Competitors have better interior? Fiat 500 looks Premium and has best design. Competitors in this class are boring. This is why FIAT 500 is best seller for so many years. 🤩🤩🤩

I hired a 500 in France last year and enjoyed driving it and it never felt uncomfortable. I spent time sitting in traffic jams, on the Autoroute and twisty country roads and the ride felt a bit bouncy at times but not jarring.

I guess he really dislikes the fiat 500, Europe’s best selling city car that’s been around 13 years and still selling bucket loads for fiat. I’ve had the 500s and I’m 6 ft and never felt uncomfortable in the 500. Two thirds of his review was slating it and promoting other brands like i10 that have needed 3 new designs instead of telling us about the mild hybrid system.

Likewise, I drive a used 2013 500e after my Wife turned in her ICE car and took over driving my 2018 Chevy Bolt. The original 500e is zippy and responsive, the leaked 2021 500e looks sharp, though the range is reportedly only another 30% more? don't think I'd be willing to pay full price. A mere $5K for a used orange 500e as a short range runabout is perfect - planning to drive until the battery croaks or the wheels fall off :).

It's guilty of not being a VW, with their "accurate" emissions and economy figures, squishy dashboards and mechanical reliabilty (not). I had a Fiat Panda for ten years, and it was the most reliable car I've ever owned, and perfectly comfortable over long distances.

Indeed. We had three Pandas in our family when I was growing up, all of them were infinitely more reliable than the two BMWs I've owned over the last 10 years. I am in the market for an affordable car for going to the shops and the occasional day out - I pick up my new 500 Star hybrid this afternoon. Very excited. The German and Japanese competition just look incredible boring in comparison. Even Clarkson is a fan of the 500.

I'm not sure if the reviewer knows anything about 'fun' cars, let alone the Fiat. Maybe he googled a few bits about what to say in the review. I want real drivers reviewing the Fiat. Because, it's not everyone's car - strictly for those that still like driving and want to have a nice big grin when attacking a corner :)

It's essentially got an IMA system, just not a very powerful one. The CR-Z and Insight had those and were still classed as hybrids (though they were much stronger) - a hybrid doesn't necessarily mean a vehicle that can run solely on battery power, rather one that - in this case - can harvest and use otherwise lost energy. A mild hybrid is really a halfway house between full ICE and full hybrid, so, er, a hybrid hybrid.

I actually don't mind that the car is old by now, with the 2016 facelift it still looks fresh thanks to it being retro styled and the interior is superior to most city cars with the exception of the i10 pretty much. It's the platform being old that's the issue.

The i10.... hands down the best in the A segment. If if only the engine was a bit faster....The problem with Fiat is that they keep refreshing old models, instead of actually making new generations. Fiat has barely made any new models for the past few years. They are pretty much living on 1 car, the 500. And yet, all they do with it is..... basically nothing. No matter how many face-lifts an old model gets, it will always keep lagging behind. I mean they only refreshed the infotainment screen a bit, made a new steering wheel and added a menu to the instrument gauge. Sure, they don't need to change much on the exterior, but i'd love to see a new interior.

@@CyAn-S The concept of "designs and technology getting old" is a modern phenomenon. In our current generation of human beings, it is normal to redesign automobile models every 3-5 years; whereas before, models lasted more than a decade. Original Fiat 500 made from 1957 to 1975, almost twenty years. The Porsche 911 Turbo (930) built from 1974 to 1989... Volvo 240 from 1974 to 1993... Mercedes E-Class W123 design lasted more than 10yrs. So it's not cars that are getting old, its our perception of whats "new" ....

The 500 is more of a fashion statement than a practical car. I've owned one and loved the way it looked inside and out but did find it uncomfortable for long journeys (no where to put your left leg other than hover it above the clutch!). For short journeys around town it was fine, and this is what it's for I guess. For a more practical family car Fiat's Tipo is much better. I had one of those for 3 years and 3 kids in car seats wasn't a problem for it. Crappy engines though. If I didn't have kids I'd probably still be driving the 500 or the Panda I also had. Good cheap fun cars.

DIY Astro you step your foot on the floor in front of the clutch. Real problems are: no lumbar support, no real armrests, nowhere to put a proper sized phone without scratching it or the car, badly designed but cute rev and speedos, scratchy backs of rear seats

I had a 500 for 10 years and there is, or certainly was, a small footrest to the left of the clutch on the centre console moulding which was perfectly adequate. (Right hand drive car)

I currently have one of these 500 mild hybrids as a courtesy car. My regular car is a Honda Civic Type S GT. Well, I was pleasantly surprised by the way this little Fiat 500 drives and handles. It's a fun car to drive. It oozes style and pizzazz. Most of my driving is around town. I'm thinking about buying one now!

I think comparing this car to the i10 is a bit "apples and oranges" in this otherwise fair overview. A better comparison with the Hyundai would undoubtedly be with the Panda (mild) Hybrid given that car's more practicality-focused design.

This is a very good citycar, very "tasty" and genuine. Other cars like the germans are artificial and overrated by the magazines. Japanise cars are good in terms of quality but without soul......after 3 years looks like museum cars ( also some germans are like this). The 500 still a fresh design car after 20 Years. When you buy a german car ,you will feel to have thrown you money because after 18 month a facelift comes out and your car looks old before you finish paying it.

I bought a fully electric 500 almost a year ago and I LOVE it! I’m sure if I had a regular engine I fiat I wouldn’t like it as much. But I am in America and it’s kind of out of place because of how absolutely tiny it is. Lol

5'11", and no discomfort with the 500 or the Panda. Only thing that's a problem is the rear view mirror which gets in the way so you have to bob your head around sometimes. I really really love the 500. In fact I think it is probably the coolest affordable car you can buy. Why? It's cute, funky, unassuming, and just a happy car. Driving one is just plain fun, and it doesn't look like you're compensating by getting a big, mean car to show off either :)

I do disagree with parts of the "rivals do everything better" bit. I've driven the Skoda Citigo a few times and it is definately, definately worse. Sorry Skoda. The 500 feels a much higher quality car in pretty much every aspect. Styling, interior finish, materials, engine and gearbox... This was in 2017 though so I'm not sure if they've gotten updates.

Missed the point completely! This design is iconic and in 20 years it will look sublime unlike the i10 and even the VW Up which are lovely appliances but lack the sheer joy that a 500 can give. (BTW l am not a Fiat fan and I do agree that the Hybrid branding is simply a marketing tool.)

The driving position is 10x more comfortable than any other car out there. All the manufactures are so hung up on laying you down in an uncomfortable, un-padded seat. My 500 gives me great vision around me and i don't feel like I'm climbing in and out of a space capsule when I egress. The other complaints were very nit-picky and this reviewer seemed to dislike the car going into the review. Thumbs down for me.

Maybe the author of the review should inform himself better about platforms and Fiat 500 updates. The platform does not date back to Panda 2003. The platform was upgraded for North America market. That modifications were introduced in european version some years ago (they also changed car name from 500 to "Nuova 500"). "Hybrid" the suzuki Ignis Hybrid uses the same "electrification" layout, as well as Mazda 3 M Hybrid and many others ...

I don’t particularly like fiats BUT this review does not feel right. This car has an electric motor, it has an ICE. It is a hybrid. The host shouldn’t even argue that. The most important thing is how it drives and if it is worth it. My guess is that if this iteration brings the CO emissions down even more so it is legalnto drive in city centres, then ot is worth buying it. As simple as that.

BMW used to call this kind of tech efficient dynamics. Its not really a hybrid if it can't travel under the power of more than one system. Even if it could only crawl a hundred yards through traffic I could forgive it but this isn't really a hybrid so much as an efficiency booster.

Hybrids are NOT green, by any definition. Maybe Plugin Hybrids, but on long trips those are basically gas cars.

Not true. First of all, there is no such thing as "green" in automobiles. Green is public transport, walking or biking. When we talk about full life cycle CO2 carbon footprint, real hybrids (not this shit) beat electric due to reliability (20+ years no major issues easily for hybrid toyota). In some countries like Poland, where electricity is made out of coal electric vehicles have bigger CO2 emissions per km driven than hybrids, so even that is not always better in electrics. And don't get me started about rare earths usage in electric cars. As I said: there is no green individual transportation, stop lying to yourself.

You drive your gas, diesel and hybrid car in populated areas = you're not better than some other brilliant mind in history, who thought gassing people is OK. I think the gentleman was German...

I dont know what kind of drugs this guy is doing but saying the drive and quality of a vw up ou kia picanto ia better than the 500...wtf? I work in a rent-a-car and appart of being more practical( you can always choose the panda over 500), the kia or vw are by any means more cobfortable or better build! Also the extras on the vw are minimal!!!

I dare say I drive my second 500 now at first a bossa nova white 1.2 duallogic lounge and now a bianco gelatico twin turbo Cabrio chip tuned to 105 Hp. The 500 is not nible??? Get a life!! Ok the turning radius is bigger then wished for but for the rest driving at high speed in twinsting narrow country lanes is what the 500 is all about hence the Abarth versions of it. For mywork I drove the VW driving yoghurt can several times, it always shocks me how sensitive that square from is to side winds (very logic indeed) and how far you are sunken into the interior that resembles an old Polo. And for the Chinese competitor, apart from bad fuel efficiency if you like the styling of that car go see a shrink. It looks like a 8 bit space invaders game gone wrong. Apart from being convinced, as Europeans support your European car manufacturers keep our economy healthy. I am alreay very curious about the new all electric 500 to save the future of this lovely excellent looking big small car. Capiche!! And reliability. I had in 4 years 65.000 km unexpected repair costs of € 35 on a 112.000 km 2010 Lounge. Thank you.

Meh, people buy FIAT 500s for the looks. And to be fair, they look cuter than the Hyundai and KIA city cars. But that is pretty much all the 500 has to offer. This type of ‘Hybrid’ in 2020 is pretty lame though. It really ought to be a pure EV.

Excellent review . No doubt in my mind that the Fiat is a Beautiful fun looking car - but I will not be purchasing a fiat or any other car on just it’s looks. It has to be safe, drive smoothly and essentially have excellent clear views from all angles when driving. Not bothered about fancy electronic.

I drove a rental Fiat 500 "Hybrid" and if there is a hybrid at all, it's an absolutely pathetic contribution to the performance of the car. The petrol motor is *always* on the only evidence of "hybrid" at all is a little regen icon that appears when coasting. I'm assuming there is a electric motor that gives a little performance kick to the engine but if so it's almost a waste of time and extremely misleading for such a prominent display of the word hybrid.

Pretty average review to be honest. We love our Star hybrid, over 60 mpg, now with 6 speed box, incredible turning circle, comfortable and airey with the fixed sun roof. Sold our Abarth 595C to tour Europe (eventually), more mpg, more luggage space and the ability to carry a small spare wheel. Navigation and sound system are brilliant and its very cute and fits in the garage..

What you save in buying the car you spend in fuel. 42 MPG is nothing to write home about considering you have to thrash these things to get anywhere, especially in hilly areas. A hybrid is long overdue, but why manual? "Mild" is also not the way to go. 53mpg is only 6 mgp better that honestjohn's real world figures for the 1.2 regular petrol. Seems like marketing BS to sell more cars to the ill informed.

And around 100 miles down the road the 500 (and everyone else) passes you as the Honda runs out of battery. The Honda e is a dog for all but the short range, relatively wealthy commuter.
