Ive had a mazda 3 and currently have a mazda 2. Yeah I hate the RUST ISSUE, the very thin paint and will never get another Mazda. Very nice handling though.
@@anonymous00117 I could care less about all of that. I only watch her channel because she does a good job imo. All the power to her if people only watch because they think she’s attractive and sexy.
That 6 speed torque converter aisin/toyota auto is the best thing about this thing, it just responds and delivers power. Hyundai/kia don't tell you that the dual clutch transmissions do NOT live up to off road adventures, at all- they get away with it because 98% of owners don't leave the road any ways. As far as suspension, I find it to be perfect. The stiffness is what allows this car to go to 80k miles before it feels like the suspension is getting weak and due for some damper replacements. The stiffer suspension surprised me when loading up a 230lb motorcycle with a steel bike carrier in the rear hitch, the cx-3 handled it like it wasn't even there, even on railroad crossings, the suspension just took it and it handed the winding high speed canyon with that load with no issues at all, totally impressive.
Unfortunately he's correct, the suspension is pretty tight and great for the highway and around town, not so much on rough roads at all. Although it is very capable off-road. I was able to do the Pot Ash Road with one.
I’m impressed by the cx5’s abilities. I am excited for the cx-50, great styling and some soft roading abilities. I live in LA, and have no interest in “real” off roading. After a recent road trip to Monument Valley, the idea of doing some scenic soft roading (such as the Valley of the Gods) looked like fun, but I would still want a compact, decent handling suv for urban dwelling and tight parking spaces.
This was a fun video to watch. I have a 2020 Signature CX-5 and it will probably never go off pavement. No vehicle is perfect but in my 54 years of buying new vehicles, 17 to be exact, this is my all time favorite . I only use 87 octane after trying a couple tanks of premium. I felt no difference. 310 pounds feet versus 320 is not something I could feel but this amazing amount of torque in a small vehicle is what makes this car an absolute joy to drive. The Edwards video tests show the turbo CX-5 is 2 seconds faster to 60 than a new Rav 4 and 1 second faster than a new CRV. Both Toyota and Honda make fantastic vehicles and I have owned both. I had a 2015 Mazda 3 GT for 5 years. It was flawless and fun to drive and held its value very well. My new CX-5 is even more fun, just hope it will be as reliable. Thanks for a great video.
i have the same car and i'm with you, this is my favorite vehicle i've owned and that includes BMW's, Audis and VWs. Very fun car to drive and punches way above its weight. Although like you I can't see myself ever taking it off road.
I'm in a serious bind between the rav or a cx5.. it's such a tough toss up. Obviously the Mazda has more luxury on even it's base model but the Toyota I feel slightly more confident about as far as longevity. As far as finances.. Toyota are pretty stiff and have a higher interest%. Mazda seems more likely to give incentives and rebates plus a lower %. Tough call. I seriously cannot decide.
@@T-roccBABY Toyota makes fine vehicles that last but so does Mazda. My son has had his 201O Mazda 3 for 11 years, he plans on keeping it for years to come. It has been flawless, I have done all the oil changes since new and he just spent his first money on maintenance, the car has a 160000 km or 100000 miles, he got his first tuneup, brake job and coolant change. I had my 2015 Mazda 3 for 6 years, it was Flawless. My CX5 is 8 months old, only 8000 miles but has been perfect and just a blast to drive and I love blowing the doors off new Rav4s, ha ha . As far as financing , in Canada Mazda uses Scotiabank and I made my best deal and then got 0 % interest. I have sold cars and know that in most cases 0 % is not really a no cost item but even back in 2010 and 2015 , both my son and I got 0 % interest after negotiating our best deal which is getting up and walking out, if a dealer lets you walk, you have made your best deal, trust me , I was a car salesman and that is the only way you know you got your best price. Remember the sales guy gets 30 % of the dealer’s profit, the conversations with the sales manager are not about giving the customer the lowest price.
@@healthballnut thanks for the response! Indeed I love being able to walk away. I'm considering waiting until December for even better pricing; whether they'll have a legitimate sale going on or just my own knowledge that they'll want to move 2021 stock, I'd imagine I could get the GT trim for the same price I'm looking at for the GS right now. The one thing I'm not crazy about is how barebones they've kept it. So, the rav already has a built in block heater and I love the little port on the bumper for plugging it in, way cleaner than having a cord hanging through your hood. The xle trim I'm looking at that's neck n neck with the gs trim does have fully power seats, which had a great lumbar support, whereas the cx was manual. I'm going to test it again in a few hours now to see how the manual lumbar holds up, but like I'm saying, if I wait until December that may not even be an issue. The GT trim also has stuff like fog lights and adaptive front lighting which I always thought was neat. I'd like to be able to talk them down on a gt trim but I think given the timing of the year it's not likely they'd match it to the gs trim haha. I'd also like to see them throw in a winter package or at least spare tires on rims.. I heard the stock tires on these are quite useless in snow. But I am definitely overall leaning more towards the Mazda. I like that they have ditched the Ford motors and have their own transmission now. More confident in craftsmanship in my opinion. I probably wouldn't spring for it but do you know if the turbo version of the cx5 would hold up? I've heard factory stock turbos are better for longevity than an aftermarket but I do still think that I'd have better engine life without a turbo all together.
@@sm3ool9383 My CX-5 is basically the exact same model as the one shown here. Took it for a drive out to a nearby lake - the winding highway part of the drive was fantastic and it had no problems handling the last stretch down a dirt gravel road with quite a few potholes. It wasn't off-roading to the extent you see here but outside of a firm ride (which basically you compromise on for looks with those 19inch wheels), I had zero issues. IMHO I would say the CX-5 Signature is (still) a class-leading 8/10 on paved roads and a good-enough or capable enough 6.5/10 for light off-roading situations.
@@Alboravin Thanks mate! I have already bought one 10 days ago. The car is beautiful from the exterior & interior and it's so exciting to drive! I really love it.
"Trail mode" isn't a new feature for the CX-5!! They just added an individual button to activate it. Off-road or "trail mode" can be activated in older CX-5s (like the 2019 you complained about last year) by disabling traction control. Mazda even details this hidden feature on their website, just search "WHAT’S THE DIFF? MAZDA CX-5 UNLOCKS ‘SECRET’ OFF-ROAD MODE". Your review of the 2019 CX-5 was very frustrating because it had this feature and same capability but somehow you think the 2020 is completely different when it's exactly the same, except they added a button.
Mazda basically overestimated their target market by not including a dedicated button, so in the update they added it. People are too lazy to read manuals or even visit Mazda website nowadays.
Hack for the piano black you can get a strip of packing tape and place it over and cut it out and it works really well. Just peel clean and replace and it keeps it looking good underneath
i just installed falken AT 245/55/19 on my 2023 carbon edition. They look awesome and performs extremely well on light offloading. this car definitely can haldle rougher trails
In my CX5 2017 owner manual, they said, the model is not recommended for offroad. The AWD system is mainly designed for safety. No scratches on mine on the piano black, guess someone carefully used it. Also has CarPlay. Real pleasure to drive. Love it!
Always fun to see you drive our local roads. I’m surprised I haven’t seen you out & about yet - those interior mounted cameras would definitely catch my eye.
Most people buying this car don't need a lot of room. I've seen a lot of reviews comparing it to the CRV. Yes it's smaller but it doesn't matter (in fact it's probably a good thing.
For some people it matters for others it doesn't. For me it is a downside but I'll still chose CX-5 as it comes with standard automatic transmission and a diesel on my market. CR-V offers CVT, terrible AWD and a failing small turbo engine. No amount of trunk space will counterbalance these flawes :)
CX5 was too small for my needs (do a lot of camping). Text drive was also underwhelming, stiff ride especially over pavement and seats much too firm. Opted for RAV4 hybrid XSE with upgraded 235/55R19 wheels, handles nicely yet smooth
I personally like the RAV4, and the hybrid is the best choice (short of the plug in hybrid). I have heard that the engine can be loud on agressive acceleration; is that true? PS I drive a Camry XSE; the XS trim is much more attractive than the LE line.
@@10tenman10 Test drive the RAV4 XSE hybrid to see noise for yourself. In town extremely quiet being in hybrid 1/2 the time. Highway noise pretty good (slightly above average), engine is somewhat loud when you stomp on it but not nearly as loud as gas models as they don't come wifh hood blanket or electric assist (although my dealer said 2020 they added more noise insulation at engines firewall)
More interior room, smoother suspension over potholes and rough roads, comfier seats, better fuel economy, less feminine exterior, bigger infotainment with touch screen.
@@James-il3tq After 6 months of rough roads in Houston, TX, I’ve marveled at how smooth it is over tough roads given it’s got minimal roll in corners and is tall/heavy. The interior space is great for what I need but if I needed more space there are plenty of other cars to look at. I have 3 gripes. The screen brightness is almost never right for me and adjusting it is a lot of clicks. The power band hits a cliff earlier than you expect. The 6 speed is ok but a dsg would set it off.
Working in a Mazda dealership now, I'm a bit disappointed of the safety tech. As you tested here the lane keep assist is not good, same rear traffic alert. I think for a brand that wants to be positioned as premium now, I think they have to improve a lot some things yet.
They should have more premium packages/options. It is easy to raise the price but it doesn't necessarily make sense to offer features some people do not care about. Saying that, I do think offering more options is a reasonable idea if Mazda is serious about entering premium market. I'll likely go for 2017 CX-5 AWD diesele soon. It is available in my market and it comes in competitive price, especially considering what it offers in return.
@@valdius85 yes, we get here in NZ Diesel. Don't take me wrong, I think Mazda it's a great product, but if you really care about some tech, and how it works, I think Mazda it's a bit behind. But if you are into driving experience, fun, design, and the quality you perceive, Mazda it's brand you should check.
@@subazealand9158 diesel and conventional automatic transmission is what brings me to Mazda. Sat Nav can be upgraded so no problem. Will see though as I like Forester as well and it fits my needs well. I could use a square trunk right now
Hey!! It's "Ryan Tuesday!!!!" Great video/review. Have always loved the looks on the CX5 but the pricing(Although, yes this is the Signature edition), and awd systems leave a bit to be desired. Either way, thank you Ryan, for yet another great video. 👍
Very good demonstration of the AWD system improvement. Could you inquire of Mazda if the 2020 software changes be uploaded on older models? I would definitely pursue this should I be the owner a last generation CX-5.
I was thinking the same way. I'd love to add this software to the 2017 model that I will likely buy soon. I do not want to spend money on the new one but could really use the trail functionality for snowy conditions.
No need to update, they didn't actually change the AWD system. Mazda just added a new button to turn on off-road mode. Good news, you can turn on off-road mode in 2017-2019 CX-5 s by pressing the traction control button. It does the same thing (google WHAT’S THE DIFF? MAZDA CX-5 UNLOCKS ‘SECRET’ OFF-ROAD MODE and read Mazda's article about it for more info).
Short answer: NO. Long answer: Trail mode uses the fact that it has open differentials, you may know that in an open differential power goes to whichever wheel offers the least resistance to spinning, so having for example a wheel in the air will cause it to spin and spin, this system basically uses the ABS to brake individual wheels which then transfers the motion to the opposite wheel (the one with traction).
This will be my next ride. I have a 2015 M3 and I love it. But I want something bigger. I wish they would improve the MPGs on this one tho. I’m used to my M3’s awesome MPGs
you guys do realise that the trail mode is on all Awd Cx_5's ??? even the older ones, just turn off traction control and it turns into trail mode. they just added the button in the 2020 models because people where too stupid to realise that pff
This is true, Mazda released an update on their website that applies to previous CX-5 models stating that an off-road mode can be activated by pressing the traction control button. There are also plenty of RU-vid videos featuring their engineers talking about this.
Test driving this auto....found it very tight for me. My knees hit the steering column... Wish it was bigger. And I am not a large or tall guy. Will be happy with they come out with the inline 6 motor.
If you need USB with 3 people in the rear seat for that long for that often, just use a splitter from the power outlet in back of the center console. Also, the rear seats have a 'recline' feature. It's only like 5 deg, but it's something. I don't believe the steering wheel is leather on the 2020 Sig. I have one and it does not feel like actual leather,
Great review, but I don't see the CX-5 as an off road car. I do see it as a ski car, and that trail mode should do wonders in snow and ice. Also gravel roads.
All it takes is one boulder punching a hole through the oil pan. I wouldn’t take any vehicle up this trail unless my vehicle has skid plates protecting all critical components of the drivetrain.
The awd is pretty good. Most people don't take their crossover off rode. If need real off road buy Toyota 4 runner. People buy Mazda for the driving experience. No other SUV can match the Mazda on driving dynamics. The 2020 ford escape is also good
As always a very good review. Hopefully in a near future I can purchase this new CX-5. I love my Rav4 but this new Mazda looks so nice! The only thing that I am a little worried is the Reliability of this vehicle
The 2020 Mazda cx5 got number 1 spot in reliability. Also number 1 in safety in its class. It was a no brainer for me. I love this car! I always look forward to driving it.
those are specific trims made for offroading the cx-5 does not claim to be a offroad car just a suv with AWD. The offroad trims of these models have higher ground clearence etc for more useability offroading along with specific suspensions designed for it. The mazda doesnt have that nor does it claim to have it can you mildly off road with a mazda sure are you gonna take it to the canyon and carve up rocks hell no so when it comes to offroading those cars will be better but even those arent true off roading cars themselves just slightly raised imrpoved suspension cars the mazdas AWD system is all around the best its active sensing vs the others manually adjusted for mud snow etc it reacts faster than a human can to changes asap etc
mazda touch screen speed sensitivity can be turned off just youtube it folks it takes maybe 2 mins of your time and 6 button presses and you can use the touchscreen moving 60mph or stopped. Oem only allows the screen to work up to 5mph. mazda seats are always super firm its the foam they use it takes like 3 months of daily use to get them to break in and feel great.
Based on this review, I would get a subaru Forester sport. Cheaper, bigger, best AWD, lane centering, and better visibility. Yes the engine is weaker but it is more than enough for highway.
@@norme1850 Consumers reports is the WORST place to look at reviews. Paid service by auto manufacturers and if you watch their reviewers are total flakes without a clue. YT reviewers like Alex on Autos and Redline give much better review and it's impartial 😊
Makes me a bit more confident in my 2021 going up in the mountains to where I want to go camping. My 06 Ranger has no problems with it but it's hard to pack all of us, our gear and the dog in that little truck.
I am utterly SHOCKED at how well this handled this terrain. All with the push of a button. Why in hell couldn't Honda incorporate the same technology into the CRV. It's a far roomier and more SUV looking vehicle than the CX-5 which is basically a crossover.
Yeah, totally dismissive in the 2019 review because he didn't realize that car also had the off-road mode, he just didn't know how to activate it. Does he even do research on the cars he tests before he makes the videos?
Love all your videos and went with a Subaru. Getting my wife a new car and she loves the cx-5 would you think the turbo is the way to go for mostly around town driving or can we stick with the regular engine? Gas prices are high enough and I think the turbo requires premium fuel.
Great video. No hill decent deal breaker. If you drive on snowy hills you can't live without this...as it will save your life on snowy and icey hills...
Please say how tall you are when talking about room in the back seat because room varies with taller people. Thanks so much. I subscribe to your vids and find them great as you cover many details. 😀
don't reverse relying on the reverse camera alone. always look, use your mirrors and be aware of the surroundings. this advice is mostly for americans.
The RAV4 is just a smaller, weaker and less capable version of the 4runner, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It caters to small families that want something with a more aggressive look and feel than the boring CRV. But at the end of the day, it's numb steering and suspension will leave you glad that you have a prettier infotainment system because that's all about all the excitement you'll get from it. The CX-5 clearly isn't as practical as the competition as it's strong points are driving dynamics and style. It falls short on cargo space and smooth cruising as it's designed to give the real auto enthusiasts a step up in the driving experience. In order to do that, sacrifices have to be made. You can't glide over every bump in the road then zip through the corners without body roll, at least not at this price point. There's no winners or losers here, just different strokes for different folks.
I feel doubtful that mazda is reading here, but the NEED to to push the "trail mode" button in order for the ABS system to apply the brakes to the spinning wheels seems incredibly unnecessary. This is far more mild than the 7 different drive modes most off road vehicles have these day but the button pushing shouldn't be one-bit necessary.
I can agree with the preexisting snow challenge. I drive my CX-5 from ‘15 on dirt roads plenty. Getting new ‘21 Grand Touring Reserve 2.5t. Rubicon handles my heavy duty driving. Life is good. So is the car. Out.
The Mazda CX-5 suspension is not tunned for offroad, it's quite delicate and stiff. If you want to drive it on a dirt road, you have to drive it nice and easy, or you will break the suspension.
The trail mode is a nice addition. However, you could get pretty stuck if you don't press that button, which is undesirable. Wish the "automatic" mode of the AWD system would be more capable.
Yeah, honestly I am not going to get my new car into the condition I need a good AWD system, but driving CX-5 on paths is definitely an enjoyable experience.
Rely on lane centering? Are we driving the car or riding in it? If you’re driving, the DRIVER steers the car lol Also, brake boost a turbo car. That car is much quicker if you know how to drive it. Or get a different guy to test acceleration. These 2 things are going to keep me from watching any of your other videos!
Is turning the TCS off on a 2019 CX-5 turbo the same as Trail mode on the 2020 CX-5 turbo or are there additional improvements made in the newer models?
yes it does the same function turns of traction control they just changed the icon and name of it from TCS to trail mode. No difference in functionality and the active awd system is so good at calculating terrain height yaw etc you basicly never have to even use it. its used moreso to thrust your way out of a tricky spot that your stuck in and want to just torque yourself out of the jam.
Great review. This car was just missing an effective AWD system. Bingo. Great review! Thanks Ryan. Does the CX9 get this AWD system? (Trail button). Not all suvs have a passthrough (skis plus two rear seat passengers). This one does.
Actually, this "effective" AWD system is also in the older models, you just turn it on using a different button. Sadly, he didn't seem to realize that when he tested the 2019 CX-5. Mazda has released an article detailing how to activate off-road mode in older CX-5s.
My old drive way was similar to this rock trail. I drove up them in my front wheel drive yaris hatchback. Granted I didn't try stopping half way up and trying to start again.
@@amrashraf9559 Mazda is by far the most reliable of the two brands. One of my family members works for a Mazda Subaru dealership. They have tons of quality issues with Subarus, not so with Mazdas. I’m just now trading in my 2012 Mazda 3 with the first year of the skyactiv engine. 227,000 miles and it has never broken down on me.
I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It has burned engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. I only have 15,000 miles on it. Worse yet is that the RU-vid posts from Mazda or it's dealerships take out negative reviews. Sleezy. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their products.
Based on how this system works. What would enabling it higher speeds do? I’ll say this. After ~ 90 mph. Lots of features get turned off. So maybe go to your local race track and find out.
Can you test the RAV4 LE/XLE AWD with the bog-standard AWD? Everyone just tests the Adventure model. I want to know how the standard AWD with the new algorithms does.
One Mazda will offer hydraulic suspension lowering the car for better on road feel and lifting it for better off road limits. Off road tires with higher profile would make a difference off road
"6.86 seconds to 60"? I counted at least 8.5 seconds after watching the acceleration run three times, from the time the pedal went down (from "Go!"). 'Something to do with that "big pause" at the start?
