Hi Juan, I wanted to let you know how much I have appreciated getting to know you and about all the awesome things you do and are involved with through your RU-vid channel. You and I are very much alike and I think we would be good friends if we ever met. I was a senior captain for the Washington State Ferries and am now retired. I really enjoy your aviation videos and hearing about your job. Dealing with the FAA or the USCG sounds very similar and being a competent officer of any passenger hauling device be it an airplane or a ferry is not an easy task. I also have been riding dirt bikes since I was 10 which was 55 years ago for me. I just picked a 2022 Husqvarna TE250i after riding a 2003 KTM 525 EXC for the last 19 years so your dirt bike videos are especially interesting and informative. To top it all off you have fought through your health situation, never complaining, and have successfully been declared “fit for duty” so you could return to the job you obviously have such love and respect for. You are an inspiration to me and to many others I’m sure. I can just tell that you and I could talk for hours about bike setup, navigation, being a licensed officer and exemplifying the American dream. Thank you for being an example of a first class American, father and all around cool guy. Your friend Ed
Great point about the Idaho OHV stickers, I wouldn't have thought about that but 12 bucks heck yes! I have done the same in Oregon where you can get their stickers at any dealer for 10 bucks.
Juan, I am extremely pleased to see you riding a real dirt bike. Still cannot believe that you rode the Rubicon with a street bike; wow! Thanks for your coverage of the Oroville debacle, and the flying information. If you ever get ready to sell the Mighty Luscombe, I might have a Sonex that you might be interested in? Thanks again for all you programs!
I actually ride from 2,500 feet near Murphy up to 10,400 feet on Railroad Ridge on the north end of the White Clouds. Idaho trails are for sure tough to beat..!! Glad I live here!
Thank you again for taking me along..Just picked up an iMac and trying to figure out how to use the mouse but the display of videos like yours make it worth it..I can ride my recliner in Bangkok and still enjoy the ride...hehe
Juan long time subscriber who enjoys your videos, your right about Idaho I did AMA Dist 37 Mex2Can in 2k1 with Larry Counts and Dave Hutchens which went from Tecate Mex to East Port Canada 2500 miles of dirt covering 4 states. Idaho was the best espesially in the Bitterroots and in pan handle. We had group of KTM riders from Oregon who were bent on having all riders finishing, true camaraderie. It took 2 KTMs and a Yamaha for me to make it but it was an awesome adventure. Your making memories that will last a life time. Thanks for sharing, your video brought back some of mine.
You should try snowbiking. Your 300 TPI would be a nice bike with a snowbike kit! Simply a new experience of bike riding in the snow. Timbersled snowbike kit factory is located in Idaho. Greetings from a snowbike rider in Sweden 😊
I live in challis and ride all the trails in your video. I was born and raised hear and know exactly how lucky I am to ride such awesome country. I'd love to ride with you if your ever up hear again. A lot of local guys clear the trails in June. It's very hard work and we're always looking for volunteers. So sped the word.lol
I have a 2018 250 TPI and it's the best bike I have ever owned. I've ridden the 300 TPI and carb versions and am faster on almost every kind of terrain on my 250! My son has the 250 XCF W and it is a really impressive bike on its own but I still love the 2 strokes. Need to ride the 250 TPI on the pipe and be in the right gear in comparison to the 300 but it feels lighter for some reason. Great bikes all around! KTM really covers their bikes as we. Had a small problem with my bike at around 25 hours and KTM took care of the whole thing! Love a company I can depend on when you need them!
great video, watched it till the end, Idaho looks amazing! How many miles did you make in 5 days? What is the range on full tank on that tpi bike? Sweet bike btw!
Between the bush flying and the trail riding both horse or dirt bike I’m moving to Idaho! I’m serious too. Hope to be living there in the next two to three years. It’s got it all for me! Cool video. I have a KTM 300 2stroke 2014 😆👍
Great vid. I think I need to get to ID. Couple tips. If you make the switch to mousse you can eliminate the weight of the tube and the tools. You will love Giant loop bags.
Ya so efi is actually more water resistant than a carb as it is pressurized. That is up until you get water in the tank and in the pump and downstream than you have more of a problem than a carb. 2 self tuning these systems are very dumb as far as self tuning but still a few stop and start cycles are easier than re jetting for most people. Tublis and some good trials type tires would be my recumdation for your next purchase. Also get a chainsaw on your bike I like your ohv advocacy approach to your videos but leading by example with a saw and a trials Tire would help even more.
Idaho, a magic place for the outdoorsmen. I was there when they offered landing places for our aircraft even into wilderness areas (Chamberlain Basin). If memory serves me there was one called Voodoo. High elevation and one-way. Like I say, magic place. bp
Very nice info. However the Idaho trail sticker is not Federal it is all State of Idaho. The sticker is a excellent idea and it allows the state, who cleans off bikes, to clean hundreds and hundreds of miles a year. The forest service also cleans trails but they are a old and archaic institution and still only use foot or horseback and the cost of cleaning federally per mile is many times hiigher than cost per mile for the state. Wouldn't it be nice if the Fed's would sub to the state so that more trails could be opened up each year? Many thanks to our fellow riders and clubs who also do much trail cleaning yearly. I recently met a rider who said he and his pals spend 6 weeks every spring cleaning trails. Thats dedication. If your riding on trails the sticker is required.
great video i live in tendoy idaho half of the year and the rest in Calif. love rinding in both states. I would love to try some of the trails you've ridden!
I guess you were fortunate you didn't suck in enough water to bend the connecting rod or destroy the piston. I'm sure it was just idling when it went over, not sucking in too much water. Or did you hit the kill button or turn the switch off?
Note that the spark plug they use for the a 300 with a carb is actually the best plug to use in the TPI check out Slavens racing for a great tip on why not to use the stock plug.
Hey how do you get OHV maps on Avenza? Was looking around Victor area for some trails. Being from Utah I'd like to take a weekend and make it up there, it would be nice to find some trails so I'm not up there driving around with my head cut off. Great video by the way, I wish more people would make bike/riding videos like you do! Thanks
Would love to see a comparison video between the 2 stroke and your 350 excf in regards to riding trails in Idaho. Both those bikes are at the top of my need to purchase list.
Yup. It's a certifiable fact that somewhere out there is a stump patiently waiting for you to deposit your radiator against it. Ride long enough and it will happen.
I dislike running Radiator braces and rigid guards on the KTM/Husky’s. I’ve found that the radiators like to flex and move around. The last set of rad braces on my Husky 300TE did more damage to the radiator than if they haven’t been on. The brace bent in to radiator, preventing the radiator from moving. But I do run a protective shroud to keep sticks from poking in to radiator.
You've got 7 years on me, and I've been on an ATV for over 20 years now. Last time I rode my old KDX220R was over 10 years ago, and it kicked my butt. Sold it, and haven't missed it yet. 4-wheels are just 100x easier on the body, especially in the rocky, root-ridden Northeastern USA.
You don't stop riding because you get old. You get old because you stop riding! I'll be 50 next year, and I've been riding every week for the past 23 years with plenty of back problems in recent years, but I stretch and strengthen during the week and it gets better and better. Don't give up...you can fix your body, and without surgery most of the time!
With no real places to ride in MA, the decision was easy for me. The ATV can also be used as a tractor - plowing snow, skidding trees, etc.. That's been it's main job the past 5 years. Looking into getting a paramotor, since off-roading is nearly dead around here. Breaks my heart, since I grew up riding off-road and still love it, but getting chased by the police in my 40's gets a bit old (as do the fines ...). Only legal places to ride are maybe 3 state forests in the entire state, each over 75 miles from my home. Each one has a maximum of 10 miles of rocky, root-infested trails that will make your kidneys bleed. You can see everything in an hour, or less. State expects us to pay $40 biannually to ride these 3 places (and pay still, even if you don't ever leave your own property!). It's a total joke.
Love your videos just wanted to let you know it’s because of your videos that I went out and got myself a brand new KTM tpi six day edition. Can I do more videos on the bike
Juan: I'm guessing, but others may confirm it because I did identify with the music track at the opening of this posting. The expose about your off-road motorcycle while being interesting, yet it didn't really spark my interest. I reside on the mostly flatlands of Indiana, and there're trails in my community, but they are mostly for joggers and bicyclists. In fact, the trail system is quite extensive and is on the increase all of the time. It's amazing what can be accomplished with a narrow strip of asphalt pavement. Getting back to the music: the song you uploaded (there wasn't any credit graphic) reminded me a whole lot of the theme from the PBS TV (and CREATE Channel) 'The Woodwright Shop, with Roy Underhill. 🤣Nice outtake there! Man, I need to get my butt out to ID! Looks like 180° opposite from where I'm at in MA, as far as OHV use is concerned. MA demands payment for NOTHING, while bending over backwards AND spending MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars, on NON motorized recreation ... all while COMPLETELY BANNING motorized recreation! It's infuriating ... but I digress. What a BEAUTIFUL area out there in ID!! LOVE that bike, too! I was super-nervous buying an EFI Polaris Sportsman 800 back in '05, but over the years it's proven to be as reliable as a stone ax. In 13 years, I haven't had so much as a hiccup in the fuel injection system, and I've sunk this thing right to the bars many times! It's got a pretty good snorkel system on it, so never filled the box up - not yet, anyway, hahaha! That said, I haven't really REALLY ridden it in over 5 years - it's been a tractor the past 5; plowing snow, skidding lumber, moving trailers and such. After seeing this, I need to RIDE this thing! I hate MA ... 😞 Great vid, and thanks for the review on the Katoom! 👍👍 😎
I just found out this information. Did you know the TPI KTM was never designed to be a faster bike than the carb bikes. It wasn't built for the USA and was never intended to be sold here until everyone went crazy about them. They are made so they can be street legal in several nations in Europe. They are actually restricted with a catalytic type exhaust and throttle stop. After the demand, they put regular exhaust and removed the throttle stops and sold a limited number to the USA. It's still considered the same as a carb bike in the USA. It doesn't pass any type of emmisions here.
I have the exact in reach. I have paper and PDF of vehicle usage maps. How did you get the delorme and the PDF to jive? Avenza app? Please advise. Thanks
Sweet! Thanks for the info. Good info all the way around.thankfully it wasn't a salt water dunk. If the moisture proof connections did their job there will not be any little electrical gremlins after a year or so. I'll be interested in this over time. Fly safe, have fun.
Hi Juan. I really enjoy your videos and have been a subscriber for about a year now. I'm in the SF bay area, and I've been riding a 350exc for a couple years now and will be buying a 2020 XCW TPI very soon. I don't need a lot of power as I'm 52 yrs old "C" rider and ride solo much of the time. I'd rather have not enough power than too much. What would you recommend 250 or 300? Also, if you were going to buy another XCW, would you get another 300 or step down to a 250?
If you are interested Dart and many friend will be at Middlegate station March 23 thru 31 for the Gathering at the pony express station. please share.. Cheers
I have a CB500X Rally RAID and I still ride. Not sure I’d do single track in ID though. But then, I won’t do single track as it causes too much damage. I stick to two track. Juan used to, but he’s into more serious stuff now. Not sure why.
I've plated my '94 then '05 and '17 currently .....In Ont till '10 and now in BC. Easy peasy walked in and walked out with the coveted street plate for all of them ....But a true Transport Canada approved 300 would be killer...they likely could not build them fast enough hahahaha
I live in the Roseville area. I’m familiar with GV (I know where Sierra Motor Sports is). Is the bike red sticker or green sticker? Good videos by the way. 👍
