After watching this video, I'm glad I have my 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab. Toyota should have never went away from having the oil filter on the top side of the engine. It's so convenient.
that's all i thought about this whole video. it's one thing to go green stupid on the corrolas, i can't believe they messed with their trucks. I will never ever buy a vehicle with this plastic idiocy.
@@truthmonster3290 I buy filters by the case. $3.99 for Toyota OEM. I've been dailying mine for 14 years. Runs like it did new. Always a douche gotta pop up. 🌮 4 life
@@triple6758 no one gives a F if you like wasting your time and having plastic in your engine. real men like old school metal filters and convenience, moron.
This is the what i EXPECT when i pay for a service!!! Excellent job!! I love how much detail you go into and the pride you take in your work... My grandfather always told me "You dont have to be proud of your job but you damn sure need to be proud of your work". Again... GREAT JOB SIR!!
Owned Toyotas since the seventies. Told the wife this may be the last one. Just did the 1st oil change. Pain in the ass. Going to buy one more to see if the "engineers" make putting gas in the damn thing so inconvenient you just take it to the dealer to fill up.
Great video thanks! Well spoken, unlike other videos with people having their kids run around with annoying background noise or unnecessary music this was great!
I've performed all oil/filter changes on my '17 Taco since buying it new....it gets easier the more you do it. Between my lift and driving it up on one paver stone each tire, there's enough clearance to do it lying down on a big piece of cardboard comfortably. I'm 50+ and don't nessecarily like crawling around on the ground, but I have peace of mind it's done right and no stripped skidplate bolts, no oil spilled all over the engine block, things aren't over/under tightened, not over/under filled, etc.... I also save $20 to $30 while still using the best filter & oil. My engine in the TRD OR calls for 6.2 qt....I put in a case of 6 and it fills it perfectly near the full line. I've got it down to a half hour or so taking care not to spill a drop.
@@infomail8843 what I mean is that between my suspension lift and by driving up all four tires on a paving stone each and laying down a piece of cardboard to work on, I have plenty of room and protection from getting oil on the driveway
@@bigriver3278 OK got that thank you. I had hoped that it would be easier, or at least not more difficult, to just change oil at home. Progress, I guess...
Im 55 and still enjoy doing my own oil changes. I too use that piece of cardboard!. I just bout a 2019 TRD Pro and thankfully the owner before bought the aftermarket TRD skid plate with oil filter access. She doesn't even have 40K miles on her yet and was well taken care off.
The most useful video I've found on Toyota maintenance. Most start with the plate removed or just say it's "near the front." The last toyota I had worked on was a 1985 Pickup, now I have a 2018 Tacoma and was sick of having to take it in for other people to do maintenance on it
You mentioned the genius who designed the fill tube. The person who designed your fill tool, definitely is a genius. Great video. Perfect explanation of a every important job
no mess clean drain thingamajig the Oil "Nicely - goes in my sleeve😄" your charm during the most annoying mishap of all of us that change our own oil earned you a subscribe! I'm watching your videos from now on very good and thorough video good Sir!
I just had the toyota dealer do my 30K service on my tacoma, and I decided to do the oil change. The first two bolts to take off the pan were tightened so tight, I stripped the head of the bolts with ratchet and 6 sided sockets. So I had to take it in to the local shop so they could charge me 70 bucks for an oil change I already had all the parts for. I seldom go you dealerships because of several bad experiences, chalk up another one. I figured the 30k service would be my last chance at getting repairs free if something was wrong, so i am back to doing things myself. I do love your video's and your attention to detail, I just wish all service worked under the same principals :)
Thanx, first time watching a oil change video. I wanted to see the oil filter change. You are a great teacher and if I ever, need to see another how too on vehicle maintenance, I hope you have made it. Thanx again and keep up with the great work you do.
Thanks for this. You should also pour some new oil onto the new oil filter to ensure a wet start when turning the engine on. Pour new oil onto the filter after installing it into the oil filter housing.
This guy is good!! At least now I know how to do it. I did not read all of the comments, but, after only owning Toyotas since 1993 (two, 250K miles on each, original clutch on each), if I had seen this before I bought my 2019 Tacoma (free oil changes just ran out), I would have checked into other models. Remove skid plate? Filter is not near drain plug? Insert plastic piece to drain some used oil? TWO o-rings? Special tool to remove filter housing? Maybe two tools?? Off topic I guess, but ... I last had a 2002 Tundra. This 2019 Taco has no armrests, a one-level console, phone charger is buried at bottom of inside of console, glove box contents spill out, lots of engine noise, several owner's manuals, the biggest of which is 700 pages, with diagrams that do not correspond to what I see on my dashboard, all kinds of safety warnings EVERY time I start up, A/C defaults to 'recycle air' every time I start up, cannot dim dashboard lights completely, smart cruise control slows down "out of an abundance of caution" when you get anywhere near the vehicle ahead, a warning when the temp gets below 37 degrees (!!)..... I was in need of a new pickup quickly, so I jumped on this. It is reliable, yes, but overall is not what I expected. Just venting.
Excellent video, my friends said this filter was different than the older Tacoma's, but I never thought it would be this different. Patience is a virtue.
Sure! While I was changing oil, the high wind blew through under the car and the oil spilled to my face. Some how, it is easy to mess up the drive way.
5:03 you sound calm and soothing for a pissed off man with used oil under his sleeves and on the floor. 🤣 Thanks for sharing the video, and thanks to you my sleeves are pretty clean 👍
Just FYI you cant tell if oil needs changed by the color! Synthetic oils do a excellent job of keeping contaminants in suspension which is good! Love your videos
I will never buy another new Toyota. I love my 2002 Tundra. I can work on it and do most repairs. My oil change takes me about 10 mins. Toyota used to be good. Thanks for showing what a pain in the ass this Taco is to do an oil change on.
It's not that hard as you may think. I got a 17 camry and I thought before I did it. It was ridiculous and hard. I still think it's ridiculous. But not hard anymore.
The 3rd generation Tacoma has a lot if issues And Toyota doesn’t give a shit about their costumers , instead of fixing the issues they kept blaming software 😂 I traded mine in as soon as I could
Just FYI that oil filter wrench has notches in it to slide up for a better fit than where you had it. 3 grooves on one side and 1 on the other fit snugly down into the grooves of the wrench. Otherwise you could strip the filter housing.
You're a Great teacher with a wonderful sense of humor. My 1997 T100 SR5 has 300K+ miles with No "Skid Plates". What Genius came up with that idea? The T100 hasn't been to the dealer since I purchased it. I've never had a problem I couldn't fix myself and it still looks like new. WELL, not quite...windshield replaced about 10 yrs ago.
I love Scottie Kilmer but he is always yelling and even makes me nervous watching. This guy is very, very calm and collected. I like these videos and I own a older Corolla so it helps me.
Yeah Daddy. Great tutorial. I just got a new Takoma and it is a lot different to change the oil than the 2013 model I had. Your tutorial was great and got me squared away to do what I need to do. Thanks bud. Good job.
I use a plastic hose on the plug you push in the oil filter so its not messy , or as messy. The Toyota filter socket I use locks on those tabs on the outside not the center part like yours. Great video always enjoy !!
Thanks for the Great video , all I can say is , try doing this at home in your driveway on your back , like most people would do this . This is the game changer for me , I was going to get a new Tacoma ,but after seeing this ,I am going to keep my 2014 . I will get a new one when they get rid of this Stupid , Stupid idea .
I guess a plus would be that it's easier to inspect the filter element. Being a bit obsessive, I ritualistically cut/hack open old filters just to have a squiz at what it caught.
I hate my 4Runner filter...wth... And that asinine plastic plug you jam up into the filter and the filter cup that is always just on the verge of stripping all the flutes....crackhead idea
I would have put the drain plug on the filter housing back on and prefilled some new oil in it... I have heard for decades how important that is on startup. In October, 2018, Toyota switched the filter system from the cartridge to the self-contained canister on the 2ZR-FXE, 1NM (as featured on the Lexus CT200h, Priuses and 4-cylinder hybrids by Toyota/Lexus). I really thought that was a great move and played a very minor part in my purchase. Let's just say it was a "yay!" moment.
The dipstick is reading over full because the oil filter canister is still empty, as the engine hasn't been run yet. Once it runs for a bit the filter fills with oil and the level will drop. I like to pour some oil directly into the canister with the new filter, to minimize the void in the flow upon first startup. It's probably overkill, but it's easy enough to do since this particular filter isn't installed on a tilt.
The. Filter is still a part of the oil feed circuit and still takes time to fill the filter housing.Old school mech still partially fill oil housing with oil.The oil filter is designed so a good mech. can examine the filter for unusual engine component wear.
Toyota charges 75.00 for an oil change where I live an now I see why. I have a 2020 Tacoma and will only take my truck to the dealer after seeing this. Thanks for the good information.. First oil change was free and the second will be coming up soon.
Great video instructions!! a small correction: the positioning of the wrench to the filter house is incorrect. It need to be aligned with the gap on the wrench and the filter house.
I like your videos, you explain things in such a clear ,precise manner.I never knew about the factory kit way to do it before, probably because i never owned toyotas ,just hondas. But i found this oddly interesting .thank you.
Thanks. Just changed my 2016 Taco for a 2020. Useful video. Can you check filter oil seal if you put back the skid plate before running the engine? Watch all your videos, appreciated.
I used a 3/8 clear tube from my refrigeration parts and cut to size as needed to attach it to the filter drain plug. Worked like a charm. Not a single drop of oil. That filter casing however, is a nightmare. Broke my first filter case socket trying to torque it loose.
Good one, Eddie, on the tubing idea! I added a piece of 1/2" PEX tubing (PEX is the most common material used now for the water distribution systems in our houses so it is very easy to find). The OD of the PEX matches the OD of the filter drain so I joined the two with 6-8 wraps of black electrical tape. Worked great!!
I have Toyota care with free oil changes for 2 years on my 2020 Tacoma. Difficult to mark the filter to see if it really gets replaced. Might have to put a small piece of paper on the skid plate and see if it is there after the oil change. Time is money to mechanics, so skipping this step might happen. My 2005 Tacoma had the oil filter on top of the engine and was easy to change.
I just skip using that plastic piece. And just unscrew the oil filter housing. You just get oil all over your hand anyway. Just have a dip pan ready when you remove the housing.
Loved the video very helpful...my tacoma needs a engine belt change the truck starts squeaking when i speed up so thatll be my next job to do on my tacoma any tips?
I love my Toyotas, al I have ever owned have been phenomenal vehicles....but who is the genius that decided a filter change had to be a 15 step tutorial?
Great invention? That supplied plastic one sucks. Aimsoil filters come with a screw on type which is actually much better. I kept it for it is reusable and use Toyota filters too. Don’t remove the adaptor while unscrewing the housing. Loosen housing enough to unscrew it by hand and leave the plastic drain adaptor in. It allows drainage while removing housing and makes it much cleaner. Surprised you did not get more spillage but give it a try. Curious how you know synthetic oil looks. If the synthetic and conventional have the same viscosity how can you tell by the way it flows out? Great video TM!
David Kaplan I did a couple of major mistakes when I started servicing my car 3 years ago. I literally had all of my oil spill out, so just be careful you don’t double gasket your oil filter and torque the oil pan bolt well and proper. Luckily my engine survived my stupidity.
I sure hope you soon get a 4-cylinder 2.7 liter engine Toyota Tacoma Truck 3rd Generation. Many of us own the 2TR-FE engines. Thanks for your consideration.
Awesome video, easy to follow and very informative! Subscribed! I had a ‘16 TRDPro off-road and upgraded to a 19’. The oil filter being located underneath is a kind of sketchy but easy to remove.
I can imagine going to a mechanic for an oil change and either being turned away because the shop does not have the right removal tool or the housing gets damaged in the process because the wrong tool was used, not to mention the probability of much higher cost involved for an oil change.
thanks for posting.. What a cumbersome system that Toyota adapted to substitute something as simple and common as a disposable oil filter. The filter element inside a fixed housing is old technology from the 50's. Wonder why they decided to adopt this weird system?
My friend there is a clippers around the oil filter housing remove it before the housing and other thing do u think tacoma is it a good truck or not? I want to buy a truck which one it’s good
With my previous 2004 Toyota Camry V6, the oil filter (not canister) was located right at the front of the engine and I could remove it by hand with the hood up......no jacking or anything! But of course, Toyota has to change and complicate things. I think they did this so it would be harder for owners to do maintenance and would have to take it to a dealer so they could make more money for their dealers. You Bastards!
What do you think are good time intervals for oil changes when your mileage is below the recommended number? Thx for all the great videos- you are a true craftsman and it’s obvious you love your work!
