I love your attitude about sewing. Down to earth, not self-deprecating and striking a balance between utilitarian and stylish - something I strive to be with my own sewing! You're very beautiful and talented!

I’ve been a theatrical costumer for over thirty years and, over the years, I, too, have gradually come to appreciate, and use, more natural fibers and vintage inspired looks in my own wardrobe. I recently discovered your videos and I really appreciate your research and attention to detail. I’m looking forward to future videos.

If you want a more fitting jumpsuit for your motorcycle and style, I'd highly suggest attempting to make a retro boiler suit. Much like what the lady's during wartime had to wear.

I'm so glad I've discovered your channel! The blouse you made is so feminine yet simple at the same time. So copying that make! I'd love to see a video on your 18th century shift. You mentioned you don't think you have anything new to add on the topic here on RU-vid. I beg to differ. As someone who has been searching for a shift tutorial with the look I'm after, I adore the neckline of your shift and the drawstring. Please, please, please share how you accomplished that neckline!

I’m about a minute in and already had to pause to like this because yes! Just yes. I’ve just picked up sewing this year and because of the fiasco that was getting a used machine when I did (may 2020) then finding and ordering replacement parts,feet, needles etc. then canceling and reordering and then having the machine serviced... I decided to hand sew instead to fill my time. And I think about it and it’s like oh that’s not that much but then I think but it was all new things and I made 5 items almost entirely by hand following B&T’s sew alongs. I look at those items having withstood a run in both the washer and dryer and I’m so proud because I was terrified that they would just fall apart because my stitches were not the most even but they didn’t! We all need that reminder to stop and appreciate what we have done. If nothing else 2020 has taught me that.

Ahhh yes me too! My mom taught me how to sew at age 10?? I've been sewing for 20 years, but I mostly sewed costumes and special occasion wear. Now i am sewing every day items and I wish i had started sooner! I love it, and every time I make something, I learn a little more. I also quit making things out of synthetic material too. My body cannot breathe in synthetics. So most of my clothing is cotton bc other natural fibers can be expensive! ❤️Thank you for sharing

I watched this video and your capsule wardrobe from scratch one and you complained about piling in both of them. I can't believe nobody else commented this but fabric shavers/ electric razors for fabric exist and are a true life changer. They are relatively cheap (especially if you consider the second life it gives to garments) and absolutely worth the investment. Shaving garments sometimes takes a while but it's absolutely better than throwing them away or relegating them to at home wear only. I would recommend getting one that attaches to the wall/socket so you don't have to bother with batteries. I hope you still see this comment even though the video is old

Wonderful stuff. I have spent decades in medieval groups and much enjoyed the comforts of earlier period gear as opposed to ill made modern synthetics. Brava for deconstructing function and recreating a wardrobe with the best of today's fabrics. I watched the entire episodes and I was thinking that if you had all your materials before the start of September, you would have had more time to sew and less time to be running back and forth from the store. Also, it would have probably have been advisable to try all the new patterns on inexpensive fabrics first so you didn't have all that investment put in. The other idea is there is a lady that goes to thrift shops and makes her new outfits out of them. It would have been interesting what each piece ended up costing. It was a great learning experience for you!

Thank you for sharing how you grew as a sewer over the course of 2019. The blouse is especially gorgeous! I love the pintucks and embroidery! Where do you buy high-quality natural fiber fabrics?
@sarahhavillamelooliveira5825
My country is perpetually summer. Year round, all the time, but half the time is hotter ans thus it rains and then it's suddenly a bit colder. Well, I'm 5 foot and 1 inch high (155 cm) and that's petit for an adult woman. I'm also very slim, but my proportions are a bit odd. So I am learning to sew in order to make "everyday wear". Since I'm on a budget, but love good quality natural fibers I decided to make things in layers. So I could replace one without messing with the others. The first one is white 70%linen/30%silk blend of slips that serves as undergarments. Some of them have short sleeves, but most are sleeveless. Second, in the same material I have a peticoat of sorts, some shorts and a tank tops, just two of each, also undergarments. Then I have the decor layer, which will be mostly open weave cotton overskirts, overdresses, capelets and blouses and since they can be cheaper to make than the rest they will probably be a colorful assortment (can be a bit sheer and unlined since I'll be wearing slips anyways). But some of my skirts, shorts and pants should be from heavier fabric... some will be cotton, some linen and one cashmere for each type. Apart from there is the weather layers. An oiled cotton capelet for rain, a cashmere armlenght cloak for overall foul weather and some short jackets, capelets and armwarmers/gloves. Apart from that I may make a pair of stays, swiss waist and waistcoat from some cotton. The expensive layers will be the underlayer and the outermost, basically. Those will be kept in mostly neutral collors such as white, brown, gray and an ocasional black. Maybe other collors as well such as dark blue or olive green.

I have just watched a few of your videos. Fabric is a challenge because even if you find one you love, finding the same knit again can be impossible. Here are a few of my best suggestions, after a long time sewing. When you re I eve your fabric, wash or have it dry cleaned first, however you plan to care for it going forward. I normally wash like colors in warm with a “dye catcher”, and then a second time with a white wash cloth, just to make sure. Keep a small swatch of each fabric for before and after comparison. If there is loss of color or brightness, only make it into something simple, because it is showing its future. Then do a rub test, taking two pieces and rubbing them vigorously for a few minutes, how does the surface hold up? When I buy knits, especially if they have Rayon, I will always wash and dry three times, because it is more prone to shrink. And I dry them on warm, regardless of the instructions just because over time mine end up accidentally going through the dryer. When you use a fabric that is different than what is typically used for a garment, really stop and consider how it might perform, does it have enough stretch? Does it have enough body to hold its shape the way the pattern demands? Once you have purchased it, that money is spent, but if it is a poor quality fabric do you really want to waste your time too? You are very adventurous in what you sew, you should be less critical of your finished garments. Finally, we have all become very accustomed to fabrics with stretch, and the resultant ease of fit and wear. If you are going to sew vintage or historical clothing you really have to keep in mind that shoulders, and sleeves either have to have built in ease ( they might look a little bit too big), or they may need darts and gussets. I don’t sew that but last week I pulled a piece of fabric out of my stash, a true vintage piece from circa 1968-70, (from something my mom sewed when I was 8-10), and I wanted to make slim fitting knee shorts. To make them as slim as I wanted, I could not sit in them! That fabric has zero stretch. Anyway, fun content.

I am trying to put together an 18th century inspired capsule wardrobe and am really torn about if I should change (modernize) the silhouette a bit.
@MariahPattie
@MariahPattie 4 года назад
I'm working on that concept too, and right now I'm thinking not. I tried it with that bodice, before I ever made 18th century stays, and once I finished them and could compare the two, i realized that I actually find the conical shape to be more comfortable. It opens up space for chest expansion when you breathe. So now I'm looking at making a modernized pair of stays from the same POF5 pattern, but more lightweight, and with a zipper at the front.

Sucks when you spend the time to sew a custom sized garment, and the fabric itself lets you down. Like you, I hate modern polyester fabrics, and prefer to sew with natural fibres. If I'm going to spend the time making my own clothes, I want them to be comfortable and last.

lol when i saw you talk about the arms in the 50s dress i was like! arm gussets! make arm gussets! but then u hate the material so no point lol as for the projects that you dont care for the colors or style, have you thought about dyes or refashioning? either would make interesting videos i dont know much of dying myself but i wonder if you could manage to (carefully!) bleach the lace on that slip to something more useful for you, even if it doesnt turn to something suitable you might be able to dye the whole slip to a more uniform color afterwards? just an idea c:

I grew up in the 80's and I miss my grey wool trouser pants. Slightly pegged and with a cuff. Something about the quality of clothes/fabrics has changed and not for the better. I am curious if the cost has been worth it. I hear people who sew say that it's cheaper to buy clothes than to make them.
@MariahPattie
@MariahPattie 3 года назад
It is cheaper to buy clothes, especially if buying from fast fashion stores. But I think the cost is worth it. Making the clothing is cheaper than it would be to buy equivalent items custom designed, tailored to fit, and made from natural fibers.

It is so hard to find t-shirt material that doesn't fade or pill. Unfortunately most of the fabric at my local fabric stores (only joann's here and I think walmart but I think walmart as a whole is overwhelming abd not fun to shop at). I use it for mock ups. Have you looked online for it? I'd love to know your sourse if you later found higher wiality knit. I will be. I have some vintage knit patterns from when zig zag stitch machines first became available. I love my stretch satin camisole. I almost have the pattern perfected for my figure. I would love to try the slip pattern you made but I'll need to finish using my vintage slip book and 2 separate patterns first. The pattern brand is Sew Lovely. You can find them on etsy by many sellers. Some even scaned them into PDF but I wanted paper. These are think paper like Kwik Sew patterns are. I trace it onto tissue paper that I recycle from gifts. This way I can tweak the pattern easily as I gain or loose weight. Lady problems, right? Oh, thank you for your patterning video for the shift. I dont make historical stuff but I've been looking for a nightgown and stores only have pajamas now. Nightgowns are out of fashion it seams. I think I'll try making a shift for sleepwear (1 linen for summer and 1 flannel for winter). Winter first obviously, since I am also tweaking my camisole pattern for T-shirt material to sleep in. My husband sleeps hot so I can't have flannel sheets. He would die a sweating insomniac. Grest review even 3 years later.

What would you differently about the chemise other than thickness? You and I seem to have a similar end idea in mind, and I'm curious how you would do round two. I'm currently thinking my way through a chemise-type underlayer, with a fitted bodice and slightly flared skirt/dress for over the chemise - chemise when home alone, throw on the outer layer when going out/company. Thus far I'm honing in on various historical inspirations before adjusting: dirndls, working woman's wear of the 18th-19th century, corded corsets, etc. I'm struggling with how to get a more modern silhouette from a supportive bodice ... could you wear that plaid bodice sans bra and be more comfortable do you think?
@MariahPattie
@MariahPattie 4 года назад
For the chemise dress, I think using a lighter weight fabric and probably making the bindings/straps a bit more narrow and delicate would go a long way. The pattern itself was pretty good. For supportive garments, I'm thinking a couple options: I want to try a cross between a modern bust bodice and early Regency short stays, with modern shaped bust cups, but hook and eye closure at the front and a lace-up back. For the 18th century bodice, I didn't explain it very well but the way conical bodices expand upwards gives you plenty of room for the bust to rise as your lungs expand. Vs. the shape I used which trapped the bust and did not give room for lung expansion. I didn't realize the difference until I finished my 18th century stays and could really feel it. But, I don't want to wear 18th century stays daily. I think I'm going to aim for a more accurate shaped bodice, with some built-in support. And I think the amount of support a person needs depends on their size. For myself, a couple denser layers, with some light boning in the front would probably do the job and be supportive enough.
@snarkyflower4435
@snarkyflower4435 4 года назад
@@MariahPattie That makes sense - Regency short stays with modern bust shaping. I can get away with some boning and an extra lining layer for support as well. It will be interesting to see what you come up with!
