Although market trends are clearly shifting to crossovers, it hasn't stopped a few key players from giving their flagship sedans a full makeover. #Toyota is one of those players with a completely new version of the #ToyotaAvalon for 2019. It features a bold new look, a completely new platform, and over 300 HP under the hood from its V6 engine. #Nissan also is a big player with the #NissanMaxima still among the top selling sedans. The latest version came out in 2016 so for 2019, the company is giving the #Maxima a slight refresh with a new look on the outside, new tech features inside, and still the same potent 300 HP V6 under the hood. Toyota claims the new #Avalon is most fun to drive ever but which of these big sedans is actually the more fun option?

Except the CVT and handling of the Maxima totally kills it. The maxima can't be considered a serious competitor in the luxury sedan category using that pathetic CVT and horrible FWD layout. This only makes sense if you can buy it with big discounts. Because in short, it does not perform like a real sports sedan. Not even remotely so. If they don't want to do AWD then at least stick the Nissans 7 speed gear box and use RWD. Anything just not this setup.

When I first watched this I was driving a 2018 Maxima. I got a new Avalon in Friday. I must say the Avalon wins my vote because of interior comfort and more luxurious quiet ride.

ANT I agree, the Toyota grill is ridiculous, but it looks better from every other angle than the Maxima. As well, the Avalon does not have a shitty CVT transmission, and while Nissan does not have terrible reliability or resale value, Toyota is better on both counts. Of the 2, I’d definitely choose the Avalon.

I drive a maxima for my job. I love it. Especially because the seats fit my back and I love the speed and acceleration when driving on the interstate or when needing to pass on a two lane road. My company is going to Toyota and I have ordered an Avalon. When test driving it I thought it was similar but I prefer the looks of the Maxima.

@@MrMagic-nw2tl this is true honda transmission problems and others as well come up at kind similar mile ranges but of course honda and those can last up to 200k miles at most if lucky you're better off getting a rav4 with a 8 speed instead of a CVT transmission or probably those 2019 tucsons as well with 8 speeds lol avoiding CVT in general is smarter anyone else is coping for what's to come soon

I don’t own either one but still like the Avalon better, and planing on getting one in 2020, maximum cvt trans will give problems and if you want 300,000 + trouble free miles go Toyota that v6 and 8 speed won’t disappoint, I’ve been looking at these cars for awhile and the Avalon’s just look better to me inside and out

I agree personally. I like the maxima better. The SR trims do ride rougher, but I have an sv and think it rides pretty dang smooth. I've had toyotas the last 6 years, and the Nissan to me is way more fun and comfortable. Biggest problem with the maxima is it lacks back seat room

Two of the most stable and balanced cars that I've driven has to be an altima and maxima. They handle extremely well in all kinds of conditions. Something about a nissan that's just structured all around.

Considering the more refined powertrain, lower center of gravity, more composed feel for a big sedan, TNGA chassis (versus the old Nissan D platform)... it does feel better in the handling department. Without trying too hard to dress up as something it's not.

These cars cant be compared. Avalon is more economical. Maxima is sporty. Owned 3 maximas and now have Avalon. In 2 years have had no problems at all. Nissan was another story hense why I dont have it anymore.

He always bags on Nissans. I think his biggest complaint along with many others is he just doesn't like the CVT in the Maxima, and of course that makes him nag on every little thing on the car that he wouldn't do on other cars....so yes it is bias. He'd never admit though....

I just bought the maxima 2017. So far I’m pleased. I’ve had it now 3 months and do feel it is a bit stiff in the seating, but previously owned a beetle and when I first sat in the maxima I felt comfort. Now that the newness has worn off that would be my only complaint. I need to keep in mind though that this a sportier car too.

I Own a 2013 maxima cvt with 50k miles and no problems. The acceleration feels a lot more smooth and linear than the traditional auto transmission which I'm sure the AVERAGE person would prefer. So unless u plan on taking this car to the track or drag strip the cvt is not a big deal at all. People are just one track minded.

Just drove a used 2018 Maxima I plan to buy. Great car all the way around. Avalon is cushy and all, but just wallows around when driven. The Avalon front end and dash are seriously butt ugly. I couldn't stand the looks inside or out. The Maxima is one of those cars that when you park it and walk away, you just have to turn around and look at it.

I chose the Maxima because I wanted the sportier car, I know it is not a 4dsc, but it is a sports sedan. I did not go with the sr because I did not want the harsher ride and I am happy with my choice. I've got 45000 km and so far issue free. I actually like the cvt transmission, you can see the last clip of the video why. The maxima isn't the greatest off the line, but it is good when already rolling, especiallly around 80 km/hr (50 mph). I am sure i would probably like the avalon too, but I like the styling and performance of the nissan more.

I have a 2018 Maxima SL and I completely disagree with anyone who says it’s not a sports car, that thing leaves everyone in the dust. I’ve raced friends that have tuned BMWs and Mercedes and they can’t compete with my stock Maxima. Idk if it’s just mine but the Maxima is definitely a monster/sports car! It’s the perfect mix of power and luxury!

Love your comparison & earlier Maxima review you did recently! We bought the same color Gun Metallic 2018 Maxima with identical Black rear spoiler & love the car, surprisingly quick even matching my Hemi Challenger 0 to 60 times. The Avalon is hideous, perhaps the worst new car design I've seen, I personally love the new & previous Maxima styling including the roofline, the subtle re-design is quite nice.

I've test driven both cars, to me the ride quality felt the same, but the Maxima is noticably faster. I'm sure the Avalon may have a little longer lifespan but to be honest modern Nissan's aren't as bad as people think. To me the Maxima wins.

Xcellent review. Have owned Lexus ES for 15 years. Avalon is a Sport SEDAN. Maxima is a SPORT Sedan. Sporty vs. longer Nice Cruiser. Now I own a Maxima. Great two vehicles.

Maxima is perfectly designed up front. That dark Vader look for the Avalon is probably taking away from sales. It's an Avalon, historically for older buyers and younger ones won't buy because of the cars initial intended group. Maxima has never been unintended as a sports sedan, even in the 80s. They should do something different with the front. I like the back.
