I test Yamaha's premium edition MT09, the SP! With fully adjustable Ohlins rear suspension, adjustable forks, a Quickshifter and a special paint scheme is this version worth the extra money?

Got one. Suspended quite hard from the factory. I put it to it’s softest settings as explained in the manual and it transforms night and day. Makes it more balanced front to rear. Love it. Best bike for the road I ever had and I’ve ridden loads.

When I tried one it gave me the impression of having some on-off throttle, at least in the full power map. I think they do it on purpose to give it that "instant power" feeling that people love so much, but I prefer to have more control.

Total hooligans weapon. I still found the front vague at the track as you are sat over the back, you just had to lean it over and trust it. I mostly rode in std as its the smoothest with no speed loss. Very quick bike off the lights and for overtaking. The flighty front becomes predictable, once you are used to it you start to love it, just keep it pinned and lean forward. The bike is raw, build quality isnt premium but ok. I sold mine for an S1000r. The flat seat was horrible with a pillion. I use the back brake a lot but they still slide forward smashing your balls into the tank. The extra weight at the back also makes the front even more vague. I would still have one in my garage though, it wakes you up like a cold bucket of water 😉

Brakes: Not to be judged until fully bedded in. Power: Emissions/noise regs limit in gear 1, 2, and 3; high rpm power limited, and speed limited in 6th. Throttle calibration: Emissions/noise regs require fuel injector cut-off when throttle is closed. E-throttle calibration is messy. On/off throttle very abrupt. Fueling: Emissions/noise regs require low emissions at part throttle at highway cruising RPM; lean stoichiometric ratio, surging at part throttle at low rpm ranges. Combined with aforementioned conditions, the throttle is a mess. Bike can run perfect, just needs a quality ecu flash, exhaust, and Sprint/DNA filter.

SP == suicidal power ? "happy sacks" I've never heard them called that before ! Then "man jewels" and I'm sure I heard "spuds" , so many different terms ... Can I add "plums" to the list ? Lots of torque, surely it has traction control ? Have you tried a Triumph Speed Twin or Thruxton ? 112 Nm of peak torque. Admittedly they don't rev as high or produce as much peak bhp, but in the 2000 to 7500 rpm band they almost pull your arms off. Treat the throttle with care. If you haven't tried one then do. I've also had a test ride of a Street Triple RS (bit dearer than this), that felt very good to me (I am a newbie). Lovely TFT on that, in the MIDDLE, nice and easy to read, so you can see when you're being a very naughty boy :)
