Today Jon explores a little French SUV. The Peugeot 3008 is a well-rounded SUV that delivers decent equipment and enough performance to haul a family of five. Will our resident history buff finally fall in love with the French?

For those who have had bad experience with Peugeot cars previously, it's pretty true for the previous generations. The new generations using the Puretech engines have vast improvement in their build quality compared to the previous generations. BTW, this review missed out the boot floor board can be lowered to give more boot space and the tonneau cover can be kept below the boot floor board.

There are mainly 2 groups of Singaporeans. The first group are risk aversed who will stick to the tried and tested Japanese. The second group will just go for the badge. If you Google or search on RU-vid the least reliable cars, you will find that they are dominated by all the big German car brands. You can ask any BMW owners and most will tell you the long list of issues they faced with their cars. But to them the badge conquers everything. French cars on the other hand are highly underrated. Their reliability has improved over the past ten years. And I am a proud owner of 4 French cars to date. I just retired my almost 10yrs old 207cc and got a 5008. And I belonged to the minority group who wants to drive something special and unique. Talk to any Peugeot owners, and they will tell you the special connections they have with their car. On one hand, I feel injustice for the French car brands while the popular German brands can get away so easily with their lousy reliability records. But on the other hand, I just hope the Singaporean mentality on cars stays as I want my favourite brand to stay uniquely for the group who can look beyond the badge.

I discovered your reviews, in particular the excellent reviews by Jon while researching French SUVs here. I have to say, I've seen a lot of car reviews and by far the ones by Jon are the best local auto reviews. Why? Because he injects knowledge and intelligence in a simple, fuss free way. No long beatings-around-the-bush, no vanity monologues nor superficial comments. Rather he focuses on things that matter to us, or to quote him, the proverbial elephant in the center of the room. In this video, the way he discusses the French "reliability" perception while pointing out Japanese parts used in the 3008 really nailed it for me as a potential French car buyer. Yes, resale value may be affected by the perceptions here of buyers, but from any reliability research online, you can tell Peugeots have come a long way. It's main hurdle here now is ingrained mindsets rather than it's product offering. Thank you Jon and keep the reviews coming. - D.

16:30 as an ex-Peugeot 3008 driver (previous gen), I have to admit that my family sold off the car within 2.5 years (2016-2018) as a result of the frequency of various components failing over time. From malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor to faulty BlueHDI pump to broken aircon compressor and more, it left us pretty disappointed with the car despite being a nice vehicle to drive in. 😅😅 And yes, as mentioned by the rest, very appalling resale value.

Excellent point mentioned, sharing car parts is so common now that it's hard to draw a line between specific brands. The stigma that comes from perhaps our parents carries over and affects our opinion as well. Personally owns and enjoys the 5008 but many would frown upon the mention of its brand, the resale value and reliability. I would say "try it to believe it"

You're wrong Jonathan. I drove a Citroen for 5 yrs. Bought brand new. The nightmare/madness/hellish began after 2 yrs of ownership. -turbo cooling system broke 3x. -radiator overheated 3x. -engine gasket leaked 2x. -engine misfiring every year. -air con compressor broke 2x. -water pump changed 3x. -interior plastics literally melted. -wiper motor broke. -leather seats tearing apart after just 1 yr -passenger seat belt loosen for no reason. -climate control unusable after a year. -sensors and wiring goes crazy as they wish. -the lists goes on.it will take me a day to fill it up. This is from an actual perspective from a real owner. You might be wondering why I did not get rid of it earlier. Market price for french cars are worst than a stale pizza. The only thing that worked perfectly was the Aisin 6 speed gearbox which Toyota partly owns.(the only reason that it lasts) Everything else crumbles and wither like a dry leaf. No matter how much tender and love you shower it. I rest my case.

It was mentioned before that these conti cars were built meant for a chiller n dry climate. Spare parts are hard to get. I have a few friends giving up on Renault n Peugeot because of its close proximity of going for workshop repairs (OEM ones). Each time for a time of 4 to 6 weeks. After driving for 2 years, they hold their hands up. One Changed to a subaru forrestor and then it's happy days. Well, I have seen too many bad experiences by friends I know of. hence I am too afraid to try. So far, not seen a successful friend who drives a great French car for more than 5 years and have no complaints.

Singapore is usually about a year behind Europe. We have too small a market here to get priority. When the new 3008 was first launched in Singapore in 2017, Auto France could not secure enough stocks. The first 2 batches were sold out even before they reached our shores. That's part of the reason why I ended up getting the 308sw, cos I cannot afford to wait 3 months for the next batch of 3008 and there was no confirmation if stocks can be secured for the 3rd batch....

I like your review, such as logical and practical opinions. But multiple French car owners have told me never to get those. As with their luxury stuff, they're usually overpriced. I might be paying for their design though as I agree the interior you're sitting at, imagining the view you get looking at the dash, I know it will definitely be a looker (by the way the buttons look good too). Well, driving a British car, I can't say it is reliable too (1 year replace 1 part on average), but hearing the nightmares of FR car, I think UK cars generally fare a little better (Just don't compare it to the Range Rover, which is disastrous too)

French cars exist for one reason: for you to do charitable work. After suffering for a few years like my neighbour has with his 2018 3008 (the current model, not the old one like the fanboys will insist), you can sell them off at low, low prices and switch over to Japanese simplicity or true German luxury, hopefully much the wiser. PSA have changed the belt 4 times in an attempt to resolve the problem but there’s not much a belt can do against hot, acidic engine oil, right?
