So I have a 2020 limited but I live down South my dad lives in south Dakota and has had this issue (he has a 2019) but the issue only arises when there alot of snow weight in the bed and he tries going to off Rd 1 or 2 the weight makes the compressor work had non stop but he said in normal has never had a issue

Hey! Thanks for the video for the 5th Gen air ride. I'm researching currently if I want to get a new truck with air ride again. I've become a technician over the years dealing with the air ride system in my own truck, a 2014 Limited Ram EcoDiesel. Love the truck and air ride when it works, but when it doesn't... Anyways, your issue that I just witnessed is due to a lack of Nitrogen charge in your air ride. Normally the air ride system is a closed loop nitrogen charged pressurized transfer system (nitro tank storage to compressor to valve block to air bags and back). Over the course of time and automotive components and conditions being what they are, the inert and dry gas that should work in cold conditions escapes and is replenished by normal O2 (THANKS Dodge). When it doesn't have enough pressure to maintain the requested height it tries to draw in outside air. From there two things can happen: 1) the system draws in moist humid air and when the compressor runs it condenses on the delicate valving of the valve block causing bags to leak or riding on bump stops. And 2) the system pressure isn't enough to keep the truck up at any height and the compressor burns itself out trying make up the pressure difference. What you got was a warning that the compressor is overheating and shut down before the fuse pops. Put it in a warm garage or drive in warmer climate and this system works fine. Being part of the Northern climate you were taking about, I now perform my own Nitrogen purges annually to ensure the system doesn't have to draw outside air, and, I inspect for leaks from suspect areas like the rear air bags (easily replaceable). Aside from that I also have 12v heat trace pads wrapped around the compressor and valve block just in case I'm on a long drive and the system starts acting up again. The name of the game is moisture mitigation and keeping a healthy nitrogen charge. Not all that tough once you know, but man what a flawed system.. not designed for anywhere cold.. Again, thanks for your video!

Easily replaceable, yes. But at close to $1000 per bag, it's not very cost effective. I would go with a billstien setup, or even a fox 2.0 and get a more reliable and equally comfortable ride.

I was in a climate that had both cold and hot. I have since moved to a warm climate and I have had issues with the front end not leveling. I took it to the dealer and they recharged the nitro and said there's a leak somewhere in the line but they cant identify it. Any suggestions, I just started to have the same issue again after having it at the dealer 4 months ago.
@jasonmoore4372
@jasonmoore4372 2 года назад
@@erskaare the most common place for leaks to develop are the rear air bags, it's also the easiest place to check and easiest part to replace. Finding the front end lowering isnt a clue as to where the leak is coming from. You should remove the back wheels and lower the dust boots around the rear air bags and spray with soapy water to check for micro leaks. Next spray around the air manifold in behind the rear right airbag. There could be a loose fitting. Raise the vehicle up to its different levels and then shut everything off and listen all around the vehicle. My rear bags were leaking so bad once I could hear it. Doesn't mean your fronts couldn't be leaking but it less likely than the rear if none of it has ever been replaced. My rears leaked and the front of my own truck dropped... Just the way the internals of the manifold seems to work. Failing that start tracing the 4 air lines going to the 4 corners and check the fittings on top of the front air bags. Soapy water everywhere.. try it at all different ride heights. Gonna take some work but try the rears first and rule that out.

Living in Canada I've seen many problems with the air ride on these trucks when it's below freezing. Especially if you park in a heated garage. A lot of condensation builds up and gets in the lines and in the compressor. It just makes a mess of the system. Sure it might be nice when it is working, but I myself would stay away from it.
@charlesmarshall2697

Sounds like I won't have any issues because I am fortunate enough to never go where it gets below freezing on the Beautiful Coasts of Georgia and South Carolina!

I think there are leveling sensors with little rods attached to the sensor. You may have had snow and ice preventing the rods from moving therefore keeping the compressor running. I would check that.

Both my 2013 and 2015 RAM 1500 sports with the Air Ride failed in cold weather. It was -30C (-22F) or colder. However after parking either one in the Garage for a few hours to unthaw them. They worked fine. I will say also that they were parked in that cold air for multiple days without moving, prior to the failure. Up to -20C (-4F), I have never had an issue, and I use my air ride daily to get in and out of the truck. I park with the air bags empty always. If you will be in -40 C(-40F) or colder for long periods of time, I would probably be cautious on purchasing an Air ride suspension. Other wise, mine has been solid over the last 6 years in pretty extreme weather conditions.2015 Ram Sport 1500, 184,000km (114,000 miles).

I've had 2 Rams with the air suspension option and both have had this issue. I live in WV and anytime it gets below 0 degrees, this happens. Eventually it will blow the circuit breaker on the truck for the compressor and the truck will be sitting face down when it lets the air out of either the front or rear, since the valve is stuck open as the compressor tries to fill it. I was told by FCA that trucks in northern states have higher pressure in the nitrogen tanks to accommodate this, but they don't consider WV in the north! FCA's recommendation... take a hair dryer to the air tank and reset the breaker under the hood.

That’s very good info! Luckily Oklahoma doesn’t get below 0 very much. But the truck did perform well this winter while working in Montana. I also spent a little time in WV in December. WV is one of my favorite places to work. Thanks for watching!

I live in N.West PA. My 2013 RAM 1500 Longhorn's air pump lasted for 5yrs., before the pump overheated from the air system being clogged with frozen water vapor. I don't have room in my garage for the truck to fit with all the other cars, so it was parked outside 24/7. The second air pump on my 2013 only lasted 11 months. ($1,400.00). Then the 3rd pump worked fine for another 10 months. At that point I traded it in on a 2020 Ram 1500 limited. I've noticed that the 2020 model's air pump is much quieter. The older truck's pump had a loud whine to it. Especially in the cold.

@js17hilton
@js17hilton 3 года назад
@@MrJustinWheeler I had no signs of leaking either, other than the “cooling down” warning. Eventually I got the “immediately service air suspension “ Replaced both rear bags with arrnott units and it has been great. There is lots of information about this on the fca ram air suspension Facebook group. It was the bags that were leaking. No leaks elsewhere. Apparently when they leak they only leak while driving. Judging by how slow yours was going up and down, your nitrogen pressure has depleted and it is operating on the compressor generated pressure only. Hooking it up to a scanner you can read the pressure in the nitrogen tank. As well as the pressures at each wheel. It will also tell you the pressures they were at when the overheating code was set. On mine the right rear air bag was the main culprit and when it would set a code it was always 1/4 of the pressure of the others.

My 2021 limited is fine in the winter. I live in MN also. Don’t overuse the system is common sense.. trying to use entry exit and then go to off-road one or 2 is foolish. Keep the truck in normal mode and turn off the aero mode when it is below 0. The truck never moves the ride height/air suspension at all besides small adjustments for payload etc.. That is how you should use it in cold states. I’ve pulled my 5000lb trailer in -20 and the small amount it airs the rear to level the truck etc works fine. But airing the truck from full height to low and back and forth all day is not what it’s designed for in that temp, same as 100+ temp. On those days limit the amount of movement.
