Here in the US, people buy base (2-liter, 4-cylinder) Macans at roughly 8 to 1 (8 base Macans out of every 9 Macans sold). Why? because people want a Porsche but don't want to pay a lot more. Here, the Macan S costs USD 9k more than the Macan base, before options. That is not insignificant. I personally have test-driven numerous versions of both the Macan base and the Macan S, and quite frankly, I don't find that S to be that much better; in fact, I found the S to be disappointing, after owning a 462-hp Porsche. So when I decided I wanted to get a Macan, the base Macan became my choice after a lot of thinking about it. The base Macan is still, as you note, a very nice car to drive.
cba tiau the base Macan is a very nice car to drive. I said it so much whilst filming that I had to edit it out haha. It handles very well, especially because of the lighter engine in the 2.0. If someone is looking for a Porsche and they are not fussed about performance, it is definitely the engine to go for. Although I still feel that they should have put the 300bhp version of the EA888 engine inside the car. But Porsche have upgrades to sell 😂

This will probably surprise you but I traded my 2018 Macan GTS for a 2020 Taycan and then ordered a 2021 Macan 2.0 with all my fav options. Have owned 911, diesel Cayenne, the GTS, the Taycan, and now the 2021 Macan. You said it very well when you said it’s so “smooth”. The 2.0 is not a 0-60 car at 6.7 seconds. But it is the best handling, most comfortable SUV on the market. And, the 2.0 is very quiet, smooth and has plenty of power on the highway. The GTS was a loud gas guzzler. The 2.0 mileage numbers aren’t great but much better than the GTS. Some tips on options when ordering a Macan. Do not order the premium package because it includes a sunroof. The sunroof is 120+ lbs of glass that is sitting on top of your car, allowing noise and the suns heat to enter the car. No sunroof is better balanced car that is quieter and cooler. I then added noise and UV resistant glass, AC seats, full leather, Bose, surround view and lane change assist, side blade in color of car (white), beige interior (cooler in FL heat), 19” Macan sport wheels, LED PDLS headlights, power 14 way seats, entry and drive, and roof rails in black (incl black side pillars). The perfect Macan build and the perfect “trip” car.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I purchased Macan 2.0 2021 in all black exterior. It is definitely fast enough for daily driving especially in the city. I can't drive over 80km/s most of the time by the law. So it would be a huge waste if I order S or GTS for my daily use. Even though I really want a S. but 2.0 is the best choice for me in reality.
I've got the base. I live in a small country which means city driving, could very well afford the 3.0L (like you've mentioned the price ain't that big) but wont be able to fully utilize the capabilities. So i took the money I saved from the 3.0L version and spend it on options. 243hp compared to it's competitors ain't bad it is equivalent/better than a X3 30i M Sport or a GLC250. But i do agree as a Porsche should be faster. Too bad they have to de-tune the engine in this to sell the 3.0L
That lane keep assist button that you didn’t like (because it just made a noise and didn’t steer) is “standard” on all Macans so wouldn’t cost extra as you implied. You have to add the full approx £400 option to get it to steer within white lines. NB...if you do have the option, the self steering only works from approx 40 mph or faster. So, it could’ve actually been fitted but you weren’t going fast enough to get it to work!
Nice little review. Other reviews just complain the entire time about a car that is generally a wonderful car. I thought your reactions captured the overall package accurately and fairly.
Thank you for the very useful review, but personally I’m still thinking about getting the Macan or the Velar. Velar has more space in the back which is very important for me.
