5,000. We love them both and I think wife is happy with hers and I am happy with mine

The honda although i love hondas i would never buy it that engine has oil dilution issues and that cvt eww. Rav 4 Na engine and true automatic and cant beat that toyota reliabilty just my .2 cents

@@gigi9467 I couldn't disagree more. I've had two Hondas - they were OK though I did not like the handling much and reliability was average. Subsequently I have had three Subarus, all utterly reliable, all more comfortable, all with excellent trade-in value. My next car will be a 2020 Subaru.

Don't forget the Si Mode on the Forester gives a more sporty throttle response and more spirited driving experience.

Nabeel Ahmad True!...I never feel my Forester is slow when in Si mode. I use it on it on winding roads and city streets. Save “I” drive mode for more efficient highway driving. Best of both worlds.

After driving the CR-V, I bought the Forester. Yes if you floor it, it is slower, but the overall driving experience is worlds better. Plus, the all wheel drive system is superior.

I had a 2019 CR-V EX-L AWD for two weeks. I now own a 2019 Forester Sport (AWD is standard). Here's a few of my observations. 1. The seats in the CR-V are the most uncomfortable of any car I've ever owned or driven. The seats were the deal breaker for me. I got rid of the car because of the seats. The Forester has among the most comfortable seats I've ever been in. The padding is just the right density and the support is in all the right places. An amazing difference! 2. Pretty much all the tech in the Forester is more advanced and more user friendly. The infotainment center in the CR-V was awkward to use and simply not very good. I have a Google Pixel XL and it was not supported for Android Auto. In fact, there were very few brands supported at all. The Forester, however, has a great, big, easy to use infotainment screen with physical buttons that make operation when driving so much simpler. The on-screen buttons and controls make more sense and are easier to use. Plus, my phone is supported! :-) 3. The CR-V may have a few feet more cargo space, but it seems the space in the Forester is wider whereas the CR-V seems a little taller. I don't pile things to the ceiling, so I found the wider storage in the Forester to be much more useful. 4. The Forester kicks the CR-V's butt on AWD. Don't take my word for it. Go look at videos on RU-vid comparing the two - there's tons of them. 5. Yes, the CR-V may have more acceleration than the Forester, but the Forester has plenty for day-to-day. You will need a little more time to pass at higher speeds, however. 6. The CR-V was "dressed up" on the inside, the Forester Sport is not Subaru's "dressy" model, but it's beautiful on the inside. The colors and materials are amazing and wonderful. I love it. The Forester definitely feels more "me" with a very sporty look. (I'm 50-something.) There's a lot of other things I could say about both. My bottom line is this: in my mind, the Forester is superior in pretty much every way to the CR-V. Due to the unfortunate problem with the seats, I got a rare opportunity to really experience both cars. One important tip I would give to anyone car shopping is this. Do your homework on the internet. Look at specs, talk to people. Maybe take a couple for a quick spin. You know... all the normal things you would expect anyone to do when shopping for a car. Then, when you are pretty sure you've found the right car and you think you are ready to buy, spend about an hour in it. Sit in it on the lot for at least 10 or 15 minutes. Adjust things. Make sure it fits you. Then take it on a nice, long drive - not the typical 5 or 10 minute test drive most folks do. Spend at least 40 or 45 minutes driving. It is very revealing. You will know the car a lot better and make a more intelligent, informed decision. You will own this car for years to come. It will cost you a lot of money. Don't waste thousands on a car you really don't enjoy or even grow to hate because you were impatient or felt a little funny asking for an extended drive. If your salesman doesn't like you really checking out the car, then maybe you need a new salesman. I didn't do this in the CR-V because I didn't think I needed to and it cost me thousands of dollar in depreciation to drive it two weeks. Don't let that happen to you.

Subaru Forester. I live in Alaska, love the ground clearance, the light within the vehicle, and the handling in ice and snow. Prefer the looks. Honda CRV - mini van. Test drove them both, Forester was much more fun to drive, do not find engine lag a problem at all. Car is plenty perky.

I own a 2019 Forester Sport....tiring seeing reviewers drone on and on about the speed/power of the Forester. It has plenty for what the vehicle is. Its an all wheel drive SUV. My daily commutes are 3/4 highway and i've had absolutely no issues getting up to highway speeds, passing, and drive quality feels fine on a winding roads through the parkway. In fact I often am surprised how easy it is to get up to speed....easy to look down and say "oh hey going 53 in a 35". Bottom line.....test drive stuff, build your own opinion , and get what you like! And if you buy an SUV for drag racing or enjoy comparing them to smaller or more performance type vehicles then prepare to be disappointed.

I test drove both, and personally I found the crv slow because the transmission has an incredible lag that even a Toyota Corolla will smoke it off the starting line. The forester is more than adequate in sport mode and the AWD is nearly jeep capable.

I just test drove today the forester and the hybrid crv and the forester was smother and responded faster to the gas pedal. Howver ghe forwster has less horse power than crv hybrid, I do t get it?? Don't know anything about cars but the forester dwfwntly felt faster and more responsive. Why I don't know if it has less horse and torque power

I also test both today, have the same impression, I took with me 2 friends and one of them has a CRV of his own, and we 3 agree that the Forester feels quick, a lot.... so I'm not sure what is happening here.

I own a forester and I drive it pretty fast but it doesn’t really make too much noise. It actually accelerates really good and the infrastructure of the forester is better.

This video is biased imho. Here in our side of Canada, where roadtrips tends to be longer and -30C winter prevails most of the year. Nothing beats an SUV that has AWD(this video didnt event highlighted that important thing), good ground clearance, ride comfort and of course safety. I bought the Forester Sport and it's like a home to me, engine is not as bad as many reviewers prey on but that's pretty much the only bad thing they can say about it. Other than that, Forester is great car! if you need a speedster I think it's more obvious to buy a sporty sedan/coupe instead, and not in an SUV.

I got a 2019 Forester Sport back in October, and yea, the engine isn't nearly as bad as everyone says. Yea, from a dead stop, it's slow going, but once you're at speed, it's got more than enough passing, or merging power.

I love my 19 forester. Coming from a Honda Fit it has lots of power. The visibility is awesome, and the sunroof is huge. Plus I keep getting complete strangers asking me about my cool looking car. The CR-V was just yawn. Boring.

The Honda CR-V has been my favorite car for a long time and that’s not gonna change. Idc that the Subaru Forester might be a better car and have more better stuff, but I still love the Honda CR-V

I picked the 2019 Subaru Forester Sport over Honda CRV, because of costumer service and loyalty. Honda sucks when it comes to service. You have to wait in long lines for service. Subaru goes by appointment and no waiting time. Here in NYC time and excellent service is a plus. Honda sales people also think that they are better than anyone else. I don't go for that bull shit. Subaru sales people are more humble and considerate. and don't push you around. Anyway, I saved almost $3000 on the MSRP. Honda didn't want to go down on the MSRP, because they say that somebody is waiting on line and dying to buy their CRV, so they don't need my business.

I love the CRV and hate the Forester before the test drive. But after I did, Forester wins hand down in term of comfort, build quality, handling, personality, and more. Even the salesperson of Forester are more pleasant and motivated than the Honda ones.

Honestly, I still love my old 2000 Legacy Wagon (sitting lower makes me feel more connected to the road), but there are times where that extra ground clearance would be nice. The best part is that it just works. It's not flashy, it's not plush, but every Subaru I've ever driven has worked well, and I didn't mind getting some dirt inside, or some slushy snow stuck to the undercarriage. Most of these others look like nothing more than lifted showroom cars that should never leave the pavement. Now if I could afford that 2020 Outback Onyx Edition XT ...

Read a few negative reviews about the CR-V battery and bought a 2020 Forester Limited. The navigation/infotainment system is planned, the safety features are excellent and the soft-touch interior is really attractive. The front leg room is amazing!

This review is clearly biased towards the crv, especially when she said the cvt didn't do the same thing as the Subaru, when it clearly did 5 seconds before.

Would have been nice if they had tested both in the snow, which is a major reason why people who live in the north buy these vehicles. My guess is the Forester would have won hands down. Oh, and as far as engines go, you might want to do a little research into the Honda direct injection issues before you opt for the turbo

Funny as a former 2018 CRV owner I really like my 2019 Forester for its functionality and engine as then 1.5 T was a dog on the highway. Maybe turbo lag. We don’t buy a mid sized suv for performance, do we?

Yes its turbo lag and on the highways it doesnt help because small displacement turbo has a distinct disadvantage if you want power on the higher rpms while ur at speed. Torque curve is non-existent at higher rpms cause it takes a dive. Thats why all these 1.5L turbo engines have high torque range at low rpms. But when you need power at speed the turbo lag kicks in vs a naturally aspirated engine that is linear.

We looked at both the CRV and Forester. Got the Forester. The CRV's interior plastic seemed hard and chintzy. My wife took over the Forester and won't give it back! :(

Ravi Shah I agree. I was floored about the leather on the doors. Not sure it is real though Subaru states the leather on the wheel and stick shift is real cow hide. I have the cloth premium all in black very comfortable.

I HAD a CRV 2017, very unhappy with it, bought a Forester 2020, Quality on the interior is miles above the Honda, years ago, the Forester would be considered Luxury. Thank you for the great job and keep it up. I have owned a Subaru and I’m buying another one soon it would’ve been a Forrester if I would have a better engine choice, I’m leaving BMW after owning several. Subaru is world renowned for being environment friendly which does not enter into a vehicle comparison but important to the families Who buy these vehicles if they have a concern about what’s gonna be left of the earth for their Children & Grandchildren. I own the current Forester in the touring model and I drove the CRV 2018 in iceland also in top trim and before that I own a Audi A6, Acura MDX and a crosstrek hybrid (all AWD). I wouldn't say both have a huge margin of difference as a whole but as I was testing the CRV on the ring road it felt the transmission are slow to react and felt like a lack of power even though I wouldn't call the forester quick. Interior wise, I felt the seat for the CRV to be softer so felt more comfortable but a little skeptical for its long term durability. The dash and info wise, Forester also fair much better and more intuitive. As for AWD, I never have to shovel during the winter, just drive right out so that say something. The reason I pick the Forester at the end because it has a bit more personality and a use it a lot during winter for snowboarding.

Got me the 2017 Forester 2.0 Turbo which gives it 255 HP. That extra power comes in handy on the highway when needing to get somewhere quickly. I think they may offer the 2.4L Turbo next year, as they have with the Outback. Then, the lack of power complaint would go away.

I have a 2016 forester xt, they definitely need to put the fa24 in the forester but also they need to ditch the cvts if they want to pretend these things are any good offroad. ground clearance is great but its pointless when the cvt can literally cut all the power if it doesn't like what you're doing..

Oh I agree, but the great mpg will also fade. I have a Forester XT 08 and the new Forester 2019 and there is a HUGE difference in mpg....like 25%. Maybe the CVT will make the spread a little better, but boy the XT turbo is a gas hog

Two things from having a 2015 Forester for the past five years: 1. The panoramic sunroof and big windows are simply awesome. Seriously, it makes a huge difference and if ever I get another car, the pano sunroof is a must. 2. I don't love the power train. I used to live in Denver and flooring it at 50mph was downright lethargic. That being said, at sea level, it's decent. And if you want to make it more fun to drive, get a throttle-mapping device. I got one three months ago and it makes the car oh so fun to drive.

Drove both. CRV seemed lackluster as well in the get-up-and-go category. And lets not forget about the oil dilution issue. Honda said they fixed it with a software change, but I'm still skeptical. Foresters rear opening is wider than the CRVs. Eyesight is now standard all all trims 2020. Both were good overall, but the oil dilution issue sent me over to Subaru. I would have probably bought the CRV Hybrid but its not out yet.

This review seemed to kiss alot. Such as rear leg room. The simulated gears that you can get in a sport forester, that if you want to pass you can knock it down a simulated gear. The tail gate opening is wider on the forester so you can fit larger things in easier. Also the back doors on the forester open wide. After comparing quite a few of the new SUV's on the market. I have recently bought a forester sport. Also for me I've never had a problem with the power plant in my forester. Always had enough power for everyday activities with great fuel efficiency.

As you mentioned, there is no real loser between the two. I like the Subaru Forester a bit more with its off road capability and interior. I still would have chosen the CX-5 over the two others, but these would be good backup choices for small SUVs. Nice video.

I generally concur. My wife has a 2017 (Grand Touring) CX-5 and two of our daughters have them as well (2016 and 2018). They really are great driving vehicles with excellent handling and fit and finish. All three have been super reliable to date. The CX-5 really does punch above its weight. That being said, I chose the 2019 Forester since we do a great deal of outdoor activities, including kayaking and off-road/primitive camping. The Forester is one of very few vehicles (of any size) that allows for a roof rack crossbar spread longer than the typical 30 - 32" that most have. I can carry our 14 - 18 ft kayaks with up to a 48" spread. Lots more room in the Forester as well and the 8.7" ground clearance and great approach and departure angles (for a compact SUV) are great for soft off-roading.

Motor Trend magazine figure eight test measure not only grip but accleration, braking power, along with shock dampening, sway bars, spring rates. It's the recipe that has the 2018 GMC Terrain/Equinox one full second ahead of the 2018 CX-5 in that test. You see, the Japanese cook the books in making a lightweight, small, and great handling cuv that journalist rave about and get fuel economy as a result. When the buying public review the Mazda it is loud and rough riding and a turn off with just a ride around the block. So 2018 Mazda adds to the CX-5 missing sound deadening and adds heavier acoustic glass. Now the suspension is taxed with sway bar and spring rates from the previous updates along with shocks that need revalving. Braking performance has suffered with the extra weight with longer stopping from 60 than a 2018 Terrain by over 10 feet. And if you want to compare real world economy, fuelly.com-which are owners reporting, has the new 2018 Equinox 1.5T besting the CX-5. Sorry to burst your Japanese bubble but most everyone is on the same playing field today and many have passed them up and especially on the cost to buy front thanks to dealerahips advertising on places like cars.com. It is public perception that lags because of you and the journalist want to protect their internet clicks and keep inflated resdiuals as the prices are higher to buy than non-Japanese, negating any excellent resdiuals value. The auto auctions thank you guys. This is especially the case for the Honda CR-V. Regarding pricing and value the 2018 Terrain and CX-5 are dead even today and 3 year, 36,000 miles from now. The Subaru is $2,000 less today and $2,000 less in the same time period. This all based on info gathered from cars.com. It favors the Terrain if I used 2017 values as it is an out going model and the best deal here. Though the base 2018 Terrain doesn't have dual zone climate control it does have rear seat upper vents. The Mazda does not until you go up to the Touring model. The Terrain SLE has dual zone and the CX-5 Touring has rear seat vents starting the last two years or so. Both cars are the same price on cars.com Early Mazda models do not have rear seat venting. The 2018 Honda CR-V is the most expensive at $2,000 more than comparable 2018 Equinox. The Honda still offers the old 2.4l and is $5,000 more than a 2017 Equinox 2.4l. It is just over priced at all levels. And at 3 years, 36,000 miles later the CR-V cost less than a Equinox. Which means the more expensive, new Honda has dropped more in value than the Equinox. The Terrain 1.5T receives the 9-speed transmission and has not been tested. Only the Equinox 1.5t 6-speed has been timed.

Assuming clean condition, the CX-5 had a private-party appraised value of $24,818. This is a 28% depreciation, which is worse than our long-term fleet average of 22%

We have a Forester and an Outback. We have found that the Subaru’s handle the 5-6 feet of snow we get every winter much better than our previous Toyota’s. My wife wanted cloth interior (🤮). I told her that she would be better off with leather but she didn’t want it. 3 months after buying her Outback she wished she would have chosen the leather. My Forrester has brown leather and I / we really enjoy it.

Advice : Minute 6:47 - Minute 6:51 "You say way faster than Forester"and sound is car revving. According to speed of terrain in your car window you actually are not revving . Should change that in post, no ?

Before you buy a CRV with the 1.5 turbo, check to see if they solved the oil dilution problem where gas gets into the oil. Especially in colder areas or if you drive short distances. Honda doesn't seem too concerned except to change the oil sooner, but you should be if you want your engine to survive a long life. Especially with a turbo attached to it! THAT problem was the main reason I didn't buy a CRV.

My first car was a 2004 Ford Explorer, but when I started commuting long distances I needed something with better gas mileage and ended up with a 2010 Kia Soul, which ended up getting rear ended and totaled by a Jeep Wrangler. After that I needed to find a car quickly and settled for a 2008 Honda Accord. I have to say though, I really miss having an SUV. That's why next year I'm looking to buy one. I've narrowed down my choices to either the new Toyota RAV4, the new Subaru Forester, or the upcoming 2020 Ford Escape. At this point in all honesty, given the its value, reliability, practicality, and most importantly safety features, I am leaning very heavily toward either a 2019 or 2020 Subaru Forester.

@@Honestandtruth Well with recent reviews of the 2020 Ford Escape saying that it is lower to the ground than the outgoing 2019 model, I've removed the new Escape from my list. One of the reasons I want an SUV is for the taller driving position. That pretty much leaves the Subaru Forester and RAV4 left. Like I said I am very heavily leaning toward the Subaru Forester, even more now.

I drove a forester for 10 months. I had to trade it in because the placement of the pedals / foot area is really uncomfortable and poorly designed. My right leg would start to hurt after about 10 minutes of city driving / stop and go driving.

Had/have both. 2017 CRV was a nightmare. Electronic issues with the head unit. Oil dilution, turbo blew w just 35k miles. And if you had a flat and it got repaired, all the warning lights would go on and Honda charged me $70 to recalibrate. Honda sent me a letter stating other things might go wrong with it. Also replaced the shift piece (Honda wouldn’t call it a recall though). Finally traded it in for a Subaru 2020 Forester. More rugged and a better overall vehicle. Alarms go quietly like a peaceful guide, acc system is much better. Material in the Subaru is all around leather (leather like at least) on the doors in the front and in the back. Honda just party in the front, plastic in the back. You can charge your phone with the car off in the Subaru.

I've did exhaustive research in 2017, included Edmunds. And bought the 2017 CR-V EXL. So far for the past 2 years, my CR-V droves and behaves just like the Forester she'd reviewed and described in the video. My CR-V transmission CVT was jerky when it was brand new, and still jerky now after 10,000 miles, especially in the morning when engine just started and sluggish to "shift" to a higher speed on a CVT~???!!! This is the moment when I truly missed my Toyota Prius CVT it was buttery smooth (2 Prius I've owned before traded in for CR-V). Never mind about the Honda entertainment system, it performs farless than the aftermarket $300 stereo. That's what brought me here to see Edmunds review on Forester, a possible replacement for CR-V. Did the Honda dealer shipped a specially tuned CR-V for this review??? Looks like I will be going back to Mazda CX-5. So far, the mean average for CX-5 ranked the highest.

Priuses don't have CVTs. The main motor-generator drives the wheels directly (via a couple of permanently fixed gears) while a fixed-ratio planetary gear matches the engine speed to the road speed by making MG2 (a big hugely powerful alternator, basically) spin backwards or forwards as fast as necessary. There are no variable ratios anywhere.

At 4.02 this video stated that the CRV has 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space compared to the Forester with 33 cubic feet of cargo space. Consumer Reports states that the CRV has 36 cubic feet and the Forester has 36.5.

There is no doubt that Honda has an advantage in most parameters. It's just a fun car to drive. Even as a vehicle for trails or barbecues, I would take the Honda.

Honda CRV is the nice pavement friendly, mom car. Complete with the don’t make me come back there mirror it is designed for town and pavement with faster acceleration to save you from those woods I didn’t realize that truck was coming so fast moments. A joy to drive for typical highway and city miles. Subaru is its counter part in many ways it will do well enough in the city but is at its best when road conditions throw you a curve like heavy rain, ice and snow on pavement but Forester really separates itself in safety technology and on the dirt roads and many surprisingly rough off road conditions that its superior AWD system, with various traction settings allow. You can take the kids to church and soccer but you can take them too the river and isolated campgrounds as well. No it isn’t a hold may beer rock crawler but its nimble hill climbing and rough road traction surprises many Jeep owners in how far it will go down the backwoods trails. Even if you drive in town most of the time you will still like the Subaru better if you are in northern ice and snow, mountain winters or areas frequented by heavy hydroplane inducing rainy climates.

You should mention the fact that many consumer CRV reviews on the Edmunds site talk about serious reliability issues with the Honda. Specifically fuel dilution of the engine oil and parasitic drain of the battery. Driving these cars for brief video reviews is one thing but having to live with a vehicle with on a daily basis with reliability issues in an altogether different kettle of fish.

In my opinion the Forester wins. Their Eyesight safety tech is standard even in the base trim which Honda lacks. Also the infotainment system in the Honda is terrible. The Forester offers Apple Carplay/Android Auto standard on the base trim as well, the Honda does not.

I have a 2014 FJ Cruiser and I think I can safely say that if you are doing any off roading that would stress the Forester's CVT you have absolutely no business in a Forester and should get an FJ, a Tacoma TRD Offroad, a 4 Runner TRD Offroad or a Jeep Wrangler. On the other hand all of those are far slower than the Forester, ride like old trucks and cost about $1,500 more in terms of fuel costs per year. Life is a series of trade offs and the 2020 Forester has the most of what I value at the lowest possible cost.

I owned a forester and it was great. Until it got older and started needing repairs. Repairs on a Subaru are as expensive as a German car so I sold it. I would not buy another one. Especially with the questiional cvt in it. That said, I'd buy a mazda or Toyota before I'd buy either of these.

One thing she doesnt know is the fact CRV only feels peppier because the torque curve is available at lower RPMS, but once you want more power at the higher end RPMs, the turbo will lag and the torque curve at higher RPM actually takes a dive vs the more linear curve of naturally aspirated engine. So small displacement turbos aren't necessarily better. Good for low end torque cause they need to compensate it for the turbo, but higher end rpm if you want the power you have to floor and wait for turbo lag and then eats more gas....

the cargo room is misleading. Honda still uses an old method to measuring the space which is why they appear to have significantly more room. In reality, they are very similar

I find it funny how you highlight so much on the Honda like all its safety features and how they are “standard” on almost all trims but fail to spend the same time saying how it is standard on every Subaru with the eyesight (which is standard on all models) also how everything you did showed your bias towards Honda small things like yelling, getting excited, adding balloons, and things like that for one car while just talking normal and harping on the other. Maybe just me but I’ve noticed a bias not with the show/program but with YOU and don’t think a person like you should be working in a job where an unbiased review is all you are supposed to be doing.

honda has engine oil dilution problem so they recalled all crv in china but not in America which is very interesting

It isn't interesting, it's just tragic. A fundamental flaw of the 1.5L engine used in the CR-V, Civic, and Accord. The recall implemented software mitigations that aren't true fixes at all too.

The Edmunds assessment completely contradicts Consumer Reports and CNET which clearly shows The Subaru Forester is far superior than the Honda CR-V.
