The Harley Davidson Ultra Limited is the motorcycle I would buy today ibut as you know I own 2018 Heritage Softail and im not quite ready to trade it in yet. After my long distance haul to Texas on my Heritage I am certainly interested in a touring bike but my Heritage is the perfect motorcycle for my daily needs as of today. I wanted to get out and ride it to give you my impressions and share with you what I think about the Ultra Limited.

I’ve got a 2015 and I’ve put a lot of miles on it. The heel shifter is a must imo. Rode to Sturgis from So. Cal earlier this year and it was a breeze with the Limited. Lots of storage and super comfortable. Those lower fairings have radiators in them so no storage pockets.
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
I thought the lower pockets still had some space for some storage. I believe I saw some locking pockets offered in the P&A catalog that showed installation with the radiators behind them.

Agree, the Challenger definitely force H-D to get off their asses and do some real upgrading. Hard to say which way I'd go if I were shopping for a touring bike.
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
Yeah JT. The Challenger is awesome but I tend to lean HD. Hopefully HD is working on a monoshock, power windscreen, and some additional LED's on their new touring bike that makes a purchase of an HD more palatable at the current price points. I personally won't buy a bike at this point until I see the next iteration of HD's touring bikes. I think it is coming (has to) sooner than later.

I test rode and considered the Ultra limited before buying my Roadmaster. HD had really good power, felt more powerful than the TS111 , handled as well in turns , radio was comparable. Where it sucked was ride quality, This was 2017 dual bending valve and it was super harsh over bumps . The wife was on back and the same bump that would nearly cracked a rib, the Indian would float over. My only other reservations are things you have mentioned about standard equipment value. LED all around for the Roadmaster, remote locking bags, and power windshield. As a traveler , I can tell you , the power shield is a big deal on trips, Victory made it standard equipment on the Vision in 2008, Indian made it standard equipment on their touring line in 2014 (first year release of CHieftain). BMW has it, Kawasaki, yamaha has it, Goldwing has it now, And it's 2020 model year and HD still cannot bring themselves to offer one even as an option on their touring line???
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
Thanks Jim!! I cant imagine HD ISNT working on a power windscreen. Honda and Indian both have them and HD is going to have to offer those things standard before people start feeling the value is missing.

My first Harley was and still is a '14 Limited. Also, I just bought a '20 Heritage. I kept the Limited because I do travel and I didn't think I would do long trips on the Heritage, which I still think I won't. I would probably do a weekend trip, but nothing longer. It's hard to say which one I like the best, but if my feet were held to the fire, I'd still prefer the Limited mainly because of more storage, navigation and tunes. I do agree its time for H-D to bring their touring line into the 21st century, especially the frame and suspension. It's ridiculous that you have to spend hundreds of dollars to make a touring model more comfortable for longer rides. Losing the heel shifter and the option to close the fairing vent gave me the impression that H-D cut corners only to save a few dollars. Anyway, thanks for the review!
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
Thanks Stephen. I think if HD rolls a bunch of the new Softail improvements into the touring bikes that they will hit a home run on the touring bikes. I really hope something big is coming. I also dont like the removal of the heel shifter. I think that should be provided and removed by the owner if they choose.

Feeling up on the tank is pretty much the seat. After an 1800 mile trip I was used to it and was pretty comfortable and I am 6 ft around 300 lbs so I need room but I have room. The road glide makes you feel less claustrophobic because of the fairing

I went back and forth for a long time on the Heritage vs. a Road King, or going all the way and getting a Street Glide. I'm a solo rider, so something like this is just seems like overkill for what I do. Maybe one day. Good overview and I mostly agree with your points on the styling and ergonomics--the touring bikes are definitely due for an overhaul. I do wish the motor company would expand the paint options on other bikes - that river rock gray is fantastic looking.

I have one of these bikes. I like it. That said, H-D is stuck in the past---in a lot of ways. Mine came with a garage door opener that would work with a 70s/80s era door operator. Sirius/XM is an option (?!) And on and on. RDRS is the only major selling point today. I had that on BMWs and KTMs years ago. As for the seat, switch to the hammock if it fits. That will get you off the tank.
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
I agree Cash Dollar. I do think they should fit the seats to the buyers and give some "Fitment" options that dont cost you $500 after you just dropped $25K plus. Ultimately its an awesome bike,

The bike I almost bought. They are nice, but I bought the Indian. More of what I wanted for same money. I'm editing to add to this comment, you touched on a lot of the points why I went Indian. Tpms, steel braided brake lines, led lights, heated touring seat, chrome lower forks(easier to clean than raw aluminum) storage in the lowers, adjustable windshield all stock. I did have to add the heel shifter.
@GearsGadgets

I'm a little confused about liquid cooled harleys...are just the heads cooled and other makers liquid cool other areas as well? Or is this liquid cooled as any other?
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
That is correct. Harley only liquid cools the heads and the cylinders are basically still air cooled. I mean it's still pretty much liquid cooled since they are hitting the hottest part of the motor.

I felt the same way about riding up high on the tank when I took a test rides on the 2019 Ultra & Street Glide Limited. Although the Street glide feels a little more spacious up front with the shark nose. Not sure if I could live with that cramped feeling on a touring bike. I guess that's the trade off for the armchair addition. I'll sick with my Heritage for now, but definitely have an eye on a bagger in the future. Maybe the the Challenger will force HD implement water cooling across their bagger lineup, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
A little bit but I don’t ride with highway pegs now so I don’t really know the true feeling of man spreading at 80mph. By far the most noticeable part was just feeling right up on the tank which makes the seating position very upright. I could see the claustrophobic feeling though which was surprising with such a big bike. Would need to monkey with it a bit to get it feeling right.

That vent, practically speaking, keeps rain from hitting you square in the face if you close it off. I own a 2019 Limited. I bought it in March. I live in TN. We get lots more rain than you do in AZ. By the way, I was born and raised in AZ. I ride my bike. Mine doesn’t sit in the garage much. If I know storms are coming or if they have already started, I don’t ride. But, if I’m riding and a storm comes up, I ride through it. That vent when it is opened allows the rain to pour through, straight into your face and makes a mess of the back of your windshield. I can deal with buying the heal shifter separately (still think it’s a cheap thing for Harley to do, taking it away), but there is no fix to not being able to close that vent. For that one reason... I am SO GLAD I BOUGHT my 2019 and wouldn’t consider trading to the 2020. By the way, I have 17K miles on mine since March.

Nice video. The front vent on the fairing sucks that you can't close it. When you're in bed whether You have to close it the rain comes all upon the windshield the same thing on the road glide. I've put the 2 bikes together the challenger and the Road glide, They are very comparable in price only difference is 2 or $300 between the 2 bikes in some cases the challenger was more money in some cases it was less. The challenger has its own set of problems that the public's not wear about yet.

The linked braking is the thing I like least about my RK. I wish I could undo it. It works fine just to slow down, but I like to use the rear brake to modulate speed/tighten up lines in corners. When the front brake activates it dives the fork and throws the chassis out of sorts. And this RDRS isn't now some freebie. You're paying an extra grand for this electronics that is complete overkill on a HD. HD's electronic version of a slipper clutch is effectively worthless. If you drop a gear at higher rpm without rev matching, the bike will still slow abruptly. I'm not even sure it's doing anything. The hill hold WOULD be nice if it worked with the bike in neutral. As it is, you trade holding the brake on a hill with holding the clutch. Holding the clutch takes a lot more effort. Choice of a touring bike is easy for me. The Road Glide is nice besides that gawd awful handlebar off a wheelbarrow. The ergonomics of the batwing Electra Glides feel like old timey cop bikes too me. The Road King with an Airhawk seat is the Goldilocks of the bunch. It feels just right.
@GearsGadgets

Interesting. I do know the Airhawk seat works. I banged out some miles on that seat cover to the Bring it Home parade and it was awesome.

Yeah I definitely feel more "character" in a Harley personally, I don't know what that feeling is but it is real for me. If you could capture that feeling with the weight distribution, suspension, and a little more perceived value in the odds and ends of an Indian, it would put Indian on notice. I think Indian has some great bikes but the Harley feeling is keeping things in Harleys favor for me today.

Black paint over chrome is cheaper to produce and they charge more for it, great marketing on their part. Harley has had chrome for years and the black is sharp but it is a fad imo and will pass as the black wheels on cars are starting to slow some. Chrome is classy on the touring bikes imo. "Blacked out option. That's what young people like and that's what I like" Wow, how the fuck can people like blacked out anything? Black shows dirt WAY easier than chrome and white. Polishing chrome intimidating? That explains why what used to be chrome is no longer as people don't want to take care of nice things. Saddening that chrome isn't an option on the Street Glide Special. Shame on you, Harley. At least let it be an option.

Has nothing to do with laziness in cleaning, has to do with trends. Chrome = Boomer. Younger buyers don’t want to buy something that looks likes it’s for old people. The Rolls Royce Black Badge edition doesn’t exist because modern millionaires don’t want to take care of their $330,000 Cullinan and polish chrome less. They want blacked out because it looks better to the aesthetic they are looking for. The market has spoken and the manufacturers are giving people what they want, unfortunately old people don’t tend to like new trends which historically been true of old people since the beginning of mankind.
