I really don't understand why people "Need to feel" the shift, the CVT is just fine. The whole idea of people "needing" to feel shift 1, 2, 3, 4 etc is just weird. I don't think this is a issue, especially for people who has previously not owned anything else but a CTV-gearbox.
From my understanding from engineers who have done research on this, much of the shifting feel and sound has to be more rhythmic when combined with internal combustion cars. There are certain CVTs that create this discordant sound with the engine because of the constant rubber banding that subconsciously creates anxiety or driver fatigue and unpleasantness.
@@savagegeese That's interesting but this does not exist on my two recent cars (both Toyota Hybrids with e-CVT) and it has never bothered me and it doesn't seem to bother Toyota either. Especially since they only recently added it (one extra gear, the first one ) on the new Hybrid system ( 2.0 Corolla engine)
I need to feel the shift becasue in my case i want to feel, hear, and see that everything is in working order, it's a big reason i don't like EV'S, you don't know what the hell's going on and i don't trust these computer systems, becasue I've been in plenty of modern cars where I've checked on basic functions and the computer is way off. I drive drive a 96 accord and i know exactly what a working part should sound like, and sounds that ring alarm bells that something may be wrong. I know exactly when it's supposed to shift, I know exactly what the engine should sound like in first gear, i hear exactly when the fuel pump is in working order, i can see exactly how much oil i have you get the drill. That's one reason i hate CVT's and t most modern cars, you put too much trust into unproven systems especially in luxury cars and I've seen enough cases where that bites people in the rear when their engine blows because the retards removed the dipstick in place of a computer or when companies are replacing surefire ways to check that you car is in working order for flawed computer systems that could screw you if your not as car keen as the minority of the population. So in the case of "feeling the shift" it's not something we complain just to complain about it (at least me), i have my reasons, i want to feel that the car is in working order, especially not with a product that has a shotty track record like a CVT and most modern car features and gimmicks
@@savagegeese Also the fatigue and unpleasantness would only be reoccurring if you step on the gas on a cvt / or e-CVT. That's what creates the groaning noise. More common on a 1.8 Hybrid engine like the Prius but not so pertruding if you drive a Hybrid v6 Lexus with a CVT
The corolla was never "disposable". It's more like the Oster blender your parents gave to you when you moved out that their parents gave to them when they moved out and although it works just fine you almost wish it would break so you didn't have a fossil on your countertop. So you buy a new blender and it breaks in 6 months, and out comes the fossil again.
I really appreciate Toyota's dedication to affordable and reliable cars. Ever since Toyota redesigned the hatchback, it's been on my short list for my next car.
Affordable cars? Toyota have the highest prices when you shop around. With the CVT issues the Corolla has been recalled for, I'm not even sure the price is worth it any longer.
@@palebeachbum Agreed. The hatch has been out for just over a year and already it has been recalled atleast twice from what I remember. That's the reason I didn't buy the toyota hatch right as it came out cause they were using an all new engine and transmission and I didn't feel like being the guinea pig. Plus with that price I would most likely buy the hyundai elantra or the new kia forte, you can get the top trim of those for the mid or base trim of a corolla.
Finally! An expert cars reviewer who can appreciate driving a Corolla the same way he does with a Porsche! Of course with respect to the car class and price!!!
"I carry a corolla in the back of my Ram as a back up. With a Ram you always need a backup." -- (1) I doubt you have ever driven a RAM, let alone owned one. (2) I doubt you have ever driven anything outside of a video game.
@@mountainhobo LOL. I was being sarcastic about my truck. 2014 Ram Ecodiesel, 4x4, crew cab, 5'7" box with Hankook AT2 tires. I'm on my fourth recall hence my commentary on carrying a reliable backup car in the bed. It wouldn't fit anyway but makes for a funny albeit bit of an inside joke. The latest problem???? EGR coolers. Thanks eco-nuts. I've also drove 60,000 lb dump trucks a few times and worked for a feed mill in Wisconsin for three months (summer job) driving a 36,000 lb truck picking up and delivery feed stock at farms. It was called a shovel truck. Why? Because I often had to shovel the corn, soybeans, oats, barley, or wheat into the attached elevator. There are times I wish I'd stayed on the farm ...
@@mountainhobo Worse. I bought it used so I can't complain about being an early adopter. Anyway, it's a nice powerful engine and I personally haven't had any problems. However, 4 recalls in ... 2 for non-engine, one for Eco-complaints, and now the EGR.
Mark F I agree for the most part but wait until you sit in a new Camry it’s insane ow nice the interior is like I can’t imagine what the Avalon’s feels and looks like
I don't mind the screen but like he said i hate seeing this tablet in the middle ive owned 3 explorers i was going to get an ST and just because of the stuck on tablet im looking at other options.
Why do I need a fucking tablet in the first place? Give me a slot to click my phone into and have an aftermarket adapter set to physically connect any phone I like. 0 connecrivity issues, costs bugger nothing, reliable as the plastic used will ever be.
@@kendelion They ship the Corolla hatch, Prius and many sedans from Japan which are too small to be practical for many large North Americans so I can still hope ;)
We won't be getting economy wagons anymore. I'll use VW as an example because I have inside knowledge. The manufacturing cost difference between a Tiguan and a Golf Sportwagon is less than $1K, but average sale price is nearly $4000 more. On top of that, depreciation in a Tiguan is much less steep than the wagon, which means lease prices are actually lower for the Tiguan. So with the Tiguan VW makes more money, most customers are spending less money, and the average American sees it as getting more car compared to the Golf Sportwagon. That leaves the only would be customers for the wagon to be enthusiasts; and much to the chagrin of all of us, enthusiasts don't buy economy or mid-market cars new, we buy them used, providing no incentive for the manufacturers to serve us except at the high end where the margins justify the low volume.
This is my first car! And I LOVE IT!😍 I have no complaints, it’s easy to drive, the sound is good, is really cheap on gas! And it’s the perfect car for me!❤️
A review that appreciates the Corolla for what is - a simple, elegant, well-handling, comfortable car that sits 4 people without drama. Thank God for this channel!
I once rented a 2012 Corolla for a week, after a week with a nearly-new '12 Focus. It was a pleasure to switch to a simpler car in which everything, including the traditional 4-speed automatic, worked as it should - like it was designed and built by people who actually care.
I was like that...Till I got my 2019 Corolla, radar cruise, and auto brights on top of auto lights, heated steering wheel and seats are all things I don't want to give up on my next car. Maybe by then the lane assist crap will be better, but it's still kind of cool when it works. I agree the infotainment is a joke, may as well have copied Mazdas dash completely, cause the new ones seem inspired by them.
I have a 2010, too! Base model, no bells and whistles, and it’s reliable as hell. Could I afford something fancier? Sure, but I’d rather stick with a car that I can count on that’s also PAID OFF.
I used to say that, you will change your tune fast once you get hands on these new ones. Coming from someone who also owns a 2005 toyota matrix as we speak. You will clap your hands in appreciation.
I love my 2013 corolla S. I wish I had a manual transmission but at least it’s still an automatic transmission and the last year a Corolla had an automatic.
I really think the best way to fix the CVT is to take what Toyota did with adding a real first gear and start adding real gears back into the transmission. So the next gen Toyota Corolla will offer a real first AND second gear. Then just keep going from there.
i know "kids", who cant even afford a driving licence. its around 2000€ btw. my first car was a 12 year old run down piece of shit polo, it cost me 800€ wich is less than my licence was.
They did in New Zealand. We had the domestic ae82 fxgt, Japanese imports of those and the ae9x series, and the ae101 and ae111. They all looked great and were fast for the time, in many cases still faster than the new corollas. Oh, and loads of ae85/86s.
I drove one of these as a loaner when I had a recall of my 06 Matrix, and honestly I could not believe the ride quality of this vehicle. It really was eye opening in terms of how far cars have come in 15 years, literally like night and day. This was an incredibly comfortable ride and stylish interior also (and I think that the infotainment screen is cool, disagree with the reviewer on that, he seems to have a fixation on that). For what this is, it is an outstanding car.
I'm glad you seeing a different light. I have my 2005 matrix and even though I have almost 200k miles or 300k km for mileage without too much maintenance made me get 2020 corolla due to history of that reliability and low cost maintenance
Anybody else notice the Ford Edge running the red light at the very end? Lol! Awesome review! Looking for a replacement for my 2011 Focus. Will definitely take a look.
Hey! I was born and raised in Crystal Lake too! My first job in the car industry was at Anderson BMW/VW/Mazda as a service porter in 2003-2005. Great years for those brands!
Yeah when I realized Geese is right in my area I'm like wooooahh, I've lived here my whole life so i know all around. It'd be cool if there was ever a meetup.
I love that Toyota stays the course when it comes to their idea of complete reliability and making a pure driving/commuter car that'll last you for 15 years or more.
You could add a section. 'what size TV box fits into this car' I eat lunch outside the local big box store and almost every day I see people struggling to fit those large flat tv boxes into their sedans.
@@404nobrakes noooo, not the same. SUVs are actually taller riding hatchbacks. Wagons have a longer rear overhang in comparison. Plus the car ride height, obviously.
He must have the dash lights cranked all the way up for the video, rather than turned down far as possible for better night vision. Or, he jumped in to drive the car right after the cam girl 😂
Thanks for taking the review serious and providing actual information for potential buyers. Definitely refreshing after watching "Quirks and features" reviewers just meme their entire videos. Favorite Car RU-vidr for sure.
Great, calm and sensible review, thanks! In Europe you get the sedan with a hybrid engine, which is much slower but has an amazing fuel consumption value. The drawback is that it comes in only one trim level and only that said engine so it is a bit hard to get exactly what you like with it.
We get that too, the 1.8l hybrid is offered in the US. What Europe gets that we don't is the second hybrid with the 2.0 l engine and the wonderful ESTATE.
@@jamesmedina2062 You don't get them because no one on america buys them, you had wagons, no one bought them, so of course no one is going to offer them, losing money in the process.
It's getting rarer and rarer. Although several compact cars still offer that combination, which is pretty great. I got my N/A MT kicks with a new 2019 Miata. Barring any transmission issues, maybe the simple design will stand the test of time.
Once again I agree on all points. I have a 2019 XSE hatch with the 2L. It's a great little car, and I got it as a commuter car to get good gas mileage, it does a fantastic job. I picked the Corolla because of the port and direct injected non turbo engine because I want it to last. That, and it's more comfortable than the equivalent Honda anyway. Great review, love my Corolla.
I'm a simple guy, I see Savage geese video so I press the like button like a Savage. There aren't many RU-vidrs like this guy. The effort and honesty he puts in these videos are so refreshing. And he makes excellent videos for people who don't just buy cars for the infotainment center.
I bought a new corolla in '81 for $9000. Loved that car. Drove it for 9 years then bought my first and only Camry. Today I drive a platinum Highlander.
Thank you for doing this review, I have been doing research in preparation to buy a new car, and your reviews have been the number one thing that has decided which cars I am considering. Thank you for such high quality and in detail content, especially with the interior, since your taste just happens to be similar to mine.
Best introductions of any other reviewer, and the music in the beginnings can you list those in the description ? they are always awesome. Keep up the great work, love the channel, love the information that is shared, and the production quality, your usage of camera angles and lighting Great Job.
I have a 2012 corolla sport, it was feel numb until I change lighter rims and tyres, it drives like a really different car and handles way better on corners now and since im done with financing the car ill upgrade the suspension to have fun to drive on corners
Savage: consider doing some reviews outside of cars. Your knowledge is great. I understand these would be more of a blog, and obviously limited amount of editing would be needed. I would like the learn from you ;)
I honestly really appreciate what the corolla is admist all of the cars on the market today. Simple, NA, Manual trans option, and this time they made it even look really good!
Thanks for the great review again @savagegeese I just picked one up last week and it’s a perfect car for what it’s intended to do. The only downfall honestly is that horrible screen design sticking up off the dash. No attempt to integrate it into the interior design. Oh, and the center armrest does telescope forward.
Thanks for a great video! Car buying has been stressful during the shortages and the global pandemic. Your content helps me research and point out things I don’t normally think about.
I understand that people think CVTs are weird, but what benefit does a CVT with fake shift points have? It doesn't keep the engine right in the power or efficiency band all the time, and it can't handle torque like a normal automatic.
Just bought a SE in that same color two weeks ago. It really strikes a nice balance for someone like me who spends a lot of time on the road for work. You get reliability and a tiny bit of fun without breaking the bank.
I thought the point of the CVT was to maximize whatever parameter the driver is trying to achieve; i.e., performance or efficiency. Get the engine to the desired speed and let the CVT do the rest. So, why the fake-icity with all the fake shift points doing fake shifts?
Too many people complaining about how CVTs feel weird, so Toyota did this to satisfy traditional drivers. Even at the expense of power or efficiency. It's not just Toyota. A lot of car companies are doing this now to their CVTs.
How is the highway performance? I really wanted to like this car but I got some higher speed instability from this when I had the manual hatch. Surprisingly the Yaris feels solid as a brick
The Yaris is a Mazda 2... just an uglier one. You may have had a faulty suspension part in your Corolla. Some guy in this comment section was complaining about having to re-align multiple times. A faulty ball joint perhaps?
@@gerardjoaquino8856 Yes it is straight up a rebadged mazda 2 which is probably why it drives so well. My problem with new toyotas that I have experienced is this highway instability with both the Rav4 and the Corolla and this really sucks because I loved both of those cars otherwise. We have owned toyotas all our lives and the older cars had this problem but idk why these new ones do. I need to go to a dealership and try them again
Mazdas are almost always better drivers than Toyotas. You are comparing Corolla with Mazda2 rebadged by Toyota . The Corolla will probably be still driving in 20 years time, not so sure about the Mazda. Pick your preferences
Love your videos. One suggestion (and pardon me if you address this elsewhere), but I think folks would appreciate, in the final thoughts section, a quick pros/cons compared to the other vehicles in the segment. I mean I do hear you do just a bit of that, but a bit more, at least for me, would be much appreciated. Thanks again for excellent videos.
@@Christian--- you're still confined to whatever size the DIN is though. You cant get larger in screen size without getting in the way of other controls.
This is why I watch Savage Geese. He isn't in it for clicks. If he was he wouldn't be reviewing ho hum cars like the Carolla and Civic. He gives an honest opinion of years and years of reviewing cars both high end and low. Thank you Savage!
I am a huge fan of the Corolla's Been driving them for 18 years now. Super reliable and good value for the money. The newest Corolla is a welcome sight in many ways and I was happy to see many steps in the right direction but there is one thing that keeps me from buying this car and you addressed it in this video. The horrible horrible did I say horrible? Ipad for a radio in the dash. It is just hideous. Please bring back a double din radio that I can upgrade to something nicer if I want to down the road. Other than this the car is excellent.
Your integration of music (and the kind of music) improves noticibly with every couple of videos. (I'm not not watching every single video back to back.) Keep it Mr. Geese!
The interior looks really nice , if only that screen was 3/4th the size and worked into the dash it would have been a VERY nice interior. Sadly interior space seems just too lacking.
The comment about the big piece of plastic on the left side is so true. I had the hatch version of the Corolla and it almost took my knee out when I got into an accident.
I agree with you, I own one and it was the best new car buying decision I ever made. Coming from a used Toyota that I got for $3100 that I still have for 8 years and running with almost 300k km along with new 2020.corolla le.i have now
@@vlads2874 well it be nice to keep a car as long as you want. Unfortunately there are accidents and therefore settlements on value. Therefore resale value rears its ugly head. So yes you always have to consider resale value.
I have a 2018 Toyota Corolla SE. I LOVE Toyota. I mean, budget wise. Distance wise. Great quality vehicle. I wouldn't mind trading for the newer model but it still rides smoothly. Don't see why I'd spend the money I just paid off again for a newer version. But from my experience I love Toyota car models. Unlike my friend paying WAY more for his sporty vehicle I feel even better! Lol Thanks for your awesome review!
This is my first Toyota. I picked this over the Elantra Sport, because the last generation Elantra Sport was the one to by. Current Elantra Sport.... I don't care for it. I got the Corolla in the 6MT and it's definitely the fun one to drive. 6MT comes with cloth, BUT you get push button start and Moonroof! I love it!
Many reasons, including ever-increasing government standards and mandated items on new vehicles. It all costs money to develop and include, and they're gonna price the vehicles in a way to ensure they recoup all development costs on a new vehicle, of which there are many. Lane departure warning, automatic braking, backup cameras, increasing mechanical complexity to meet CAFE standards, licensed software like Carplay and AA--none of it's free.
I just bought a 2020 Toyota Camry SE in December and it was around 10% off msrp. It originally costed around 27,000 but the dealership had a discount of $2000 off with a rebate of $1000, and I only had to pay $24,450!
Why do you reviewers always seem to test the top of the line of a particular car, for the price of this thing, you can buy a bare bones Camry. Most people buy the cheaper version of these cars.
Thumbs up, Sir!.. $28000 for a Corolla seems a lot... I got my 2008 VW GTI at about the same amount in 2008. Plus, I got it for 0% financing. Win/win. Keep doing what you're doing, man... Peace!..
The first few minutes of this video shows evidence that Matt Maran is having an influence on Mister Goose since they have spent some time in each other’s reviews: faster talking like Matt. ☺️
I have a '17 Corolla w/ the 1.8 L CVT. No balls, totally gutless. Just the best car for driving to work-point A to point B. Happy with my purchase. I bought the pre-production loaner. Had 6K miles. $17K out the door. Still smelt new and had warranty left.
You tell me your pet peeve with this car and I'll tell you mine. Ready? The gauges with that blue arc look like something from the 80's. And one more thing not related to the Corolla: Weren't we supposed to have the conclusion of the Miata series with the ND video on January 3rd?
Yes someone finally points it out! 👍 i've hated Toyota gauges for a while. Noticed them first in an SW20 then i could never unsee their cheap or lazy gauge cluster design.
I just bought a new 2019 Camry SE over the Corolla for my high school senior son. Why? Because the Camry has been tested in all crash tests whereas the Corolla hasn't. Better ride, less road noise, more power, traditional gears as opposed to the unreliable/more maintenance CVT, doesn't have the ugly stuck on iPad as the center console.
Unfortunately, the 8-spd automatic in the Camry is having problems. It'll probably be recalled at some point. There may be TSBs out on the internet already. Not sure. When it comes to transmissions these days, many are proving to be problematic, whether geared or CVT. Transmissions have just gotten too complicated and fussy in their engineering and programming. I'd take a dependable Chrysler Torqueflite 3-spd auto from the 80's/90s over the vast majority of modern transmissions.
@@palebeachbum It's too bad North America doesn't appreciate the manual transmission (I heard manuals now only make up 4% of sales!), because there's your reliable transmission. So much less complicated! Manuals are still the main transmission in many parts of the world.
@@lukek1949 They make driving more complicated and involved. Most people aren't car enthusiasts. They just want something to get them places safely and comfortably with as little involvement as possible. Modern automatics also tend to be much more fuel efficient. With that said, I'd live to have a 2nd car with a manual trans.
