Nice tight arrangement of this standard. It reminds me of the Dave Pell bands of the 70's. The unison towards the end with the scatting is unique. These youngsters just get better and better.

Fab octet performance! Agree that there could’ve been a bit more of Marçal playing , but WOW what an arranger!! Love Andrea’s seamless switch from instrument to vocalese, and, no (about another comment), she’s not late with lyrics! Just GREAT use of RUBATO!

Lovely arrangement by Marcal, who in addition to being a fine saxophonist is also a talented arranger ! Andrea as usual is immaculate, great harmony from all the musicians and this number really swings.

Love the Tenor player! ....trumpet is as tasteful while far prettier!, the leader holds it down beautifully and piano, vocal and 2nd trumpet and bari add in ALL the right ways to the voicing and texture. The drummer has a great touch and precision too!, where do you get these talented young people?!

Note oddly how andrea stretches out the words out. No American singer does this, but it is a testament to her amazing creativity. Bravo!

While Andrea's singing is very unique, it is not an exclusive style. That stretching out of the notes is called rubato, extending or shortening notes/stealing time yet still being on beat. Plenty of American singers incorporate this into their music.

Another chance to hear Andrea Motis's voice and trumpet. It is always a joy to hear her perform. Has she dropped the sax? I remember hearing her play, I believe, alto and soprano sax in early videos. Bravo Joan.

Andrea's first several vocal Scat notes Sparkle, getting her scat off to a great start. For this song and for this group's playing her scat was beautifully appropriate... Frank Loesser was one of America's best pop composers.He composed this song in New York in the thirties, I'm guessing. Jazz musicians have played it endlessly.

Andrea seems to run little late on the lyrics but we excuse her having to sing in a non native language. There is that underlying talent and beauty that increases with time.

I think it's intentional, Andrea often sings ahead or behind the music and interchanges but never loses it. She does it on several numbers in "Live at Jamboree" one of the first DVDs she recorded at the age of 17.

It’s called R U B A T O ! Long tradition of it in many genres, instrumental solos, bass playing as well as vocals in folk songs. ‘Stretching’ effect. Both anticipating and retarding.

I would have liked to have seen more Marçal and less Andrea, but that's not a knock on Andrea, who I think is wonderful. I just thought since this is from a "Joan presents Marçal" CD, the focus should be on Marçal himself. But then I see that the arrangement is by Marçal, so I guess he wanted it this way. In any case, it's very nice!
