As far as SUVs go, it doesn’t get much better than the 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. The model year is what matters most here because this newest version makes the old-school off-roader easier to live with than ever before thanks to a few new convenience features that only enhance the 4Runner experience. But with this SUV showing some serious off-road capability, should you reconsider buying that Jeep Wrangler Rubicon? A Jeep Wrangler is simply better for hardcore off-roading period. Solid front axle, easier to mod, front and rear locking differential, more ground clearance 🤙

Yeah definitly can’t wait for the redesign. They did say they will stay true to the history of the 4Runner and will def be a body on frame with not too drastic of a change which is good news for 4runner guys and off roaders. I have a feeling the new redesign is gonna be an absolute beast off road while still be comfortable on road. that’s basically how it is now but it will be an even better off roader imo with the entire segment being more competitive now along with the Ford bronco Jeep Wrangler and other manufacturers releasing a lot off road inspired trucks and suvs

The title is a bit misleading. Rubicons are for off-roading. On-road, yeah a trd pro is better. Take a stock trd pro off road with a stock Rubicon and you will see a difference. When the video host says "solid axles don't matter," he's wrong. They do, especially in certain rock crawling situation when you need that flex.

No it doesn't because no one takes a 70k vehicle to trails that requires that level of offroading. I've been offroading for 40 years and I've encountered only a few new trucks on advanced trails. When it gets really tough no one wants to damage their new trucks. Moderate trails can be traveled by both vehicles with capable drivers.

@@terry947 I have Rubicon, and my buddy has a Gen 5 4runner. They're both amazing off road. The Rubicon has the edge, but we hardly ever go out on crazy difficult trails to take advantage of that edge. Why do we avoid the most difficult trails? Because we don't want to (seriously) damage our new(ish) trucks! They're our daily drivers, it would just be irresponsible to break something. Michaeltom402 is correct. (Edit: although our trucks were much less expensive than $70k, we still gotta baby them for now)

When you say gen 5 4runner is it a TRD Pro? People don’t compare stock Wrangler sport to a fully loaded rubicon now, yeah they are both Jeeps and can go off-road but clearly rubicon stock is better than a wrangler sport stock.

@@michaeltom402 My thoughts exactly! Only someone with much money to burn takes a newer $40-50K vehicle into gnarly off road situations. If you want a capable off-roader, by an older one and mod the suspension, which defeats the purpose of which stock vehicle is better (except for the Jeeps live front axle)

I would love to have the 4runner. I had a 1985 model that lasted more than 25 years. However I own a motorhome and I need to pull a vehicle and you cannot flat tow a Toyota. If they would make them towable like my Jeep Wrangler, I would trade it in in second and get a 4Runner. Here is hoping!

I agree the 4runner is a more solid option than the wrangler, but the locking diff in the front does in fact matter. But I guess that’s only if you’re really wheeling it. But anyone who knows even a little about 4x4 knows that’s a front locked gives a huge advantage.

Wish I had watched this 3 weeks earlier. Got a 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. 600 miles later its already in the shop !!!! Take it from me , BUY A 4RUNNER, wish I would have !!!!!

Jeeps are for image. One percent of Jeep owners do serious off roading. They are horribly suited for Highway use, and having a four door or truck version kills a lot of the off road ability. Buy a four runner or Tacoma, you get 95% of the off road ability, a way better daily driver, and they last forever.

I own a 2004 Wrangler Rubicon and just purchased the exact vehicle in this vid. I love them both for different reasons. Both will be passed on to my Nephew when I croak. How lucky is he?

The Wrangler will be marginally better off road but the 4 Runner will shine in every other use. Plus you get Toyota reliability and resale value. I love hearing Canucks say oot for out and aboot for about.

I currently have a wrangler unlimited 6 speed and I have been itching to go test drive this exact vehicle! I feel like it may be a smoother ride than my jacked up wrangler with fox suspension as well. How do u like the way it rides ? I really like the look of it

Well, 1. 4runner looks better 2. Rides better 3. Less cabin noise 4. More space 5. Holds value very similarly or better 6. Just as offroad capable as the jeep.

At this price point GC 5.7L Trailhawk has better output and Luxury. Toyota builds vehicles to be best in class reliability only. The Wrangler comparison doesn't make sense, this machine would not follow a line with a Rubicon on a Rocky trail.

Thanks for watching, Seth. Don't sleep on the TRD Pro; it will gladly go most places a Rubi will! To your point about the Grand Cherokee, in theory, yes, that makes sense. But the big difference is that, just like the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, the 4Runner TRD Pro is a lifestyle vehicle more than a luxury one. In that way, the target market is much different from the Grand Cherokee, Trailhawk or otherwise. Cheers!

TRD Pro would absolutely follow a line with a Rubicon. There are so few instances where the full capabilities of a Rubicon would enable it to shine over that of the Pro in off-roading. So few that all that extra jazz is practically meaningless in a comparison of the two vehicles. Is a stock Jeep Rubicon better off road? Maybe a little but that’s about all it does well. Other than that it’s basically a rolling gimmicky pos.

Had a lifted XJ with 33" buck shots and crawled with guys with similar setups, except they haded modded front and back lockers. In Rock gardens I could follow the same line, but I needed more momentum to clear. My rig took a ton of abuse by comparison. Don't get me wrong I like what Toyota is doing, but I think it's had to compare from an off-road perspective especially with all the Bolton mods available for the Wranglers.

@@swankybubbles77 lol my stock 5.7 jeep gc 5.7 hemi in some muds and uphills beats 4runner trd pro. Mud,sand,snow they both perform well. In rocks yeah because of rear axle and kdss 4runner will be taking rocks with less drama than gc th ,but on road, especially with slippery road, full time 4x4 of jeep is better than only rear wheel drive of 4runner, or you can lock 4x4 high, but it’s locked central differential, you will have some problems in street turning lol

60K?!! No for either one. And that tow rating is B.S.! It'll move 5k lbs, but it will also be the worst tow experience in every way you ever tried. A full size truck gets the same mileage and does it way better with more power and less expense.

"Off-road weapon" - Yes. "Comfortable highway cruiser" - Absolutely NOT. Those seats by design are uncomfortable for anything more than an hour. Also, Softex = Vinyl = Plastic. $50K for plastic seats? Fuck you Toyota. I love the 4Runner but this needs improvement.

Jeep has all of that and more and actually looks cool. Aside from no locking diff in front, it also doesn't have the electronic sway bar disconnect, which is a really helpful offroad feature. And no lane change warning? Fake leather? Not much genuine off-roading in this review.

It does crawl. The gearing ratios aren't compared, but I'd bet that it's another relevant off-road feature where the Rubicon is superior.

Get a 4runner, the Tacoma is gutless. O have both, I sold the Tacoma kept the 4runner. The ride is better on the 4runner. The Tacoma has terrible transmission and it can't seem to figure out and shifts to much on transmission.

I know how capable this shit is after seeing Everyman Driver get stucked in that pond a few years back. But the question is, Will it surpass the Bronco or do u believe that's the same model as the Wrangler. Best Offroaders in the Market will Be the 4runner, Rubi, ZR2, AT4 Upcoming Bronco and Rebel.

It doesn't cost more. This TRD PRO costs 50k, the same price as the 4 door Rubicon Hardtop with upgraded options. The Rubicon is actually several thousand cheaper if you don't add the options.
