2019 Rad Power Bikes RadMini Review - $1.5k

The 2019 Rad Power Bikes RadMini is the high-step version of a folding fat tire electric bike from Rad Power Bikes, reinforced frame with sturdy gussets, secure locking latches for both folding points, adjustable suspension fork with lockout. Powerful 750 watt Bafang rear hub motor with strong 48 volt battery allows for climbing or riding through soft terrain like sand, snow, or leaves, responsive 12-magnet cadence sensing assist as well as twist throttle for instant power with on-off button for safety. Very comfortable for a folding electric bike with smaller 20 inch wheel size, the fat knobby tires and adjustable suspension fork smooth out bumps, custom Kenda tires have K-Shield protection to reduce flats, alloy chain guard reduces drops and protects your pant leg, larger folding pedals feel solid. Fairly large and heavy compared to other non fat tire folding electric bikes, externally routed cables aren't as clean looking as the step-thru version from RAD, not sold through many stores so you may have to unbox or pay for setup, doesn't come with a rear rack or fenders by default, fairly basic charger.

I've been riding my 2018 Rad Mini as much as I can, using it to replace my car when possible, which is often. My only "complaint" is that it gets a ton of attention; People love this bike almost as much as I do!

Same here. I just got a 2019 Mini and people would stop and talk to me, touch it when I lock it up outside, etc. I had one homeless guy straight tell me if he saw it outside he'd steal it...

Bought a 2018 RadMini because of your previous review. Couldn’t be happier! Ride it daily with no issues to date. The bike is small (well, fairly - but not so “mini”) but bold which definitely draws some attention.

The tires are mini so it fits in your trunk. Full size tires won't fit. This bike also folds in half.

I love your reviews. What cracks me up is that you're obviously scarred from an incident where you turned one of these on and had the throttle rocked back and hurt yourself or damaged something. You mention it in every single video. There's an off switch for the throttle right next to it, to prevent exactly that!

Did alot of research on many of the folding fat tire bikes, almost went with the lectric xp, with the xp some had shipping issues as where I went to do research on this for some time.. I noticed that the review and customer service are better for these and have not read any bad reviews on them.. so I bought one today.. now waiting for it to ship and receive, I'm excited for my purchase even though I paid 600$ more you definitely get what you pay for bikes in general..

You asked the question if you can have either tire on either bike, You were told yes. I also asked this question via email, I was told I would have to order the tires separate and of course pay additional for the knobby tires because they do not make modifications pre shipment for bikes. Whats up !!
@Teamshmo
@Teamshmo 5 лет назад
You get knobby tires on this one and slicks on the step through. However, you can buy and use either on the bike. So if you have this regular mini you will get knobby tires but can buy and install the slick ones if you want.
@gnatgnutz7139
@gnatgnutz7139 5 лет назад
I just bought a used 2019 mini stepover. The guy had bought slicks and installed them. He gave me knobbies too. You have to get the larger inner tube (20×4.5) for slicks even though they have a smaller diameter. Go figure. The slick inner tubes are more oval shaped. Per rad bike support

On this battery icon since it goes by 20% increments, can't they program it to make each tick flash when it is half way through? Like 5 solid ticks means 100%, 4 solid and the fifth flashing means 90%, 4 solid ticks 80%, 3 solid 4th flashing 70% and so on?
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 5 лет назад
That's an amazing idea William! I don't think I've ever heard this suggested, but it's a great way to take 20% and make it 10% for more precision. Thanks for sharing that, I'll mention it and maybe they will also see your comment here :D

@@ElectricBikeReview Mike from Rad Power Bikes here... Thanks for the tip! Actually this functionality is already in place on all of our ebike models. Once the battery pack SOC is nearing depletion with 1 bar left on the meter, the last bar will begin flashing, similar to a traditional car low fuel icon. Around the same time the bar starts to flash, the maximum power available begins to slowly decrease, helping to extend the range and reduce the chances of running out of power before reaching riders destinations. The flashing is not programmed to function in the other capacity levels however, by design.

GREAT video. Pls. ask Mike if an upgrade to a more powerful motor and battery is possible. I'd like to have those installed predelivery. I'm looking for more torque for climbing steeper hills without needing to pedal. More speed is also a concern. Yes, I know there is a law about 20 mph max, but I'm looking for a bit more speed. That must be attainable. Suggestion: at the end of your videos, pls. put info as to how to contact Mike. You could give him and his business a free plug. Thnx.

OMG...want to remove hardware, better have high torque power tools. Took me 45 minutes to get two seat stay screws removed to install the $80 rear rack & another 30 minutes to put the new screws back it. Every screw has permanent lock-tite. Over 100 lbs of force to just crack them but they never became loose enough to just unscrew without constant force being applied. The down bar supports for the rack aren't wide enough between the wheel, I had to force them on & sit on it to get the screws in otherwise it popped off the mounting points. Must not be any quality assurance for accessories. I like the bike and the ride it's just so uncooperative to do anything besides riding it

I've no experience with folding bikes and just want to know the "upgradeability" of this particular RAD bike. Is the groupset similar to regular bikes? I mean if I ever get one, the first thing to go is the Shimano Tourney groupset (for something like Shimano 105 or SLX) & that mechanical disc brakes (for hydraulic).

@ThinkingMan206
@ThinkingMan206 5 лет назад
Yes! It rains ALL the time. Don’t even think about moving to the Pacific Northwest. Especially if you are a Californicator. 😉 I recently lived near Seattle for seven years. Of course it doesn’t rain all the time but locals prefer everyone else in the world to keep believing it does so they don’t move there. 😂 Some winters and summers are more overcast and rainy than other years. Sometimes less cloudy with more sun. That is simply the nature of Earth’s ever variable weather. I loved it when my non-sprinkler equipped front and back yards turned brown in the summer because then I did not need to mow as often. The grass would grow like crazy in the spring and fall. I travel for work so finding the grass almost a foot tall after a longer trip was always a shock.

Larger tires are always gonna be better. However, small tires are better for climbing hills. Small tires hit a rock and you'll just feel it more than you would with a larger tire. However, the mini tires are 20" with the large fat tires making them probably 23". That's still a decent size tire and not super small.

A few questions. 1.How long does the battery last if you use it every day and does it diminish during that time? 2.Do bike stores sell tires that will fit it or do I have to buy them from rad power bikes only? 3.What is the diameter of the seat post? I might like to add a lay-back seat like the below link to give me a bit more room. www.amazon.com/Black-Ops-Lay-Back-Seat-Post/dp/B00R6RL5W2 Thanks!
