@@SK-tx7rs unfortunately MG always pushes you to the rear of the queue on warranty work and the 7 year warranty is no help if you break down away from an MG service centre as there roadside service does not cover anything major. I found this out through persomal experience when a spark plug burned out and i was told to work it out for myself. If you own an MG3 i recommend putting Irridium spark plugs in as quickly as possible as the spark plugs that MG use are old technology
A better car than most people seem to expect (considering the money). It’s also the size a super-mini should be. Slowly but surely seem to be seeing more about.
Had mine 4 days now. The engine is fine, not the fastest, not the slowest, not the best on fuel, not the worst. It is very smooth and quiet however. Lovely steering, and great gearbox feel. Looks great in the ruby red I bought. Suspension is firm, but matches the sporty look. Interior is actually more premium than I thought, and VERY comfortable. My Exclusive Navi is well spec'd, and everything works. Incredible space for a small car. Unfortunately poor wind and tyre noise. Delivery mileage only, and I paid £9750, how can anyone complain at that ?
@@harmony3395 I have the Exclusive Navi. I bought a pre reg one for £9750. Order the same car from the dealer and it is £13,600. If you are prepared to travel to get it, there are bargains to be had. The range has now changed, and the only two available models are the Excite and the Exclusive Navi. It's far from perfect, but great value for money, and much better than the price would indicate
@Vwguy 2020 I sold mine after 18 months. It is a very good car for the money, but you have to remember it is a budget priced car. It is quite comfortable and reasonably refined, so long journeys aren’t a problem. First gear and reverse wine a bit, and the first few hundred yards when it is cold isn't great. The gear box also crunches when put in reverse. If you can live with those few flaws you should be OK
@@watchalot919 thank you for your reply :) I’m testing one tomorrow, an Exclusive Nav, I’m concerned about the lack of power that everyone mentions. I’m not a fast driver, but I do like to nip out of junctions quickly and dart about. Hopefully it’s enough. Did you sell for something quicker?
I just don't understand the moaning about the engine, yes it's slow and can catch you out on a hill if someone pulls out on you but I bought one as a pool car for my boys to drive. It's incredibly cheap to insure for young drivers and I know it's not the sort of engine that would encourage them to "push on". A sensible car to build up the no claims bonus on.
Yes, the group four insurance (on the previous model, this one is in group seven) is a real bonus. The reason I bought my wife's car, which is a 2014 model that Matt drove last month, is because she was learning to drive and it was cheap to insure. The lack of torque is an issue if you drive lots of turbocharged cars, but if you haven't even driven anything powerful before, it is far less of a problem, and it is a good car to build up the NCB!
I just think the chassis is good enough to take a much better engine, and make a proper hot hatch. This engine is great for new drivers and low insurance but others will want more, which it would be capable of giving.
@@furiousdriving, yes, the chassis is certainly good enough for more power, hence the 170 bhp supercharged version produced by Knight Industries of Staffordshire!
This country is full of brand snobs and however you try and dress it up it's no different to the Chinese phone I own ,I got it cheap and it does a job and does it adequately. Chinese MG is at the same place companies like Hyundai were 20 year ago and just need to build a reputation and maybe then build a MG3 i30N
Wow, amazing little car. If they sold these in the US I would be willing to own something newer than 1990. That simple, unfettered fun factor I thought was 30 years lost appears present in this car.
Now who could that Tweed Jacket ensconced arm belong to at 3:43? Hmm, let me think..... Love Matt's enthusiastic reviewing style! MG addressed a lot of the issues raised by reviewers of the pre-facelift model, except the big one that every reviewer complained about!
I just got one of these as a courtesy car. Not bad TBH. The steering is actually very nice. It reminds me of a decent late 90's hatch - something like a Mk1 Fiat Punto in many ways (give or take a touchscreen). Clearly built down to a price but not as bland as some. Deserves a better engine. A year old Mazda 2 is probably a better buy but a good effort
What a review on this MG,I do like the colour of it,with alloy wheels it suits against the yellow,it drives alright but it would be better off with a turbo.
Let's put the performance into perspective...Seat sell an Ibiza 1.0 MPI FR which is alot more than these with a measly 79hp that does 0 to 62 in 14.7 secs...the MG3 would annihilate one of those, and if you've driven a new 1.4 litre 74hp 1.4 litre Corsa one of those too. Perhaps the reviewer needs to drive more low powered, base engine superminis to compare with. In fact...let's get that Tempra SW td he was driving in a drag race with this...the MG3 would wipe the floor with it off the line and I bet stay with it mid range, and the guy kept going on about how good the Tempra's performance was. Let's have some perspective
Love the channel and your content, my only gripe is the camera angle you use. So many RU-vidr’s make the the same mistake, I want to see the dashboard and you driving but not the whole video staring at the presenter. Other than that all good 👍
This new mg3 looks good with no turbo less to go wrong or fail i would dump the factory touchscreen for an after market double din kenwwood .7 year warranty sticker on back window.
that's what I thought - Turbos are not cheap to replace if they fail and they do fail quite a lot - I know people who have VW with twin turbos that cost about a third of the price of this MG to replace - crazy
Never heard of this new M.G. brand before, thanks for the video! Yes, it doesn't look that bad compared to other cars in that class. Maybe they will revive Rover in a similar way one day? I mean, that City Rover (also never heard of that one before you did a video about it) is sort of a sad ending for that grand old brand ...
Rover technically still “lives on” as the Roewe brand in china, also part of shanghai. For a while they made the original 75 until they moved onto other newer stuff. Apparently the new MG electric estate car due to be sold in the UK is a rebadged Roewe.
The rights to the Rover brand belongs to Land Rover, and Jaguar Land Rover already has what is basically a luxury saloon brand so i dont think they would revive it any time soon as much as i want it to be
Jacob Thompson They also feel the same so I’m not complaining. You could buy 3 of these for the price of the Audi so it’s not a fair comparison anyway. Well done MG (Motor UK)
With a little turbo would be a great little car, can it be remapped possibly? The Chinese owners need to up their game, and make MG a great car again. The Koreans have managed it with their cars now.
the volume going back up to a medium level is fine by me. the amount of cars I've been in where the volume is so low that all you hear is the faint "tss tss tss" of unattenuated dash-mounted tweeters horn-loading off the windscreen, and the driver claims it's "background music" smh...
Does the drivers seat raise and lower ? .... It looks like it's a low position and not set up to rest your right arm on the window ledge, and maybe if the seat was fully raised, it would be far too high for your arm to rest on the door card and with no central armrest, it looks like a heads or tails scenario as to what position you sit !! .....
I like what they have done to the front end and the interior, apart from the plastic door cards . But the back end and side profile still looks awkward and pudgey to me. Sort of reminds me of an Austin Maestro with a wider C pillar.
Just as I asked earlier would u upload another video about the rover 214. I know ur mate had sold it on to was it the mechanic who put the gearbox into it? Will u do a drive review of it plz?
the mechanic decided not to keep it as he was offered 2 other cars and had no space (poor Rover keeps on getting that) Im in touch with the new owner who's a young retro fan and dailying it but he's about 2 counties away so I will do a follow up but as its now a couple of hours away Ill have to wait until Im heading that way
Ed Gimson They’re the only mobile phone company to flat out deny the FBI access to people’s phones. They definitely take privacy far more seriously than Google
Not really as when they go wrong, that will be £1200 pounds sir to replace and they will go wrong, my old Clio 1.2 turbo only lasted 70 thousand miles before it went, a supercharger is a much better solution
furiousdriving That is a real shame. If they could get do something to address the engine then they could have a real winner on their hands. May be there will be an MG3 EV?
MG needs to put the 1 litre 3 cylinder turbo engine in the MG3-you know like the 1 litre 3 cylinder turbo engine in the Ford Fiesta that most reviewers say is gutless and sounds like a bag of nails when pushed hard-mmmmmm that would really improve things
furiousdriving I owned a mark one MG6 for 5 years and loved it.My wife then bought a mark one MG3 and every time I drove it-it put a smile on my face.So a couple of weeks ago I bought a 6 month old laser blue excite and absolutely love it.Part exchanged the MG6 and paid £4995 for the MG3 which had only done 3000 miles-now that really is a bargain!!!!
I will be honest, if it was badged as a Morris or maybe an Austin I would love it, it fits as either Morris or Austin, but it surely should not be a MG, I am sorry but when you think of an MG you think of being sporty. That 1.5L engine sounded as horrible as the 1.5L that was in my 86 Hyundai Excel that I had and just like this MG it too could not get out of its own way. Well at least you did a good job on the video and trying to defend this poor little MG. Don't get me wrong its a nice city car that should not have the MG badge on it.
No android auto or satnav is the only thing putting me off. Id rather it didnt have a screen, a single din with Bluetooth would be better than a screen that's just there mocking you for not being able to use it
I just can’t warm to this car even though objectively it’s a good enough car. It’s all to do with that badge that evokes sporting cars, MG, MGB, MGF, even the MG metro/Montego turbos.
@@advancelast1740 The MG you remember sadly doesn't exist any more. Look past the rose tinted specs and pain of a lost British marque and this is a pretty good car for the money. I'm not ecstatic about adding to the already swollen Chinese economy, but buying British simply isn't an option unless you want a low volume sports car.
Sad to see MG ‘now being marketed as this budget car brand now.The Chinese owners don’t seem to know how to market MG they miss the point of that MG was a sports/performance brand if they own the rights to some of the other BL brands why don’t they market the budget end as Austin’s or Morris and have a top of the range MG performance model look at the success that BMW have had with the Mini brand. Also why was there no replacement for the MGF?
I'm still not convinced, though the interior is very German looking. So I guess that's what the masses want. Some deals on insurance and the 17 year olds and grannies will queue for this.
My feelings for this Car, Well, if you could guarantee servicing and spares for the next 10 years, and you need just basic transport, then it may be for you. Only thing is, when you get bored of it in 3 years, you’re gonna get scrap value for it because it’s NOT an MG, just a badge the Chinese bought , British people are not stupid, they will try to buy cars that will at least hold a bit of resale value, but not convinced that this brand will sell in any significant amounts in the Uk , saw a couple of years ago in the press only 6 MG 6’ s were sold in one month here in the UK, These cars do very well in China, I think the Parent company would do better marketing their products in other Asian Countries where the Car is just transport, Not to us in Britain, who most class their Cars as status symbols. Never seen these Cars being marketed anywhere other than China or UK, Are they ??? On a further note,BMW have invested heavily in China, who knows, with a bit of effort, and a bit of Western guidance, China could produce some of the Worlds best cars, as long as they don’t give the Stupid names like Rising Sun, Hidden Sausage, or, a Model for the Ladies, Red River ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Best Wishes from UK to the World Oh yes, Stop Eating Them Fucking Dogs !!! My Chinese Friends 👫
it is not an improved car. it is a completely new car engineered in China by a Chinese company. Not a single British engineer took part in building this car, and not a single part of any existing MG was used. Besides the badge there is absolutely nothing British about it.
Well, according to the MG website: "Led by European Advanced Design Director, Carl Gotham, the UK team is responsible for the interior and exterior design of all MG products across the globe." The pre-facelift MG3 was designed by Tony Williams-Kenny and his team at Longbridge, using many of the design and engineering team that worked on the last range of MG saloons for MG Rover.
I mean this in the nicest possible way. Printed tartan plastic panel to emphasise the Britishness? What? It's a Chinese car. Also, I may be wrong but don't Android phones outsell Apple phones about 3-1? It is just another cheap, plastic hatchback with an evocative badge. Top marks for enthusiasm though. Cheers.
Seems you get alot of car for a great price, some 20k cars dont have the extras this has. So the trims hard, I dont drive down the road feelin the trim, it still looks nice. There is alot said about the engine being underpowered, not really, it pulls well enough.
Intresting points about the engine, Cool Thing with the Engine though it's a Chain Driven. Which I prefer in so many ways, Quite like the Punto Styling at the back as well, The lack of power wouldn't bother me eaither. I really dont get all these cars now boasting a 1 litre 3 cylinder petrol engine but has to have a Turbo to boost the extra power, Surely alot more to go wrong compared to a Naturally Asperated 16 Valve Power unit? It's a shame they dont do a 1.6 version of this because I think it would just about be perfect. And as for the Android Auto I dont even have the slightest idea what that even does so it's no huge loss. I am not really for one to have gadgets in cars. I always say, Keep it simple and you will not go far wrong. My most advanced car I proberly have at the moment Is a Daewoo Nexia Glxi auto. Pretty Advanced on Features for 1996 but still Simple enough By today's standards! If you ever fancied doing a Review of it I would be more than happy for you too. Keep up the fantastic videos 👍
I think its quite impressive how they managed to get a measly 90hp out of that 1.5, it shouldn't really need a turbo if it was done right. I mean vauxhall were getting the best part of 115hp from a naturally aspirated 1.6 10 years ago.
105bhp for this MG3 from the 1.5 engine. 0-60 in 10.4 seconds & max 108mph. Sounds OK, but not enough power low down according to virtually every review I've seen.
We have the 2016 model of the MG3 LUX and its a great car for the money you get a lot compared to the competition at the time, my only gripe about the car would be road/wheel noise, it could probably be helped with different tyres maybe, also how you keep having to unlock the boot separately even if the cars open, then like mentioned the radio not keeping your audio level to what you last set it too before you turned the car off, again these are all very minor things which at this price point I shouldn't be moaning about lol,Would have been nice if the offered a "Turbo" variant in the 2019 line up as I've seen quite a few people ask about adding a turbo to theirs.
Quite honestly it's just a very generic modern styled car, pretty much everything has the same styling cues now, and it already is starting to look dated.
$15990 on the road for the base model here in Australia ,$17990 for the Excite, not bad but haven't seen many so not sure how well they are selling..nice video.
Come on you guys...BMC used to stick an extra carburettor on a crummy Austin or Morris and call it an MG. The MG Magnette Farina was a bloated old fashioned joke. Traditions must be upheld !
No Android Auto but serves you right for not having an iPhone...? Excuse me!!! Why would I want to go back to having a phone which after 13 major software versions still restricts what the user can do with their own phone, especially when it comes to file storage / management and the audio / music side of things (ironically what were the two main features of the iPod!)
Driven one as a test drive I did not feel very safe I found the gear stick was too low down for me and it just had no pull off speed, also the garage wanted way too much a month for it, I could of bought a Toyota Yaris for £20 more a month and I would of got a much more nicer car, I genuinely prefer driving my mums Peugeot 108 if I have to drive a manual car (I prefer autos lol)
