After I came out with the long-term review of the 2020 MacBook Air base model with the M1 chip, many people commented asking if the base model will be enough for their needs.
8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD are the bare minimum by today's standards but, in my opinion, I think most people will be just fine with the base model MBA.
I am able to edit 4K videos, work in Photoshop, and have 5-10 other programs open without and issues on this base model. Along with an iCloud storage plan or an external hard drive, you should be just fine with the base model MacBook Air.

@@jackn2364 When reselling a mac, you really need to re-format the hard drive and reset the machine to the way it was when you first bought it. When formatting, the OS gives you a security level option where you can choose to write over the hard drive with 1/0's so it's impossible for someone else to obtain info from it in the future.

Dad!!! I viewed countless M1 Air videos and none of them gave the realistic day-to-day impression of the usage and aesthetics of the device as well as you!!!! Just the perfect video, talking about the product, while showing the product itself!! Thank god man, I am so tired of all the "influencer" type reviewers that wants to keep the camera on their face all the time instead of actually letting us see the product itself.

@@EvolutionRider909 I previously used a MacBook and a MacBook Air with an external monitor and an Apple keyboard and cheap mouse. The MacBook Air worked great but ran out of storage space. The iMac with the Retina display is the only Mac that I regret purchasing because of it's super slow speed and is what the M1 MacBook Air is replacing. It seems it will pretty hard to find anything close to the Retina display at a budget price. There is an Acer ConceptD FHD 24" 2K monitor at Costco that I'm considering, but I'll wait to see if it goes on sale. Thanks for the reply and have a good day!

Thank you I just ordered one and have a 1TB external hard drive and I’m a hubby photographer and look forward to using this. My 2014 4GB just can’t handle newer programs now if not for photo processing it’s still a good laptop.

Another thing to consider is that the 512GB model cost $200-300 more than the 256GB model. But for $200 you can buy the Kingston XS2000 2TB external SSD which supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Yeah, the Macbook Air M1 doesn't support that, but future high end Macs probably will (in like 3-5 years), so the drive might come in handy some day. And you get an additional 2TB (externally) instead of 256GB (internally).

@@CherriBerri101 yes it's working fine without lag I open 60+ tabs in chrome+ excel, word, ppt, RU-vid in safari, any 3 more my office software at one time. As of now I didn't face any lag in it. If you have similar usage you can consider it for storage I will suggest to buy external SSD if required for me it's not required.

Wonderful review! I agree, the base model is good for most people performance wise. The only thing holding me back is the 256 GB SSD.... but, you're right that you could also get cloud or external storage.

For normal purposes such as School work and basic video editing, the Mac Air base will be more than enough. In terms of storage, I would recommend to use either multiple cloud storage or an external SSD if 256GB is not enough for you. Just my recommendation

Base model is the best, great resale value, and great power. At work only 3 people have pros. Everyone else has Air. So is more than enough power. Granted I do web-based software. But is just so powerful anyways for the based model. My only thing is maybe maybe the 16gb would be great. But right now I’m on 8gb Ram. So no worries yet. One more thing is that battery life is amazing...!

From what I’ve heard, the base model is MORE then enough for what most people would use a MacBook Air for, Unless you’d want more storage, RAM or want that 8-core GPU instead of the 7-core GPU, there’s no other reason to upgrade from base model.

I just ordered a MBA m1 16G 2TB that will replace my 16 inch MBP. I plan to use it for 4 years. It's still worth it for me to go this route because of the battery life and the weight as I will be starting to travel again.

I was planing on getting m1 16gb /256 gb, customize from Apple Store at about 1150 usd post tax. Then there was a flash deal for a base model here at about 800 usd post tax. So for me, upgrading the ram to 16gb costs me about 350 usd! I just got myself a base model 😂. For 350 usd , I can use that for my next or another computer if I would need one. Even reselling it in 2 years, I don’t think I lost much of the value. However, if the upgrade is at 200 usd. I would upgrade the ram to 16 for some headroom and performance in some app.

I'm not. MacOS will always use as much swap as it can and the SSD is built for this amount of usage (or it should be).

use safari to limit swap usage. anyway it will take minimum 10 years with high swap usage to start showing signs of defect.

I did use docker for 4 container Play with Xcode Play with Flutter (Ios and Andro Simulator) Python Javascript Edit video with Davinci Resolve Making Some music (InvestorMusik) Gaming & Record (FunGuardian) ACVM (Virtualization for Windows Developing Purpose with Python) I believe everything is fine, and in my use, i never do it parallel, yeah maybe 16 GB better for parallel purpose

Is the MacBook Air and Mac Mini powerful enough for trading options and futures? They only come with eight gigabytes of RAM should you get 16 gigs?

Web / Mobile app dev here. The base model is not enough if you intend to use an Android simulator. Otherwise, I love it. Secondly, it's unified memory. This means it's used by both CPU and GPU. If you can definitely go for the 16GB model.

Really great video thank you so much for your so honest opinion of the MacBook Air, quick question- I plan on getting one of these exact base models very soon strictly for running Logic Pro on it and practically nothing else. Most of my projects will never go beyond 20 tracks so do you think the base model would be enough for this ? Sorry for the long winded way I put it 🙃

So i plan to go to collage study multimedia and stuff i have gaming computer at home I think this will be more than enough for me cause in my country difference between base model and upgraded 16 gb ram 512 gb ssd is like more than $500

@@KundanYadav-je4xf What I mean is a lot of people upgraded their MacBooks in the previous generation but would now need to purchase a new MacBook again if they want the M1 which is a much better upgrade. Instead, purchase the base model MacBook, use it for two to three years and if you have the money, upgrade to the latest model then. You'll save money by not upgrading to the higher end levels as there's always going to be a new MacBook Air every two or three years by the looks of it.

Thanks for the video! Could you help me? I don't do so much multitasking with different programs but i do some editing, i have projects where i need to put 5-7 videos (usually in 1080p) in the screen to edit (like a music video with several instruments). (This is the most demanding my computer has done) Do you recommend this Macbook for that? Or should i go for the 16GB model? *I'm now using a Lenovo Thinkpad with Core i5 and 4GB of RAM and i'm considering switch to a Mac

at 1080p, this should handle it no problem. It will be lightyears faster than you Thinkpad with 4gb

Quite frankly you're the most honest reviewer here on RU-vid . Basically word for word you describe how this machine is intended to be used for the majority of people . my machine had its small bug and issues here and there. But once I updated the complete IOS from Big Sur to Monterey all of my issues went away and the battery live got upgraded too, I got pretty lucky I would say so.
