I have the old model. This bike loves to cruise between 6 and 7 k, so at 130 kmh i just leave it in 5th. I then have a fantastic responsive bike with great sound and no vibrations and the fuel economy is not that much different. I must admit this is my first bike so i cant compare. 10k kmss in 4 months now commuting to Brussels

Regarding motorcycles and vibrations: I've owned 4 motorcycles now in 3 years' time. Suzuki C50T, Kawi VN900D, Kawi Versys 1000LT, and now Tiger 1200 XRx. All were purchased new excepting the Suzi. They all vibrated at certain RPM/Speed combos. On my Tiger, at 6K RPM and 80+MPH, the mirrors are unusable due to vibrations, but the bum and hands are ok. I'm sure lots of folks think their bikes are smooth as silk at all times, but I suspect a reality distortion field is strong in them.

Same here, just bought bike 35,the S1000xr and its vibration is at a narrow band that doesn't bother me, the comfort of this compared to my part bike is great, easy to move out of the shed for me, I'm 5 10 and 90kg so maybe like this fellow says, just a personal issue

I looked at this bike along with the F900 and the F850 GS I am 6foot tall and with 14.5 stone and I still found it a heavy bike to get off the stand. In the end I went with the F850 GSA this is still a heavy bike but is more comfortable to ride. As my last point, I agree with everything you say about it for the passenger i wont be carrying one but still good info

TMF... you make a very valid point regarding the livability of the XR. I used to own a K1600GT and did a fair bit of touring on it where it was fantastic. However, other than for longer tours, it sat in the garage as it was a pain to move around, at over 700lbs! Eventually I swapped it out for a GS which works well for touring and its much easier to live with on a daily basis.

I really like your reviews on the new XR.I have a F900XR and took the S1000XR out for a test ride last week Saturday (I Have owned the previous generations of the S1000XR). After watching your videos I decide to try the new S1000XR ,and I can happily say that I part exchanged my F900XR for the new S1000XR last week after I done the test ride. The 900XR is a brilliant bike I had it for 6 months now and done over 5000miles on it , but the new S1000XR just gives you that WOW, happy felling when you ride it!!! Thanks to you Andy I bought the new XR, and I can't wait for it to arrive.Hopefully I will get it end September! Thank you for all the reviews.

I think your verdict it is pretty much bang on. When I replied before I think XR is great off main roads and not so good on due to vibes and also low gearing in 6th! Also the price with extras is a lot. My thoughts are to spend the difference on an Aprilia RS660 and keep my GS for Commuting and longer rides. Another great vid!

TMF, we have something in common = wives who don’t like the XR. As for ‘restraint’ on bikes with ‘performance potential’ it will always be a challenge, especially for anyone doing comprehensive road tests or reviews. You should do IAM or RoSPA training = it’s not a magic wand solution but does help, and could make interesting RU-vid content (even if you fail the advanced test!).

I own the 2016 model. The vibes were bad at first but improved with some bar end weights and lead fishing weights (readily available here in Alaska) in the handlebars. I don't notice the vibrations at all now until I ride one of my other bikes and then get back on the XR. I purchased the KTM 1290 SD GT this year and I think the vibrations are more noxious on that bike than on the XR. However, the fun factor on both bikes far outweighs these little issues. If I wanted to be completely comfortable, I probably wouldn't be riding. If I was going for several thousand miles though, the GSA would definitely be my choice. Great review. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos.

Great honest review, once again. I am taking the leap, switching to a 2017 XR coming from a 2013 Multistrada 1200S. I do recognize your points of 'criticism' but I still think it's the better bike for me after test riding the MTS1200DVT, the Superduke GT (2016 model), the MTS950 and the 1290 Super Adventure S. The XR just feels more 'connected' for me with everything that's happening under those 17" wheels. But I will have to keep an eye on the speedo as you already mentioned 😬😬😇

If you don’t want vibes.... buy a Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer. In addition, the list price of the Versys will include all those « optional extras » you had to add to your 1000XR to bring it up to anywhere near the same spec.... the value of which will disappear when you go to trade it in.The Versys SE GT list price is £16299. Using the online BMW « configurator », to bring it near to the Versys SE GT, I got the XR price up to £17,455 without trying too hard. But the trade-in or resale value will always be based on the basic list price of £14,285. Plus, the Versys is tuned for low down, evenly spread torque, not bhp bragging rights and ludicrous top speed. So instead of fighting to keep it under control as you did, the power is just what you want, when you want it, and is all that you need but manageable and user-friendly. PS I bought my Versys 1000 SE GT in August 2020 and I’m still smiling!

I've had 2 XR's and I think you are fairly spot on. They are brilliant to ride anywhere, touring, daily blasts etc and the vibrations disappear in a few days of ownership. However - I would also add cost of ownership. They are expensive to buy, eat tyres at £250 a go and only get 120 miles to a tank ridden "properly". Some of the MK1's suffered from dodgy camshafts so you would never own one without a BMW warranty. Also, I am 58 with 15 years + no claims bonus, live in a decent postcode with no convictions or accidents and Hastings insurance wouldn't insure me because their underwriters don't like the bike, so I had to get "dearer" insurance elsewhere. I loved mine but just couldn't afford to keep riding one.

I owned the 2016 model XR and traded it for a MultiStrada 1260. Far happier with the Duc, mostly because of the engine. Both handle great, are super comfortable and have loads of electronics. But the Multi throws power everywhere in the rev range. The XR was anemic and boring at anything below 80 mph. I think that’s why it “eggs you on to go fast”. It’s so uninspiring at low speed that you break the law to keep it fun. And yes the Multi doesn’t have the XR vibration issue, but I did over 20K miles on my XR and quickly learned to avoid floating at 5K on the rev counter and it became a non-issue. Both bikes proved super reliable in my hands - another nice touring feature. Think you can’t really make a bad choice between the 2, but to me at least an inline 4 is the wrong engine for this style of bike - not enough low end grunt. Another great review - thanks for your awesome content!

It doesn’t sound like you’re actually ridden one. This bike can be ridden sedately or like you stole it I love mine it’s two bikes in one for me. A bit vibey at 70mph 5000revs but it is what it is and there’s no such thing as a perfect bike you all need to stop analysing it and spend more time riding. Enjoy life.
@ronboe6325
@ronboe6325 3 года назад
Vibrations: Ufdah, I've been reading about them and talking with guys about vibrations since the '70's and in general terms the only conclusion I could come up with - high frequency vibes are bad, low frequency vibes are; at best - good. At worst, not a bad thing. Then you have folks that don't want any (starting with the original Goldwing owners) and those that want the big power pulses of a mighty V twin or steam engine. Everyone seems to dislike the chainsaw vibration high frequency ones though, which you seem to be describing at certain points in the rev range with the S1000XR (and my CB1100 does at certain rev ranges, but with such a low amplitude that I don't feel it all the time). Character is also a funny attribute. For me, on long rides, I want lots of comfort and no character - or as little as possible. Short rides through the twistie bits character can be a plus but I have yet to ding a bike because it lacks character. However; when it comes to people I do prefer some character. :^) That said, it's nice to have ridden enough bikes you KNOW which ones will be a good fit for YOU and which ones, as nice as they may be, are simply a poor fit. I sense a shift in my life where the Goldwing, once a brass ring to strive for, is sliding into the "poor fit" catagory - before I've even had a chance to own one. :(

I’ve been lucky enough to own the S1000XR, a V4 Streetfighter and a 1200 MultiStrada. I’m keeping my twin Multi because it’s such a great touring engine - great at virtually any speed. All great bikes, but for the role the twin seems like an ideal choice. Having ridden the V4 the power sounds interesting but it’s uninspiring low speed performance makes it less appealing to me, at least on paper. As always you don’t know until you ride it though right?

Re the vibes.... I've owned 2 of the older version (the more vibey) and yes it vibrates. But to me that's part of riding a motorbike. It's never unbearable and in a way reminds me I'm riding a beast of a bike. The handling and the power are amazing as is the 50 to 53 mpg I almost always achieve. I did notice in your initial XR video that you were riding with a bit more “zest” than normal ( or at least what were are allowed to see ! ) and as you say the bike does make you feel like you have god like skills . This bike is different to many other rides………most bikes are easy to ride at normal speed but need skill to ride fast , whereas the s1000xr is the other way around. Its very easy to ride fast and safe , but needs a different skill to ride it normally and in a relaxed touring way. My tips for riding this bike ‘bit’ slower and for distance touring are…. Don’t use the quick shifter all the time! just clutch it through the gears. The bike has plenty of torque low down so Short shift either 1st -3rd-6th or even 1st -4th -6th It works for me and gives me the perfect bike …………..nuts one minute and the next , sort of relaxed when I want it

I've owned many GS's over the years and just sold my '18 GSA and purchased a beautiful 2020 S1000XR... BEST BIKE I'VE EVER OWNED! Smiles by the miles, hands down a better riding and performing motorcycle. It is FAR LIGHTER than a GS, and despite what reviewer says, is FAR EASIER to move around than a GS - easier to get on/off centerstand, and light and easy to move around compared to the GS. Been riding for 50+ years, owned many, many bikes - this is the best road bike I've ever owned - period. Vibs worst at 70 to 75, but not bad at all, and every other speed completely not present at all (will notice at 70 if wrongly in 5th gear). Brakes are awesome, ride/handling awesome, electronics are awesome, bike is put together extremely well. Will be putting a Russel Daylong seat as there is NO STOCK seat worthy of keeping on any bike, IMO. But cup seat is superior, especially for acceleration forces that will make you smile every time you ride it. Actually for the price can't believe they can sell such high tech for that. Zero percent financing right now makes it a no brainer.

BTW, bike is split personality... a smooth joy for normal riding plenty of torque for normal situations... but get it above 7,000 RPMs and it turns into a complete carnival ride. Super fun, handles power immaculately well.

Hi, I bought a 2018 xr after reading many reviews over last couple of years and after riding full sports all my life its a revelation, makes everything easier by far,I've always been a bit of a hooligan and thought an xr might help me rein that in and keep my urges for the track on my blade.....didn't happen lol (well not for long ) the xr can do it all with decent tyres on it, adding comfort and durability I'd recommend to anyone to at least try 1,I doubt many people would be disappointed, unless it's all about the looks ( ie all the gear no idea) try 1 ,if ya not happy you'll get a good trade in for it anyhoo 😉

Quick addition to my earlier comment ,I'm 56 5' 9 and my xr has been lowered by bmw when I bought it, I must say about the weight comment from TMF ,its not IMHO a heavy bike to maneuver in and out of garage at all and once riding on the road feels super light and maneuverable

I have had a 2016 model for two years now (second riding season with it in Upstate NY - albany area). I agree...I feel mine lacks character. It's def hard to put my finger on. I want to love this bike, but just don't. Its very hard for me to come to terms with. Last bike I owned was a 2009 Monster 696, so I wanted more power and more comfort, which I have mostly gained. I find the 2016 XR a bit tall for me being 5'7" with a 32 inch inseem. I just purchased the Sargent 'low" seat. So far the seat feels hard and I noticed a few pressure points (only ridden about 15 miles on it so far-hopefully this weekend I will get a good ride in). The sargent seat def lets me get more of my foot down and I feel more confident (I laid the XR down last season on a sloped gravel road and it took away some of my confidence thats for sure). The bike def wants to move and its a pleasure when you open up the throttle. Vibes....for sure, they are there. Sometimes it bothers me, other times it doesnt (sometimes I find myself using this as an excuse to look for another bike). I have ridden the 2020 R1250RS as a loaner bike this season too...and honestly I wasn't in love with that either (maybe BMW seems to lack character, for me, over my old Ducati). I find myself always looking for the next best thing...and right now the XR is the only bike that fists that bill...even though I'm not 100% in love with it.

I've put 1,200,miles on my 2023 now. M model w/ Akrapovic exhaust & forged wheels. 55 year-old sport bike rider... not sure there's a better old-man's sport bike out there! ZX-6,ZX-7,ZX-9, SV-650, ST-1300 (mistake), FZ-1(lovely), FJ-09(now the tracer). Once the factory unlocks the 8,000rpm redline at 600 miles, this beast really wakes up. Glad to have wheelie control for those 2nd gear, 9,000rpm pulls! The brakes are fantastic. Either the 5,500rpm buzz is getting better, or I'm getting used to it. There are better tourers out there, but not better old-man sport bikes! I have a semi-rigid soft bag strapped to the back & an MRA windscreen. Expecting my 1st ticket any time now 🙄

My 2011 CBF1000fa is smooth as silk, plenty quick and nimble. Thinking about upgrading, but I am struggling to find a better sports-tourer. I like the look of this bike, but can't imagine it would be a better, more comfortable or more reliable bike than my current ride. Thinking about a newer Africa Twin 1100, a GW or a F6B to be honest...they would be a little more comfy for my riding partner...

Thank you for this informative series of reviews. I’m looking at sport-touring bikes after owning a Ninja 650 for 7 years (my first bike after a the 250 that I learned on). Although I have some experience, I don’t ride consistently so I see myself as a beginner intermediate rider. I think this BMW might be too much of a step up for me in power. (Do you agree ?). The dealer network in the US for BMW is great but the base prices on their website are misleading - by the time you add all the “packages” you would want, the this bike becomes -very- expensive.

Yes typical BMW that - and I don’t think it would be too much of a leap after the 650, just take it easy to start with, you’ll soon adapt! Enjoy….

Interesting final review. I think I would take the S1000R over this, if this XR is so sport orientated and maybe the GS for touring or maybe the KTM SD 1290 GT instead. On the issue of getting it up off the kickstand: It seems to me the kickstand is too short and/or angled too horizontal when extended. It seems like someone good at metalworking might be able to fabricate an adapter to mount between the kickstand and the bike, that could solve both issues.

I have to admit this was a bike I didn't really "get" before these vids, and I still don't fully, But I think you helped a lot - sports bike people who are looking at adventure bikes or sports tourers, maybe something a bit more practical or for a different purpose, but still want that true sport bike performance. I chose a 2019 v-strom 650 because of the dealer experience (in Northern Ontario Canada) we don't have a BMW or any big fancy dealership within 4 or 5 hour ride. This and me being new to riding I and the misses thought it best to keep it simple for now. I however really like this bike. I chose the v-strom because I thought a would do some gravel roads but in reallity like Bruce I hate off road. Lol I really like this bike! And think it tickes all the boxes.

I have a GS1200 Rallye and also recently bought a current generation VStrom 650. I really like the GS but the VStrom cost about 1/3 and, in real world riding, has to be more like 75- 80% of the bike. The GS definitely has better off road capability but my off road riding is usually where the tarmac ends and the unpaved logging road begins. Where you are in Northern Ontario, the VStrom makes a lot of sense.

lugging it around. As you say side stand will not help. The GS might be heavier, but as I understand the natural low weight of the boxer twin means you're going to have a lot of leverage on the bars. I guess the inline 4 holds its weight higher up, thus less leverage.

Strange thing vibration, different riders have different concerns, you have low frequency vibrations :Ducati Multistrada or BMW 1200 GS or any V twin ,I think of spanners in a rusty toolbox, I can’t tolerate that vibration , but most road testers never mention it (or notice). BMW 100 XR I found no problem. BMW 1200 GS or XR. XR for me ! Triumph Tiger 900 , or Tiger 800, 800 for me . Hay ho all are good fun !

I agree that vibration can be a bit funny. I had a mid-90s Ducati 900SS and the first week or so, it put my arms to sleep . . . then it didn't. I also thought the forward lean was extreme then it started feeling as if I were sitting almost upright. We get used to things and they cease to intrude.
