For the 2020 model year, the Chevrolet Bolt EV (now entering into its fourth year of production) was given a larger-capacity battery pack than its predecessors.
While the capacity increase is just 6 kilowatt hours -- taking the car from 60 kWh to 66 kWh -- the battery cell chemistry is also improved, allowing for a theoretically faster DC quick charging experience.
But is it worth upgrading to the 2020 Bolt EV if you're coming to the end of a lease for the 2017 Bolt EV? Is it worth extending your current lease (possible with GM as long as you do so before your final three months are up)? Is it worth buying if you're new to electric cars?
Or is it worth waiting for the next-generation of electric cars coming from GM in the next few years?
Watch the video above to find out more, support us with the provided links, and let us know what you think below -- but remember to keep your comments civil!

@@willaerley7140 That depends on how long you keep it. I still have my Volt I purchased 2013. I have seen that Model 3 used prices dropping as more coming on the used market. At some point I will get a Model Y but at this point budget is more important.

Matt Stehouwer True! If you keep your cars for 7+ years, than depreciation becomes less of a factor. However, if you get a problem car or just hate it, it might be hard to get rid of it. Used Model 3s are still selling for same as new prices on Carvana. I know it’s ridiculous and won’t last.

Phenomenal review! I've been researching the 2020 Bolt for a few weeks now on RU-vid / forums / Reddit / Twitter and you consolidated so many specific details in this video especially with the comparisons to the older model years. I'm excited to see the 2022 reveal this weekend, but most likely I will lease a 2020 because of the huge discounting and don't care about having Super Cruise.

It needs a light in the charge port! It needs an option to coast! It needs a way to wire for trailer lights. The front seat heaters are wimpy (though the rear seats are good). It needs a HEAT PUMP! It needs a smooth belly pan for better aero drag. The biggest problem on our 2017 Premier is the front passenger wheel well carpet has pulled away from the side trim - and it looks pretty knarly.

Near the front door competes with handicap parking and invites being iced. A bit of distance for some respect to the handicap and avoid assholes would be my preference. Then again, I've been driving for five years with a valid handicap hanger and I still do not use handicap parking for respect to those who really need it. I think it's a bit entitled to be asking for recharge stalls next to the front door simply because you're privileged enough to purchase an electric car as they are still markedly more expensive up front, sure operational costs are way less but it's the up front costs that are a barrier to entry and exclude the disadvantaged from overall long term savings, which is particularly true in the US where the tax credits really can only be claimed by people with the taxes to benefit from it with instead of at the transaction itself as it is in other countries. It's like they want the poor to remain poor.

Just bought a 2021 and so far I am loving it. I still have my fuel burning car because it's in great shape and they didn't offer me anything near what it is worth. I still have a bit of range anxiety but I am quickly getting over that. I find myself choosing to drive the bolt because it's such a pleasure to drive. It's smooth as silk an zippy too. Instant heat from the heater on cold mornings. No shifting down when you punch it. And dead quiet except for road noise on the freeway. I have a 50 mile round trip commute. They let me plug in there and it recharges about 40 miles during the day making my commute cost under $1.

The incremental charge level is also a feature in my 2019 Bolt LT. While I believe the Bolt is a great car as it is. I also agree with you, when you say Chevy could have done better. I have no interest in driver assist features other than standard cruise control. But, the seats hurt my back after about an hour. And charging for DC fast charging is just a money grab. EVs do not need 259 miles of range unless they are going to be used on long trips. And if you do long trips, you must have DC fast charging.

Those of us in the San Joaquin Valley Air Quality District can get a $3000 rebate on top of the State's $2000 rebate; bringing the real purchase price down to about $26k.

Hi There, the Bolt EV does not have a radar system. The entire Pre-Collision Braking is basis the Camera System - just like the BMW i3. However, the i3 does have adaptive cruise control that relies solely on the camera system. Just like in the Gen 2 Volt, you can get pre-collision braking without Adaptive Cruise, but if you want adaptive cruise its an additional package which adds the radar system (in the front bow tie). Cheers

Thank you for the thorough report. At 01:55 onward, the headroom appears to be less than I remember while driving my brothers 2019 Bolt EV. Did you raise the seat to it's highest level or are you very tall? Otherwise, something that has bugged me about the Bolt EV is it's very tight wheel-well/strut-tower to tire clearance (it's has much less than the clearances for a Toyota Corolla's front wheel-well, drive area as a comparison). I believe you cannot fit normal snow-chains/cable-chains onto the Bolt EV drive wheels without damaging the vehicle. That's a show stopper in the winter; driving California State Route mountain roads. Has anyone else discovered a tire-chain system to fit the Bolt EV? I've guessing that the C.H.P. checkpoints won't allow snow-socks to pass through the chain-control roadways. The Konig chain company doesn't list any snow-chain fitments for the Bolt EV. I haven't any experience with the TM3, the Kia Niro and the Nissan Leaf, but Konig snow-chain company does list solutions for them. So what happened with the Chevrolet Bolt EV design process? I positive that it snows in Detroit & South Korea. But short of snowy mountain weather, I think the Bolt EV should be an awesome daily driver car for long distance commuting for those of us commuting 25,000 miles per year. And for the driver's seat? ...try a wooden-bead seat cover for awhile on any car seat.

Typical car "teams" are set up which would require a committee with people from: "brake", "software user interface", "interior ergonomics"(button people), "wiring harness" and "outsourcing/supply chain". It's not just software for this car design. We are proud of our family members that worked for this company in the past, now I think GM is in trouble.

You can take a look at Comma AI. comma.ai/ It's a self-driving system you can add to a car that has lane keeping assistance which some models of the bolt do have. They do not officially and automatically support the Bolt EV. However there are people out there who have done custom programming and made it work. That gives you self-driving, and maintaining following distance. You can search around on RU-vid for Chevy Bolt EV and open pilot or, comma AI or self-driving. Get in touch with some of those people. I believe the system costs about $1200. It's a pure plug and play system on some vehicles, Toyota Prius and Toyota Corolla 2016 and up. It does not require you to continue to touch or hold the steering wheel, it does however require you to be paying attention. The system looks at your face and if you turn away or are not paying attention it turns off. But it is not constantly nagging you every 30 seconds to touch the steering wheel.

Spot on comparison. I think you definitely nailed it. I really wish the automotive press would give a little bit more praise to the bolt EV. GM made a really really good car considering the time it came out 50 kW charging was the fast that you could find anywhere. I do want to mention that I think the charging curve in the 2020 is a little different than you explained. From 0 to about 55%, it's going to charge pretty much exactly like the 2017 to 2019. Beyond that 55% where that giant step down occurred in the older models you will now see a slow downward slope from there to 80%. I believe I read from 0 to 100% charge It saves you about 30 minutes of charge time. If you're on a significant road trip like you were that adds up big time. But I totally agree with you They should have up the peak charging rate to 75 kW and they should have upgraded the AC internal charger. Or they should have simply done nothing and waited until 2021 2022 to make the changes.

We have the same target charge level system on our 2019. . .I never charge it beyond 70% (summer) or 80% (winter) unless we're going to Toronto or on some other longer run ⚡🚙 This may put a smile on your face - last year I started taking the Bolt to our local car cruises and found it got just as much (if not more) attention as our other Chevy, an original unrestored 1956 Bel Air. See, the car guys & gals pretty much know the old cars but not the electrics; and they're very interested 😃 (No cruises this year of course due to covid 🙁) Stay safe & healthy Nikki

The 2019 Bolt also allows target charge settings. Also, there has been considerable discussion on a popular Bolt forum and the consensus seems to be the Bolt does not have radar sensors at all. Collision avoidance is camera-based. The theory is that GM may have wanted to get adaptive cruise control working using only cameras but didn't feel comfortable with the implementation.

Hi Nikki, thanks for the thorough review. Just wanted to point out that the BoltEV actually does not have a radar sensor for adaptive cruise control. The car's forward collision warning system is entirely camera based and there is no radar sensor in the front of the vehicle. While there are camera based adaptive cruise control systems, such as the one in the BMW i3 and Subaru's EyeSight system, they are much less reliable than radar based ones. That said, the decision to not include the radar sensor on this car is baffling since the incremental cost per unit would likely have been nominal.

I believe the Bolt has never had radar (power use in an EV was GMs reason, just like no electric seats), so no adaptive cruise control. GM used a camera for the forward facing safety features. I tried it for the first time about a month ago as I make occasional trips to the Portland area to visit my daughter and son-in-law and I noticed that, when using one of the 50kw Electric Avenue chargers in SE Portland it did charge near 45kw whereas in the past the max rate was 38kw and when it hit around 70% SOC it stayed near the 35kw rate where in the past it would have gone down immediately to 23 kw charge rate. So I did find an improvement there. Interested to know what your experience has been with this new car or your 2017 Bolt and if my experience mirrors others.

Don't sleep on Chevy dealer discounts, everyone. If you're considering the Tesla model 3 vs the bolt premier because they're "around the same price," don't forget a lot of Chevy dealers are offering $10000 or more on the hood, whereas with the model 3 you're paying the MSRP.

I currently drive a 2020 Bolt, but I've also had a gen1 and gen2 Leaf and a gen2 Volt. The Bolt has a lot of problems not mentioned. While decontenting is mentioned, there are some things you just expect in a car that the Bolt does not deliver, at least not the version I have. There is no balance or fader control, and best I can tell there are no rear speakers. There are no rear cup holders. You cannot unlock (or lock) the doors from the hatch. There is no padded compartment for glasses. The shoulder belts do not height adjust. Nikki complains about the level 2 charging repeatedly, but the level 3 is what is the real problem. 50kw is 10 year old technology, and even 50kw is not sustained above 50% charge. Chevy charges plenty to get something a decade old. A car with 66kWh should charge at least 150kw on level 3. To pay for this slow of charging is ridiculous. There are also a lot of dumb design things. Why are parts of the dash covered in something that looks like white protective plastic that someone forgot to remove. Why is the seat adjustment lever all the way to the inside so you have to climb into the car and bash your knees to move the seat back. Why is the headrest so close to your head that you get slapped in the back of the head on any bumps. Which also raised the question, why is the ride so bumpy. I don't understand why I have to reset the radio source to Bluetooth to stream music every time I get into the car. My other cars could remember my last setting. Also should mention that regularly my phone does not show, and I have to reboot the car, or if my wife is in the car, I can't even connect to my phone. There is too much to complain about here. I know there are many owner who absolutely love their Bolt, just like there are those who still think the Volt was the best car ever made, and the Aztek had the highest owner loyalty ever. Some people just double down on bad decisions. Not me. This is just the short list of things I dislike about the car. I am currently considering how to get out of this POS, and wish the resale was as good a Nikki claims. I should mention that I never had any problem with battery degradation in a Leaf. I don't doubt that has happened to some Leaf owners, but Nikki talks like it is a universal problem with Leafs. Probably just confirmation bias.

I would suggest that the reason the Bolt does not have adaptive cruise control is right there in the name of the car, Chevrolet. GM culture, of which I once was a part, is that the low end brands they have will always have inferior features than the higher cost lines. A long time ago they had a set of cars across their brands called the J-Cars. That line included a so called Cadillac, the Cimmarron. It shared much in common with its Chevy sibling, including the unreliability, but it did have many "luxury" features not possible to have in the Chevy.

True, that's a way to get people to upgrade to the next model when they finally put out one with Supercruise. Sell 4-5 years of slightly flawed Bolts, then finally come out with the one people would want and then they are suddenly upgrading. Twice the money from the consumer. I'd say GM knows exactly what they are doing.

The EPA is a more realistic for average driver that guns it off lights and electric cars are worse as they just make formula adjustments for mileage. You won't be able to lease the 2020 model today. You can only lease the year the car is. I would look at residual value if you are going to purchase and see what they are going for. The banks can mess with residuals for a particular model as they set the rates. The 2021 Bolts can be had for as little as $19K. Which is a really good deal!

I returned my 2017 for a 2020 Bolt. I got a Premier for $31.5K out the door, way below Tesla. Although the money I made the last couple of months on Tesla stock did completely pay for my Bolt! The rear view camera is HD now, my 2017 didn't have HD, I think that's new for 2020. I disagree, I have noticed more range in my 2020, especially in North East winters. I'm charging to 90% and right now in summer my range is showing 265 miles. My 2017 showed about 235 for the same 90%. There have been some tweaks, torque steer seems to be better in the 2020. I agree, the stock tires aren't great for grip but they're not that bad. Sure if you race around you can notice it but under normal driving they're fine. I didn't buy it for a hot hatch, I bought it for a utilitarian long range EV.

I also returned my Jan 2017 Bolt Premier Lease (as the Residual was way to high to by) for a Jan 2020 Bolt Premier Lease (with lower payments). The HD Cameras are a HUGE Improvement over the 2017 and also being able to select which Cameras you want to view (Front, Back, Left, Right). That feature alone is almost enough to justify upgrading to 2020 over 2017!

I just bought a Chevrolet Bolt EV LT with the Driver Confidence Package and Comfort & Convenience Package, which doesn't include lane keep assist or pedestrian sensing. They have an $8,400 incentive from GM and the dealer had an additional $1,200 incentive. With my Prius C trade in, I paid less than $20,000 for the car. With the Prius C I learned to drive in a way that maximized fuel economy. It has helped with getting great distance out of charges on the EV. I, too, am disappointed with the lack of adaptive cruise. I really like the "L" mode and one-pedal driving in the city. But, it needs to be in "D" mode when using cruise. Otherwise, if you tap the On-Demand button to turn off the cruise, the regen braking is too much in "L" mode. It's also important to note that, if you press and hold the On Demand regen, the brake lights do not come on. Drivers behind you do not know that you are slowing or stopping by your brake lights. The DC Fast Charging is great - I can get a charge from 20 to 80% in about an hour. And, I've joined the local EV club to get 50% off charging. There are also a few free charging stations in town. I think this is a great entry-level EV and I plan to keep it until I see what Tesla will come out with in terms of a compact model. If it's too Cybertruck freakish, I'll keep the Bolt EV.

I have a 2021 Premier and I noticed it's missing a cubby overhead for my sunglasses and Homelink (built-in garage door opener). My 2005 Prius, 2012 Prius V and 2007 Infiniti G35 Coupe have those two features. The ride, due to the short wheelbase, can be choppy on irregular surfaces. And the run-flat tires are super stiff. I needed a city car, and the Premier is going for a fantastic monthly payment for a 36 month lease through April 2021 through Costco. My $44,000+ Premier is just $280 a month with $1750 down including first month lease payment. Over 90% of Bolts are being leased. If you get the LT, the lease payment can drop under $200 and only in San Francisco, the payment can be under $150 a month because of SF City subsidy. Call the Costco Auto # and get a Member Certificate and take it to your Chevy dealer. Tesla can't compete with this deal.

As I assume most folk in the USA (and this is one of the few places in the World you can buy one?) lease, rather than buy outright - once the rental expires on the vehicle you have, the natural thing to do would be acquire the one that is on sale from GM currently? I suspect the main reason why most car companies are still surviving is because everyone rents "new cars" and hands them back after the rental period. Most "buyers" to not have $25K+ to spend on a replacement when they hand their rental back.

It's a little bit more like a column shifter layout. I definitely would have preferred some type of joystick shifter in the bolt EV. Or a column style shifter. It gets it out of the way and opens up the center console space. Having a giant mechanical feeling shifter seems kind of dumb to me when you know inside there are just several little switches that get touched. But in general people dislike the Toyota Prius shifter for that very reason. It feels like it's little and it's going to break. Even though they don't. Hope you have a wonderful day be safe out there Some cars in the 50s had push buttons for gear selection.. But the button layout was the same PRNDL. In November of '18 my dealer found *one* in blue in the system. I paid a bit north of the $42,000 list price for them to go get it and I'm glad I did.
