Shop for the new 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata: cargur.us/rWTVp
Driving the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata reminds Chris Wardlaw of taking a spin in a street-legal go-kart. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car is a sports car distilled to the most critical pieces. A 6-speed manual transmission is available for peak driver enjoyment, but a 6-speed automatic is also offered for drivers who spend more time sitting in traffic.
The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine enjoys 26 more horsepower than last year, now good for 181 total horses. Torque is also up, albeit only 3 pound-feet, for a total of 151 lb-ft. The engine’s redline has also been raised 700 rpm. Altogether, these changes mean the Miata can pull confidently at any speed between 35 and 75 miles per hour.
In the folding-metal-roofed Miata RF, storage space is at a premium. The 4.5 cubic-feet of trunk space is enough to swallow a roll-aboard suitcase (and a little more), but this car isn’t for folks who need lots of space on a long road trip.
Mazda Connect in the MX-5 features a 7-inch touchscreen with a rotary controller and steering-wheel controls, but no Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto. Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Institute for Highway Safety have tested the Miata, and despite the cars collision-avoidance technology, this isn’t the ideal car to be driving if an accident occurs.
With pricing starting at $25,730, the Miata can offer a lot of smiles for relatively few dollars. For more information, read Chris’s full review on CarGurus: cargur.us/rWTTr
