one of the things that is rarely brought up: as people get older especially in the computer-based society of today more and more folks have carpal tunnel syndrome and other medical conditions which make the constant use of a clutch painful or at least a bit difficult the DCT allows older riders to be more comfortable on bikes of any size and therefore allows them to enjoy two wheeled travel to a much older age people rarely talk about it but it certainly is something I have experienced myself it is worth mentioning here

@@motobob it really is a weird thing that my left wrist feels better muscling around of Gold Wing that has DCT than a bike weighing half as much what has a clutch lever which requires quite a bit of strength... and we have to remember that people her getting symptoms of these issues in the race at a younger and younger age because of the universal use of a computer mouse and the cell phone, etc. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to reply

I'm 45 (old?) I've tested NC700 with DCT - suxx, VRF1200 DCT - suxx... CRF1000 DCT.... I NEED DCT!... Now, as owner of ATAS 2018 DCT i just bought lever for manual changing gears if needed. I love my DCT on it. Lazy ride... auto... need fun... manual + lever (better then use buttons). I wanted DCT on AT. Still love my TDM on manual, still CAN drive manual. BUT DCT make my lazy riding just easier :) And cannot stall engine off-road :) (yes, i'm weak off-road rider :D)

Having had an early CRF1000 DCT for four years I traded to a base model manual at the start of this year, less than 1000 miles later I traded it to go back to DCT, so much more fun for me, great video 👍

I needed this comment. I just sold my 2019 DCT and put down a deposit for a AT AS ES DCT and the guy calls me back and says: sorry, is manual, want to keep the deposit down? I said yes, but hesitant. I don't think I can go back to MANUAL after riding 2 years DCT. thank you!

I’ve been riding the 2018 AT Adventure for a year with DCT and love it. The thing I’ve found is Tour / D mode is just that, a relaxed low rpm mode for highway touring. Any twisty road should have the bike in one of the 3 Sport modes. Shifting up and down is precise and quicker than I could do manually as it takes into account braking and throttle position. In hard driving corners you’d be hard pressed to shift as quickly especially on maximum braking into a corner. The DCT keeps the engine in the power band quite nicely. As a side note I’ve found in general all around driving the gas mileage is as good in sport mode as tour mode, 50 mpg, consistently. The low speed throttle control is excellent at walking speeds and in heavy stop and go traffic you’ll consider yourself a genius for picking the DCT version ;)

Did 2 testrides A Twin with DCT and was not convinced, in D it felt not right for me. Then after so many positive reviews I gave it another try (but read before how to operate it), with using drive modes and the S option it was now new experience. Bought a 2018 model with DCT and traded KTM 1190 Adventure in. Did not regret it one day. High comfort on tour, slow riding and turns. No stress in traffic and enough fun if it needs to go quick! Greetings from Germany to all UK 🇬🇧 riders 👍

I had DCT on the previous model ATAS and its amazing once you get used to it,when you said it was lazy out of the corners,i was like "press the downshift paddle before you enter a corner if youre wanting to power out of it!" I was pleased to hear your co host point that out later in the vid 👍. Its the same with overtakes,just override the automode by popping the downshift paddle before you pin the throttle,its an amazing system and i miss it on my Fireblade but when i go back to ADV bikes it'll be a DCT ATAS. Great channel 😎

My personal advice with this bike; DCT. I hesitated a lot, but I went for the DCT. Took me two weeks to get used to. But now I am, it’s such a great pleasure. As a matter of taste, I drive in S. The sporty feeling and perfect acceleration makes it a great driving experience. I own my brand new 1100CRF AS ES DCT for two months now, and it’s a beast. Don’t hesitate, unless you solely going to use this bike for of-road situations. In that case, I would go for the smaller version anyway.

I actually just traded in one of my fireblades for the Africa Twin Adventure sports DCT after test riding it. I didnt like the idea of an automatic clutch but I ended up falling in love with it and it would mean less work on long journeys and more time to admire the sights (or play with the carplay with the left hand). Its a super bike. Love it. The only negative I would say is that the normal D mode is a bit lumpy as the bike tends to want to run in 5 or 6 gear as much as possible. I think S /// mode is the best - its pretty usable all the time and still quite economical. you can however run the bike in manual and use gears with the buttons if you want more control over changes anyway - or if you want a quick shifter lever for your foot you can do that too.... i know you said all that in the video - good content as always mate, enjoy your channel as you seem to cover some bikes not many others do.

DCT is a total different world man. I love it! In the beginning it’s a bit weird but when you start to master the settings it’s unbelievably comfortable. Specially in heavy traffic and in the city where I live you have so many traffic lights.

The DCT works great for me... on the road I use a combination of touring mode in Sport drive I or II. For off-road u can use the off-road or gravel mode. Again, you can manually intervene with the 2 left finger peddles which I mainly use for downshifting and occasionally for upshifting going downhill when engine breaking holds you back too much. Btw - you can set the level of engine breaking too. For those who enjoy using the foot for switching gears, there is an optional food lever available for the DCT version as well. One key benefit of the DCT is, that you cannot stall the engine which is important for off-roading or in switchback turns... perfect for crossing the Alps :)

Good assessment. I have a DCT Crosstourer and it's an excellent system but you do have to put a little effort in to re-learn how to get the best from it. If you just jump on and give one a handful you will end up in a hedge. At very slow speeds you do need self restraint.

I tried both models 1000 and 1100 with DTC and I can say that for normal use with a little going on macadam and in the mud DTC office but for stronger and more frequent visits to forests mountains and more time spent off the road manual transmission is much better, in the end we return to maintenance, the difference in price when purchasing and the possibility of failure, I definitely recommend a manual transmission to those who drive harder ...

Good job eh! 🇨🇦 You are both right in so many ways! You ride this bike differently than a standard. Mindful of dragging rear brake, manual handlebar shifters when needed, and variety of user settings. You learn how to drive motorcycle in a somewhat new manner, but with some time, find it's much better than manual gearbox. For long miles and city miles huge advantage. Off road, you learn to operate vehicle more by manual handle bar shiftersand find it very enjoyable. I was able to adjust my rear brake pedal for great access when standing and sitting. Seat was very hard to begin with, but at around 4000 km, it or my butt broke in, lol. I live in BC Canada, with very diverse terrain. I find it is super comfortable and capable in all because of DCT. Not perfect, but very very enjoyable. Almost 10000km on a 2020 ATASes. I just wish you had the electric suspension version. You'd be literally amazed at difference between road, urban, gravel, and off-road settings feel!!! This truly is what separates the regular AT from the ATAS, for global adventuring. You can pack extra gear, pillion, remove some or all, and with quick TFT or menu selection on the fly, adjust your incredibly noticeable ride in seconds. This is the game changer for me, as I always have a great suspension under me. Not sacked out due to weight or a harsh setup being light. Sweet ola :-) Try riding in gravel mode on a twisty tarmac road spiritedly. You instantly realize the difference. Thanks for sharing great content fellas, take care eh :-) 🇨🇦

Another option is to fit the optional foot shifter to the DCT then manual mode gives a more traditional feel, drive it like any other quick shifter but also lets you select drive and neutral with your foot. Don’t be so hard on the D mode, I agree the Sport mode is more exciting but the D mode is nice when you want as relaxing ride.

DCT for me. I've got a CRF1100L ATAS ES DCT '20 and for cruising the S1 works perfect, once in a while interfering manually, but when going Bansaï put it in (M)anual and you won't feel a notch or clunk up- and downshifting! (I used to have a R1250RS, but that had a horrible quickshifter, clunky all the way) and you get a very nice F1 sound on downshifting (well, almost then ;-)

Having done over 80% of my miles on a DCT bike (NC 750 - the rest on a Zero) I have just bought my first manual bike (Tiger 850). All the embarrassing incidents of stalling notwithstanding, I felt that the Triumph shift assist would be somewhat a replacement for the DCT. I‘m still running the bike in, so I haven‘t used it much yet, but I‘ll be curious to see if it is comparable, especially when it comes to clutch cramps (I‘m an old bugger, not getting any younger). So far, no regrets, but it‘s true, I do miss the convenience of DCT.

The DCT is more a safety item for me and if available I would have bought it when I was 30. 30 years later I have the 20 AT AS ES DCT. Yes it’s chill to kick back and let the bike do the work. But aside from the electro bells and whistles the DCT helps as a poor mans hill hold and during emergency braking it will always be in the right gear and not stall when you need a bite to get you out of trouble. The lights on this bike are the best I’ve ever seen and if you haven’t experienced lean angle lights your in for a real treat. Outstanding gorgeous motorcycle that handles like a dreamboat with more than ample get up n go.

I bought the DCT after 2 days with Dave Thorpe at the Honda Adventure Centre. I'd assumed it would be great on the road not so good off road. I was wrong :-) Get it in the right mode (never D, the only time I ever select D is by mistake) and you can focus all your attention on where you are going and getting your balance, knowing that the DCT will sort out the gears for you. I'm no off road expert and I'm sure for some 5% edge cases having a clutch is helpful. For me, even for those dreaded low speed, tight stand up turns it was easier to use the rear brake and focus on where I was going without trying to feather a clutch.

Just run in my Africa Twin 1100 DCT, the standard version. I’ve got a left ankle injury and this makes the world of difference, but then my other bike is a Ducati916 and everything about that is painful. Even without the injury, I’d go DCT. The beauty of it is you can’t stall it, even off road! Only criticisms of the bike are: The seat is hard after 100 miles and I’ve got both standard and low seats! The seat is not easy to unlock and remove. There’s no cubby hole for your phone, yet you need to plug it in to get Apple Car Play and Google maps. Prefer the lovely tubeless wheels of the Adventure Sport version. Otherwise it’s a fantastic bike. Does 55mpg with ease, which is pretty damn good. It’s made in Japan, not some grotty little sweatshop. Feels like a big trailie, rather than an adventure bike, but with Honda build quality.

I got a VRF1200X Crosstourer DCT, great for two up riding with some token gravel roads thrown in. The biggest complaint would be the DCT adds 20lbs. Having ridden manuals for 20 years it takes some practice (relearning) when it comes to the dirt. If Honda would make an 800cc Africa Twin at 400-425lbs, that would be my next purchase. I could go manual or DCT, but off road weight matters a lot.

For very low speed driving/ technical riding/parking lot maneuvers I would prefer a clutch. You cant rev the engine and feather in the clutch with a DCT. I learned long ago that putting some revs on the engine and getting that flywheel mass spinning creates a gyroscopic force that helps stabilize the bike. This is something that is not possible with a DCT. I'm a left leg amputee and have a Bergmann 650 and the clutch has the above mentioned properties. Now its got a low center of gravity so the inability to use a clutch does not hamper it at all. My Honda VTX1800 I drive with slamming the heel and toe shifter but I can use the clutch to my advantage in low speed maneuvers. Adventure bikes are tall and without the ability to work the clutch it could be an intimidating ride. I would probably install an electric pushbutton up and down shifter and work the clutch as I always had. He is correct, the Goldwing or NX750 might be fine with the DCT. My 2 cents.

I would probably get the optional foot operated shifter,

I’ve noticed in a few reviews that riders don’t fully explain the bikes flexibility. Use of the gear change buttons to override was a good catch but also ... there are three differently configured Sports modes not just one, and the Gravel button really sharpens up the response and gear changes when that’s what you need. There are two tuneable rider modes in addition to four pre set options. So yes it takes time to work out what’s right for you ... then you are all set!

Good news! • Did you know that there is someone who died for you on a cross so that you could achieve eternal life? • Did you know that you only have two paths after death? The Bible tells us in the book of Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." and in Ecclesiastes 7:20 it says "Certainly there is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins." This tells us that all human beings are sinners (we all break God's law), therefore, we deserve God's punishment for going against his word, but the good news is that through his son Jesus Christ we can obtain forgiveness of sins: John 3:16 [16] For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life. Romans 5: 8 [8] But God shows his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God died on a cross for all humanity more than 2000 years ago, rising on the third day and paying a high price for our sins, since in the Bible it tells us that there is a heaven after death but also There is a hell and the kingdom of heaven can only be reached through Jesus Christ through the forgiveness of sins, it is not through any virgin or any saint, or by any other means, there is only one mediator between God and men, so if you want to go to heaven you have to repent of your sins (fornication, lies, etc.) and follow Jesus (obey biblical commandments). Christ is coming soon! Judgments come to earth (asteroids, earthquakes, etc.), seek God who has great things for your life. God bless you. Prayer: Prayer: dear Lord Jesus forgive my sins, I know that I am a sinner and I need your forgiveness, enter my heart and guide me towards eternal life, thank you. Amen

How slow do you need to go? DCT in gear can coast to a stop if you give it zero throttle input and not stalling. You can say in gear and no brakes on and not move until applying throttle.

I moved to automatic cars years ago which are so much better in traffic and give the best of both worlds in terms of manual override but relaxed driving when you want it. I rode an X-ADV and found it easy but fun. I don’t, but contrast, like the variable drives found on most scooters. I have had and still have several bikes and if there is one aspect that irks as I get older is gear changing in heavy traffic. I’m an older (61) rider but have decades of experience that leads me to the DCT option (and only Honda so far). It’s not age but, as your great review says, what are you using the bike for. The same can be said of sports bikes which are, for me, nice to look at but utterly useless. Most anti views are based on an unwillingness to consider much as “real” bikers view scooters.

2016 CRF1000 DCT Owner and my “ONLY” complaint of DCT is when your on Technical Off-road Single Trails, if you get into a situation like a deep rut and you accidentally grip the throttle and “Whiskey Throttle It” and with NO Clutch to kill the power your apt to get thrown off the bike. Besides this set back I’d probably get another DCT model.

I have a manual version. I think DCT would be better if riding just roads, gravel, sand, tarmac or whatever. But if you ride technical sections off road, where the speed is below 20kmh, I believe I would not survive without a clutch lever :). The first gear is so high you must slip and blib the clucth a lot.

I'm considering an ATASes. I have not ridden a DCT bike. I know you can use the paddle buttons to choose other gears manually, but... will the DCT "fight" me over what gear to be in? Can I ride the bike completely in a manual mode manner, using the buttons? Thanks for a reply.

After three GSs in a row and issues with arthritis in neck I am seriously considering one of these as my next bike, my preference would be for DCT. Everybody who rides one seems to really rate them, plus I think the black one looks cool😀

I think I'd go for the black too. When I was riding this one through London a copper asked me "are you in the force?" - I was wearing a black jacket and white lid to be fair.

Is the DCT reliable? Everybody who has them seems to love them, I always assumed the old tried and true manual was the most reliable, is it the same story with the DCT?

I loved the DCT NC750X I had, amazing to ride. However the gearbox started playing up and my local main dealer bodged the service too. They did eventually fix it by replacing the shift motor but they had the bike for months. As much as I loved the DCT gearbox I won’t be buying another, I appreciate problems happen but I have zero confidence in the dealer either. Shame ☹️
@stevebolton8471
@stevebolton8471 3 года назад
That's a real shame. I had heard that the shift pin used to break around 60K miles on the NC700 but not seen many reports of DCT failure for recent NC's on the UK NC fora. All good for mine at nearly 19K miles.

DCT but on an 850 baby Africa Twin in 2021? You're right it takes about 2,000 miles to figure out how to adjust your riding style to DCT. Once you do, its DCT all the way.

@ShaneZettelmier
@ShaneZettelmier Год назад
Never ridden one but it seems interesting. I can see were putting down a lot of miles on highways it would be nice but I’m not sure. And a low speed very tight turn you depend on that clutch a lot you keep your throttle steady and you use your clutch to control your speed and keep your bike upright, so I’m not sure I would be so great in a city with a lot of traffic or if you need to do a lot of tight slow turns. I would like to see someone try it on an obstacle course but I’m guessing it’s just not gonna be good at it. I don’t know I’d have to ride one but I just can’t see not having a clutch. The advantage I could see on this would be on hills. Are used to live on a mountain and we had a lot of stop signs and signals where you were pointing up pretty steep hills and that was really hard on the clutch come on this you just use your foot break and go and not have to worry about rolling back or killing the engine so that part might be awesome, but I just don’t know, I just worry that it would be too difficult to deal with on slow technical stuff and trying to turn really sharp in parking lots we’re on a thin street or driveway without a clutch. 🤔

I have an ATAS 2018 DCT and love it. The DCT is the best feature. You have to learn how it works to get the best of it. If you don't like it, fine, but try before making your choice. I do any type of riding and don't miss the clutch lever at all. There is a riding mode to suit every daily mood.

Ive not yet ridden a DCT version but I Have watched just about ever review on RU-vid and look forward to riding it.............. What I have noticed is MOST reviewers suggest using the Sport setting ie (sport 2)..... THIS makes me question why HONDA even provided the other setting ?????? I sort of feel like HONDA is using their BUYING public as their TEST Gini pig to see what setting the public prefers..... It seems to me that D always Lugs the motor for most riders Making D rather point less to use or Have on the bike....... I envision my self riding in Sport 2 ALL THE TIME and Down shifting when entering a corner then allow DCT to shift up out of the corners... This is the way I think I would use the DCT box...... I simply see no need for other setting on the bike... HONDA should simply make D a Sport 2 setting and be done with it .... Do YOU see a need for the other settings ???? Like I said Ive never ridden one.....

Simple: If you have more than one bike... make sure both are DCT or both are manual. I've seen Goldwing DCT owners "blip" their bikes uncontrollably forward while stopped at intersections... Get your muscle memory on a single style and stick to it.

Is the blinky lights that I'm seeing something that is only on the euro spec AT bikes? Even if I bought a new bike modulating headlights is something I would really want to catch the eyes of the lain brained car drivers. I dont know if they can modulate LEDs or Xenon lights.

Manual with quick shifter
@JohanVisscher61
@JohanVisscher61 3 месяца назад
A quickshifter is not an alternative for a DCT. The new E-clutch might be. After 3 years of riding an Africa Twin DCT, I must say that I never use the D mode and I hardly use the manual mode. I ride in S1 or S2 and sometimes manually down shift with my left thumb. Specially in down hill driving I down shift multiple times to get the right amount of engine breaking.
