2019 Indian Chieftain Limited Rear Cylinder Deactivation and Exhaust

In my first review of the 2019 Chieftain Limited, I was unaware that the rear cylinder deactivation option had been turned off in the menu. So, I took it for another spin, this time with it on, to see how it felt and sounded. I also strapped some pretty decent audio equipment to the back to pick up a lot of exhaust sound, which you'll hear throughout the video.

I always hate it when my rear leg gets hot too, it's such a pain... that rear leg sometimes. lol I have owned four Harley's and still have two over a 35 year period, but I really like the Indians as well and glad Polaris brought them back. Makes a good rivalry to keep Harley from resting on it's laurels so much.

If Headstrom and Hendee were to come back now and see their Indian motorcycle, they would be so proud of what Indian bas become. I almost got a 2019 Indian Chieftain last month but ended up coming across a new 2016 Victory Magnum from the dealer.

what a beautiful sound ......... stock? when that is stock, there is no more need for an aftermarket exhaust (at least for me) - great job Indian

Gotta say that's a sweet girthy sound coming from factory pipes. Who needs the mapping, popping of aftermarket pipes. Sweet dude. Also what a gorgeous looking machine. It's a keeper!

My thoughts exactly. A big V-Twin should have a deep rumble, not "popping" like some idiot kid's Honda Civic with fart pipes.

Oh come on! No one made a comment about the "rear leg"??? That's how we can tell that your vlogs are genuine...you have brain farts just like the rest of us. By the way, I too used to be a Pats fan when I was six. Loved the old logo and the Red, White and Blue; but then I figured out how far away from home New England was!!! Been a Broncos fan since.

It is good to know the sound is still good no matter what the mode the engine is in. But the real reason for all this is the heat. I have a 2015 Chieftain and the heat from the rear cylinder was so much that I got a Crotch-Cooler from Captain Itch. My previous bike, a 2013 Crossroads did not have anywhere near the heat that my Chieftain does. I would be nice to see an infrared image or temperature measurement to show that the heat is really less with the new system. I don't think a review of the rear cylinder shut off feature is complete without this information. Maybe Mom's can help with this or a Rep from Indian. Keep up the great videos.
@NightcruiserMA
@NightcruiserMA 5 лет назад
True. Because I'm not as sensitive to the heat as some, I'm probably not a good candidate to speak about it, but an objective measurement of heat could be done with a laser thermometer. Interesting idea!

this rear cylinder deactivation tech is something harley has had for a few years now, i had it back on my 16 fatboy s, the way it works is that when the bike idles 4 a couple minutes, like when you're at a light, the rear cylinder will shut off 22 help keep the engine cool, its not so much 4 your comfort, but more so for the engine, with the harleys u can roll the throttle 4ward and it will turn the cylinder back on, or when u engage the throttle regularly it will turn back on, u really don't feel any lag or anything of that nature, i would compare it 2 the new cars that shut off at stops nowadays. i hope 2 test 1 of these indian chieftains soon. i gotta say that when i 1st saw the new design i didn't like it, i felt it lost what made it unique, but i must say i watched another video last night where the dealer had the 2 side by side and i said hmmmm i'm kinda liking this new 1 better lol.
@TheTripleDubya
@TheTripleDubya 5 лет назад
Yeah my 2011 103 has cylinder deactivation, it's no mystery, it just shuts off and sounds like an old Lister diesel pump when things get a bit hot whilst sitting still in traffic etc. The Indian seems to be much quieter about it but I can hear it working.
@jimtomstimpson1477
@jimtomstimpson1477 5 лет назад
Thank you for the video. I'm impressed with the cylinder deactivation being so fluid in transition. The new design is growing on me. I saw one in person yesterday, nice. The only thing I don't like is that the new fairing eliminates the spot lights and the 2019 owners will now have to pay extra for them as an option.
@NightcruiserMA
@NightcruiserMA 5 лет назад
It is weird how it grows on you in person, isn't it? I saw it in pictures and was disgusted, then it really spoke to me in three dimensions. I agree about the fairing, but everything I see about this bike makes it feel like it's meant to be more streamlined. I really do like driving lights as far as safety, but I could throw a couple on top of the highway bars for a relatively small investment.

I put stage 1 on my 19 chieftain and it’s just a little louder with some more rumble. I think factory is a little weenie sounding but they have to do that to meet noise and emissions for all 50 states. Just a sexy sound all around. Rear cylinder deactivation is seamless and really cuts heat down on the rider in the hot Florida traffic.

Great video Ev. It's the first I have saw on the rear deactivation on time you tube. I personally probably will not have an issue with the heat thing. Try riding an iron sportster in Yuma AZ in August. Now that's fricking hot! That red looks almost orange in the light. I finally talked the wife into riding in a sidecar. So in a couple months I should be able to start the process. Going with a Hannigan due to its easier access. Plus allot closer here on the east coast.

My 18 harley has the cylinder deactivation and it helps the heat in Texas, the idle difference and the weird sound throws me off. Except for the difference in idle you can’t really tell it is activated. When temps drop below 80 I turn it off

Thank You for the video. I was wondering how the rear cylinder deactivation worked. I own a 2011 victory cross country. Never have a issue with a heat problem. I live in MN so maybe a little extra heat is welcomed. I thought at first, another page for HD. Never heard good things from the HD shut down cylinder . But, this isn't a HD. I'm glad it doesn't hesitate. But, maybe Indian needs to come up with another solution for the heat issue. Thanks again for the informative rambling.

Hello Nightcruiser - I enjoy your videos and find them informative. I live in Arizona and was concerned about heat issues with the Indians. I purchased a 2019 Chieftain Dark Horse three weeks ago and so far haven't had the need to turn on the rear cylinder deactivation feature. Even on days when it's been over 100° the heat on this new bike has not been an issue for me. Now maybe next summer when it's 115° it will help but then again when it's 115° nothing much helps. I do have Rineharts on my 2019 and when I did test rear cylinder deactivation I didn't notice much of a change sound wise or in feel. Pretty seamless really. Not sure I'll ever need to use it but it's available if I do which is pretty cool. Now for the real reason for my comments... You briefly mentioned the 111 versus the 116 in this video and in the previous one. I would like to hear more about this. I almost sense that you prefer the 111 to some degree but I may be mistaken. I've been considering the stage 3 kit for my new bike but it's quite an investment and I'm not sure if the bump in performance is that great and if it's a bump I would prefer and enjoy. So far I find the 111 very nice. Indian is having a demo day here in AZ next weekend so hopefully I'll get a chance to ride a bike with the 116 so I can see if I would like it. I would still like to here your thoughts on the subject if you'd be willing to share. Pros and cons? Thanks.

Yes! Thank you for your comment. I have some thoughts on that and will have a video out very soon about just that topic. The short answer is that yes, I much prefer the 111.

They are interesting bikes I have ridden and rented a couple for longer rides to get a good feel day after day logging lots of miles still on a Harley ultra limited which I’m throughly satisfied with 68,000 miles not one issue-interesting to see the EITMS being implemented it does work Harley had this for a number of years not sure what year they started my past 2013 had It plus nice to see the lower vents really surprised me they didn’t have this from day one especially when the Victory CCT did, the engine heat on a warmer day was quite intense especially on the right side since Harley went with the liquid cooled heads like my present ride this has been reduced substantially to actually where it’s barely noticeable still considering one but I do acknowledge the work that has gone into these bikes and am impressed-I personally don’t begrudge anybody for what they ride never have never will and can’t understand some of the rhetoric that gets tossed around between brand loyalists I do however have issues with what I refer to as wannabe bikers again doesn’t pertain to any one brand but individuals who spend considerable amount of money on a bike than trailer it to events just to be seen riding up and down the streets just turned 60 and still manage to get 23,000 plus a year in and I live in Minnesota I have slowed a bit but still enjoy riding anyway just my opinion on these beautiful bikes and be proud of what you ride
@servicarrider
@servicarrider 5 лет назад
I don't remember the exact circumstances but "Back in the day" someone asked an Indian rider what was the difference between an Indian rider and a Harley rider. His response was..."An Indian rider can read."...……."You'll never wear out The Indian Scout, or its brother, The Indian Chief. They're built like rocks To take hard knocks. It's the Harleys That cause the grief."Sure do enjoy your videos.

I love Indian bikes my dad was a fan of the Indian brand also. Indian riders can read Harley riders barely can read but they cant read cursive. lol
@NightcruiserMA
@NightcruiserMA 5 лет назад
The thing is, and I'd love to do a video about this, I don't think Harleys are bad bikes, and I don't think most Harley riders are bad, either. But there is some percentage of them that seem to be completely insecure about any and all comparisons to their bikes, and they won't even think about other brands for fear they might like them. I just don't understand that thinking, but I don't think it represents that majority of Harley riders... (although... it may.... who knows?)
@grayboo212
@grayboo212 5 лет назад
And on the flip side, going by the comments in Indian and Victory videos I've watched, anyone who doesn't ride a Harley has some strange preconceived notion about anyone who rides a Harley. It's a strange phenomenon. It's like these people lump guys on Harleys into this one category they've concocted in their minds. When I read the comments on new Harley videos, most people aren't there bashing Indian motorcycles, they're there talking about the bike in the video. It seems to be the complete opposite when watching Indian videos. I don't think I'll ever understand it. Personally, I loved all the Victory bikes and have been pricing them lately, they're going extremely cheap where I'm at. The 2019 Indian Chieftain? Well, I think I'm going to love it once I test ride one. I've been on a 2016 and 17' and loved those (both friends' bikes) so I'm thinking they're only going to get better.
@gabbyhayes1568
@gabbyhayes1568 5 лет назад
@ grayboo212. Harley is an icon and the standard for cruiser motorcycles. But haters are gonna hate. Most of these Indian lovers are guys that couldn't afford a Harley back in the day, so they feel the need to put down the brand and the people that love Harleys. And let's face it, there have been a lot of Harley elitist who were down right assholes and put these guys down for riding imports. They are still butt hurt from years of taking abuse and feeling inferior so they put Harleys and Harley riders down whenever they can. It's simply insecurity.
@servicarrider
@servicarrider 5 лет назад
@Gabby Hayes First of all, context. The term “Back in the day,” as I used it in this instance references that period in time (1903-1953) commonly referred to in the motorcycle realm as the “Indian-Harley Wars” and the passage was excerpted, emblematically, from a widely known documentary portraying same. But of course anyone with even a cursory, historical, knowledge of either Harley-Davidson or Indian motorcycles would recognize that, wouldn’t they? It serves to simply exemplify that the notion, or perhaps more aptly, “quarrel,” has long been unresolved with no relief on the horizon. But I do believe that most of today’s ribbing is done in a generally good natured, albeit twisted humor as most riders that have actually lived the original Indian-Harley Wars have either aged out of the sport, passed on, or minimally…matured a little over the years. It’s no different than the Ford, Chevy, Mopar guys and it’s always going to be with us as long as the human condition remains, to some extent, competitive. True hard core motorcyclist always have and always will ride and own every brand that they can get their hands on because they love motorcycles. Pure and simple. As to your many perfunctory remarks. They are, in my opinion, so full of misinterpretation, innuendo, false premise, misnomer, conjecture, and unsubstantiated assertions that I am not even going to begin to unpack it on this forum. Suffice it to say that, demonstrably, it would appear to me that you are, indeed, what you say they are. By the way…I have had a Harley in my garage since buying my first one in the 70’s but my daily rider is a Victory. Look at my pseudonym. Do you have any idea what a Servi-car is? I hope that you too will find a bike that you like at a price that you like. No need to reply. So, please do not.

How does it work? Does it shut off both intake air and fuel? Does it change the cam lift? What about the spark? This is the only thing I could find at the forums I checked: "Harley's have had this for years as part of their Engine Idle Temperature Management System (EITMS). The theory is cut out the rear cylinder (which is the hottest), cut the fuel and spark, and let that cylinder be just an air-pump that helps cool the entire engine." I'm not sure if this is the way Indian rear cylinder deactivation works.

Rear Cylinder Deactivation The following Indian Motorcycles are equipped with rear cylinder deactivation: Model year 2019 and newer Chief, Indian Vintage, Indian Springfield, Chieftain and Roadmaster Model year 2022 and newer FTR 1200 models All Challenger models Indian Pursuit Rear cylinder deactivation was designed as an aid to reduce engine and exhaust heat to the rider. Rear cylinder deactivation turns off the rear cylinder when the engine gets hot and the bike is stopped. This provides enhanced comfort in slow-moving traffic and warm-weather conditions. For rear cylinder deactivation to be enabled on cruiser, bagger and touring models, the following conditions must be met: The engine must be up to operating temperature. The ambient temperature must exceed 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 C). The engine speed must remain below 1,000 RPM. The gear position must be 1, 2 or N. The throttle must be in the closed position (0 percent throttle). Rear cylinder deactivation conditions for Indian Pursuit: Engine must be up to operating temperature. Ambient Temperature must exceed 59 °F (15 °C). Engine speed must remain below 1000 rpm. Throttle must be in the closed position (0% throttle) Exhaust catalyst temperature must be sufficiently high for tailpipe emissions compliance. The rear cylinder will reactivate when throttle is applied. For Indian Motorcycle models equipped with Ride Command, rear cylinder deactivation can be turned off by accessing the settings menu in the drop-down from the top of the screen. Cylinder deactivation controls are in the Vehicle menu. When rear cylinder deactivation is functioning, an icon will illuminate at the top of the Ride Command display screen. For models not equipped with Ride Command, do the following to disable rear cylinder deactivation: 1. Press the right-hand trigger until "CYLdeAC" displays. 2. Hold down the right-hand trigger. "CD ON" or "CD OFF" will display. 3. Toggle to turn Cylinder Deactivation on or off. Press and hold the right-hand trigger to save the settings. CYLdeAC ON: Rear cylinder can deactivate CYLdeAC OFF: Rear cylinder cannot deactivate Model Year 2022 and Newer FTR 1200 Model year 2022 and newer FTR 1200 models include rear cylinder deactivation to shut down the rear cylinder when the engine is at operating temperature and at idle speed. For rear cylinder deactivation to be enabled on FTR 1200, the following conditions must be met: Engine coolant temperature must be above 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius). Ambient temperature must exceed 59 F (15 C). Engine speed must be below 2,200 RPM. Throttle must be in the closed position (0 percent throttle). For FTR 1200 models equipped with Ride Command, rear cylinder deactivation can be turned on and off by accessing the settings menu. Cylinder deactivation controls can be found in the Vehicle Settings menu. When rear cylinder deactivation is functioning, an icon will illuminate at the right of the Ride Command display screen. For models not equipped with Ride Command, perform the following procedure to enable or disable rear cylinder deactivation: 1. Navigate to the ambient air temperature display mode on the Multi-Function Display (MFD). 2. Long press the right-hand trigger until "CYLdeAC" displays. 3. Pressing the right-hand trigger will allow the operator to toggle between "CD ON" and "CD OFF." 4. Press and hold the right-hand trigger to save the settings. CYLdeAC ON: Rear cylinder can deactivate. CYLdeAC OFF: Rear cylinder cannot deactivate. When the cylinder deactivation features activates and the cylinder is deactivated, a "CylDeAC" message is shown on the MFD for 1 second. When the feature deactivates and the cylinder activates, a "CylAC" message is shown on the MFD for 1 second.

I rode one the other day with stage one exhaust and air cleaner. Such an improvement over previous years. I love how the Indian handles. My only concern is the ability to add a passenger backrest or luggage rack since they filled the area been the bags and fender in. Doesn't look like any ability to do so without removing the filler. Might be the deciding factor between another Harley or the Indian.

I don't have enough money to buy the new chieftain 2019. However, I found almost a new 2015 chieftain. It's only 200 milage and was bought last year from the dealership. The problem with it's price (16,000 USD), does it worth it from your experience?
@NightcruiserMA
@NightcruiserMA 5 лет назад
I had 2014 Chieftain for a year and a 2015 Roadmaster for two years. I can tell you that they're great bikes. I didn't like the rattle I had in the windshield, and they didn't fix that rattle until 2018, but if that's not a big deal to you, you won't find a better bike at that price. MOMS here in Massachusetts, USA has a 2015 Chieftain for $17,000, so I would say that's a good deal.

Ok asking for your honest opinion. This week is the big purchase! 2 bikes are the 2018 Chieftan Elite or 2019 Chieftan Elite(new style). Price is great on 2018....stage 2 in the purchase under $24k. 2019....well stock at MSRP. You’ve ridden both....thoughts?

@NightcruiserMA
@NightcruiserMA 5 лет назад
@@JLDock lol, I have the same fingers. Honestly, I think it comes down to what you care about the most. The only detractor for me on the 2019 is that it could be confused with a Harley from a distance. Is that enough to stop me from buying it? Probably not, since all the people whose opinions I care about are close enough to me to know it's not a Harley, so that's good. But where the '19 shines over the '18 is, in my opinion, is in the features like the rear cylinder deactivation and the throttle mapping. I like both of those features a lot, even if the heat never really bugged me too much on the '14 to '18's. Styling aside, the other big difference is the seat, but if you like one seat over the other, they're interchangeable, so there's that. I can say I've seen an '18 with the '19 gunslinger seat on it, and it looks good, but I can't say that I've seen a '19 with the "classic" seat. I have thought about it a lot, much like you it seems. I've had three Indians with much the same styling, and the '19 gives me the best part of Harley - the looks - without the "I can't think for myself" stigma and with the Indian smoothness. For me, my next Indian will very likely be a '19 Limited.

Finely The paint was chipping The thing was very comfy and looked great. But not very responsive or agile in the corners. For $20K + it was junk.

@@denniswilliams2179 Hi Dennis. Yes, you definitely can. I'll copy from Indian's site: For rear cylinder deactivation to be enabled on cruiser, bagger and touring models, the following conditions must be met: • The engine must be up to operating temperature. • The ambient temperature must exceed 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 C). • The engine speed must remain below 1,000 RPM. • The gear position must be 1, 2 or N. • The throttle must be in the closed position (0 percent throttle). The rear cylinder will reactivate when throttle is applied. • CYLdeAC ON: Rear cylinder can deactivate • CYLdeAC OFF: Rear cylinder cannot deactivate Hope that helps!

the 1 thing i can say is this, i was just like u between the 2 when i was shopping 4 my new 18, i liked the different look the indian had, but there was something about the SG 4 me, but was really liking the indian as well, so i test rode them both, n with the indian i felt the wind pushing on the fairing when i got up in speed, right around 80, i also didn't like the roll on power i wanted 2 feel the instant response. keep in mind i was between 2 18's i didnt test that 19, i bought my SG end of august, n i absolutely love it. i would have loved 2 test the 19, but another thing i can say is this, i hear people talking about the heat they feel on their inner thighs on the indian including this new model, this is something i experience with my 16 fatboy s, however with the SG i dont have that issue, n i have logged some hrs on my SG, already had the 1K service. i always say though u gotta get the 1 that gets ur dick hard, 4 me it was the SG, i love it, i feel no push on the fairing n i have pushed that thing up in the triple digits. it is a joy 2 ride. now with the indians u do get a lot of stuff stock that u would have 2 get a CVO 2 get, so there r some pluses n minuses 2 both, i am hoping 2 still ride this new indian and see if they corrected the wind issue with that new cut on the fairing. good luck with ur shopping, and again my advice is go with the 1 that gets ur dick hard lol, what i do is look and say if i saw this going down the road and i was on this how would i feel.

Yep, I was torn too. I test rode the 2019 Chieftain Limited and the 2019 SG Special back to back on the same day with the Chieftain being first. I was very impressed by both bikes and both bikes had their pros and cons. In the end I went back and bought an Indian but I don't think you can go wrong with either. If you haven't already, test ride them both and hopefully one of them will prove to be better for you. It sure is great to have choices. Good luck.
@chrissmith2492
@chrissmith2492 5 лет назад
yeah i did the same thing, i test rode back to back as well, where i am the harley dealership and indian dealership are like 10mins from each other, and that's really best thing 2 do if u can because u get 2 ride both bikes in the exact same weather conditions and get a good feel for them. i dont understand all the talk people say about harleys being junk, a lot of times when i read those statements they are from guys who don't have and never rode a harley, or haven't had 1 since they were made poorly. there was a time they were made poorly when they were owned by an outside company but not anymore. a lot of the things people say about them are old quotes that became gospel somehow like when people say ford found on road dead, or fix or repair daily. i can say i know many people that own harleys, my uncle has had a 2003 heritage softail and not had any issues with it. yes in 2017 the new motor had some issues, that happens just about everytime a company introduces new technology. maybe this comment was more for the main thread and i apologize for my long windedness lol, but i am a motorcycle enthusiasts, i am not all about the brand, if i see something nice and its good i will get it, heck i was considering a goldwing but i didnt like how u look like you're riding a big scooter on it lol, i also didn't like how they reduced the space, and i'm not crazy about the way the side bags open, i don't like when they open sideways like that. i considered the venture from yamaha but said if i'ma go air cooled i'ma go american lol. like i said my test was on to 2018's as i wanted that blue both had, i have not rode the 19's, but also pay attention to the little things when u buy, that new infotainment system harley has is pretty nice, i also like how i can be at a stop on my street glide, turn and open my bags by flipping a latch get my water out n toss it back in and go, also the quick release is nice, just turning knobs like the chieftain used to be, but it seems that they went to a bolt setup now, again i haven't seen that in person, just on videos and how guys have described it. i was also a little disappointed to see that indian gave a new model chieftain but basically the only thing that changed was the look and some small things like ride mode which seems to be nice, and also the rear cylinder thing harley has had for a few years now. i was surprised they didn't change the motor, or at least put the bigger one in it like harley does, for instance if u get a special now u get the 114 in it. i gotta say the Milwaukee 8 motors are nice. there is a guy on here matt laidlaw, u should check out his vids, he's at laidlaws harley in cali and he is very informative about harleys, the motors etc, i really get a lot of knowledge there, and i find that i sometimes know more than the guys in the dealerships i go to thanks to him lol, but he gives u the good the bad and the ugly. again good luck and be sure to let us know what u decided on, i'm about 2 go ride my SG now lol.

I like to play sportsbut even at a young age I understood that it is pointless to be a fan of any corporation sport of any sort. People know all their names all their statspeople that they've been with and stuff that they have posted on Twitter they were clothes that is sponsored by them and when people like Kobe Bryant pass away there is millions and millions of dollars spent to have a "proper funeral" on film and all source media. My question is what about the people in the world fighting for their lives getting shot at how much money do you think they make?meanwhile you have people over here throwing a ball around getting paid millions and millions and millions and millions of dollars every year.if you was to take all of the professional sports players in America and take all of their money and put it in a bowl and evenly distributed to every citizen in the United States they would never be any poverty. You're literally a fan of an agenda that is designed to take your money, entertain you, and keep your time. 30 years is a long time sitting in front of a TV getting riled up over somebody playing a game making more money in that one game than you will your entire life. While you got to go to a job in clock in these people get to play a game and make way more money. Does this logic makes sense to you. granted whenever baseball was first a thing in United States all those players couldn't make a living off of just playing baseball they had to have actual jobs to in order to survive. people are just so numb and dumb now that they could allow our society and our government to do this type of stuff. These people shouldn't be idolized or paid millions of dollars. They are playing a sport. They don't work.

I dont know why people like you get so emotionaly butt-hurt about other brands. Its the competitive nature of manufacturing that perpeturates inovation and adaptation, which in the long run makes the product better on both sides. Who gives a shit who's design came first. It's a motorcycle. It has 2 wheels, and an engine which are all designed on computers now-a-days anyway.
