What if a player A shoves player B, with only their hands, on the front face of player B's shoulder pads and player B falls to the ground because they are not paying attention in front of them?
This helps a little bit, but the examples given leave a HUGE hole in the middle for what would be legal or illegal. The only example given of a legal blindside block has the blocking player with his arms almost comically up in the air barely touching the opposing players, if at all. Surely there are more physical examples of legal blindside blocks. As you said, the rule outlaws “attacking” a player with “forcible contact”. My best guess is that this is intended to outlaw those plays where the blocker attempts to deliver a physically punishing blow. We have seen these obvious plays many times in the past, often on highlight reels and Top Plays lists. Those are clearly excessive, and I’m glad they’re being outlawed. All of the illegal examples in the video all fall into this category. But surely a blocker can still initiate some contact to push an opposing player off to the side somewhat to interrupt their stride and their path toward the ballcarrier, as long as it isn’t an attempt to strike the player in a damaging way. For instance, if a blocker comes from the blindside and pushes with extended hands an opposing player so that the opposing player stumbles sideways a little bit and is unable to keep his full speed up in chasing the ballcarrier, would this be considered an illegal blindside block? I’m talking about something where the pushing/impact would not come close to hurting the opposing player, and he may very well stay on his feet, but just have his stride interrupted enough that he’s taken out of the play. Or what about something like a hard pick in basketball? Can a blocker set their feet and hold their ground as a defender runs sideways and runs into the blocker, who is outside their field of vision. I’ve been picked that way in basketball at times where it’s quite jarring, but it was a legal pick. The force all came from my own momentum. The picker/blocker was not attacking or moving toward me at all, but was merely setting their feet and resisting being moved off the spot. Would this be legal on the football field?
exactly, football has gone soft, no facemask, cant tackle the kicker, no chopblock, cant grab the collarbone, no helmet to helmet hits, football is so soft with these rules
Thanks for the explanation. Does anyone know if the ilegal blind side block ruling is applied into the tackle box, or is it strictly an OPEN FIELD block? Could a blind side block be considered an open field block say if it's a run play with traps, or pulls etc ? i.e: A guard pulls on a run play and blind sides a (a) defensive end (b) linebacker in or outside the tackel box? - Thank you in advance.
Embarrassing. The worst is him saying that you can block but don't be too rough or that is now a penalty. It sucks that every time there is a big hit in football now everybody looks around for a flag. Play clean, play hard, and let the players hit. In my opinion this is a garbage rule that I would like taken out of the rule book as soon as possible.
Steven Birmingham That’s not what he’s saying. U clearly haven’t stepped foot on a football field and think football equipment will keep u 100% safe. I’ve been blindsided blocked before and it’s horrible. Good clean hits are applauded. But cheap helmet to helmet hits aren’t and I’m glad they are being taken out of the game. Clearly u don’t know who Aron Hernandez is or what CTE is. Grow sum balls, Put on some football pads and step on the field with me. Let me blindside u and see how quick you’ll want a flag. People wanna play football. They love the game. They wanna play for years. Constantly taking hits like this will significantly reduce ur career length and ur overall health
Ultimately Wicked - Here is my reply to you given point by point. 1) "That's not what he is saying" - That IS EXACTLY what he is saying! At 2:49 into the video he says "This block was legal in previous years, but starting in 2019 it is a foul." 2) "U clearly haven't stepped foot on a football field" - Incorrect. I wasn't a superstar, but I have played multiple years of organized padded tackle football. Mostly at Cornerback but also on Special Teams, both kickoff coverage and returns. 3) "think football equipment will keep you 100% safe" - I do not think that at all. If that were true then there would have never been an injury in the history of football so this is obviously not true. 4) "Good clean hits are applauded." - I agree with you. I love good clean hits in football. And all of the examples that were shown in this video that he classified as legal prior to this rule change to me are examples of good clean hits. Making it the blockers responsibility to determine if the defender is looking at him before initiating forcible contact puts an undue burden on the blocker and takes physicality out of the game. 5) "But cheap helmet to helmet hits aren't." - I agree with you. It is both dangerous and unsporting to intentionally hit helmet to helmet. That is not what this video is about, but we do agree on this point. 6) "Clearly u don't know who Aaron Hernandez is" - I do. In addition to the coverage on Sportscenter and the like, I have read in-depth articles on his story in both Sports Illustrated and ESPN the magazine. I also watched the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary about him. 7) "..don't know what CTE is" - Actually I do. I love football and I love statistics, so articles on CTE are quite interesting to me. 8) "Put on some football pads and step onto the field with me." - I would love to. Maybe if we both bring a few guys we could actually get a game going. 9) "Let me blindside you and see how quick you'll want a flag" - I would never let you blindside me, but if you caught me with what constituted a legal hit prior to this 2019 rule, I would consider it a clean hit. 10) "Constantly taking hits like this will significantly reduce ur career length and ur overall health" - On this point I agree with you. If you are constantly getting blown up because you don't have good field awareness of where potential blockers may be attacking you, perhaps football isn't the game for you. I await your response.
Steven Birmingham he’s right though. That hit at 2:50 is highly unnecessary. Look at 2:57. The fact that they didn’t see them was enough for them to break stride. And I’m a reciver. I don’t get hits like this. But when I was saftey I got blindsided helmet to helmet. People don’t understand there’s no need to hit high. Hospital passes piss me off to the max. Hitting the reciver before is has the ball isn’t allowed. But if ur going to, at least hit him low. A perfect example of that is Antonio brown and Vontez burfcit. He hit him high when he didn’t see him and before he caught the ball which was so unnecessary. That’s why before I cut or do a slant route, I look at the whole field as I cut, so I know where everyone is and I know wether to dive to the ground as I catch the ball and avoid a blindside hit, or if it’s safe to catch turn around and keep going. Or when i do a streak, before I turn around for that over the shoulder catch, I look where the defenders are before I focus on catching the ball. But back to what I was saying, hits like 2:50 are unnecessary and I’m glad they are being removed
First the targeting bs and now this? Everyone sign a waiver and understand you could get really hurt playing football. If we keep adding rules like this football is going to turn into soccer in the next 10 years!
when they made tackling the kicker a penalty or helmet hits a penalty, you knew football went soft, nothing should be illegal in tackling, its football
erick sanchez lmao yea I am a wr. U don’t know what’s it’s like. U probably just watch sports and not actually play. U just wanna rough sports for the sake of ur entertainment. And I’m gay for wanting to play a sport and actually having a future? Taking hits like that constantly will leave u in a mental hospital. I want to have a future and live my life after I retire. That’s what a real man wants. And other REAL MEN would respect that. But somebody making fun of another man for wanting to have a good future isn’t a man himself. He’s just a straight up Bitch.
exactly, when they made it a penalty to hit a quarterback during a slide you knew the game went soft, the QB is a player with the ball, you should be able to tackle him in any fashion
