BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE AN MG3 FROM OSV: bit.ly/2SXnmb3
The MG brand's improved MG3 supermini is a sporty value-orientated proposition that now boasts a smarter look and a longer warranty.
The MG3 is a supermini you probably won't have considered. Yet it's fun to drive, practical to own and vastly more affordable than the conventional choices in this segment. If you don't need class-leading efficiency and you're prepared to forgive a few rough edges in return for the big savings on offer, then in this improved form, it could rank as a very clever choice.
Background
There's something about the two letters 'MG' that strikes a chord in the British consciousness. The brand named after 'Morris Garages' way back in 1924 has been a part of our automotive heritage for nearly a century. And still they come: take this car, the MG3 supermini.
As with this model's MG GS Crossover stablemate, it's true to say that this car is properly British-developed, with its styling and drive dynamics created by many of the same talented folk who at the turn of the century brought us the surprisingly satisfying MG ZR, ZS and ZT family performance models. Chinese manufacturing clout also means the brand can bring this Fiesta-sized supermini to market for up to 30% less than obvious rivals. Which leaves MG able to claim what they see as an unbeatable combination of fun and value for this car. Does it deliver that in this revised guise? Let's find out.
Driving Experience
As usual with the MG3, the only engine option is a 1.5-litre petrol unit that MG owners SAIC bought in from GM, though a little compensation comes with the news that it has in more recent times been brought up to cleaner Euro6 standards and develops a healthy 105bhp, substantially more than most direct rivals can offer. That means a reasonable turn of speed, rest to sixty two achievable in 10.4s en route to a 108mph top speed. Though it's true that most of this car is Chinese, many of the bits that really matter are British through and through - an observation especially true when it comes to the elements concerned with ride and handling. There are suppler-riding cars in this class and more sportily-suspended ones, but few models of this kind that I can think of achieve a better combination of both over good roads and bad. Which for a first attempt in this segment, is quite an astonishing achievement for the Longbridge-based development team given that the class in question contains models of the talent of Ford's Fiesta.
Body roll is brilliantly controlled, grip is prodigious and there's better feedback through the steering than in most Gtis we've driven, primarily perhaps because modern era electric steering hasn't made it to MG yet. The downside of that is that the helm is heavy during parking manoeuvres in the kind of urban environment where the option of an automatic gearbox would be nice to have.
Design and Build
The main change to this revised MG3 is revised exterior front end styling which adds what the brand calls a 'star-rider' grille. This frames the brand's famous octagonal logo. The company claims it's "a distinctive statement of modern British style designed to target young and style conscious buyers". Make of that what you will.
The interior will come as a welcome relief to anybody who's a bit baffled by the complexity and deep technology of many modern superminis. Climb out of a Peugeot 208, with its tablet computer style central infotainment system and, without being unduly blunt, it's very different. Still, the MG3 is tidy inside with seats that look and feel very Volkswagen. In the lightly upgraded cabin of this revised model, there are a few white touches around the stereo, on the steering wheel, the door pulls, handbrake and gear lever but aside from that, everything is uniformly grey. Sit in the back seats and you'll find the front seats are sculpted to improve leg room, while the rear headroom is genuinely impressive.

A tried and tested, naturally aspirated, chain driven engine sounds a great idea to me. When Suzuki were asked why they were putting such an engine in their new Jimny their answer was that the car had a predicted lifespan of 20 years. By inference a turbo engine would be unlikely to last that long. Keep It Simple.

What rot. The reason is Suzuki don't have the budget to spend on developing a new turbo engine.
@andyburns6496
@andyburns6496 5 лет назад
ELLIPSIS Turbo engines do not have the longevity of naturally aspirated engines: complexity is the enemy of reliability. If you want performance and economy then turbo is the way to go. If you want reliability and ease of maintenance keep it simple. My Skoda has a turbo TSI engine. Volkswagens TSI engine was turbo and supercharged and gave better performance but was fragile and unreliable. My point is if you are going to lease a car for 3 years then enjoy the benefits of a turbo charged engine. If you are the sort of buyer who wants this MG you will probably have a limited budget and will keep the car for 10 years or over. You won’t want expensive repair bills. Incidentally the Jimny’s engine has not effected the near universal praise of the the new Jimny. There are 10,000 people in the UK who have expressed an interest in the car yet only 1300 will reach the UK.

It won't break mid 30s.i rested alot ofcars last summer. I was in the market for a new estate, but also took the time to test a load of the smaller 3cly engines. They was all crap. All the dealers spoke of mid 60s. A quick flick through the long term mpg gage never broke 40. The only petrol car I seem hit 60 plus on average, was the Hyundai iconiq hybrid. It was crap to drive. And I didn't like the interior materials. But the dealer said this will do 70all day around town. I thought "oh yeah...". I had it for 2h, after ten mins I was getting 72mpg. So I spend the next 1h 50m seeing how bad I could get it. I drove it like I stole it, and was still getting low 60s. Still I bought a car that struggles to break 32mpg. But that's cos I can't control myself. I'm a child in a man's body. I know I should of got the iconiq, but I think I'd die of boredom. Back to 3cly. It's all BS. If you need all the mpg and don't want an iconiq, get anything with a Renault 1.5litre diesel in, or Fords 1.6d. Both are very good. Just I doubt you'll be able to give then away in 4 years time. Given the cost of diesel, and the current war on them.

Small correction of your review: The 1.5 litre engine was designed and built by SAIC rather than GM which designed the 1.0 litre turbo engine for the ZS SUV. All SAIC did was invest money in to the SGE as it is strictly a GM product. Cheers..

There is no mention here about the NSE engine being based on a GM design. www.aronline.co.uk/news/mg-news/news-a-talk-and-a-tour-at-mg-birmingham/ SMTC are known to base their engines on other designs though, i.e. the 1.9 litre diesel engine for the MG6 was based on the design of a Kunming Yunnei Power engine Cheers..

As an aside, the reason why China favours 1.5 litres and not 1.6 and above for their majority of engines in less expensive cars is that the Chinese government had good tax breaks for cars with 1.5 litres and less. It's nothing to do with vehicle emissions as China probably has the worst in that respect. www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/04/15/fords-new-engine-is-all-about-china.aspx

Has satnav, DAB, cruise, bluetooth, front and rear park sensors, climate control, keyless entry, push button start, half suede/leather seats, drivers seat armrest, x4 e/windows, e/mirrors, 17" alloys, privacy glass, LED headlights, front fogs....and a boot as big as a Ford Mondeos. List was 21k so 9k off. Its very refined, handles ok and pulls well. Would much much much much rather have one than a well specc'd MG3, or base to mid spec Fiesta/Corsa

The problem the MG3 and the others in the MG line up, are the seriously dated powertrains and the lack of any active safety kit whatsoever. You can't even spec AEB on any of its cars. With some small capacity turbo engines like all other cars and some updated tech, these would sell really well as they're stylish and the warranty is excellent.

Superb review with the information I actually want to see. Car looks great too for someone like me who is a very low mileage driver. My current car is a simple car, no turbo, manual gear box, petrol and has lasted 5 years so far from new without a single fault and been 100% dependable. I like a car that performs well by brute force rather than some over-complicated engine which you can't rely on and can lead to huge bills. The long warranty means not such a big issue anyway but I guess the simplicity of the car is why the warranty is so long. Personally I'm more interested in the ZS as a potential purchase.

E-PAS isn't necessary. Mechanical PAS is much preferred for much more direct positive feel through the steering wheel, and it's partly the reason why it would feel like a good drive around the twisties. Chain driven engines are now ubiquitous in many cars again as they are low maintenance compared to belt driven engines. Such a dumb comment. MG growing quickly from so few sales. No wonder they're 'growing fast.' Not very thought out points in this video. Do agree that this a decent car for the money.

Brand new from £9235 just putting it out there as it's easier than waiting for the price in the review. And it is VVT and this engine I'm sure, is not GM, that's another one, the GS, but just check. Partnership with apple and not Android is a pain in the Ass.

My dad bought one of these in 2013, and what an utter heap of junk. 21k miles stretched a timing chain, 52k miles stretched another timing chain. 54k miles gear selector cables snapped after repeated previous visits back to MG due to gear change problems. Plus a few other issues like an expansion bottle. We bought another in 2017, 11k miles went back for a loud gearbox whine, gearbox full of swarf and replaced. 15k miles, got to a roundabout went to pull away and no drive. It actually fractured a hole through the gearbox. Car was then returned. Buyers beware! Stay clear!

This is the same car (BM18 LAE) that the Planet Auto boys tested and loved, thrashing it around the Lake District! I enjoyed their review, but I think yours is probably the most thorough car review I've ever seen. Well done. And it seems the MG3 is now starting to get some more positive press, with serious reviewers looking beyond the "cheap Chinese crap" angle. Did you drive the pre-facelift version, and is their any significant difference apart from the styling and improved cabin quality?

I’m amazed that no automatic variant of the MG3 is available there, do many still buy manual cars in that class? They sell the things here in Australia too, but a base automatic (MG3 is auto only here) Mazda2 is A$1300 more than the MG. I don’t know about you, but I’d spend the extra. Would probably get $1300 extra when it’s time to sell.

It probably looks better than it is, the timing chain is a plus if the chain is a quality one, the rear drum brakes are a bit old fashioned but are a tried and tested system and as most of your braking is done on the front brakes anyway. The real down side is its resale value I have seen MGs in British Car Auctions and nobody wants them and when the trade bids on them it's usually around 50 per cent or less of the retail price at one year old, this is tragic so just be aware of deprecation and remember it's Chinese. I think that China bought MG because it was an iconic brand and gave it a head start with people but it needs to be a great car to maintain the brand names popularity.

@davidellis279
@davidellis279 5 лет назад
Martyn Morris. I take it you traded it in for another MG, if you had traded it in for another make I doubt you would have got anywhere near that amount, the motor trade is all smoke and mirrors with deals and discounts so if you didn't trade in for another MG then the dealer was under a lot of pressure from the manufacturer to shift cars and the only way to do that is to offer crazy discounts or very attractive trade in values to sweeten the deal and persuade you to buy. The retail price bears no resemblance to the price the Car Supermarkets pay for vehicles that the manufactures can't sell hence the massive difference in their prices and the main dealers.

An all new model based on the same new platform used in other SAIC cars will be due in a few years time which is why they have only done a mild facelift for the old MG3 model. The MG3 was possibly an NAC design which was used when SAIC took over the smaller company and inherited all of the IP that MG Rover had up to its demise.

The new Dacia Sandero that will probably arrive in may will wipe the floor with any competition in the budget segment. A high spec Sandero with automatic cvt transmission will be under 13000£, offer more space , better interior and larger touch screen console with wireless connectivity for both apple and Android auto. Just check dacia.co.uk on new Sandero! Great News!

One thing that I'm curious is the safety rating on euro NCAP... 3 stars maybe?
@shoutyshouty
@shoutyshouty 5 лет назад
Correct, there is no autonomous braking or lane departure warning so it cannot achieve the 5 star rating. This model does not have many changes to the structure apart from the new tailgate so it is unlikely to be submitted for a new NCAP test as it's quite expensive, so I've heard. Here is the NCAP test for the previously car though this is the second facelift (known as the Euro face) because the original MG3 built for China had a totally different front bumper: www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/3/7878 Cheers..

Some niggles, from a new owner of the middle-spec Excite. A work around was needed the minute I got it home: the aerial is too tall (I would say it is unfashionably tall) for my motorised garage door. Thankfully it's a standard screw-in arrangement and shorter accessory options are widely available. The transmission panel doesn't show what gear you are in (there's an indicator in the dash - not very intuitive in my opinion). Only the one interior light (centrally over the dash), and control is rudimentary. The audio system won't connect with my ipod via the usb input (there's the obligatory 'no guarantees about connectivity' caution in the owner's manual), and no straightforward audio jack to fall back on. Seat belt shoulder height not adjustable. Horn sounds like a child's toy. No coat hooks! On the other hand it is unquestionably a fun little car to drive ..

@shoutyshouty

The car is made from Chinese steel which does not have the lightness and strength of U.K steel as an example. This is why they need to use a thicker steel in order to achieve the same rigidity of its rivals. The engine is based on a cast iron block but again it won't have the advances that European and other Asian manufacturers have had. The K series was advanced for its time but sadly it came with flaws. There have been no reports of any NSE, NLE, N Series or Kavachi series (the latter 2 considered based off the original K series) engines having head gasket failures so it is a testament to SMTC and NAC before them that they have built a reliable engine from the get-go.
@spainter1985
@spainter1985 5 лет назад
I'm not convinced that's strictly accurate as the performance figures given the cars 105bhp suggest a kerb weight within the range of a more likely 1150-1300kg. Appreciate however it certainly isn't as advanced as similar European and Japanese/Korean cars in it's class but the warranty, finance deals and purchase price are hard to ignore if you just want a small car to pop to the shops. Amazing to think really that the old K series 1.4 produced similar power 15years ago :)
@shoutyshouty
@shoutyshouty 5 лет назад
Where did you find that value from? According to Euro NCAP the bigger ZS SUV doesn't weigh that much: www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/zs/29657 Admittedly SAIC in China like to point out the rigidity of the ZS but no such mention for the MG3. What do you make of that, if you will?
