CaptainMeme and Ezio commentate the Grand Final of the 2019/20 ODC, Online Diplomacy's most prestigious tournament! This event rotates between websites and occurs once every two years, crowning online Diplomacy's champion.
Diplomacy is a negotiation-based board game set during World War One. 7 players each control one great power (England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey) and fight for control of Europe, using their diplomatic skill to make covert deals with one another and to backstab their friends.

CaptainMeme: This could potentially be a very long commentary, you know better than we do. Me, seeing the nearly six hour time: Oh.Oh no.

That weird area you were talking about at about 4:45:00 would be the 'Bay of Biscay'.

Nice, another long video! Keep up the commentaries, they're really good! (I'm sure this one is too, but it was released like 2 minutes ago and it's 6 hours long so I can't judge yet!)

Thanks! We really need more tournaments to happen so we have enough things to commentate once we've run out of years in the eternal game :D

"This could potentially be a very long championship" *looks at video length* Not even 18 hours, what a joke.

Thanks! I think that's not in small part due to your channel popularising this game, so thank you :D

Glad to hear it! Re: the press, I always wish we can too because you're guaranteed to miss a lot just trying to read the board. Maybe someday someone will run a tournament where all press is revealed at the end. In the meantime, the Media Wars and Can This Alliance Really Work videos do go over some press, but those are the only ones on my channel that do!

@@DiploStrats I watched can this alliance really work. I really learned a lot just from how you spoke to people or people did not speak to you. I got Austria in my game and the Italy player is one lined answers haha. Thank you for putting in the time to these videos so people can learn from you.

The real issue is that you couldn't have crammed the longest game of all time into a mere 24 hours

I mean, we might have gotten a whistle-stop tour in there. But yeah, the series is likely to be a fair bit longer than that :D

Hide the list of player names, doesn’t add much - list those in the description….make the map bigger (important)
@DiploStrats
@DiploStrats 2 года назад
I really wish we could! Unfortunately the Backstabbr map doesn't go any wider than this, so we really need something to fill the space there. If we made the map any bigger it would cut off the top and the bottom.
@jaymoney5090
@jaymoney5090 3 года назад
1:46:55 Obvious answer is that you can convoy it out through both NWG and NAO, but given England's position.... it doesn't make any sense (there was no way for a fleet to end up in NWG in S05). I agree that holding in Lyp is just better!
@peterlegg2394
@peterlegg2394 2 года назад
The only guess I have is so that they could leave Liverpool open for an extra build if the convoy fails. But there's no way that was ever going to happen without France/Germany NMRing/vacating SCs.

Rules question: Can a unit support a move into it's own territory?
@Shannon_Lynch
@Shannon_Lynch 3 года назад
You cannot use a support to dislodge one of your own armies or fleets
@DiploStrats
@DiploStrats 3 года назад
Matthew's right, but also - a unit needs to be able to directly move somewhere in order to support a move there. A unit can't move to its own territory (that would just be a hold) so that order wouldn't be valid anyway.

So kind of off topic question. I just started webdiplomacy and I can’t read the map well with their “boats and ships” . Is there a way I can change it to look like this with circles and triangles color coordinated?
@DiploStrats
@DiploStrats 3 года назад
Unfortunately not on webDiplomacy. Their map is kind of unreadable - they're supposedly working on updating it, but that's been in limbo for a while. To get this map we recreated the game over on Backstabbr, which has a much more readable map!

Please pronounce Kiel as keel, that's about as close as one can get with english pronunciation. Ki-el sounds just jarring. Source: am german.

How does the diplomacy phase work online? Also what's the year end rule of 1925? I thought it was 18 supply centers?
@DiploStrats
@DiploStrats 2 года назад
The Diplomacy Phase is usually 24-48h long - press is text-based, so players check in and send/read messages when they have time to do so. The year end rule is a condition put in to stop games going on forever - 18 supply centers is the victory condition in Diplomacy, but there are certain positions on the board called stalemate lines which can be permanently locked down by a defending power. There are quite a few which lock down enough SCs that victory won't be possible anymore. So games can also end by mutual agreement (draw) or by end year (timeout). In qualifying rounds of tournaments, people usually score points depending on how many SCs they have when the game ends. In finals games (like this one) it's often just 'the person with the most SCs when the game ends wins the tournament'.

Why not just play Risk, Stratego, or Command and Conquer instead?
@Hobbit823
@Hobbit823 3 года назад
Risk, Stratego and C&C don't let you win by lying to your fellow players. Diplomacy is more akin to Mafia / Werewolf than Risk.
@DiploStrats

@@Hobbit823 Agreed! The way I'd describe it is probably that Diplomacy is what you get if you turn DnD into a competitive game. It's nothing like traditional wargames.
