Im putting some money aside here and there to get a bike. Im looking for it to be under $4000, ive been riding 4's for the past 7 years and have been looking to buy a new bike. I looked at rmz250's and bikes similar but the maintenance is insane sometimes. My friend is starting to convince me to buy a 2 stroke and I've been looking at the ktm 250 sx. What do you recommend? Maintenance is pretty cheap for 2 strokes and the engine is is more simple compared to a 4 stroke engine.

@@DirtJunkie Hey I forgot to ask you. Who will be your go to source for Beta protection,armor. Who will have early stock? Guessing a lot of manufactures won't have stock for a while eh? Last question, what protection have you decided on. I'm assuming one of the primary reasons you opted to go 200 vs 250 300 was because of how more nimble and light the 200cc is.
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
@@WADZUP yes, I am keeping things fairly minimal on protections. I have an E-line pipe guard for a '19 which I figured would fit. I want an AXP skidplate but they currently dont have the 2020 200 on schedule. I ordered the Buano radiator braces because they were available but I wanted the enduro engineering ones for cost. Radiator braces, bash plate, pipe guard are the only protections I have planned. I think removing the OI, lights and street stuff will more than make up the weight of those protections anyway.
@WADZUP

@@DirtJunkie Good point. I've been speaking with Propower International and looking at timelines for parts. I understand they are one of Beta larger manufactures of after market but they are a ways away so shipping could be a issue. Anywho, I've seen the new design of how they run the hose for oil and it looks well thought out. Is the reason your removing the OI for dependability, peace of mind and weight?

@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 4 года назад
Most functions on my speedo stopped working when I got the 2020 and turned out to be a loose connector. I ended up removing it entirely along with the headlight, just putting a regular hour counter on it. You should be able to replace it with a trail tech, as I'm sure you're aware the OEM speedo is insanely expensive.

@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 4 года назад
I tried a 2017 xtrainer and didn't like it. The suspension is bad and the engine response was slow and didnt rev quickly. It seemed to be carbureted poorly compared to my 300rr. I actually prefer the 200 engine over the 300 for the obstacles because it revs faster and is lighter, I think it's even lighter than the xtrainer.

I really think the 2020 chassis has improved the feel of the bike but I hadn't ridden a 2019 125 or 200 to really have something to compare with. The 2020 actually feels a bit taller than the 19 (I sat on both side by side at the dealer), and taller than my 300, so it can start feeling awkward for me on technical hill climbs and pivot turns with a 29-30" inseam. Will see how it feels once I set the sag to 105mm, no idea what it is currently.
@flaccidenduro6888
@flaccidenduro6888 5 лет назад
@@DirtJunkie I wonder if that also has to do with the brand new stiff suspension and it just needs to settle. Not sure if your bike will have a low seat option or not, hard to tell with how thin it already looks stock. I have yet to set my sag, and I'm 15 hours in. Will try that out this week perhaps. Be nice if you were closer, do a comparison for the youtubes. Ah well🤷‍♂️
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
@@flaccidenduro6888 where are you located? As far as low seat I dont think it will be an option, maybe you could get 1/2 inch at the cost of sitting on a brick. When I set my sag to 105mm on my 300 I felt like it made enough difference that I didnt need the low seat, but my sah before was way off at around 85mm. 105mm is also at the upper range of race sag for a beta, it works well for my type of riding but may come at a cost in handling and cornering in faster flowy trails.

Awesome bike and great video. I have 2019 300 Race edition, and thinking about 200rr in next year. Most of the time I ride on the coal mine heap (hill climbs, traverse), some woods single track, and some mountain riding (rocky streams, long hill climbs, etc.) Does 200 have enough torque and power to do all the stuff? (I know it is the rider not the bike, but 300 is really helpful :) )
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
In my opinion yes the 200 can climb very well but I'm not familiar with coal heaps. Climbing on soft stuff and loam like a sand dune might prove a challenge for the 200. It shines most in technical hill climbs, but for the straight open WOT climbs the 300 is where its at.

Hi and thank you for a really good vid. If I got the info right, it´s only the 250 and 300 that got a counter balance shaft which is a pity if so. So how does the 200 feel when it comes to vibrations? I´ve been riding KTM´s for couple of years. But now that i´ve sold my 2017 350 Sixdays, I´m thinking of trying another brand and when I read about the 2020 Betas I got really curious. Especially on this 200RR which seems to be a great deal of fun and easy to handle.
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
So I had the chance to hop between my 200 and a 2018 300 back to back. I didnt think I noticed the vibes on my '18 300rr, but after getting off the 200, was really surprised how much I noticed the 300 vibrated. The 200 might as well be counterbalanced in comparison because it feels quite smooth.

helpful vid. im thinking of getting a 200rr next year as a second bike, i ride a xc300 2019 now. the only concern that i have regarding the 200 is that i won't have enough torque to climb lugging the engine, i do a lot of hard enduro and we use that technique a lot of times for minimum wheel spin. what do u think? will the make a racing version for the 200 also? or thats only for the 250-300?
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
I'm not sure on the race edition for the 200 I bet they will make one for 2020 but that's just speculation. I bought the 200 and sold my 300 for the sole purpose of "racing" (for me it's just survival) hard enduro and I think it's a good move especially for us weighing 180 or less. It lugs very well with the proper gearing and once I'm used to it I think I'll be at least as good at hill climbs as I was on my 300 (admittedly hill climbing is my weakness. I've had a lot more training on obstacles but am fairly inexperienced on hills as I just moved to a place with hills). Edit: I will add that when you dont make the climb, it's a hell of a lot easier to either push or recover and retry on the 200 compared to the 300, less energy used.
@Darco712
@Darco712 5 лет назад
@@DirtJunkie thanks. I know it's very light weight, but my xc is also 98kgs they say :)
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
@@Darco712 the xc doesn't come equipped with lights, horn, or oil injection right? So when you remove all that from the 200 you will shed a few lbs off advertised weight which puts you down nearly to 95-96kg. Surely you will put that right back on when you add protections which you'd do to the xc also. So assuming a few kg lighter, you also feel less weight due to the physics of a smaller engine which makes it feel easier to throw around. But is a few kg worth getting a new bike? Up to you!

Would you recommend this for someone just getting into enduro/ single track or would the xtrainer be the better pick, used to power current bike is yz450fx
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 4 года назад
I would. I plan to make a video talking about what I think the 200 is good at vs 300 and xtrainer. To summarize I'd say the 200 is better at extreme enduro than the 300, but not as good as the xtrainer, and in some cases does take more finesse than the 300 to get it done particularly in extremely slick situations. Some people would rather run rekluse or not bother getting better with the clutch and in that case I'd go with 300rr for an all around bike or the xtrainer for extreme enduro.

@rirrid5662
@rirrid5662 4 года назад
Thanks for the video really well done ! Have you formed any more concrete opinions about it's strengths and weaknesses ?
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 4 года назад
I will do a follow up video but its strength is definitely its weight and ease of throwing around. It also lugs extremely well for a 200 no complaints about the power but you do need in the correct gear (for example I've been caught on a climb after being in 4th on a trail and forgetting to downshift once or twice for the hill), not a big deal. The only real critique I have of it right now is how the power is delivered - in an extremely poor traction situation like a greasy smooth rock, the 200 can break traction and spin out more easily than the 300. The 200 has the power needed but not quite as much traction as the 300. Its weight can make up for this in most cases but these are the situations I miss the 300. I dont miss the 300 when I have to push the bike up a ledge or pick it up. I also prefer the 200 for obstacles. The fact that the 200 does have a similar linear power curve as the 300, yet less of it, also makes it more forgiving if you make a mistake where you use excessive throttle. The other side of that coin is the 300 can continue to pull and climb 2 gears too high with some clutch work if you make a mistake in a climb or corner. I would say the 300 is a bit more versatile of a bike if you do a combination of fast riding such as desert, and also do hard enduro; it can do it all very well. The 200 is very good in hard enduro but I would prefer more power if I did a lot of fast or desert riding.

I prefer 1st as a granny gear to use only on creeping through rocks or on bigger obstacles with a slow approach. It revs out in 1st too quickly even with stock gearing and like you suggested, gives poor traction. Also most of the riding I do is in 2nd or 3rd gear so for me it makes sense to change the ratio so that I can make better use of those gears.

I've never tried a KTM TPI. I've seen a carbed KTM 150 and it seemed to do well but it depends on what you need. If seat height isn't a problem for you and you want the TPI because you ride a lot of elevation change then it seems like a good candidate.

I’ve got one also and love it the 2020 chassis is much better than the 19, I’ve played with the jetting and have the Suzuki needle NECJ in and it give much better cleaner more linear power, weirdly I like the 15t front for an all round better gearing and really like the rain map for anything gnarly 👍
@PrimalEnduro
@PrimalEnduro 5 лет назад
where are you at with pilot and main with the NECJ? I'm running stock jetting at the moment on my 19 200rr and have a NECJ needle I can try. I took the map switch off since I kept accidentally bumping it into rain mode. 14t sprocket for me in my goat trails.

I havent tried the rain mode yet but was thinking about it on the way home. They did put the switch a better location because I would hit it inadvertently on my 300 all the time. I occasionally used it on the 300 when approaching a nasty slick off camber climb. Maybe it helped or maybe it only helped because I thought it helped lol

@DirtJunkie

Nah that's the point of the test, lots of hills here get worse higher up and the moment of not putting power to the ground for the downshift will make you fail the climb.

@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 4 года назад
Theres a guy with videos riding his in high desert at similar elevations and up to around 10k ft. I dont remember the name. His terrain appears more open where I'd prefer the 300, but the 200 seems to do pretty well even on the climbs. I think hes lighter at around 140-150lbs without gear.
@tysleight

@@DirtJunkie sweet that is what I needed. I'm 205lbs with gear so maybe I just skip a few desserts and put that $$ to a new RR.
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 4 года назад
@@tysleight the 200 continues to surprise me with how much power it has all around. The gear spacing and transmission are perfect. I do weigh around 150 without gear currently but normally closer to 160. I've found myself in the wrong gear and even up hills slow in 3rd gear, as long as the bikes rolling it's really not bogging or anything and is easy to slip the clutch. Nothing extreme and with something super steep you definitely dont want to be going slow in third. But if you regularly hit single track, especially if its tighter and twisty stuff, it is the best handling bike I've ever experienced. Most people complain about sachs forks, personally they are working very well for me but can be a bit firm if going slowish in super tight rocky stuff, and that's with compression all the way out. Once the speeds increase a bit they smooth out. But anything I say with suspension take with a grain of salt because I'm not good at dealing with it and I probably dont know what a perfect setup feels like to compare.
@tysleight
@tysleight 4 года назад
@@DirtJunkie that helps so much, everyone around here is pushing big bikes and I don't see the need. Lots of single track. Currently I have a big bike and don't love it. So I'll be BYOB tonight at work. Thanks again.

How is the feel of the ZF suspension?
@DirtJunkie
@DirtJunkie 5 лет назад
It worked very well for everything in the back yard. Otherwise it was far too stiff on the trails however it wasnt broken in, sag not set, and clickers not set. I usually run my clickers all the way out except HS compression on the goat trails. That being said I was still impressed and had no issues with deflections. Might have been a hint of harshness on the forks in rough downhills riding brakes but feels like any of that will be gone on break-in.

5'10" with a short inseam for my height at around 29-30". The bike is uncomfortably tall for me, it can get very awkward on hill climbs and pivot turns. I hope that once the suspension is broken in and I get sag set to 105mm it will be more like my 300.

LOL this gives me motivation to try and come up with something. I have a good amount of footage from WV and a bit from a previous ride but in terms of content not enough to really make a coherent vid unless maybe I try some voice over stuff. Just stringing together riding clips gets boring to watch. I'm recovering from a broken big toe (got plate and screws installed) so not doing any filming at the moment. Plus, I dont know what to do next, nothing is gonna top or even come close to how well this video did lol. Maybe I'll do a follow up on the 200 to talk about what I've done and future plans for it, along with some riding footage in the background.

@@AtlasEnduro lol yours is not awful. You did give me an idea I can use to scrounge together a video though. And yeah it's really not about the views and I never expect to grow into a big enough channel to actually make anything more than beer money (I could buy a rear tire with money made from this video which is exceptional compared to my usual). But I do enjoy a sense of getting better with my content and such, and now I've already pulled out all the tricks I can think of for this video and sort of lost motivation because I feel the need to top it or make the next one better.

I've only seen a ktm 150 being ridden once but it would surprise me if it could lug at a crawl in 2nd gear uphill better than the 200. The 200 seems to have magical lug ability that it shouldn't have for a 200 (with appropriate gearing, stock gearing is awful but an easy fix)
