Glad I saved money and waited to get the Bark River Shining Mountain Bowie instead of going on the cheap and buying the Schrade Leroy Bowie. I actually like Schrade quite a bit, but they do not appear to make hard use knives. Schrade's customer service is fantastic and their boot clip knives appear to be good. Just not hardcore in-the-woods good! Thanks for the review! Very 👀 opening!

That's one of the saddest feelings, when you have a good tool, then suddenly you don't. As you said, it's a good thing it broke here and not out in the wilderness. Nice review, I'm kinda sad I seem to have missed out on the Jarosz Choppa as it's no longer available. I did snag a War Sword for 40 bucks on clearance so even if it's only mediocre, it was cheap and I'm not particularly worried about a Ka-Bar breaking.

@@fit4knives882 I like your reviews, they are quite honest. To tell the truth I only buy knives made in the USA or in Europe. I don't trust the Chinese for knives. Chinese steels are known to be unreliable in quality and the heat treatment is often poor. I really like the 1095CroVan American and the high quality and reliable Ka-bar heat treatment. I build knives for my use and like simple and reliable steels. 80CrV2, XC75 (1075), XC100 (1095), 100MnCrW4 (O1) ... more expensive than Chinese steels but for me reliability is essential. Good luck, I subscribe

It could be because this jackass decided to cut construction grade tubing which weakened the Leroy. At that point, go get a circular or reciprocating saw, not a knife. These knives were designed for survival not construction applications. Go cut down a real tree, not a branch.

The Leroy probably weakened from this jackass hitting it with the very last construction grade tubing. At that point, go get a circular or reciprocating saw, a survival knife doesn't chop construction grade tubing.

My Leroy came with a very crap tempering job.... I grinded all the paper thin part made a new edge, and took the scales off ,of course , re tempered the steel on an electric oven at 485° for half an hour, and put back together and went and hacked hard wood from furniture, that ain't no tree branch, aimed to break it, didn't happen.... 50/50 feelings, because for 40 something bucks I shouldn't had to re done the blade.... won't buy one ever again...

I had a Schrade break in half just like that while chopping kindling on a camping trip - first time I ever used it (SCHF36), and the knife was about 1/4" thick. I filled out their online form and they sent me a new one, no questions. That said, I probably won't take it on a trip again - sucks because it was a good size and I like the design. I was only out for a couple of nights, so it wasn't a huge deal, but if I'd been relying on it I would have been screwed.

I think the steel choice also played a role in that failure. 8cr13MoV is not a steel I would pick for a chopper. Ideally 5160 would be good, but the 1095 in the CRKT and Kabar would be adequate. I also have that Karen Hood Chopper, it is light; I think that is why I picked it up, even though I knew it wasn’t going to be the best chopper. That Jaroz Chopper also has my attention.

I do have this weird Knife from Fingerhut of all places they got like a 50 with a bundle of knives and this is big and mean looking but I'm afraid to test it out. Out of yours right here I like the Mtech of course and your fifth one as well. As far as a weak point in that knife, the grain structure looked super clean and even, can’t see it great on my phone but, steel with that nice of internal structure should NOT have broken like that. Even as viciously as you were hacking, I’ve seen far more violent action on cheeped knives hold up. I’m curious if that company offered replacement? Again, entertaining and educational. The first 2 knives were tested on the portion of the wood with more closely compacted dark growth rings wich are stronger than the light colored growth rings, you need a good 4 inch thick piece of oak with a more uniform thickness of dark growth rings, more of an actual test I would think as far as comparison in an actual survival situation to measure durability of sharpness and structural integrity for longevity of life

OK. I used a video analyzer at a slower speed and saw that you actually hit the table with that Schrade. When you stepped down just before the Schrade knife break you thereby lowered your center of arm pivot but you could not compensate because your upper arm is at a fixed length. So when you swung from a lower position the knife hit the corner edge of the table concentrating the the energies at exactly the point of break on the knife. That means a do-over. Check it out.

@@jorgefernandez6407 Indeed, makes me wonder why there is a need for big choppers...other than for jungle type vines, bushes, overgrowth, low hanging branches but even then I would use an axe on harder surfaces or at least on the belly of a recurved chopper not hit the strongest resistance at the narrowest point of the blade. That's almost reckless, akin to taking an axe and chopping and overreaching thereby hitting the wood to be chopped with the axe handle breaking it and saying "this axe sucks" or whatever phrase du jour is used by reviewers these days. The lab computer where I saw the graphics showed why the knife split and sheared to the right side of the user (basically too much knife blade was beyond the target wood wher the user made contact) which was lucky. If it had broken at the belly it probably would have sheared off to the left...across the path of the user. I have and use 3 Schrade SCHF's, the 35, 42, & 9. You can’t expect cheap stainless or even higher end stainless steels to act like a tool steel like 1095. It will almost always chip easier under that kind of abuse depending on heat treatment of course but you can’t expect a cheap knife like the schrade to have a good heat treatment. But it was an enjoyable video

Sir, with all due respect I implore you to try the Ontario sp53. 5160, lots of belly. I cleaved an almost tennis ball sized rock in two with minimal edge damage. AWESOME!!!

Ontarios sp5 is .23 inch thick but unlike the Junglas it is a true full flat grind and there lies the weakness in the design for heavy use.

Could be a bad heat treat or some other quality issues. Schrade should replace that. But that was dangerous though. Could have ricocheted into someone and killed that person. Ps. I think I know where the weak point is. It is probably the name that is stamped on it. The name stamping process probably put too much stress on the material and injured it. It was probably broken internally before first use.

I used to work QC as knives came in the Chinese knives go through 1 QC check if that. American and European knives went through 7-9 QC checks. You really do get what you pay for!

I will never but a shrade for survival I've seen them fail to many times. I might use one to split firewood at home because I can return if it fails and it's not endangering my life in a survival situation.

As a new subscriber, I see this video is 2 years old ....... but I'm very curious to learn how you know the Raptor is 7Cr13. I bought an Outlander Bowie about 5 years ago and was told by a Master Cutlery representative in Massachusettes that the steel used to make the knife was 3Cr13. Can you give any information to the contrary?
@fit4knives882
@fit4knives882 2 года назад
I review so many knives I make mistakes occasionally. 440C is printed on the Raptor Blade so I am assuming that's what it is made of. Thank you Dwayne.

@@fit4knives882 I like your videos and subscribed. It sure wasn't my intention to try to say you were wrong or mistaken. I bought an Outlander that was advertised as 440c. On the blade one side said 440c ,the other side said 8Cr13. I contacted Master Cutlery and spoke with a girl in Massachusettes who said she would ask the manufacturing plant technicians . Two or three days later I received an Email from her saying she was told the steel was 3Cr13. My guess is the only way to know for sure would be to have the steel analyzed. I still have that Outlander and you're right, it's a beast. Again, thanks for responding......and the good videos.

Schrade is from a time when men were men and they knew better than to chop or baton with a knife. Small hatchets were the norm. Example: Estwing Sportsman E14A hatchet ... Chopped and batoned almost anything, and all you needed for a knife was a $3.00 Camp- King pocket knife. You looked like a pro getting all the tasks completed ... the correct way.

@@ApocGuy I agree with both you and the guy talking about Bark River knives. Both Bark River and Becker are fantastic knives that you cannot go wrong with. I have done a lot of research after buying bad knives. Own a Becker BK-7 and a Bark River Shining Mountain Bowie. No complaints about either!

The problem is most knife manufacturers use stainless steel and its way to brittle for large blade lengths.

8CR13 is a poor choice for a heavy chopper. My Leroy got a major chip out of the blade after my 1st and only use.

Th problem is the hollow grind on that Leroy. It's planned obsolescence. It's what happens when the desire to sell more knives overtakes the desire to sell good knives. You're getting what you pay for with Schrade -- hollow-ground blades & all. Don't rely on Schrades to take heavy abuse. It's great if they do, but don't expect them to.

There's a lot of good quality knives that use Hollow Grind
@mplsatty
@mplsatty 3 года назад
@@dbchillin7747 There are. But there are even more low-quality knives that use hollow grinds. It's the cheapest grind to put on knives. It can be a great grind for a hunting knife, but it's a really bad choice for a chopper. Then again, Schrade is now a low-quality brand, so it might be the company's lax manufacturing standards more than the grind on this knife that caused the failure.
