Some days there's nothing like the wind in your hair, the feel of the open road and the sound of a spirited engine in your ears. Of course, the only way to truly sample this sense overload is with a good ol' drop top convertible. For years, #Mazda has made what is undeniably the most well known, fun to drive convertible, known to you and me as the #Miata. Since not everyone wants a soft top, Mazda has given us this, the #MiataRF or "Retractable Fastback", a hard top, semi-convertible option that offers all the same lightweight, heart pumping thrills as cars twice it's price tag. As small as it is and as nimble as it is, can it still be the best and only answer for an affordable convertible sports car? Watch the review to find out!

Nice review and I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Picked up a 2020 RF GT 6MT in Soul Red/Black a couple months ago. Couple items I’d like to correct though: 1: The ND2 MX-5 has its own engine. It is not shared with any other model. 2. For 2020, the Club and GT trims both use the same suspension when equipped with the manual transmission. Mazda springs with Bilstein dampers.

I definitely appreciate the feedback. I'll admit I'm no perfect journalist so there are some things I've said that are wrong and I always appreciate comments like this so I can further my knowledge about cars in general! Have fun with your new MX-5/ Miata...I miss this car SO BAD!

FYI, the screen on the dash was always touch-screen. Whilst driving, the touch-screen is disabled and you need to use the central console control knob. Next tine you stop, or are at a traffic light, the touch-screen function is again available.

The top version in Philippines is the Club which costs USD56,000. I'm currently waiting on my order from Japan of the next step down. Manual, black, RF with nappa leather and 9 speaker Bose. USD50,000. Ridiculous pricing really, but cheap compared to any European car in this country which have extremely high taxes on them.

Just got my 2020 rf club and it’s the best sports car I’ve ever owned (including Porsche, Lexus, bmw and many others.) couldn’t be happier.

How is it better than the Porsche? Honest question. I have a 2018 RF myself.
@grisa12345
@grisa12345 3 года назад
@@seandaliege I don't know if it's objectively better than my last Porsche (2018 Cayman 718 GTS), but it's more fun for me and better looking. I like the fact that I can really wind it out through the gears, when in my Cayman, it was 2nd gear most of the time. Also the high redline is just loads more fun. I love the size, the efficiency, the build quality, the infotainment is easier to use. I love the RF because it's also the best of both worlds in terms of hardtop and convertible. My Cayman was a beast at the track, but I'm excited about the world of aftermarket available to the ND Miatas - something Porsche really doesn't have. For the price... there's no questioning the different value proposition. In place of my Porsche, I now have a loaded Jeep Wrangler Rubicon plus the Miata, for the same $100k price tag.

Great car. Woulda been nice if they'd figured out a better solution for the backup camera, but that's getting pretty picky.

Love mine same model only Polymetal grey and red leather. Also, I'm getting 33MPG average with about 1/2 city, 1/2 hwy- and that's with me pegging the rev limiter every now and then- If I wanted to, I bet I could get 37 average. Also, the GT turn's it's headlights as you turn- freaky the first time you see it.

I loved your review and enthusiasm, but do you realize you never put the top down during almost the entire review except for lead-in shots at the very beginning? Some video showing the convertible’s Transformeresque top-down sequence is just a gotta-have, plus shots comparing it top up and down for looks that are stunning in both states. I especially wanted to watch your review because your review model is identical to the one I just picked up. Half the reason I love the look of this car are the B-pillars and the way they look slanting down to the rear deck. There’s something so incredibly sexy about them and the way they surround and almost hide the rear window that I just can’t put into words. It definitely calls to mind the the back end of the Triumph TR7 hard top, a car my brother had and I used to love. No one seems to mention is very distinctive section of the car’s lines in their reviews, nor do they seem to mention the hood line from behind the wheel, with the fender flares and low swooping hood. Loving the car every day and for me the Soul Red with a tan interior is the ONLY color to buy this car in, although the new polymetal gray with burgundy interior is a nice second option.

It is not a "Fast Back". Look up the qualities that make a fast back and this does not fit that definition. Fast back has a rear that blends right to the edge without a flat spot. The RF has that flat spot tail which is actually the same as on the regular convertible. Mazda created that misinformation (every media test driver was told to mention it is a "fast back") so as to blunt the "Targa look" tag which it actually has. The RF looks like the Honda CRX/Del Sol and the Del Sol was never called a fast back.

How is the wind noise with the top down?
@GrandPrixGTP02
@GrandPrixGTP02 3 года назад
I'd say it's bearable however with the top open, you do get a lot more buffeting around your head because you have the hard top panel behind you as well as the windshield. Overall, I can live with it, but some may prefer the soft top over the RF.

But it's not a true convertible. It's a Targa Top. Which is why my 2021 MX5 is a soft-top - a true convertible, like my Mk3 hard top one was.
