All this gets me excited to see what the Z06 will be capable of. Truly excited to what kind of times its capable of putting down. Side note I'm actually impressed the non- track alignment z51 beat the ZL1 1LE. That's fairly impressive.
The tires on the ZL1 1LE were dead on the car we were able to review. With a new set of tires on a good day the ZL1 would easily beat the C8 in lap times. Fingers crossed we can have another go at the Camaro again next season and give it the lap time it deserves.
The McLaren did slow down before the finish line. The drag races are performed on one of the straights and there is a corner not too far after the finish line. The McLaren was hitting a higher speed than most other cars we raced so had to hit the brakes a little bit earlier to make the corner.

Your reaction with the C8 through the slalom told the story without words - the alignment makes turn in even better. Throttle House's horrific understeer nowhere to be seen.
The turn in on the C8 is actually quite good even with the factory alignment to be honest. I think a lot of journalists are playing it up for views or maybe they just don't know how to drive a mid engine car? Not really sure. But either way the track alignment certainly kicks things up a notch. I would have loved to have had a warm dry track to really test out the capabilities of the new alignment.

Interesting but with semi wet conditions and different tires then OEM it's hard to really know what the numbers tell. If you had used a tire (ie cup 2's) on the C8 that people are familiar with or put the new yokohama tire on both cars it would be a better comparison in my opinion.
From experience the Yokohama tire is faster on track. So we were hoping that the alignment and tires might make it keep up to the 650S. The weather wasn't part of the plan. lol.
@@colincaissie8724 Thanks for the response. I'm buying a new set in the next month for our 2020 C8. I have almost 10,000 miles on the C8 OEM tires and have liked them. Only tracked the Corvette once just this past weekend. I'll probably track it 2 or 3 times with the next set. Would you suggest the V601 over the OEM or Pilot Sport 4s. I ran the Pilot Sport 4s on the Camaro SS 1LE that we had and liked them. The Eagle F1 Supercar 3's that came on the Camaro were a slightly better track tire but we got NO mileage out of the tire. I do like a lot of predictable grip but don't want to pay for Cup 2's or Supercar 3's and reduced mileage. We mostly use the C8 for spirited twisties. Yes we drive a lot on weekends and rent it on Turo occasionally. It's not a daily driver. Have only had the car 3 months. Your thoughts?
@@howie32768 I really like the new V601. They are a little sportier than the Pilot Sport 4s and seem to have at least the same longevity. I personally would go for the Yokohama's if I was in your situation. And as you can see from the autocross portion they are pretty good in the wet.
I had Yokohama tires on 2 of my cars 2006 Pontiac GTO and an Infiniti Q60 with ADVAN Sport V105 both cars were abysmal in the wet. I almost died in my Q60 taking an on ramp too fast. I discovered Bridgestone potenza tires by accident on a leased Honda and never went back. Best brand in the rain.
C8 great bargain and hangs with super cars 2 to 3 times its cost, but McClarens are on a different level, one offs, so no contest really. Vette is heavier and less powerful. Too much GM marketing hype and lies associated with C8, and Vette fan boys won’t admit it. But I’d rather have the Vette for the ridiculous upkeep costs of the Mac. If money is no object, it’s the Mac all day.
Just commenting because I’m a pilot too & drive a C8! You are correct on everything though! I do love Mac though, gorgeous cars. I am sure their crew had to shoot a CAT ll on a day like that, lol. Cheers
Agreed! The C8 is amazing because of the value it offers. It isn't on the same level as the 650S but it is still an incredible car capable of amazing performance... at any price point! Your lucky to have one.
@@mikemccormick8115 it’s been an incredible car. Long Beach red, 3LT, natural dipped interior. Got it from Kerbeck in July after a long wait! Sadly, the C5 can only do CAT ll, long will be the days we can do auto land lol. Fly safe too!
I just love McLaren's philosophy of lightness being king. Prime example, the twin turbo V8 mid-engine car weighs like 400 pounds less than an n/a mid-engine car. There's a huge cost difference, but it's almost as if they designed the C8, realized it was heavier than the C7, and thought nothing of it because it has a bit more power.
But the c8 is still faster than the c7. On this track Colin tested c7 gs and was able to got a 1.17 which is slower than c8. It’s also kinda hard to build a budget sports car extremely light due to the cost. 350Z and 370Z are perfect example, it’s hard to make a powerful but relatively cheap sports car light
The Yokohamas didn't help the Corvette on the lap times. Michelin 4S are better tires. The track alignment for sure is faster with the 4S. Great Autocross time from the Corvette. It was easy to know that the McLaren was going to be faster because of the Biturbo 8 cylinders engine, just wait for the C8 Z06.
Based on our testing the Advan Apex V601's are a better track tire with a stiffer sidewall, more outright grip and better resistance to overheating. The 4S' are more geared towards comfort than outright performance. It will be interesting when we get the C8 back out in equal dry conditions to see if it can put down a better time than the 4S'.
I did get on the brakes just before the finish line. We don't have a lot of run off at the end of the straight we use for the drag races. And being a very cold day and driving on summer performance tires I had to brake a little bit early to slow the car down. Considering the 650S was crushing the Corvette I didn't mind braking a bit early either. haha.
Love this channel. Your content is so well produced and I am obsessed with seeing cars on track. Great video and well informed commentary. Looking forward to some track time in my C8 next summer. Just got it last week so I need to break it in and, like you, I’m a northerner so the weathers going to go bad here over the next few weeks. Keep up the great work Colin and Track Attack!
I don't think those Yokohama's are even close to the MPS 4S tires! They don't hold up long for track use but for a couple of laps they are practically race tires. I keep trying different tires and in the dry the Eagle F1 Super car tires are close, but all around wet/dry, street use, comfort, nothing comes close. I think if you had a set of those MPS4S on that Vette your time would have been a lot better. Then again that Mclaren with those tires would have done better as well so... Your testing is getting much better, keep it up, they will come. Maybe do a collaboration with your old buddy from Throttle house. More cars, multiple drivers setting their best lap in various cars. That could be fun.
The Advan Apex V601's are more track focused than the PS4S and provide a lot more grip. We wanted to use the A052's however they don't make them in C8 sizing yet :(
Kinda dumb comparison. Put SAME tires on them 1. Then 2 why not setup 650s to track alignment too? I love my 650s but still silly to not do same to both to compare. I don’t care who “won” honestly just would have been fun to see a similar setup to compare properly

The 650Lt is a little too much for the C8 it should go against a zo6. A better comparison is c8 vs 570s(562 hp, 443 tq) I see the edge going to the c8 after watching this video. Why act like the 570s doesn't exist..instead of using a 650hp 650lt lol
If this was a warm dry day you would have seen a bigger gap in lap times. This is a small track where HP doesn't give you much advantage and it was in conditions that didn't let me use the power. I couldn't go full throttle on the 650S until half way through 3rd gear and even then it was a bit of a scary thing in those conditions. haha.
@@colincaissie8724 I have no doubt! But I imagine even those will close with the next C8. But most owners of these cars will never see those speeds, gaps, or tracks. The argument for an additional 200k will still be an interesting one for most.
@@nwilkerson2365 true! The Z06 model will be the car to really upset the supercar regime. And yes most C8 owners will never take their car to the track or push them hard.
We wish we could get million dollar cars to compare against the C8 :) But if you mean supercars, its to see how far the C8 has evolved over the C7 and if it has pushed up market from sports car to challange the supercars.
Why even bother in the wet. Auto x on the new yok's in the wet is absolutely pointless. Those tires which I use for autox and time attack are no good in the rain. I mean if it's wet I wouldn't even bother. Complete waste of time.
Autocross competitions happen in the sun, rain or even snow. So you have to make due with what mother nature gives you. And actually Colin found the Yokohama's to be quite good in the wet versus other tires in the same category.
Lol for the price diference and the 1second diference the vette any time the vette makes look the mc laren like a rip off even if any other supercar the mc laren of any other overpriced car beat the corvette same way auto cross quater mile half or one mile or any other form of racing they all still look like rip off too much money for their performance and bad reliability those cars are known to be so corvette for life. you get price enough performance and best of all reliablity and cheap maintenance all the rest its just exclusivity what you are paing for and with that reluability oh boy are you losing money allright
Funny, whatever you guys do to make the C8 look better (special alignment, fresh tires, breaking the other car before finish line in the drag race etc.), it stays what it is - a great value for money sportscar - not more and not less...
There is a significant difference in hp, weight, aero. Vette should not keep up with the 650s. In the dry you would be 2-3 seconds slower. Just too much straight line performance
100% agree. I couldn't fully use the power in either car because of the conditions. So the times were not too far apart. On a warm dry day the 650S would have had a few seconds lead without a doubt.
I don’t think 650s will be 3 seconds faster than the vette. Since a 720s with trophy r was able to get a 1.13 at Cayuga. I would say 650s with p0 will be 1-1.5 seconds faster than the c8
@@itchyonion3559 good point. I'm pretty sure the 650S could do a 1:15 on a good day without too much trouble. But I think the C8 with the alignment might be able to get into the 1:15's on a perfect run with the new alignment. Hopefully we get a chance to find out next year!
Curiosity “why do you test a stock new C8 corvette versus other cars and not test a C8 Z06 or a ZR1”. To me it invalidate all your test or basically your wasting or time.
You buy a Corvette because you're not Rich but want speed, you buy a Mclaren because you can. Same with watches those that just want to tell the time buy a Casio or something, you buy a Rolex because you can, quality, prestige and status comes guranteed along with telling the time while looking good.
Nope, head to head Mclaren vs. Corvette for me, feel asleep waiting . This is why Oh Canada! Is not known for producing a single thing anyone would want to pay money for. Boring, monotonous, drones on and on
the z06 destroys mclaren 765lt, 720s , porsche 911 GT3 at racetracks around the world none of these cars can hang with a z06 at the track where true performance counts
