2020 TORO 22 Inch Lawn Mower Review - Doesn't Cut The Mustard 

We own a Toro shop, set the idle a little higher, sounds like it’s running at way too low rmp. Also, Toro incorrectly designed the carburetor vent hose. Any toro dealer will install the update kit for you completely under warranty. It won’t bog down after that. 👍🏼

All you have to do is adjust the governor plate it’s between the air filter and the gas tank just push it forward a little and it’s very powerful. It’s basically a gas peddle

I have one of those mowers and I replaced the engine with a Honda engine that I took off my Old one. Now it’s the best mower I have ever had

I love mine. I mulch small sticks,leaves grass. No problems. After Three years of mulching sticks, my blade is still sharp! I do clean my mower after every use!

I bought a yardmachines mower from Menards in 2022. It was only $199 but it runs good. We cut 5 foot grass at my sister's house with no issue.

I don't understand why you would hold it in drive when pivoting it as when doing so one wheel turns clockwise and the other anticlockwise. Holding it in drive doing tight turns is an easy way to tear up your lawn and put unnecessary stress on the components.

Wow, I love mine. No issues, cut on the highest setting. I have St. Augustine grass. Switch between bagging and mulching every other cut.

For a push I don't think you can beat the HRX217 by Honda. Pricey but you get a superior product.

The problem with the mower bogging down isn't lack of engine torque or power; it's because you are trying to mulch an average American lawn between the months of May and September. Discharge or bag and it'll bull through.. Mower companies really push this mulching idea, but you have to mow three times a week or be super patient or live in an arid climate or be in a draught for this to be practical. Personally, I don't like front drives that pull me and the mower around at turns. I like to stop, lift, and turnaround around manually and Personal Pace is far and away the best system out there. I just purchased the 22 sans the stowing option today, but with a 163 cc Briggs with 7.25 peak ft/lb torque. It does fine, but when I got in some high, thick, damp grass in the ditch line that had not yet been mowed this season, and the bagger chute clogged transforming my bagging into mulching, guess what? It bogged down and died. Mulching doesn't work for most American grass cutters, but it has a good sound to it. I had a Timemaster 30 with 10 ft/lb torque. It would bog down easily if I tried to mulch or if the side chute opening clogged forcing the deck to mulch. Power is not the problem. I ordered a free side discharge during the online registration process for the one I got today. Shock to those buying in 2022 and beyond. All mower prices are up 40%.

Does anyone have a reference # from Toro referring to the carb vent hose replacement to correct the bog down issue in Clay Miller's comment? Clay? Anybody else? Thanks

Our same model cuts very tall grass very well, never bogs down or acts like yours....not sure what's going on, are you in colorado or at high elevation. These mowers cost 479.99 right now....you got it for a steal if you only paid 350 bucks, DAMN dude.

My lawn has borders in all edges, i mow the perimeter 2 passes then its one way, do a 180, repeat 150 times, that self propel thing would be a major hassle, i use an old john deere js63c, simple handle engage, cant imagine what that would be like

I have a awd one of those I bought with blowen engine. Put a quantum engine on it. Wonder if better? Fairly new little use the throttle plate came out of the carburetor ran full speed blew the rod. 163 cc.. not vortex

Try using 93 octane gas with fi cleaner or a little wd40 in gas tank.

The 'no oil change required, just top off' doesn't really inspire much confidence in me. Does it at least have a drain hole?

The tire design is to insure maximum traction with minimal wear and tear on the grass

I would stay away from the 150 cc. Even with my older 7.25 ft lb. 190 cc (20333 2015) I mostly use the discharge method.

For reasons beyond my comprehension, the rear wheel drive is the best mower I've ever had. Still have a front wheel drive Craftsman. #1 you'll wear out the tires in year one. #2 The whole drive unit sucks. #3 It's heavier and cumbersome to store in off season on the Craftsman mower. The personal pace mower is just so nice. Pick your pace and just walk behind - no pushing. And, BTW - the haters don't like that it doesn't have throttle control. Must you be shown which end of a screwdriver to use?

Horrible mower for Texas laws especially if you have dry dirt and sand mix lawns. The previous 2018 model which I had to replace not barely 2 yrs in use when I bought it mulched better without making a mess all over the mower, now this newer model with the vortex absolutely makes a mess not to mention the rear chute is cheaper made than the previous model which does not seal the debris from flying out when mulching. Another mistake Toro made was not putting a side discharge on the new model stating they believed people don't use or care about that feature and if you want that feature you'll have to pay $700.00 for their super recycler. Now I'll be honest that I never used my side discharge much but I liked having it incase I did have to mow tall grass. Fortunately you can get a free rear discharge chute if you request it when you register your mower on Toros website. I've never really been a big fan of rear chute discharge but looks like I don't have a say or choice in how Toro operates. This will likely be my last Toro purchase because the no oil change is utterly a lie and bullshit. Ask any small engine repair shop and they will tell you immediately just how bad it is. My previous mower is an example because it wrecked most of the seals and gaskets from running the same oil. Oil over time on a small engine breaks down turning black and becomes really really thick. This makes the engine have to work 10 times harder especially if you live in a hot climate. They simply cannot give you long life expectancy therefore lie to you. Now if you don't mow a lot or have a really small yard you might get 5 yrs tops, but if you live in Texas or have at least an acre or two yard the life expectancy will run around 2 maybe 3 years if you are lucky. If you have a model that has been discontinued good luck claiming off your warranty because they will brush you off, I know this because that is what they did with my previous model. Don't buy battery powered mowers unless you are stupid, you are not stupid right? I know there are diehard Toro fan boys who will argue with me but guess what? I don't care. If you like junk or getting screwed by Toro then by all means waste your money. The only thing worth noting on the Toros anymore is the pace system and that is about it which is basically why I went ahead and bought this new model. I'm not trying to be ugly about this mower, just realistic since we consumers are the ones who pay the price.

I don’t see how you people are having issues. I literally just cut 2 yards at a minimum of 3 foot tall weeds. The mower does fine you just have to know how to adjust the mower for your area. The rpm is an issue and you need to set the carb for your elevation. Mine only bogs when I’m mulching something crazy.

I'd recommend turning up the idle and either run the bag or order a rear side discharge since this doesn't have the regular side discharge option

typical briggs and stratton the quality control just isnt what it used to . i can hear yer mower and to me it sounds like its now idling high enough . the stated power isnt the issue . it probably just needs the idle govener tightened . i was just using one from 2006 with a after market amazon chinese carb and it sounded similar . and mines the old techumseh . 6.5 hp. also dont see the problem with personal pace and tight turns. on the older models i grab the bottom outside part of the metal handle and push the plastic part in . but i mostly do that to stay at full speed

Allergic to grass is a great idea to wear a mask ,as is to help keep a lot of the dust and fine debri out of your lungs,👍great minds think alike ,using a blower is a dust maker it's a good idea to wear one doing this as well ,thanks for true information in this review . I don't like this new model because there's no side discharge and that's possibly the reason grass backs ,and slows mower .tires are not sold in store like other toro models with white tires . Great review. If a side discharge was open this motor may not choke up I think grass is building like you said that slows the mower. Also some mowers have smaller grass exits,this can also slow the engine ,it may be the case here.

This mower is the worst. With no side discharge, you have to use the bag all the time or the grass builds up in the bottom of the deck, leading to frequent stalls. Absolute worst!

This happens to me all the time with this mower. Unbelievable ! You have to take it to the shop out of the box. Ridiculous !

Change your oil. If you spend $500 for a mower. Not changing oil will cut the life of mower.

"Shooting Cars" is not using the personal pace correctly on turns. It makes a difference how much the handle is pushed down vs pushed forward during turns, especially sharp turns. I have been using Personal Pace for a long time, and never experience any loss of drive to help the mower around turns. Yes, if the use stops pushing the handle forward, the drive stops. But pushing down to raise the front wheels very slightly, while still pressing a tiny bit forward, the use can easily pivot the mower while its drive wheels help by just the right amount. Too bad this review slams the mower for user error. Also, if I were doing reviews of lawn mowers and expecting others to take me seriously, I would not be doing it wearing Crocs. But then, the American disease seems to be a total inability of most people to contemplate appropriate footwear for different situations and then wear the best choice.

Not at all happy with mine ..summer 2023. Shaggy cutting appearances...due to the fat tires crushing the grass down before being cut; ...lawn has stripes...ok....but a closer look reveals it mainly due to that grass being left slightly longer. This is my 4th toro in about 15 years....also my last.

Don't believe the "no oil changes for the lifetime of the machine" Oil breaks down and loses viscosity no matter what oil. If you're smart and care about your mower you will change the oil every so often

I'd suck that oil out and add good 30w or risk seizing b4 warranted deadline.

This lawn mower stalls out because there is no exit shoot for the cut grass, so the grass clogs up underneath and slows the blade. The FWD is almost no help, because the 2 front wheels spin and get no traction on uneven surfaces. The mower rattles like it's starting to fall apart. The lawn mower must have no product development because it has serious issues that make cutting the lawn way more difficult than it needs to be. Deck is unlevel. Will not cut grass too short or too long. Pushes difficult because drive wheels just spin, because of shape of lawn mower, there is no weight or little contact with the ground from drive wheels. Get a rear wheel drive, and better mower. Gets 2 stars out of 5, why , I'm being generous. Briggs and Stratton motor and blade, is strong, but stalls because of bad mower design without a grass shoot on side.

My mother-in-law bought the same mower and it was garbage. Motor blew after 8 uses and when it was running it would spit grass everywhere and she uses a bag. P.S. the rear wheel falls off that mower on a lot of them, just read the reviews on Toro.

No oil works when you blow it up you have to buy a new one It not dirty oil that gets a engine it oil being thin from gas get by the rings and valves .

I will admit also that engine is absolutely 💯 gutless in tall grass, I have the same mower myself, it's "ok" if you order the optional side "rear" discharge chute. I wish I spent the extra money for one with the "true" side discharge and bigger engine....meaning said I had a 19" cub cadet with the 159cc engine and would mow circles around the toro......sadly I'm disappointed with my toro purchase 😢

Utter crap. Thats my review. It doesnt mulch as it hasnt a proper mulch blade. And try and buy an aftermarket blade! It doesnt collect as the opening is as big as an eye of a needle. It doesnt side discharge as it just collect around the opening and then clogs up. So its shite at mowing grass. But apart from that, its still rubbish.

DON'T CRY, TRY A # 21442 FWD with the same B&S but full speed/ stop drive! Turns? With a bag : wheelie time! Good news: get rid of that "stuff" they are selling @ $7,00 at the pump ( unless you can find ' pure-gas" pump?) Get some :. 100 LL av fuel, add the sta- bill 360° ~~ or your fuel stabilizer & a little MMO to the CYLINDERS once in a while when you check the plug, if you got a tach you'll read the difference ( no 120 or 142 octane!) & You can slow down over thicker grass: I can't ; justike a "ight switch" on & off but with better fuel & 3 finger turns , you'll be amazed! I was , but wish I had the $$$ to get the auto drive? Now it drill start "SEARS" no parts " set for the fences & garages ++ a little weed Wacker/ trimmer and the Toro for the strip lines ( extra accessory gift?) Fill a FEW vLlys & it looks good - without glasses but feels good even with lousy balance, ( protect it knees & spine vertebrae as long as possible! No :" simple operations" make sure you know the worst & prey for the best? ) Thanks 4 the review -- may be they'll take a trade in after a tax return , fuel deductions will overwhelm the IRS we're still waiting so is Medicare!
