Porsche Cayman GT4 full review: aex.ae/2LW6OPK
According to Porsche the new £75,348, 414bhp Cayman GT4 is “a brutal driving machine that is perfectly irrational.” It’s also a car that is “razor sharp in its responses that’s been designed for people who take their fun seriously and who would rather sit in a sport seat than a leather armchair.”
That’s the reason it has a six-speed manual gearbox, like it or not (although a PDK version will be offered next year), plus an enormous rear wing at the back that helps generate 122kg of downforce - a full 50 per cent more than the previous GT4, despite a near-identical drag figure.

A manual air-cooled 911 (or 356) is a masterpiece of Porsche... The very first GT3 and GT2 without any assistances were significantly the latest true Porsche. I have a big consideration too for the manual 928 series and 968.

Wtf why??!! ... Its NA!! this engine sounds good!! Doesn't need the previous GT4 engine at all. The exhaust just sounds more quiet because of those stupid petrol particulate filters nowadays. Just add a good exhaust and it will sound epic!!

I almost bought an excellent example of the 2016 model several months ago, when I decided on a 2017 CPO 991.2 base Carrera instead. It is more comfortable (the carbon fiber racing seats might be great for the track but my ladies would not understand) and I felt, more practical for every day driving and weekend getaways. Now that the 911 is securely in my garage, my sights are definitely on this 2020 GT4 as a more special car. I'm very glad backup camera and parking sensors have been added and that some requisite features that were options in 2016, are now standard equipment. After all, most of us will never track these cars and the last thing I want is to hit a shopping cart or safety post while parking. Thank you for the excellent video.

Regarding the weight of GT4 /Spyder I have heard that car is actually not heavier, it is just the case of new regulations for homologation process - the car has to be equipped differently than in previous years.

The media is taking the factor in that weighing regulations have changed. The stated increase in weight is correct. It is slightly heavier. (but not as much as originally reported). The 30kg is correct.

Great review. I love all of Steve’s reviews. Now I did hear any complains from the gears being too long of a “muted” sound like some other reviewers claim. So aside from the few extra pounds this car seems to be better than its predecessor.

A lot of people on here haven't driven a quarter of the cars that get reviewed yet they have an opinion on them. I imagine things would be different if they had... because there are a lot more exciting cars out there than Porsche. And for the record I HAVE driven: -C7 Corvette -Virtually every hot hatch on the market since 2012 -Mx5 Miata -Gen V Viper -Numerous 911s -Lotus Evora -90s NSX -98 Supra turbo -370Z So I'm somewhat informed.

Great content Steve and Auto Express. One question - would you buy one or stick with the Gen 1 GT4, or go to a GT3? I currently drive a 991 GT3 but had an allocation confirmed for October this year for a 718 GT4. Can't decide which way to go! What do other viewers think?

Would think it's unwise to move from the GT3 unless you have driven the GT4 and know you are 100% satisfied with the handling and the gearbox. Steve hasn't commented on the (still) long gear ratios, but if your GT3 has closer ratios this may make the GT4 feel sluggish. Perhaps the more modern cabin may make up for it though. Personally I've never bought a car from an allocation unseen, would not do it unless there are things that annoy you about the GT3 that you know (from reviews or otherwise) are better in the car you are getting.

@@TheChannel1978 Problem is if you want a Porsche GT car in Australia you need to pre order. Put my deposit down 18 months ago! I can't afford to keep both long term so am thinking I'll make a call on which car I keep after a few drives!

@@davew5167 As long as you get a test drive in the new car it should be fine. Sounds like you are doing your research too, so you'll know what to look for in the test drive. Paying a deposit 18mths in advance sounds so long but not a huge issue if you can get out of it though. Is there a Porsche Club in Oz? They might have a FB group you can use to talk to actual owners. They might have some advice from people who have gone from 911's to Cayman GTs and can tell you if they regret it or not

Bit disappointed- it seems it hasn’t really moved on considering it’s a whole new generation of gt4. Sounds a little muffled compared to the old car ? Could be that fuel particulate filter they’ve got in the exhausts due to regulations

I find disturbing that all the press reporters while praising for the manual, when approaching a curve, move their fingers looking for the pdk levers!! So I think that they praise just for "purist" reasons but when they need to do the effort to make the changes, like everyone else would do, they look for the fastest and easiest way to do it!!

I think 911s will never be redundant because of the heritage of the 911 and the rear axle engine layout and the characteristics that come with it. Porsche still seem to neuter the Cayman, but at least there is a GT model which there was not for the longest time!
